|Where is distance measurement tool ??||spoko-spoko||11/4/09 9:00 AM|
Distance measuring tool was always in my maps. Today I see a lot of changes there and the tool dissappered. Why? Was it moved to some other place or removed completly?
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||somerandomcharacters||11/4/09 4:27 PM|
same thing here but I found it. go to "my maps", then "browse the directory", it was the first one under "popular." google is probably tracking which people measure what now. I wish they would just implant the mind control chips in our brains already and be done with it.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||baseonballs||11/19/09 12:28 PM|
As somerandomcharacters mentioned, it hasn't disappeared. The reason it was appearing before when you clicked on My Maps is because it was a featured Mapplet (mini Maps application) since it's so popular. You can now find it, along with many other Mapplets in the directory. Once you add it, you should see it every time you click on My Maps.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||prees7432||12/1/09 9:07 AM|
So now we have to sign-in before using this tool?
An extra step I could have done without.

OK base on balls, where is the directory??
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||Tetontransplant||2/13/10 5:53 PM|
Same question. What/where is the directory?
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||phone_4093||4/4/10 12:16 AM|
These sort of changes really piss people off.
No notifications or anything.
You just get arrogant programmers with little to do.
For gawd's sake...
If its not broken don't fix it.
Total waste of time.

Distance Measurement tool is now available as Maps Labs feauture:
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||filmtravel||6/22/10 11:04 PM|
using firefox, and went to gadgets, enabled the Dist. Measurement Tool, still does not appear.
But going to: http://maps.google.com/gadgets/directory?synd=mpl&backlink=http%3A%2F%2Fmaps.google.com%2Fmaps%2Fmm%3Fie%3DUTF8%26hl%3Den%26ll%3D44.430481%2C26.12298%26spn%3D0.506998%2C1.234589%26z%3D10&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fmapfiles%2Fmapplets%2Fdistance%2Fdistance.xml
and clicking "add it to maps"
makes it appear when you click 'My Maps'

We can't avoid Google, for now. But I hate it. I always will.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||Timtak||8/22/10 9:25 PM|
Where is the directory? I go to my maps, create new map, click on anything and everything that can be clicked and still no distance measuring too.
Bing maps would be easier to use if it were not for the need to install Silverlight.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||Goblynn93||11/13/10 6:49 AM|
Go to My Maps.
In the top right, next to My Profile is an unlabled item that says "New" and has a little person...
That is the Directory everyone is talking about.
If you're going to give help please be CLEAR about your instructions or you actually leave people even more frustrated.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||moosehead||12/8/10 6:01 PM|
Thanks, Goblynn93 - finally someone with the right answer. The magic "New" provides the Directory.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||ebshepard||12/21/10 11:17 AM|
So I've found the directory and added the measurement tool to My Maps. But I can't find the tool in My Maps. How do I use it? Where does it show up? Thank you!
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||bassano||12/26/10 2:07 AM|
Beacuse google maps were been deprecated and mapplets containing even distance measurement tool were removed from my maps
as oyu can see here http://google-latlong.blogspot.com/2010/11/mapplets-to-transition-out-of-google.html
new directory for mapplets you can find here: http://maps.google.com/maps/mapplets?moduleurl=http://www.google.com/ig/modules/geoscratchpad.xml
but you must load xml code of mapplet or url address to load mapplet and it is not easy, I did not find distance measurement tool now, I only find elevation contours and path profiler
for now as measurement tool I found only this adress http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm
map seems similar like google maps, for now it seems even better map , only graphic is little different but you can handle with it I think :)
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||CES1951||12/27/10 11:46 AM|
After adding the tool to your profile using the instructions provided by Goblynn93, you will see a little icon to the left of the distance scale in the lower left-hand corner of the map frame. Click the ruler icon. It will invite you to click on a point to start the measurement. Click a second point and it will give you the distance.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||canoetraveler||1/6/11 12:09 PM|
Thank you CES1951!
That little icon stuck in the opposite corner from the rest of the controls is as non-obvious as it gets. You would think that Google has been possessed by the user interface ghouls of Microsoft.
This is my pet peeve about computer interfaces. 3000 years ago humans determined that alphabetic words are better than hieroglyphics. Yet we keep putting these little meaningless glyphs on user interfaces when a simple word would be more clear.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||dusoft||1/10/11 12:39 PM|
If you add it via Labs, then the icon appears in the bottom left corner. Google totally showing its unusable side of maps.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||saxen49||1/21/11 3:02 PM|
Sorry guys, but I followed the directions of Goblynn93 and CES1951 and I still don't have the ruler icon near the scale bar. The distance tool is "enabled" but no icon - anyone else have this problem and a fix?
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||abugalum||1/27/11 11:14 AM|
i would suggest this tool www.distancestool.com
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||TopSkierDad||4/14/11 11:57 AM|
Personally, I can't figure out how to use the distance measurement tool even though I used to us it all the time. What else, it's certainly a lot harder to find and use than it used to be. I just have the feeling that with Google out chasing ever-bigger fish, they've stopped paying attention to the little things that made them so popular in the first place.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||jrsubs||6/9/11 9:08 PM|
Truly Google have lost the plot. What a ridiculous unintuitive, difficult to use, shambles of a tool. It used to be fine. It used to be easy to find and easy to use.
WHY is there no normal help for Google Maps that works, and contains useful succinct information? Why the lazy and crazy-making reliance on users having to answer questions on a forum, most often not usefully?
After wasting half an hour searching for info and following three out of twenty confused suggestions, most of which are obvously referring to some other Google Maps, not the one I've got in front of me, I get a distance tool on my screen,but don't know how it got there and certainly don't like using it...
I set up the map so I can see both points I want to measure between.
I click on the tool. THe left pane slides over and obscures one of the points.
I select metric in the window and close it. I measure a line and it comes up in miles. I open and close the window and fiddle around some more, to find that my pointer has changed apparently permanently (why?) and it finally measures in km.
WHY is is so difficult? WHY is google maps so appallingly documented? WHY does google keep changing things that work? WHY are there so many confused people on this page and many others? WHY does google maps continue to act as though the application is a geek thing? MOST OF ALL -- WHY can't a simple help system be implemented where you can dial in "measure distance" and get a straight answer as to how to do it?
Google Maps is a ridiculous user experience.
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||tpoto||6/11/11 2:20 PM|
I agree with everyone above that this is a ridiculously cumbersome and difficult process. Luckily I stumbled across a separate web site that makes everything work simply as it should. Check out
Save this to your browser and just open this whenever you need to measure distance.

Best answer - baseonballs (Google Employee)
As somerandomcharacters mentioned, it hasn't disappeared. What Directory are you talking about...?
Is it Account Settings...? I went through that "Account Settings" Page with a fine tooth comb, and there are NO MAPPLETS, Directories, Ect... The Nearest thing with applications is Google App Engine, and I know that is NOT it...
It worked SO well before... Now they move feature, that is VERY VERY Practical, and no-one can find it, or you have to spend 45 minutes looking for it... I can undo 1000 emails, or see my Inbox High-lighted and Sorted 50 different ways, but cannot find "Distance Measurement Tool......."
|Re: Where is distance measurement tool ??||CL||9/6/11 2:58 AM|
1. Visit maps.google.com.
2. Click the gear icon in the top corner of the page and select Maps Labs from the drop-down menu.
3. Enable the Distance Measurement Tool.
4. Click Save changes.
5. Click the ruler icon at the lower left-hand corner of the map.
6. Click your starting point on the map, then click your destination point to trace the path. A red path will appear on the map between the two locations, and the distance will be shown in the left panel.
