Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Daniel (Google Community Manager) 8/16/12 8:02 AM
Hello Google Latitude users,

We have some new features in Latitude that we’re excited to share with you. Before we do, however, we need to tell you that this new version—Google Maps for Android 6.10—requires you to re-enable location sharing.

Turn on and off location sharing
When you want to stop sharing your location with friends but still use location history, you can now turn on or off location sharing with a single setting. Go to Location settings > Enable location sharing.

Device-specific location reporting
Many of our users now own more than one mobile device, and we’ve heard requests to control which devices report their location. For example, I own a mobile phone and an Android tablet. I like using Latitude on both devices, but regularly leave my tablet at home. I only want to report my location from my phone. To choose which one of your devices should report your location, go to Location settings > Report from this device.

Important note: after you install GMM 6.10 you’ll need to open Location settings and turn on Enable location sharing if you’d like to continue sharing with your friends (even if you were already sharing before the upgrade). If you forget to do this, you’ll see a reminder the next time you open your friends list.

Thanks, The Google Latitude Team

Update: The Latitude widget is no longer available. You can view your friends' locations quickly by touching the Latitude icon, or by turning on the Latitude layer in Google Maps.

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing defaria 8/16/12 8:11 AM
You think we could fix Latitude so that the "automatically check in" would actually work?!? I can count on the fingers of one hand how many times Latitude has automatically checked me into my home address or my work address for that matter...
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing gaboo 8/16/12 8:17 AM
Thank you! The device specific setting is much welcome :)
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Todd F 8/16/12 8:18 AM
Defaria,

Do you have wifi on? I have a 99% success rate with check-in's at home, work, and businesses if wifi is on. No need to connect to an access point, just has to be on.

And I didn't need to re-enable location sharing on my Galaxy Nexus. It was already on after the update.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing mars3142 8/16/12 8:20 AM
I want the feature back, that latitude post my location (city) into my Google Talk status. This was a labs feature and is disabled a long time ago and there is no other feature available now.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Nick Barrett 8/16/12 8:23 AM
I had this issue also. I found that uninstalling and re-installing always helped, but only for a few days/weeks.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Samitosxx 8/16/12 8:25 AM
De hecho desde hace 2 o 3 actualizaciones me sucede lo mismo, no hace los check-in automáticos... a que se debe??
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing RudyWall 8/16/12 8:26 AM
The old features "My location button", traffic, metro lines, satelite view, etc. is not more for this new version to Samsung Galaxy Mini android 2.3.6
I still have the old version because is better for me device mini.

Yes where is the Latitude widget ?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing mrsbelpit 8/16/12 8:46 AM
Do you have to have location sharing enabled to use the location history in the map app?  I had location history enabled, but nothing is there.  I do not have sharing enabled.  Galaxy Nexus 4.1.1

Latitude widget is gone and not available anymore.

Just FYI...the Traffic widget is still there.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing dyndragon 8/16/12 9:12 AM
Latitude widget is missing on my Galaxy Nexus running JB, and my Nexus 7 also running JB.

Also, is the battery usage when latitude is turned on improved now? Ever since version 6, it has been KILLING my battery. Previously I could make it at the end of a work day with at least 50% left, but post-version 6, i hardly get 20%. BetterBatteryStats show that it's a Maps process that keeps the phone wakelocked. I now have my phone's location manually set in Maps, and then I use a 3rd party app Backitude to update my location with better, more fine tuned settings that are much more battery friendly.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing L0sTS0uL 8/16/12 9:16 AM
Latitude has more potential.. Why don't you give the feature to find my phone to the Latitude? Doens't make sense that i can share my location to my friends but i can't find my phone if i lost it.

I know, i can download some apps in google play but Google can do a better and integrated job.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing DrElwinRansom 8/16/12 9:16 AM
I joined this group just to voice my displeasure about losing the Latitude widget! Or rather, to express my fond expectation of an even better widget in the near future. ;-)
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing bcmerrell 8/16/12 9:29 AM
Also not happy about the missing widget.  Widgets differentiate Android from iOS, and it's just damn useful.  Why take it away?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing petrosclark 8/16/12 9:37 AM
Sad to see the Latitude widget gone....

However, I love the new Location History stuff!  Good job developers!  However, I wish I could see the Dashboard as well (with how many miles I have left to reach the moon and the average stats).  I do miss that.

Also, for anyone who loves Latitude the best 3rd party app for it is called Backitude.  It offers so much more customization to Latitude.  I highly recommend checking it out.  It's free in the Play Store.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Alex.P 8/16/12 9:43 AM
Latitude Widget is gone after 6.10 update (GNexus, 4.1.1)
Had to uninstall the update to get it back :(
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Bascule 8/16/12 9:52 AM
Daniel,
As you were inquiring after the device and os versions, can we assume that the disappearance of the widget is a bug rather than a feature?
Cheers,
B

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Terry Cameron 8/16/12 10:36 AM
Great to see the device reporting options come to Android 2.3.3 now. I've always had a struggle between my tablet and phone.

It's not the first time the Latitude widget has disappeared, but when we get it back can it actually work and show where I'm checked in? Usually it just says unknown, even if I just checked in somewhere.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing TurboChan 8/16/12 11:30 AM
I noticed the addition of these setting options in 6.9.2. Nice additions, but what happens if you DO report from two devices (I have a similar setup to you where I leave my tablet at home)? Will Location History be able to differentiate between the two devices? Or does it just get confused and mix up all of them?

Also, Check-in no longer saves the preference for who you want to share with; it just always defaults to only "Friends on Latitude". It used to remember what you last preferred.

I can't confirm if the Latitude widget is gone as I'm now holding out on updating. But the widget doesn't even work on 6.9.2 anyway. Using Nexus S on Jelly Bean.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Fifth313ment 8/16/12 12:38 PM
Wake up Daniel M!? Most users can barely check their voice-mail and now you are asking them to fiddle through the settings and re-enable something they have already set? Why not just leave it enabled? What is wrong with you guys at Google do you like making things more difficult? Also real-time updating, Gone... Check-Ins for non-Google+ users, Gone... Review writing without Google+, Gone... Latitude Widget, Gone... You guys are great at ruining a good thing. Why can't I leave a review now without Google+? I don't want Google+ and I'll never use it. So you have lose hundreds of reviews from me as it won't let me leave them. The app size is now huge and the app won't function on many slower phones.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Dr. Zircon 8/16/12 12:47 PM
These sound like excellent updates!

It seems that I can no longer share a check-in with just "friends on latitude" - did that option disappear?  Would love to have that back; I don't like all my check-ins clogging up my friends Google+ stream.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing petrosclark 8/16/12 1:08 PM
If someone can barely check their voicemail on their smartphone, they probably don't even know what Google Latitude is or that it is even on their phone...
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Daniel (Google Community Manager) 8/16/12 1:08 PM
Thanks for your reports, I can confirm that the Latitude widget is no longer available. You can view your friends' locations quickly by touching the Latitude icon, or by turning on the Latitude layer in Google Maps.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing petrosclark 8/16/12 1:11 PM
Any plans of bringing it back?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing kgeissler 8/16/12 1:12 PM
Was the widget removed intentionally or was it an error?  Will it be coming back?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing ElkHair14 8/16/12 1:46 PM
I'm hoping it was an error, and that it is coming back...passing this along to the Google rep...
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Gidu 8/16/12 1:53 PM
Hi Everybody!

I have got the next problem.
I updated google maps on my phone.
After that, my acquaintances/friends were lost from latitude app and website.
My phone configuration is the next: <Samsung Nexus S, Android 4.1 Jelly Beans>
What do you think, What's the problem?

Thank you in advance
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing kgeissler 8/16/12 1:58 PM
Do you have another Android device or tablet?  If so, make sure you have "enable sharing location" turned on, on all your devices.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing sam1am 8/16/12 2:07 PM
Does this update fix the bug that resets the map when an initial gps fix is made, clearing any searches in progress?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Gidu 8/16/12 2:08 PM

I don't have another. And I enabled sharing location on app and web-site. And it is refreshing my location. That's ok. But i'm not seeing my friends. That is like my friendlist has been deleted
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing sam1am 8/16/12 2:09 PM
You sound kinda like a self-entitled prick, so I'm sure Google doesn't mind losing hundreds of your no-doubt stellar reviews.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing sam1am 8/16/12 2:11 PM
I've seen this before. Your friends list hasn't been deleted - you should still be able to see them online. As far as fixiing it goes - I don't know. It happened to me with some versions of Google Maps and not others... You might try uninstalling the update (Settings > Applications) and reinstalling or just leaving it uninstalled until the next update if you can't get it working.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing mlado 8/16/12 2:16 PM
But I don't want to click the Latitude icon. I want to see my friends' location through the Latitude widget. That's the point for having widgets. Isn't it?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Gidu 8/16/12 2:20 PM
That was my first idea, but it's not ok.  The issue existed on the older version of the software as well and my friends can't refresh my status
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Smokiewolf 8/16/12 3:20 PM
I liked having the widget on my home screen!!!  Bring back the widget!!!
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Smokiewolf 8/16/12 3:21 PM
YES!!!  This is why I liked the widget!  Instead of having to open the app then clicking on check-in, I could click check-in and then have it open right to there.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing jaxonhollis 8/16/12 8:23 PM
Hello Daniel. Simply - sad to say but the truth is : it is going worse and worse each update with functionality of Latitude.

Very disappointing.

why was the widget removed? I'm one of many who liked having the widget, would have been nice to at least had a heads up about this... please bring it back/make it better.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Bascule 8/16/12 11:41 PM
Daniel.M,

Can you (or anyone else from Google) explain why this was just removed without any mention? Many of us have waisted our time un-installing, re-installing and posting on here

I want google latitude widget to come back!!!!

Why is google getting less user pleasing more and more?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing gdunbar 8/17/12 12:09 AM
With 6.10 it also looks like the latitude reporting interval was increased to every minute or two, I noticed a huge chunk of my battery today consumed by maps. I like the location reporting but not at the expense of half my battery!  It seemed to be much more efficient in 6.9.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing jaxonhollis 8/17/12 12:34 AM
Hello Daniel again ..

I am also very excited to tell to you or to Google maps/latitude team that newer versions of Latitude working worse and worse (that was that truth I was speaking previously).
For example :
- yesterday I was 2 mins ago 40km away from current location when traveling. I saw it on friends phone who was with me when travelling. Thats definitely wrong isnt it..
- removing widget has no any logical/technical reason. It is only visualisation of some friends on the desktop. Bring widget back.
- please stop play on the card of consuption and battery. Allow us users how often we want to update our location. Version after version Latitude service updates position slower and slower. Even I am on the way, even driving 130 km/h, even Google maps is on foreground, even battery is full or on Cigarette Load charger and still it updated my position once for 10-15 minutes.. Please tell me WHY?
- Please make some sunnydays color themes. Yellow road and white field it is silly when driving at sunny days! Yellow and white that definitelly tragical color combination.
- More user settings would be usefull. Why only automatical location updating is now possible? I want update my location after each minute or two. I dont care about battery when I am driving I have phone on the charger. So where is problem?
So make two choices. First automatical (let your greenpeace developers sleep well) and second User settings let user can chose what he/she wants..
- also when application runs of background it takes position only from GSM BTS stations.. Why? Why not also from GPS? .. GSM/BTS first negotiating between antennas takes about 2Watts. And it is pretty too much. GPS chip cannot take more.
- more user settings would be great.

and last thing Daniel - PLEASE READ AND LISTEN WHAT WE, YOUR USERS ARE TELLING YOU. Also your feedback will be great. Endless silence from your it is worsest thing that company can do to users.

thank you very much and be positive! ;)

jaxon

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing jaxonhollis 8/17/12 12:57 AM
I knew somebody will writte this .. :))

This is reason why to make two options for updating

- automatical update (made in google, optimized by google)
- and user update. Let anybody set own update interval due to own conditions.

My case is that my machine updating position slowly - each 15 or 20 minuttes and sometimes slower.
Your case is oposite.
I dont care about battery consuption
You care about battery consuption.

And this is nearly impossible to solve it by one solution.

Thank you.

Thanks.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing skatergirl 8/17/12 6:17 AM
I absolutely agree! Auto check in that works would be fabulous!
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing skatergirl 8/17/12 6:21 AM
I love the update, but unfortunately I have not been able to see the new functions because the new Maps update is causing the Rezound to reboot upon opening the app.

I do like the turn on and turn off function, though I won't be turning my sharing off. I really like the new "report from this device" function. I have a tablet that is not always with me, so my family often gets confused as to where I am.

Thanks for the updates. I can't wait to finally get a chance to see them. I hope the Rezound issue is fixed quickly. Oh, I have also heard the HTC Sensation is crashing with the new Maps as well!
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing GeorgeyPorgey 8/17/12 6:49 AM
WE WANT LATITUDE WIDGET BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Otherwise, I'll end up uninstalling 6.10 to stick with the widget....  Is Latitude supposed to stay relevant without a widget?  #WTF
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing RudyWall 8/17/12 8:41 AM
My location, my places and layers option missing from menu option. Using samsung galaxy mini, bring back these options soon.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Patrick P. 8/17/12 8:52 AM
I was unistalling restarting and reinstalling, thinking that it was the ics/jellybean stupid bug of not showing widget again. This is a very disappointing move by google. Widget is one of the killer feature for Android and now google is not supporting it? What a shame.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing BenjRubenstein 8/17/12 10:39 AM
Everyone wants the widget. Why would y'all remove it!?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Terry Cameron 8/17/12 10:47 AM
If I remember correctly, this is not not the first time the widget has gone missing guys. Hopefully they'll bring it back in soon.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing lashibear 8/17/12 11:20 AM
When I was using my Latitude on the computer it asked if i wanted to allow or deny it being able to detect my actual location (meaning what city the computer I'm using is in) but I don't know how to change it back because I want it to detect where my phone is not what city I'm using the computer. How do I fix it?

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Gomcse 8/18/12 10:39 AM
This is ridiculous. When you upgrade something, PLEASE DON'T BREAK WHAT WORKS.  It's SO annoying!  WE WANT THE WIDGET BACK.  I'd rather roll back to a previous version WITH the widget than have all the new "features" you gave us!
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Gomcse 8/18/12 10:40 AM
I COMPLETELY AGREE with you.  The Widget made Latitude USEFUL and gave us a quick way to refresh.  Now there's NOTHING. How incredibly STUPID.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Gomcse 8/18/12 10:46 AM
So, "Let's make it better by BREAKING IT"????

How annoying.

Think you guys could FIX it back from STUPID to WORKING?

Bad decision - this is an incredibly useful widget that makes Android stand out in comparison to iOS. Please bring it back!

Also is lost the ability to search for starred places. Sure I can see the places I starred, but there seems to be no way to quickly find a particular place from the 200+ list of starred lat-lon that I have marked in the past.

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Mr Dotwood 8/22/12 2:23 AM
Nice updates but the communication could be better.

I use an Iphone and a galaxy Tab. The tab downloaded the new latitude update automaticly and I was not aware. It seemed that due to this and the default "do not share" on the tab I could not see anything on Latitude, on the iphone app but also on the website and there, there was no options what so ever about sharing the location.

I would like to suggest to make these options also available on the website too next to the mobile apps as that is the primary interface (ofcourse you will be using the apps to report your location more often than using the website but again I would expect I can manage ALL options with regards to my google account on the web)

The widget is a shame as I used it primarily on my igoogle which also is a shame Google is stopping that service by the end of the year as it is my startpage on all computers and i havent found any product that does it as simple and integrated as google does :-(.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing FredBloggs13 8/22/12 4:29 AM
You've got to be joking right?

It one of the best features on my phone, a quick look at here my family and friends are.

Bring back the widget.

Me too Google.. Please bring it back... Why abandon a nicely integrated feature!??
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Mattolo 8/22/12 8:14 AM
Latitude is useless for me without the widget!
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing AdrianAllen 8/22/12 11:16 AM
This makes Latitude much more difficult to use.

The widget was literally my primary interface to Google Maps. The widget, as far as I'm concerned, was what Latitude was *FOR*.

I will be downgrading to the old version of Maps and I will not upgrade until forced to do so or until the widget comes back. I don't care what other features you add, this was the most useful thing on the whole phone, and regardless of the fact that I can still access roughly the same functionality, now it takes opening up maps, waiting for it to load, then clicking on Maps > Latitude layer and waiting for that to update - giant pain in the *** now compared to handy feature that I didn't have to think about before.

Hi Daniel,

I take it the widget was removed intentionally.

Isn't the presence and variety of widgets the big feature that differentiates Android from other platforms?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing backitude 8/22/12 7:39 PM
Sorry, I can't offer any support for the widget users but for those who were talking about battery usage-  Backitude can be used to completely replace Latitude "updating."  Take complete control of your Google location updating to Latitude, by setting the location reporting in Settings to "set my location" with an arbitrary point.  This will essentially turn off location detection by Google Maps, and allow you to strictly use Backitude to detect and update your location.  This setting in Latitude is ideal because your friends will still see your updated Latitude location via Backitude, but Backitude will give you complete control of when, how often, how accurate..etc  Even allows manual "push updates" to other friends also using the app and having the feature enabled.  It's free in the Play Store, so check it out.  thanks!

Please reinstate the widget; it's one of my favourite features of Android as a whole. It seems a bizarre thing to remove. Is there a more general Google Maps widget? I couldn't see one.

+1 for widget!
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing quietvice 8/23/12 11:33 AM
Add another to the chorus to bring back the widget - it wasn't broken, didn't need fixing.  Thanks.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing mlinhart 8/25/12 4:34 PM
Thanks Daniel!  I wish it was easier to find your post.  I've spent the last 3 days trying to figure out how to fix my iphone/PC Web Browser Latitude and didn't realize that my android Latitude/maps was recently updated and it broke my latitude on my other two favorite methods to use Latitude.

Maybe you can somehow set the google search for topics to return your post when someone searches for something like "All my friends are gone in Latitude"

Thanks!!!
Michael

------------------------

One day I used my Mobile phone Latitude and all friends were gone.  I checked my PC web browser Latitude and all friends were gone there too!  I freaked!

Finally found a fix!  I use latitude on an iphone, android phone, and PC web browser.

======================

The FIX!

Uninstall and reinstall GOOGLE MAPS on Android, run Google Maps and then go into settings/location-settings and enable Location Sharing.  THAT'S WHEN ALL MY FRIENDS MAGICALLY CAME BACK ON IPHONE, ANDROID, AND PC WEB BROWSER!

Google updated Android google Maps recently and it requires you to re-enable location sharing.

Bring back the widget.  The widget was a vital part of organizing my and others time.

Who ever is the Product manager for this app should be talking to users about how they use it and want to use it.  Removing a feature without every a release note is serious flawed thinking.

I also want to express my sadness at the loss of the latitude widget.  Please bring it back!!!
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Thorsten Niemann 8/30/12 3:53 AM
This is bad because open Maps and switch to the Latitude Layer is not very comfotable and tooks too long time.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Patrick P. 9/4/12 11:31 AM
Gave 1-star rating in Google Play. Maybe y'all should do the same so Google it will affect the over-all rating. And hopefully Google will see it.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Terry Cameron 9/4/12 8:19 PM
Sorry, but one feature being removed doesn't kill the awesomeness that is the rest of maps. I will not rate low out of spite.

Well said  Terry
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing zitab 9/11/12 5:07 PM
Seriously, why was this widget removed? It's beyond my comprehension why you'd make it more difficult for users to be able to see shared locations. Isn't the whole point of location sharing so you can collect your data and dominate the world? So, you made it an easy pill to swallow with the widget; it's fun! it's neat!; it's safe! and now it's gone. More clicks and more time wasted trying to get to the app and then to see what I want to see. Sorry, but that doesn't make any sense.
All of your overhauls of Gmail, Reader, Plus et al have added more time and trouble to things that were perfectly fine the way they were, not to mention more efficient. I guess we just add this one to the list, huh? It's such a shame that Google is too big for it's britches now and has adopted the Jobs/Zuckerberg philosophy of having the consumer bending over and taking it. I really thought you were better than that Google. Maybe you could bring the Latitude Widget back prove that you are.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing felixkat42 9/14/12 5:26 PM
wow please bring the widget back
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing PatrickTschopp 9/18/12 6:05 PM
Please give us the widget back! I uninstall the latest version so i have the widget back.. maybe i should go to Nokia...
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Terry Cameron 9/18/12 9:29 PM
How is going to Nokia going to do you any good? They don't have a latitude widget either.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Robert Ca 9/19/12 5:45 PM
I agree with everyone else here. What possible good is gained by removing the widget? Does it speed up maps or something? I don't understand the reasoning behind it. If ppl don't won't the widget on thier main screen then they didn't have to have it. Maps is a very good program and very useful but easy quick access to latitude was a major plus. We are probaly all barking up a tree by asking for the widget back but there are other tracking programs out there.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing BenjRubenstein 9/19/12 6:45 PM
Is Google intentionally trying to tick people off? With today's update, they removed the Latitude icon too. Now I have no widget or icon to use as a quick way of jumping into my Latitude list. WHAT. THE. HECK!?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing treebles 9/19/12 6:50 PM
Ben,
although I cannot confirm because I am still using Maps v. 6.8.1, it is my understanding that Latitude is a feature of Google Maps now and can be accessed via the drop down menu within the Google Maps for Android app.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing BenjRubenstein 9/19/12 7:54 PM
Of course it can, but it's ALWAYS had a widget and an icon that takes you directly to Latitude. Now they're both gone.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Bascule 9/19/12 11:59 PM
Icon follows widget into oblivion. Seems to me they will be moving the focus of location sharing somewhere else perhaps? Google+ perhaps? Don't know. Maps would seem the sensible place to me. Any reassuring messages from Google please?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing alan68 9/20/12 5:53 AM
I have lost the latitude icon as well as the widget...can only access via maps. Not happy Jan, can I at least restore the icon on my home screen???
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Binary01 9/20/12 8:29 AM
>>>Update: The Latitude widget is no longer available. You can view your friends' locations quickly by touching the Latitude icon, or by turning on the Latitude layer in Google Maps
Did someone from the UI dept lose touch counting the numbers of clicks to see where your mates are or to do a checkin ? Send that guy back to school please !

Use to be ... turn on screen - oh yeah look there they are.
Now ... click on maps.. click on latitude.. wait a bit .. click on friends list.. click on mate - or click left or right ...

Nope - seems easier the old way thanks.

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing MusX 9/20/12 11:12 AM
Latitude icon gone today. Can you explain why?
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Xenokira 9/20/12 12:51 PM
First the Latitude widget was removed, then users had to manually re-enable sharing (with no warning or explanation in the app from Google), and now the Latitude icon is gone.

Is Google trying to slowly kill Latitude?  Just as location sharing is just starting to get popular...
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Karen O 9/23/12 7:47 AM
I share my disappointment that the widget is gone.  Cumbersome to get to the latitude friends locations now.

SUCKS.  Widget's are such a powerful part of Android, and this one was killer!!  Bring back the latitude widget!!!
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Mandabar 10/2/12 12:15 PM
Well damn. Guess that means I'm downgrading back down to a maps that DOES have a widget. It was handy to not have to turn on the battery hogging full time gps run of GMaps when I didn't need it.

Just wanted to know where my friends and family are generally at from a glance.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing dms 10/17/12 9:10 AM
My latitude widget has also gone, cant find it in widget list at all. Running Android 4.1.1 on unlocked nexus S
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Terry Cameron 10/18/12 11:38 AM
The Latitude icon shortcut is also gone since the last update. Is Google just killing off Latitude here? This sucks and is a MAJOR annoyance when trying to just check in somewhere quick. BRING the widget and shortcut back!
Google, you dissapoint me. dwilliam16 10/31/12 9:58 PM
I don't normally do these, but Google seriously took steps backwards here; all the people I know who use Latitude LOVED that widget - being able to just glance and see if someone was back from a trip, etc. is great!  Yes I understand that the same info is "only" a few clicks away in the map app, but sometimes we don't want the map open - we just want a glance, a status update if you will.  That widget was actually THE selling point in bringing my dad to Android from IOS when it first came out.  And even if the same info is a few clicks away, it's the principle of the thing - if you are going to kill a feature, at least please give us the courtesy of actually explaining why you killed it with something more than "Update: The Latitude widget is no longer available." Was there a major change in the way Maps works that made it incompatible?

Could we have a vote please on bringing it back?
Google, you dissapoint me. PatrickTschopp 11/18/12 5:09 AM
Still missing the widget!

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Said Elnaffar 12/24/12 11:57 AM
I'm facing the same problem -- I added friends and they accepted back but still cannot see them under my Friends' list.

The other chronic problem is that the already added friends are not updated frequntly enough although I am using the Backitude app.

When will Google pay attention to its Latitude? It is problematic for almost 3 years, since its inception!

Widget please!

Also can't re-add friends! Is this a beta?

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Sniipe 2/1/13 8:22 AM
just came here to say I miss the widget.  I don't understand why it was removed.  It nice to have.  subscribing to updates.
Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Kristy Lytle 2/14/13 9:38 PM
OK, Daniel. We want to know WHY The widget was removed. Continually saying 'I can confirm The widget is no longer available' is NOT a sufficient response. Part of customer service is giving direct answers to simple questions or a reasonable explanations as to why you cannot disclose The information.

I'd also like to point out that The widget is OPTIONAL.  That means people can disable it or just not use it if they choose. The point is The devs took away our choice with no explanation, no apology, nothing.

Please put this issue to rest and answer these two questions:

Will The widget be coming back?
Why was The decision made to remove The widget?

If you cannot answer this, please direct me to someone who can answer.

I appreciate a quick response, especially since your credibility in customer service is on The line. (Wouldn't most of you all agree?)

Sincerely,
A disappointed Latitude/Android user.

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Smokiewolf 2/15/13 12:21 AM
I have switched from Android to Apple and although there is no widget here either, I do like being able to have Latitude as a stand-alone application.  It's the next best thing to having the widget back, I guess.  So, if you're upgrading your phone, consider the iPhone.

Re: Latitude (GMM 6.10) update - Enable location sharing Lisa Pemberton 3/6/13 7:34 AM
Bring back Latitude!!!! I speak for all expats who feel less homesick by seeing where their friends an family are as well as all navgationally challenged whose friends can come find thing when theyre hopelessly lost. Latitude gave me great peace of mind on my bike trip across South Korea last year knowing my friend would send help if I remained motionless for too long! Most useful app Ive ever had. I miss it :( ♥
