|Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/8/11 7:22 PM|
Summarize the issue:
Link to the map or business listing in question if applicable: http://g.co/maps/cmc6g
I spent two months plotting over a thousand places of ancient Greece. Google maps suddenly in the last few days won't allow me to move beyond the first page on the list of placemarks on the left. It acts erratically when I click on the number 2, 3, etc, or when I click "next" sometimes the placemarks on the map change but the list always stays on the first place.
Any ideas what's happening? Is it the case that i posted enough placemarks to break google maps?
Any ideas how to fix it would be appreciated!
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/9/11 3:51 PM|
To follow up on the problem: There is something definitely wrong with Google Maps.
I tried the map on several different computers, OSs, and every browser available. The problem is still there. I can't go to the next page in the placemarks list on the left of the google map.
Originally I thought maybe I reached some limit with too many placemarks, but I imported an earlier version of the same map with far fewer pins (one I know worked fine when I saved it) and I still can't navigate beyond the first page. It makes it incredibly difficult to work with the maps any longer. If this persists I have to abandon all work until it's fixed.
Does anyone else have the same problem? Any solutions?
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||PeakVT||10/9/11 10:31 PM|
I am having the same problem. Clicking on "Next" gives me the markers for page 2, but the list stays the same. Sometimes the whole left side is blanked out instead of re-loading the list for the first page. If I click on an item in the list after clicking on next, the popup still appears on the map even though the marker is gone.
Any map with more than one page of markers is effectively useless right now.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||weductape||10/10/11 9:13 AM|
I thought I was going nuts! 13 pages 2800 entries... map goes to page 1 through 4 and the left panel stays at page 1.
First noticed Oktober 5, 2011. It was verified ok on the 4th by multiple users.
When clicked on, the markers display the correct information on the map but since the left panel is still on page 1 and its impossible to see adjacent listings which are in alphabetical order. By logging off google the map still presents all 2800 markers and as above displays the correct info when you click on the marker but the left panel is still dead on page 1.
The problem button is useless as its only good for reporting TOS or abuse issues.
It's not us or our machines/cache/browser/geographical location....Sunspots? How can we get to GOOGLE to provide their help?
PS. I have also noted that when adding a marker and putting it in order on the left panel that the scrolling feature with the arrows is degraded, but at least there's a workaround for that one.
Misery appears to love company here!
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/10/11 5:47 PM|
Thanks for responding PeakVT and weductape. At least I know I am not alone.
I think it was around the 5th that I noticed the problem too. But even before that there were signs of erratic behavior when moving form page to page. Sometimes I'd click on page number 7 (for example), Google Maps would go to the right page, but miraculosly the numbers will change showing that I am on page 5 with no indication that there are more pages.
Unfortunately, it makes it very painful to add more markers, especially knowing that most of the viewers won't be able to get beyond that first page.
I think Google needs to restart one of their google maps servers and I hope it's not a permanent problem.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||bw0042||10/10/11 9:25 PM|
I'm also experiencing this and just posted a duplicate thread about the problem before I saw this one. Guess we're on the same server. :\
Have long noticed flakiness with My Maps, but no bug has been as bad as this one - it's making the map basically unusable.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||mtumtu||10/11/11 5:04 AM|
I'm having this problem, too. When I try to go to page 2 of my map (I hate that there are two pages btw, Google), the markers for the second page show up on the map, but the markers and explanations in the left-hand bar are still the first-page ones.
This means I can't reorder any of the page 2 markers because I can't access them.
Maybe this bug is here because Google is in the process of finally getting rid of the pagination in custom maps (I can dream, can't I?) Anyway, it has broken my map and has all of the people who depend on it very confused.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||wrinnov||10/11/11 8:01 AM|
I'm experiencing a similar issue for the last few days. My map has placemarks splitted into 5-6 pages, I can currently access only the first two or three pages. Furthermore, the page navigation links are showing only 4 pages, and always displaying the first page as the current page. When clicking on page 4 link, placemark list becomes empty. Checked under IE, FF, Opera, noticed about Oct 7.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/11/11 2:42 PM|
I read in another post by a Google employee that they "pushed" some things out recently. I hope these new pushes didn't break the basic navigation of the maps.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||ChrisHampson81||10/11/11 4:52 PM|
Yes, here too,
I open on one of my large maps beginning on page 1 and click to page 2 and the map seems to display markers from both pages and the list pane only displays page 1.
Clicking through further pages seems to continue populate the map display with markers of past pages. This causes strange issues when selecting markers and using the edit button.
It seemed to start happening to me when they fixed this issue http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/maps/thread?tid=46a3b6732cfefce6&hl=en
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||act.actrees||10/12/11 1:31 PM|
Having the exact same problems here. What was a 2-page placemark list now appears broken into 4+ pages, but I can't click through to any of the other pages, and map is only displaying the new, shorter list of placemarks on page 1.
Anyone heard anything about Google attempts to fix this problem, or know how we might contact a Google employee and request they take a look?
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/13/11 3:29 PM|
I filled a report by clicking on the "report a problem" link on the bottom right of the google map. I haven't heard back but I hope someone at Google is looking into it.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||weductape||10/14/11 2:24 PM|
Thanks Thomás, Every time I tried that link it was asking if there was some immoral content I was reporting. I can't believe that we are the only ones with multiple pages suffering from what is obviously a systemic issue. I will try finding a Googleite on one of the other threads and attempt to get up close and personal in a friendly sort of way. Hopefully your Report a Problem link will work.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||mtumtu||10/16/11 5:34 AM|
Google, please fix this problem. My map is completely useless right now until this pagination bug is fixed. There are a lot of people depending on the map for our public health research project in Tanzania.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Blvd||10/16/11 4:53 PM|
Experiencing the exact damn same thing!! Has *ruined* being able to update and use (and PUBLISH) the multi-page map our team had been working on for 10 months.
Now reduced to making a NEW map each time one "page" fills up, because navigation to the next page doesn't work. (Waited months for Google Maps to fix the "hanging save" button; now this crops up.)
This is a massive usability/functionality problem and I hope they can troubleshoot and fix it very soon! Getting really hard for companies to rely on Google Maps any more. It's embarrassing.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||mwolfemindspring||10/17/11 12:23 PM|
In addition to the problem above, which I am having. It seems that the pins are now identified only with one page. So when I open my map, not all of the pins show. When I go to page 2... different pins show but the page 1 pins do not... I want them all at the same time...!!!
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||jh43051||10/17/11 2:57 PM|
Same problem here. Sometimes all of the markers fromt he last page stay as well when you hit next and they build up until the list just stops working and becomes blank. **I HAVE FOUND A WORKAROUND**. This may seem really esoteric but it has worked for me about 50% of the time so far. You must follow these exact steps:
Hit Next and then hit Edit. Then click on one of the "old" items in the list and the list should refresh. Problem solved right? No. You then have to click edit again, click in the map on one of the new items, then just hit done. THEN you must zoom all the way out and circle the globe at least once....this seems to sortof clear the map... I can't explain it any other way. Repeat these steps for every time you hit next and if all goes well you will make it to the end of your list and can continue editing. Good luck and remember it only works about 50% of the time so try it several times. This is ridiculous, Google.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||nancymack||10/17/11 3:04 PM|
I am having a similar problem on my map. I am mapping trees and now that I am mapping my 200th tree and above, it will not show the list of trees on page 2 - only shows page 1 list but map of page 2. I also seem to have a buggy response when trying to edit.
I wish there is a way to see all the trees in one page even if the list page changes. I plant the trees in honor of my daughter and as a program for others to honor people or events. It would be great to be able to see these in chronological order. I am a senior citizen who is not very computer savvy and would love to know what to do to resolve this! My project is The Susie Forest and my map is here: http://g.co/maps/npgk. Please help Google! Thank you!
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||jh43051||10/17/11 3:08 PM|
Suggestion for Google: I think the quick fix for this that would probably make alot of people happy (including me) is to have an option of displaying all markers and lines on one page.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||jh43051||10/17/11 3:11 PM|
Nancymack, this isn't a perfect solution but if you open your map in Google Earth, you are able to see all your markers (trees) at once. Google Earth is a free download. Not sure if that helps any.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/17/11 3:24 PM|
ha ha, I am waiting for someone from Google to come and say "what are you guys trying to do all this work with google maps. Its only meant for the odd person to pin their business on it and for all the android phones to find it so we can increase our profit margins".
At least this is how it feels to me, trying to do something different and getting one bug after another with no response from google. I began using Google Earth to add my placemarks and then I would import that KML to My Places. Now the import doesn't work either :(
jh4351: there is a way to list all pins on one page:
First get the URL of the KML export. When viewing your My Map, right
click the 'View in Google Earth' link and copy the link to the
clipboard (probably something like 'Copy Shortcut' or 'Copy Link
Address' - depends on your browser')
Now display your KML again. I have found it best to open a new Google
Maps window, probably just go-to http://maps.google.com
and paste in the URL copied earlier INTO the search box, and click the
Search Maps button.
You should now get a display of your My Map - that doesn't page.
I hope this helps you, but unfortunately, once you do this you lose the edit button.
For the first time since Keyhole (Google bought them and renamed them to Google Earth) I googled "alternatives to Google Earth" - way to put your competitors on the radar Google
Surprisingly there are plenty out there and some would import the kml file and would work fine for us who don't care for creating driving direction apps. Google Maps has excellent detail though so I'll wait a bit longer for a solution before I commit. While I wait, I am learning how to use these other (yahoo, bing, Nasa etc) maps though...
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/19/11 3:19 PM|
After reporting the problem through the link at the bottom-right of the Google Maps window, I did get an email that the issue was escalated and that I would be notified when it's fixed.
At least the "import" button began working again, so I can work on Google Earth and then import the changes to the My Map. This, along with linking only to the map with ALL the placemarks listed on the left seems like a good way to handle the problem for now. For people who arrive to the map not through my link, they won't be able to navigate beyond the first page though.

|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/21/11 6:09 PM|
I just noted that whenever I click on the pages at the bottom of the placemark list (on the left), a new "layer" opens up. You can find these in the pop-up, or flyout window under the map/satellite toggle at the top right of Google Maps.
Every time you click a number, a new "layer" opens up, but it doesn't have a checkmark. The newer maps are on top. If you click and add the checkmark to the top "layer" then you get to that page on the list.
At least now I can navigate the list even with the extra steps. It won't help my viewers who would know nothing about such trick, but I hope this helps google solve the problem (if they are reading this, otherwise, could the mod please forward this upward?)
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||weductape||10/21/11 6:20 PM|
Thomás, I tried a KML export and save to make a secure copy of my map and found that it only went about 5 pages in. On a 13 page map with 2800 entries 5 pages is useless. Here's hoping your escalation is successful in bringing a quick end to our collective misery.
Note to interested parties: If all you want is to view all of your markers on the map then bring your map up and log out of google.
Yeah I know you can't edit it in this mode but anyone who is editing their maps on a failed system should think twice before continuing.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||weductape||10/22/11 10:43 PM|
Hi guys... Temporary pseudo fix... at least it works on G-Chrome
Well I don't know if anyone else noticed but...
If you right click the page number and select open in a new tab guess what?
You get the page, the left bar, and the map in concert with each other.
I am currently looking at thirteen tabs (one for each page of my map) and it all appears to be there.
I don't know if editing on one tab universally changes and ripples through all the tabs or not but if it does this is going to make some of my updates easier than the old method of advancing through the map in the same Tab.
Hope this helps until they fix this damn thing.

Editing under the above conditions appears to work for moving, adding, and deleting markers and editing info in the information blocks.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/23/11 6:11 AM|
That's great weductape! Now we can at least edit our maps. It still doesn't help the unsuspecting viewer that tries to navigate a map but I hope Google engineers have enough to work with now.

Thanks weductape! Tried your method. At least now I can edit placemarks on other pages now. X my fingers. & hope Google comes up w a better solution soon.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||jarim||10/24/11 8:30 AM|
In my map idea is to have _ALL_ placemarks visible at once and paging breaks the idea completely. Shame.

Thomás, have you heard anything on this lately from the G-men?
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||10/27/11 6:48 PM|
No word from Google yet weductape. It's interesting that some google employees and "top coordinators" are active answering other posts but no one has given us any information if someone is aware of the issue and if anyone is working on it. At least we have found two good ways to continue our work. Let's hope the Google engineers are continuing their work in the background.

Someone has indicated this problem has been answered and in reality all we have is workarounds for the editors. The fact is that the program is still broke and Google appears to be oblivious to that fact. Any ideas on bubbling this up or should we just start another string and not reference the fixes?
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||11/3/11 6:38 AM|
I agree that the issue is ongoing and the only thing that we have in this thread is two ways of sidestepping the issue.
For the mods who don't understand the problem:
The numbers that allow you to move between pages on the list don't work. Clicking page 2 does not take one to page 2. Instead it refreshes the page 1 list.
This is a major problem for us who have MyMaps with more than 200 placemarks, and the answers in this thread provide a small relief for the pain (opening each page in a separate browser window, or closing each of the "extra" layers that open up in the map list)
In addition, and most importantly, it is a major issue for viewers who visit these maps to get some meaningful information. Most of these viewers will look at page one, then will try to click on the navigation aid (numbers) to see the rest of the map. Once they realize that no matter what number they click, they stay on page one they will a) think it's Groundhog day and shrug, b) search their vocabulary of expletives for an appropriate exorcism, c) realize Google Maps is broken and move on to find another resource.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||peter8dg||11/3/11 8:10 AM|
Actually it's more complicated that that. When you click "2", the map (right) pane is updated properly. The index (left) pane is not.
If you "right-click new-window" on 2, then you get both panes correctly displaying page 2. In that window when you click on 1 (or previous) the map goes to 1 properly, but the index stays on page 2.
So the code segment that updates the map pane is executed but the code that updates the index pane is omitted.
Note for people struggling with this: the drop-down list (under "Satellite" or "Map") at the upper right of the window does let you switch from page to page for both the map and index.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||weductape||11/3/11 8:55 AM|
Peter we get it. The left panel update is non functional.
I have used the drop down but with 15 pages and 3000 markers I found it much easier to open 15 tabs, have them in front of me in order, and edit the map that way as when I am in the mode the changes are all over the map so to speak.
Thomás' and my major concern is our viewers, who are oblivious to this site and the work-arounds. My map has had about 130,000 hits and these people want to hit the page number, find their information, and run. I hate to say it but asking most of my viewers to do much more than click on the numbers is technologically above their station.
I guess in the final analysis, its free, and its easier than using DOS on a 296. Yes there are still a few of us out here.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||trackofalljades||11/3/11 9:09 AM|
What frustrates me is knowing how simple a fix this is (come on, every time you save the map, you get the order of all the items in the list and you save them properly indexed, this is not challenging scripting). The only explanation can be that Google doesn't consider this a priority (my guess would be because only a small percentage of users care about it).
Workarounds are useless, because as pointed out above this isn't just about the maintainers of maps...it's about the users. When they updated the UI to maps, Google broke their usability in a fundamental way and it's still not fixed. There will never be a workaround that's "good enough" and this question/issue is NOT answered. Do we all need to go start new "unanswered" threads to get them seen? Do engineers ever pick up tickets from "answered" threads or is this one just a useless echo chamber now?
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||peter8dg||11/3/11 9:10 AM|
Opus - I agree on all counts.
[ doesn't this forum have a "reply to writer only"
or am I just not finding it?
as for: I'm afraid the "My Maps"/"My places" feature
may be just some lone Google employee's spare time hobby :-]
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||weductape||11/4/11 12:15 AM|
I tend to agree with your Hobby statement. Replying to an individual here requires that you click on the persons name and if they have created a profile and allowed direct contact then you can message or email them. Unfortunately most people here have not created a profile and that includes all of the google employees that answer these map issues.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||11/4/11 4:56 AM|
Unfortunately, I am afraid there is something more ominous than "hobby" going on.
I noted yesterday someone posting a list of minor glitches with the map and immediately a "google employee" posted an answer that they moved the list upward.
Our problem is a lot more serious (completely broken maps from a user point of view) but no word from any of the nice folks that loiter here to hold our hand.
Given that Google already began charging for APIs, I think they are looking for ways to either charge for "my maps" or to limit the use so folks would be channeled to more "paid services".
I hope I am wrong but all this quiet about this issue is deafening.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Blvd||11/6/11 6:04 AM|
Sadly, the open link in new tab doesn't work for me in FireFox or Safari in Mac OSX; I do get the next page of the map, but not "edit"button at the top left, just the "Save to My ($&*^$&@) Places" link.
So they're charging for APIs now - if they want to start charging for "My Maps" I would hope they'd, you know, make sure it WORKS before asking us all to swallow that.
"Oh, it's a free service, you get what you pay for, yadda yadda" sorry that's a bit disingenuous these days given Google's size and programming staff and position in the technology world. Please either 1) support Maps and stop breaking it every other month, or 2) give Maps short shrift while whipping out things like Buzz and Google+ and just be up front about what users can expect in the way of support and product reliability...
Beyond frustrated right now.
|Re: Multi-page placemark list. Can't move to the other pages beyond page one||Thomás||11/6/11 6:21 AM|
Blvd, I feel your pain. Fortunately, Google doesn't charge for MyMaps. My post was just expressing my own foreboding, given how Google and most other companies are trying their hardest to hook users with "free" services, only to come back and impose a monthly subscription once they know user's are hooked. I hope it doesn't happen. As for the "it's free and you get what you pay for", it's an unfortunate slip of the tongue by a forum coordinator who in a moment of weakness (lack of helpful arguments) found the cliche an easy answer.
But back to the problem at hand, did you try the other technique I posted earlier on? It involves the "drop down" menu on the top right of the map:
Every time you click on a new page, the following happens:
1 - The map on the right refreshes to display the contents of the new page
2 - The list on the left stays on the old page
3 - The drop down list (top right of myMaps) lists two or three extra "layers". One of them is "checked" and it's the wrong one.
You can open that menu, close each "layer" in turn (with the little "x" next to it"). Or you can simply "check" the top map from this list and ignore the others.
When the top "layer" is checked, then you get to the right list.
I hope this helps.

I'm not alone!!! I was marking a ton of buildings and routes related to mass transit in my city and everything was going great until one day it seems like half my work was gone. Then I notice there's multiple pages in my navigation tab??? I click to go to the next page and now everything I could previously see vanished, and only a few new things popped up. Then I went back to page one and almost nothing was there. My Maps is suddenly seriously bugged!!
Is there no "show all" button or way to see my entire project at once??
