Hi all,

We've got news! Google+ just launched it's newest feature - Communities. Communities enable people, organizations, and brands to talk about the stuff that they care about with people who share their interests. You can see the blog post here and Getting Started guide here. Let me know if you have any questions!

Best,
Sky

PS If you aren't seeing Communities yet, don't fear - it's rolling out gradually

Is it normal for duplicate communities to be able to be made? And if so, how will this effect searching for communities? For exp. if I made a new (the first) community of say "PC Users" and then someone comes behind me say 10 min or 10 days later and make one with that exact name? I tested this and it did make a new one with the exact name.

Hello!  Congratulations G+.  I am so glad that you decided to create this feature.

1.  I would like to know where I can find the 'permalink' for my community?
2.   Are there any restrictions on the number of members we can invite to a private community?

Will we eventually be able to more granularly customize our communities look and feel?

As you probably saw, the search will display all matches. I think Google did this intentionally. With thousands if not millions of communities, you can't expect each one to have  a unique name. So it becomes important for the description to be clear enough so that users can figure out which one they want to join.

Functionality Suggestions for the Communities feature:

  1. Separate the Name of the community from the Logo.  IOWs if the logo clearly depicts the name of the community then allow for optional overlay of the community name.  e.g., please see +Cyber Security Network™.
  2. Make it so that upon uploading/choosing the community logo it fits to frame nicely and elegantly without degradation.
  3. Even if the community is private, when someone searches for the community the description of the community should be optionally displayed.
  4. Do not allow exact duplicate names for the communities.
Thank you Google.
Again, Great move!

Hi techanalyst:

1. The URL of the Community is the permalink. There are separate links for each of the discussion topics, too.

2. You can only invite less than 200 at one go, but sometimes it's even lower than that. But you can share the Community in Public or to your circles by clicking the Actions menu under the Community profile pic, but you can also share via the permalink.

However, be careful not to spam. :-)

Good Evening Sky

I am loving Google Communities! In the setup phase now but looking forward to using the features, ie hangouts. I have a few questions, if you wouldn't mind assisting.

1. Is it possible to add documents to circles, ie I would like to draw up a member list and then allow members to write a little blurp about themselves as well as sharing their website links and contact info.

2. How do you tag a community in a post. My community is named G+ Sweets and I find as soon as I start typing other communities appear by my community doesn't and I'm wondering if the "+" is causing issues? I really don't want to change the name because the community almost has 500 members.

3. I tried to create a hash tag for the the community #g+sweets but it wouldn't work I had to use #gsweets instead (I'm assuming you can't use the "+" sign and I'm wondering if this is the reason the community is not coming up when I'm trying to tag)?

Thank you so much for your assistance Sky, have a nice evening.

Grace

Dear Sky,

please is it possible to change privacy settings of my community - just switching between visible and unvisible in searches. My community is now private and unlisted/invisible but I found even if someone has the right url, he can't ask for join, that button is missing.

Thank you or anybody for your help.
Cheers, Vaclav.

Can Communities be business related?
I would like to create a community for the members who are signed up to my online business directory but cannot find any information in the FAQ or Tos about this. Are there any advanced guidelines anwhere for Google+ Communities?
Re: Launching now: Communities JaanaNystrom 1/12/13 3:19 AM
Of course you can create a community for your business, it's a great way to keep in touch with your clients.

I recommend that you create a community from your business page, thus making it more easy to find.
There can be several owners to one community; Your Pgae, your profile, your business partner etc.

Here are some helpful articles:

In the end it all depends on you and your business how you wish to use the community: Private or public.

More about the communities from Google:

What kind of advice or how-to are you looking for, you mentioned "advanced"?

Cheers, Jaana

Thanks for the reply,
do you have a source for that?

"What kind of advice or how-to are you looking for, you mentioned "advanced"?"

I would like to see an official TOS and Gudelines before I start up a business community, I don't want to go to the trouble of setting up a community to only find later that I am breaking some guidelines or the TOS.

The FAQ  and the link you provided are just too vague at the moment.

I'm a member of two communities (well 5 or so, but two are an issue), where I can't put them in a circle or + link them... am I missing a setting somewhere? I have the Communities box checked on the settings page, but these two I see very little feed of on my home page. One is a private community for the local Ingress Resistance so I can see perhaps it not showing up, but the other is a public board game community (https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/111229977945579240171). I've seen one post from that boardgame group show up in my feed, where the main Ingress community was flooding my home page so much I ended up turning the circle that is in down to no posts... and that is an example of a community that I was able to add to a circle... I can't seem to find any settings on my end. Does the community mods have to set the community up in a way that allows it to be added to a circle or not? Or as I said before, am I missing something?
