Hi, is there a limit to how long I can broadcast a Hangout? I'm considering an event that may be one to two hours.

Thanks!
Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! ebrumph 8/29/12 8:43 AM
@jszmajda  - The limit is 4 hours provided you've verified your youtube account via SMS.

Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! Marcello Mari 11/2/12 9:12 AM
Hello, great resource. But what does "You can’t invite extended circles or the public to join broadcasted Hangouts" means? I thought the whole idea of Hangout on air was to have anyone to join your hangouts....

Can you please clarify?
Thanks
Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! Dori, Google Community Manager 11/2/12 10:03 AM
@Marcello,

You cannot invite extended circles or the public to join your hangout - you have to invite a specific circle or specific people who are in your circles to an HOA. When you broadcast your HOA, however, you will be broadcasting publicly - so anyone can view it.

Hope that helps clarify!
Dori
Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! thehow2girl 11/3/12 5:06 AM
Is there anyway to do an on-air hangout and invite more than 9 people and once the hangout is full with 9 live on-air others can still view the hangout?  At the moment it seems once it is full that is it and anyone else can only wait until someone drops out.

I am thinking the best way is to do a public on-air hangout and then if someone wants to join in live invite them when they are ready to come on-air and then when they leave the hangout you can invite someone else to join live - that way everyone can still view until you can let them come on-air

Its a bit cumbersome though and would be great if you could invite multiple circles/people to a live broadcast and all of those you invite are still able to view the hangout until you ask them to come on-air - but other people viewing dont get to join live at any stage because they are not invited to the on-air broadcast individually  (if that makes sense?)

Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! jefferoo 11/12/12 2:02 PM
I'm sorry, but this new way of using video chat is very frustrating.
I do not like this as much as the old video chat.
I normally only speak with one person at a time, and having two screens with the same face is very distracting.
There should be an option to remove the preview screens on the bottom or to use the old video chat format. I feel like there is also a lot of wasted space.
In the settings for Hangout, there are really no settings. If you are going to improve the video chat feature, make it user friendly and give the user the ability to customize their own experience.
When I was looking to send feedback, it was very complicated to report my issue because I looked to send feedback and it asked me to pick my issue for what was listed, and when I didn't see my issue, there was another link on the side for Hangout.

Also, a pdf with instructions on how to use Hangouts???
Seriously?
And I have to investigate it on a group forum to find that, in the first place???

This is a clue that it is not ready for consumption.

Thanx for the good summary! Very useful for getting started.

Is there a document with instructions for more advanced features (e.g., switching the camera view to a different person, the maximum length of a broadcast, etc.)?

Thanx.

Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! Bill Weller 3/9/13 7:50 AM
Dori, Thank you for the link.  I've already read this, and the connected links, plus the short guide posted in another link. The link you provided is a good intro to the features. I'm still looking for more information on advanced features (e.g., switching the camera view to a different person, the maximum length of a broadcast, etc.)?

I'm particularly interested in learning how to create schedule a HOA Broadcast so an invitation can be sent out that is used to access the HOA Broadcast once it starts.

Any suggestions where I can find this additional information?

Thanx!

Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! thehow2girl 3/9/13 3:25 PM
@Bill - there are lots of ways to do what you are looking to do - one is to use Google events to setup your "on-air" event and then you have a link to share with people and you can easily add your YT code into the event on the day so that everyone can view your HOA on that page, click through to YT to watch and also make sure that you add the YT link to the description for people to click on direct as currently people on a mobile cant view on the event and need the YT link to watch your HOA
Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! Corey Snow 3/14/13 12:33 PM
@dori

How do we send out a message that is public and has the link to the HOA?

I'm not concerned about letting people participate, as I am more concerned about letting people view the demo.

If I want to invite my customer base, how do I do so? The native invite system is clunky and confusing, and doesn't seem to work.

When I try to invite people using the native "Invite More People" button, I get an error message. Why?

Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! thehow2girl 3/14/13 1:25 PM
You might be getting an error message because you are trying to invite too many people at one time @Cory......

Another way to invite your user base is to simply send out a share (if your base is on G+) with a link back to the event - share the event on your stream or send out an email invite if your user base is on email :)

Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! Bill Weller 4/2/13 9:18 PM
Thank you for the lead on how to do this, however, as a novice at using Google events, HOA & broadcasts, I'm not familiar with how I create a YouTube code.  I've only seen the instructions for starting a broadcast and adding the HTML code to a web site (which is not an option as there is no web site associated with the event).  I have three clarification questions:
1) How do I create a YouTube code? Is this the same as starting a Broadcast and copying the code for posting on a web site?
2) Does this mean I start YouTube recording 20-30 min in advance of the event just to create a YouTube code that I can go back to Google+ and add the link to the event?
3) When you say "make sure that you add the YT link to the description", does this mean I paste the YouTube link in to the event 'Title' or in the "Details' field? I see no field labeled 'description' when I try to create a Google+ event.

Thank you

Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! thehow2girl 4/3/13 12:14 PM
Hey Bill - to answer your questions:

1) When you setup a live hangout on air and you are in the hangout room (before you click the start broadcast button) you will see a little link that says embed (top of the screen) click that and you will see both the embed code and also the YouTube link
2) yes you will need to start your hangout room before you are ready to broadcast so that you can copy that YouTube link and paste it/send it to people that want to join you live on YouTube
3)When you create an event you can add the Youtube link into the youtube field in the advanced options so that the HOA auto plays on the event page and then you can add the youtube link in the description as a clickable link and also in the comments for people who are on mobiles to click through

Re: Hangouts On Air Technical Guide! Bill Weller 4/13/13 6:14 PM
When setting up a Hangout on Air Broadcast, how long do I have from the time I open the HOA window, in which is displayed the embed link for viewing the Broadcast via YouTube, until the YouTube link expires if I don't start the Broadcast right away?

Today I started a Hangout, enabled to be Broadcasted, and then I pasted the YouTube link from the 'Embed' feature in to an Event on my Google+ page.  Then I waited about 1.1 hours from the time I opened the Hangout window which created the embed links, until I actually started the Broadcast. After I started the broadcast, I went to a different computer and accessed my Google+ page and clicked on the YouTube link I copied from the Hangout and the browser window which opened displayed the error message that the Session Expired. I tried using the link in Firefox, Safari & Chrome with the same result.

I could not monitor the Broadcast via the YouTube page. Any ideas how I can see what the Hang Out Broadcast viewers see on YouTube?

Thanx,

Bill

An open invite for anyone in unschooling or just interested in our creed of education innovation. Unschooling is a contuinual work in progress as are all things! We are much more than the conventional homeschoolers &then some. Over a sshort period of time thhe narrative of the humble intent of unschooling wil be better understood. Make no mistake on the fact that unschooling is a very respectable means of parent &children bonding. No matter how the time is spent always learning is a simple precept of unschooling this also how even the simplicity of dreams while resting are an essential aspect that coeleses  to the waking of  our childs abilities. The whole Earth is a learning lab. Always a work in progress? The answer is an obvious yes! Many successful are among the ranks of the unschooled..too numerous to name drop on that one..just use your imagination! Curiousity is a key organic aspect to this open forum;meaning that there are no limits! Every time you watch a little T.V. you see university online extension learning. This is an obvious to the notion that unschooling is only being in a renaisance of the longest surviving way to learn. Inevitively the teacher is the student..that seems cliche'however, unschooled people are both parent and child. Children learn as soon as they are born our goal is to nuture that instinct. Do I know everythingon this? No one has all of the answers..that is the innocent beauty of it. Learning is inherent in all living creatures. A reverance for life(Albert Sweitzer)coupled with a do no harm merit is the opening of a Wisdom of the more esoteric.I am of avail to all that find that conventional means of school are not helpful to your gifted little ones.I am still in a lifetime  career declared professional student.
