I have two IMAP based connections, one Mac based (iMac with MacOS 10.6.8 and Mail.app) the other PC based (believe it or not, Netscape 7.2 running on Windows-XP). Both have run flawlessly for nearly two years. Both failed in the last twelve hours.

The ERROR is get on the PC reads "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: System error (Failure)."
On the Mac I show no connection, but get no specific ERROR message.

Two different IMAP connections, both failed, one common aspect... trying to connect to GMAIL IMAP Servers. Time to wake up the server and network techs.

Add me to the list.  This has been going on intermittently for me for weeks. I used to just boot my iphone 4s and it would resolve itself temporarily.  Now its happening every day.  I started a thread in the Apple forums and many people are affected. 

p.s. Enough with the CAPTCHA already!  That is not the problem.

Just had the same problem occur, as of about 12-13 hours ago. Re-entering account info and all doesn't do anything. Problem is also only on the native iOS app, and not through a browser or the actual Gmail app.

camsta64 - Scroll to the top right and you will see a mail icon.   Click on that and you can toggle it on and off.

I'm having the same issue.  Yesterday, I was unable to connect to my gmail account via IMAP using either my iPhone or my iPad.  Access to the web interface works from my PC and from both my iPhone and iPad without difficulty.

Things I've tried include:

* Deleting and recreating the account on my iPad
* Installing Thunderbird on my PC and trying from there
* Changing the account password
* Killing the mail app and trying again
* Killing all my apps and restarting my iPad

Nothing changes the symptoms.

I think you can do it this way...on the upper left you should see a couple of links under groups...click on my groups then you should see on the right side, next to your name etc. a link to manage membership...this will open up a box where you can choose your options.  Ok...but I'm not an expert on this stuff...so apologies if that doesn't work.

PS...a bunch of us are just trying to get this fixed and I think the only way it can be accomplished is to make enough noise that google gets wind of it and does something about it.  no way to communicate!

Hi everyone,

Yes, I work for Google and we're working on resolving the issue. It doesn't have to do with 2-step verification and it is only happening for certain accounts, so you may have 1 account that is fine while the other is receiving the error. If you're been experiencing issues prior to Tuesday night (Aug 7), it is mostly likely not related to the issue we're investigating.

As a workaround so you can check your mail on your phone or tablet, you can go to Gmail on the device browser or you can download the Gmail app. I'll let you know as soon as this is resolved.

If you have been experiencing error prior to Tuesday night, let me know and it may make sense for us to discuss your issue on a separate thread to not confuse this one.

Not sure if this will help Google, but my experience points to a Gmail issue:
- Wifes Gmail worked fine for months on both iPad 2 and iPhone using the built in mail app. Running OS 5.1.1
- Wifes Gmail stopped working yesterday 8/8/12 on both devices iPad and iPhone. She gets the error message about imap.gmail.com.
- My wifes Gmail is fine when accessed from the web
- My Gmail account on my iPad 3 and iPhone are fine. Both are OS 5.1.1
- I created an account for my Gmail on my wifes iPad and it worked fine.
- But, when I create an account for my wifes Gmail on my iPad and I got the same imap error.

If it matters, this is also affecting one of my google apps (free) accounts.  The folks over in the Google Apps Product Forum don't appear to know anything about this issue.

I've used G-mail for several years and never had any problems so it's frustrating to have this weird random problem from nowhere and then to not have a help line or e-mail help to find out what's going on.  Maybe I need to go back to my old Hotmail account?  At least with Microsoft they have decent support.

Although it has been a bit annoying the strange twist is that I've given the gmail app for ipad and iphone a fair shot. I may end up sticking with it.

I tried the app and don't like it because I can't see my e-mails full-screen.  I always have the list of e-mails on the left which makes the viewing panel on the right narrow on the right.  It's not the end of the world but one of the things I love on the iPad is viewing e-mails full screen.

I agree with you Andy. large pool of people got effected by this problem and Google Team is not giving any support. Same problem here -- I haven't been able to use the IOS mail client to access my GMail account since Tuesday night. I tried all the suggestions I could find, but none worked.

I just opened a new thread about this before finding this one. Weird that you all have been experiencing for several days. It just started for me last night but like you all I didn't change a thing and it was working just fine before the issue. PLUS I have two other Gmail accounts that are unaffected. Not sure what's up?

Out of the blue I have started receiving the "Cannont Get Mail" error on both my Mac Desktop in iMail and on my iPhone.  Error says, "The mail server 'imap.gmail.com' is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings."

Everything was working fine before this error showed up and I had made NO changes at all so I figured it must be some temporary issue that would resolve overnight. This morning the error persists. I tried a recommended fix of opening the Gmail mail client in my browser going into settings and ensuring IMAP was enabled. It was. So I disabled it and saved. Then I reenabled it and saved. Checked still getting error. So I deleted the account from my iphone. Re-added it. Still getting error. I've triple checked passwords and even removed and re-added the account a second time.

I saw something in here about trying to connect not on WIFI. I used my 3G connection instead and still having the issue.

I also checked the Labels page in my Gmail Settings and the correct "Show in Imap" boxes are checked.

I have two other Gmail accounts with different users and passwords that I have showing in iMail and on my iPhone. Both of those have been working just fine throughout. Not sure why I'm suddenly having this issue just with this account.

I'm out of ideas...

Getting errors connecting via IMAP (Thunderbird & iPhone) on one account since this morning, other account seems fine, website login works for both.

I'm hit by this too:

Mail.app on Mac OS X 10.8, getting "System error (Failure)" message.
Since this morning. Web interface and iPhone/iPad are OK.
Only the gmail-based custom domain address, the @gmail.com one is fine.

I am yet another person affected by this on both my mac (mail 5.2) and iphone. Most recently, I have also noticed that I cannot display the contents of emails received just prior to when the problem started in apple mail.

Sorry I am not sure where to post this.  I have been unable to send and receive gmail on Entourage on my Macbook since August 1st. It says  I tried revoking my 2 step password verification and resetting that password with no success. It says "authentication failed" "invalid credentials". I can received on my iphone, webmail, Macmail and ipad but not Entourage which I like as I also receive from my other email accounts.  What should I do??  Keep trying the 2 step by revoking and resetting??

I am having a problem with one of my gmail accounts.  I currently have 4 but I mainly use 2 of them.  What's happening with one of my accounts is that whenever I send an email through it, I get the reply email to my other gmail account that I never use.  I am assuming this has to do with the problem you are discussing?  But I can't figure out how to fix it if it's not the problem.  Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thanks

-I have two gmail accounts in Thunderbird, bug affects only one of them.
-I can sign on via web interface.

Set up TB on a clean machine (IMAP), and curiously:
-The password is accepted
-The "folder" listing (tags) _is_ fetched from gmail, while

-folder contents isn't fetched.

I'm also having the same problem.

I tried to set-up the two-step verification and now my iphone and ipad can't get mail. I can access fine on my computer and through the safari browser on those devices.

I've tried the following things to fix it:
-turning 2-step on and off
-changing my gmail password
-deleting my account and putting in back again
-captcha unlock
-turning off 2-step in safari on my devices.
-going to the apple store

When we tried to load my friend's gmail account on my phone, hers worked, but mine still doesn't.

If anyone finds something that works or if google sorts out the problem let me know!

I am one of those people who have two account on one phone and have one that works and one that doesn't.  The email account that is experiencing the issue was created in 2004  if that helps you guys out in any way....

I went through support for both, the Apple Mail is still broken, but if you recreate your account on the iPad but choose MS Exchange instead of GMAIL, it works.

One more trouble report, hope it is fixed soon.   My main google account started showing the same issues of failure on login 7:30 pm 8/9/12.   Tried closing all devices using gmail imap client, created a new account using Thunderbird.  Folders show up, bolded new message quantities show up next to the folder name, but no messages can be viewed, every folder is blank.

Tried lots of things as others have to no avail.

It would be good to have this trouble noted on your status page, which just shows everything is hunky dory.

I'm having the same issue. 5 gmail accounts, all configured identically as IMAP. All at once the one account I use the most often broke and am unable to access via iPhone/iPad without reconfiguring as an Exchange server. Apple Mail still cannot access the account. I've changed to strong passwords, captcha, 2-step verification, and nothing works. It appears to be something broken on the Google side where my account is incapable of using IMAP, even after disabling and re-enabling it on the gmail website.

I'm having the same issue but I'm also interested to see lots of people reporting the error 'the server imap.google.com isn't responding, please check your settings...' on their iphones. I have been having this problem several times a day since I got my iPhone 4 18 months ago and the only way to resolve it is to switch the phone off and on again. Yes, literally half a dozen times a day I have to switch my iPhone off to persuade it to download mail. I've tried every solution I've come across and nothing has worked, but I've consistently blamed Apple or my mobile service provider. Now I'm starting to think it's yet another Google problem...

Totally agree. I pay for a Google business package and there is literally no tech support. At one point today during the many hours I spent trying to resolve this while Google kept rejecting my password, it sent a password reminder to the account I couldn't access because...it wouldn't accept my password. Idiotic.

Same here. Using iphone 3Gs. Stopped working this AM. Called ATT, called Apple Care Support. No one can fix it. They all say it's a gmail problem. I have done all of the support steps, and nothing works.

Google has obviously turned into what it originally despised. Once nimble and quick to innovate, they have become slow to react, stodgy and non-responsive to complaints. The fact that you can't contact anybody at Google says it all.

I am having the same problem with my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I spent hours trying to resolve this yesterday and today. I tried every damn thing from deleting the email and setting up again, restarting my phone, manually setting up the email and now I'm contemplating bashing my phone with a hammer. Also, I hate the gmail app because it doesn't show the full email. The mobile version isn't any better either.

And PS: It's impossible to contact google!!

In case any new posters missed my post above, we're aware of the issue some users are experiencing with their IMAP connection. I realize most of you prefer your IMAP client, but while we're working on this, I encourage you to explore the alternatives mentioned so that you can continue to access your email on your desktop and mobile devices.

Just had the same problem. Went Apple store where they reset my mail to POP.gmail.com.... Solved the problem. However, it is happening with all my Apple devices. Imac wanted to download all the mail on the account back to 2009. What pain. Hope Google gets this resolve soon. I'd rather not deal with 3 years of old mail.

Thank you to everyone for posting and we are so sorry for this experience. As I mentioned before, we're aware of the issue. The fix has already occurred for some users, but it will hit everyone that was impacted within the next few days, likely into next week. Not all accounts are affected, so if you have multiple Gmail accounts, you may notice one works fine, while the other returns this error.

In the meantime, you can login to Gmail through your web browser (http://mail.google.com). On your phone or tablet, you can also use your device's browser or if you're on Android or iOS, you can download the Gmail application. I realize it's not the way most of you want to get to your mail, but it will still allow you to get to your mail on both your computer or mobile devices.

Thank you again for your patience as we work on resolving this. I will update this post once I know all users are fixed.

I can only access my gmails through safari.  This has been been the case for over 24 hours. When I try to access them through my gmail on my imac, my ipad and my iphone I still just receive "Mail was unable to open this mailbox on the server “imap.gmail.com”.

The server returned the error: System error (Failure)".

How long will this last?

Not sure if this is the same  problem, but GMAIL is experiencing severe issues with several threads raised on both Gmail and Google Apps. They relate to server authentication, unlock captcha, and connections being intermittently dropped for no reason.

 I have been contacted personally by Gmail and the only thing they were able to suggest is that this is WIndows' problem...

Its not good enough to say that the issue will be resolved into next week.  This is Google we are talking about for Christ's sake. Gmail is an intrinsic part of people's web experience and a downtime of a week is unheard of in today's fast-paced online environment.  If there is a major issue, please admit it and inform what it is instead of a generic and ambiguous reply like this which only serves to fuel more resentment, Im a paid customer with additional storage charges, not a free user after all.  Its a pain to keep going on the web to chek the mail everytime

Me too, 2 days already. And it is not the first time that happened. I cannot go into my mail account from PC neither.  Without Customer Service where somebody would be able to answer what is going on - I feel so helpless. This is ridiculous ! What should me do?

same prob here.  No iphone and no Ipad Gmail service.  Interestingly - my wife's works!  Oh - an my PC Outlook and IMAP ALSO NOT WORKING.  It looks like an account specific issue.
Is there any way of contacting Google to let them know directly - not sure anyone reads the forum from the people that might be able to fix this.

Is it pride, embarrassment, fear of Wall St. I mean really, gmail goes down across three of my devices. I check around the web and the number of people posting identical problems is growing exponentially. For 3 days now, a complete blackout coming from gOOgle.

Now finally, acknowledgement, in the form of an obscure post in this forum.

SonaD, maybe a email blast to those affected or a very least a note on mail.google that says we are having a problem. But no, you leave it to your subscribers to try in vain for hours and hours to troubleshoot a problem that we can't fix.

I think that as gOoGlE rolls out a fix "likely into next week" I will begin to migrate to a new service. I finally have a reason to do what I have wanted to do for sometime now.

I realize this is frustrating, but we are aware of the issue and we are working to resolve for the accounts affected.

For users that may have joined this thread after my posts (they are at the top), you can still check your mail through your computer's web browser. If you're having trouble on your mobile device or table, you also use the device's browser or for iOS and Android, download the Gmail application.

I know this isn't your first choice, but it will allow you to continue accessing your messages in the meantime.

One more note since I saw a few posts asking. 

If you are getting the error that imap.gmail.com is not responding, you don't need to go to the store where you bought your device or contact your carrier. The issue is with your Gmail account and we're working on it. Again, I encourage you to use the alternatives we've mentioned so you can check your messages.

SonaD this problem occurs inconsistently for the SAME account on different email clients.  I have Thunderbird 14 and Outlook 3 running on the same laptop and the failure started 2 days ago for T-Bird, but Outlook is still receiving emails. Outlook is connected via POP so it appears the problem is with IMAP. My Tablet and Android (Motorola Bionic) stopped receiving emails yesterday (8/8/12) also uses IMAP.  One workaround for folks might be to use POP instead of IMAP.

This IMAP problem is widespread (but not affecting everyone).  Google posted this message on 8/9:

If your account is affected it will be that way on all devices and you will have to use a web browser to access your email.  If you have multiple accounts some might work and some might not - there is no real pattern we can see.

Be careful when switching from POP from IMAP.  POP by default downloads your messages to one device and will immediately or eventually (sometime 30 days later depending on your configuration) delete the message from the server and all of the messages you have read, filed, and created will need to manually be uploaded to the original server based IMAP folders to again be accessible. .  

Going from POP to IMAP is safe but you need to know what you are doing to go from IMAP to POP - it's not a good short term solution.

I'd strongly suggest you use a web browser to access your email until this problem is resolved.  I am sure it's important and visible to Google - they will get get taken care fo a quick as possible.

here is a workaround that WORKS!  set up an Exchange account, use m.google.com as the server; user name = your gmail account (abc...@gmail.com) -- leave Domain blank ... works on my iPad and iPhone 4S (too bad someone from Google couldn't have suggested this work around 35 hours ago ...

Does the Exchange approach leave the server files updated as if we accessed via IMAP?  i.e. when IMAP starts working again can we just pick up were we left off or will we need to juggle things to get it working in IMAP again?

I remember Exchange historically having an option to store messages locally (like POP) as opposed to on the server (like IMAP).  Does Apple Mail, when connected to an Exchange server store locally?  I'd hate to download all of my emails and not have them back up the server when IMAP starts working again.

Three days already. All I can say is Google can count itself lucky that Microsoft is obtuse enough not to allow IMAP connections to its new outlook.com service. I would have otherwise jumped ship already.

I am so glad I found this post. I have been experiencing this issue and it is incredibly frustrating! I went to the Genius bar at apple this morning to try and resolve the issue to no avail and now I know why...

Once the issue is resolved on your end will we automatically be able to access our gmail account again or will there be additional steps needed to be taken by each user affected?

I've had my google-apps email set up as an Exchange account on my iPad and my iPhone set up to hit the same account via imap (manually, not using the [gmail] auto-setup in the add new account screen) for several years and it hasn't been a problem.  Do note that the exchange style account doesn't seem to fetch all my calendars, while the imap style account does.  If you sync multiple gcal calendars to your iOs device, you may want to leave your existing imap account set up and just turn off the mail-checking, for now, to avoid the error popups.

I get the sense that the people posting "me too" aren't reading the whole thread, but this does seem to be a valid workaround for anyone who's having the "server imap.gmail.com is not responding" issue and doesn't want to use the gmail iOs app or safari to check mail.  Setting up as an exchange account might work in Mac Mail, too, though I've never tried using that to hit an exchange server.

This workaround will not make Larry Page, Sergey Brin, their mothers, and the arbiters of all that is fair and good on the internets aware of your frustration or the low opinion you now hold of google's free service.  But, then, neither will posting in this forum.

I have the exact same issue Erie Pa.  Went to Verizon trid to change a million settings nothing worked.  They had me delete the Gmail and sign in through microsoft exchange however all of my folders are missing.  Ipad and iphone.  Pc laptop still receiving all emails. great I can carry my laptop everywhere.

Surfannie - you can use the Safari browser on your iPhone to access your account via the web.  Your folders will be intact when the IMAP problem is resolved and you are able to again access via the Mail App on the iPhone.

How are you accessing the email on the PC - via a web browser or a standalone email app (Outlook, etc.).  We'd be curious to know if it is via a standalone app.

scottp83 - it's a Google server thing affecting _some_ IMAP accounts.  No need to do anything on the iPhone, iPad or with Mountain Lion.  Use your browser (Safari) to access your email in the short term on all three device types.

SonaD - I, too, have been having trouble. For the past two days (since Wednesday night) I've been unable to access IMAP email using the Apple apps on my devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac Powerbook).

I've been getting by with Gmail on the web, but this is not ideal for my work needs.

Hi all, I found that despite what has been said it IS the 2 step verification that screws up the iphone and the captch unlock and password stuff doesn't work. I finally turned off the 2 step verification then set up my iPhone 3G mail as a microsoft exchange account rather than the gmail option they give in mail setup choices. After the I recreated the account, the reactivated the 2 step verif, then all the one time password stuff worked. BTW, gmail apps only work on the newer iphones. I like the added security but I suggest that Google test further before implementation next time. I am willing to bet this won't work for everyone but maybe it will help a few. BTW, if you don't see your past emails, go to the mail settings and set "no limit" to the "mail days to sync".

The worst part Sona is that there is no one to talk to.  Google, being such a large company should be able to have people to talk with about problems.  I have phone many numbers at Google but either its the wrong department, India, or someone will be with me shortly (and i've been holding for an hour!)
Please post something on Google's homepage to alert everyone that the problem is from Google not from our phones or tablets.  I'm sure someone can come up with a great idea as you have for so many other situations.  Olympics are great!

there is something changed for me, but not in a good way!
I cannot sign in gmail trough the webpage. Chrome downloads a file "download" of 0 bytes when signing in and that's it.

On the android the app still works.

I get a new error when trying to log in trough IMAP: "login to imap.googlemail.com failed". So this is worse as it was before!

thebigdawg65 - Most of us do not have 2-step turned on.  I've run across the captcha thing a few times before - logging onto the account via a browser generally clears that.  Using the special captcha clear process was of no value this time, either for us.

I suspect your "working now" is a result of the Exchange style config you made - that has been reported to work with the Mail App on the iPhone/iPad.

Personally, I am hopeful the IMAP thing is resolved soon and don't want to use Exchange as a short term solution but if the weekend rolls by with no solution I might have to cave.

I have had this problem since 8/7.  Gmail worked through Safari web browser, but not on other clients or devices.  Could not receive mail through MAIL app on MAC, on iPhone or on iPad.  Errors with imap.  I searched the net for days and attempted all the suggestions to fix including deleting the mail accounts, rebooting, tricks to unlock something called captcha, but nothing worked.  On 8/10 at 6:35pm (eastern) it just started working on it's own!  It was very frustrating to be without 'mobile' mail for several days with no explanation or no means to contact Google.  Just glad it's back.  Be patient.  If it's not working for you now, it probably will soon.  For iPhone and iPad users, downloading the free GMAIL app from the app store will work in the interim.

Hello everyone!!  I am have the same issue , however, I have an iphone 4s.  What's weird is that I have two other gmail accounts in which I am able to send and receive mail without any issues.  For some reason I am unable to successful connect my 3rd gmail account.  I've reset my phone, deleted all of my email accounts and I am still have no luck. For me, messages are only starting to propagate.  First I could only see the filtered messages from this forum, then my Inbox.  None of my other 20 or so folders show mail.   Seems like more newly created  Maybe they are having retrieve from backups after they deal with the queued messages?

I'll give it overnight.  This incident is one reason I remained with pop for so many years.  I'm rethinking my current strategy.

I beileve it is time that (a) Google posts a proper public announcement about the problem and (b) posts a proper ETA when it is likely to be solved.

First, it took me hours of troubleshooting my Mail.app and iOS mail before I realized that this was Google's issue and not mine. An announcement would have saved so much effort, and I bet all other users in this discussion thread have wasted many hours in frustration.

Second, a redirect to "use the web interface (and stop whining)" isn't a solution - it is stating the obvious. Yes, we all know that, and we are already doing that.

Lastly, when it comes to an estimate, "over the next few days" is a very vague answer.

It has been THREE days now. It is HIGH time that this issue is properly addressed and not swept under the carpet and worked on behind the scenes.

We know the obvious Sona. We know that we can use web mail and we know that there's a Gmail app. We are not concerned about the alternatives. What worries us is that it has been more than THREE days and there's no clear response nor a clear timeline.

I have my email hosted with Google apps through a custom domain name. However we have some users who don't have any problems even on the same domain, and others like me are suffering for three days running.

It is high time that Google came back with a proper response, don't you think?

YAYYYYYY!!!!  I'm back!! Noticed it about 2 hours ago...So happy to be able to actually read emails again on my phone!!  As a practical matter...it might not be such a bad idea if google/gmail lost the wierd "conversation" approach...so unwieldy and confusing.  And the gmail app is equally as confusing...everything is repeated over and over again.  anyway...as info.

PS...thank you for all your help.  And...one other question...what is the process in order to report issues like this?  it seemed very haphazard with no clear process to reach anyone.  Lots of hours lost/wasted trying to fix something no one could fix...I personally wasted about 2 hours of Apple's time for example not to mention 3-4 hours of my own time.  Google could really do a better job of this.  Who do we even write to or address stuff to??

I actually went to the apple store today because when anything goes wrong with any of my apple products.. i blame them. it's usually their fault. i guess theres something wrong with google, though, and for the meantime i'm using exchange.

I am still experiencing this issue as well. Both my co-workers using the same custom domain name aren't experiencing the problem.

I also should mention that using Google's web interface is the absolute worst!

@wdurham - What people are saying is that their is no TIMEFRAME in the updates you've mentioned (which we've all seen). These updates are very vague and seem to indicate that Google has no idea how to fix this yet.

I can confirm that I am having this issue as well. I just woke up one day to see that my primary Gmail account has stopped working on my iPhone 4S 16GB.

I've done the preliminary methods to try and get it working, howver it seems to be an isolated issue with only my main e-mail account.

It is as SonaD mentions; it works for some accounts, but not others. My secondary Gmail account connects fine.

---- If it is any helpful, my main Gmail account has the 2-step verification enabled. My secondary Gmail account does not, and never has had it enabled. This might be a good tip for any devs to check into, since it may be directly related.

Adding the Gmail account to your iPhone will work fine and login, however, you cannot access Gmail's IMAP.

I tried disabling 2-step verification to see if this would rectify the issue, however, to no avail.

The problem has been fixed.  The fix is being rolled out. Read other threads in the Forum and you will find that It is already in place for many people, whose accounts are now behaving properly again. 

But not everyone who uses Gmail is affected - for example, I personally use IMAP for two different email clients and a backup program, and have had no issues at all. 

Therefore the fix is selective. And that takes time to roll out, as it's not a blanket operation for all users.  The latest estimate from a Google Employee (Dave Ma) on one of the many other threads is that all affected users should be fixed by next week. 

In the meantime, use a web browser or - on a phone - the GMail App to access your mail.

So isn't this the same statement that is being repeated over and over again since the past FOUR days? I am amazed that it takes a whole week to roll out a server side problem fix. This issue has indeed been very poorly handled. Many questions are yet unanswered even though you say the problem has been fixed.

A. How many percentage of affected users are still pending? I, for one, am clearly one of those for whom the so called fix hasn't been "rolled" out yet.
B. Are we going to suffer any data loss?
C. Do we need to change our passwords?
D. Has there been a breach?
E. What is the ETA for this fix to be rolled out to 100% of the affected users?

So while you keep repeating the statement "check email with your browser or the gmail app" let me keep repeating the obvious answer "yes Sherlock, we are continuing to do that, and that is not the point here". Obviously the next statement from google is going to be "thank you for your continued patience."

And you are welcome for continuing to try our patience.

@saumil31337: I think you're being a bit too harsh on Google. You should realize that it does take time to diagnose the issue and to implement a surefire fix. Just blandly shouting a complaint won't get you anywhere.

Plus, it will take even longer than a week or two if the fix isn't exactly immediate, and needs to process hundreds of thousands of Gmail accounts that have been affected. Sure, Google may have some awesome supercomputers, but it doesn't mean that they'll get everything done in a minute or two.

And chances are, your account hasn't been compromised.

No accounts have been compromised - they have just been unable to use IMAP to access GMail.

Gmail web access and GMail App access for phones and devices has been completely unaffected. 

So there has been no data loss, no breach, no need to change passwords, just a temporary change required to access via the web instead of via the preferred email client. 

The latest estimate from Dave Ma, a Google employee,on one of the many different threads on this subject, was that the fix was in and was rolling out to those accounts which had been affected, and should have reached everyone that has experienced this issue by next week. Many users on other threads are already reporting that they are fixed.

My complaint isn't about the delay. It is about the total lack of info and official updates from google. Keeping users guessing isnt the best way to handle a situation like this don't you agree? Don't you hate waiting on the tarmac for two hours after your flight has landed without knowing what is causing the hold up?

i also found the same issue.. when i try to access my gmail account on iphone i get the following message.. i feel that i mistype my email or pass but then i realize that something wrong.. i search over the internet and found a solution.. now mny gmail is working properly...

This does not work for "Email programs including Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird" and only works once you have set up two-step authentication. So therefore does not address the issue of IMAP from Email programs, which is what pretty much everybody here is having a problem with.

I have been having this problem, too, where one gmail account works but the other does not. Worst of all, since this morning, the second account will not work either! Using Thunderbird 14.0 on a Mac.

Hey everybody! Here's a solution. I pointed all my email forwards from my GMail account to my iCloud account, set my phone and Apple Mail software to pick up my mail at iCloud and now it doesn't matter to me how long GMail takes to fix this.

However, it is going to take a while to forward all my stuff from four days of email trapped in my GMail account to my iCloud account to get my productivity back but that's a small price to pay to know I can pick up my email on Monday morning. Honestly, this was an amazing drain on productivity to be trapped in my browser for 4 days unable to easily access weeks of client reference files within my email program.

its nearly been a week, and this still hasn't been resolved.
Tbh it is bloody disgusting!!

I need access to my email 24/7, that is why i have an iPhone and use Gmail, as i thought it was reliable.

if i cant use it soon, i'll have to change email providers and get my emails forwarded to a different WORKING account!!

Also, I have problem with my notes (I'm iPhone user).
When I first encountered the problem, i thought something wrong with my account. So, I deleted and recreated my gmail account in my mobile. As result, I lost some of my "notes" entries. I checked and found the notes are available in my gmail (logging in via web browser), but how do I get them back to my phone?

It's now Monday morning.  I haven't had service since Wednesday.  It really caused a lot of problems for a few days.  I spent several hours troubleshooting on Thursday night.  Missed all emails relevant to a current project for a day and a half while I was away from my desk.  When I got back I deleted my account on Outlook.  What a serious pain.  This might be the biggest email/ISP problem I've had in fifteen years (i.e. forever).  I vaguely remember an Earthlink peer I used for a few months having some serious server issues.  That lasted a few days, I think.  Twelve years ago.  I've switched all my family devices and computers (except mine) to Apple for their customer service.  Email is next.

My email is still not syncing on my pc or laptop. I have tried using outlook, windows live and thunderbird with the same result ie no incoming emails downloaded. Gmail is working on my android phone. This has been the case now since last Thursday (5 days).

Mine still not working since last Thursday using google apps. Is there a SLA for the paid google apps, or are those on the paid having the same issues too??? Should be common daily updates on this to inform users of whats going on, and an ETA of the fix, even if it changes still should be an ETA out there.

It is a pity that no high profile blogger or columnist seems to have been affected by this situation. Google's poor handling of this situation and users left hanging without clear answers would have been pilloried in online media. Then that would have atleast forced a proper answer from gmail!

Hi all,

As Doree mentioned above, we're rolling out the fix to all accounts that were impacted over the next few days. The issue only affects your ability to use IMAP, so there are alternatives to get to your messages and use your account.

You can use the web browser on your computer or mobile device. iOS and Android users can also download the Gmail application.

For those that have been on this thread and have heard me repeat this, I apologize since you've heard it many times, but I'm doing so since new people are joining and they may not have seen our official Known Issues page or the sticky post at the top of this forum or the Best Answer on this thread (which I realized only appears on the first page) which discusses these work arounds.

I have seen a few people here suggest autoforwarding your mail to another account. This is also a great suggestion if you have another account you can still use via IMAP and prefer to use that as your interface. You can setup autoforwarding through the web browser and then turn it off once we post that the fix is completely rolled out.

While this update is much appreciated, it comes very late and frankly, it is quite irresponsible in the circumstances not to update more often. Obviously no one on your end knows that there is also a message from Google in the area you suggest to look (the problems page) that indicates system work will be done May 26th! Shouldn't that area be monitored so that we have confidence that the updates posted there are in real time? Obviously you guys have a problem and I do think that people might be more patient if you were honest about the end time, the process for "rolling out the fix", etc. Sorry to sound ungrateful at this point, but it has gone on long enough and there are enough frustrated folks out here that I think we deserve better, and more often, updates than are being provided in this thread. Sorry but this is unacceptable - it has passed six days by now.
Workaround is maybe good for someone, but not for everyone. I use webmail on desktop computer and Exchange ActiveSync on mobile and it does not affect me a little bit, I honestly don't know if IMAP works on my account.

But account that has problems is directors account to whose business we're giving IT support. Every IT change no matter how tiny is a pain for him, and this is a huge one since he's been working his all life from Outlook and few years back from iOS mail client. Till now he has newer seen webmail, labels etc.!

Very interesting, brings some light on why gmail is that unefficient dealing with this issue. Personally I did what the article says changing to Exchange (instead of IMAP) and it works perfectly.

thanks for this. it's great on the iPhone, but how do you add it to apple mail? to add a new account, the first screen asks for your user name and password and there seems to be no way to indicate you want an exchange account.

What I find strange is that it does not affect my sent mail folder. My sent messages folder updates gmail when I send a message from outlook.  I use outlook and a third party outgoing mail server to send.

Nope, have been out since Wed. eve, still NOT able to receive IMAP mail. EXCEPT I AM able to received filtered mail into a separate folder/label just from this forum, joined and created AFTER the problem started.  How ironic is that?

I am still not receiving mail to my Mac Mail client. I don't have an iPhone or an iPad, just Mail that I am needing to use again. The last email I received was Wednesday morning, Aug 8th, at 8AM Mountain Time. I have not been able to send since Friday. Webmail is incredibly cumbersome, and I'm losing time because of this mess. I'm incredibly frustrated as is everyone else, and there is no good response coming back from Google.

I will continue posting on this thread and on our sticky post when I have new updates to share. We are working to fix your accounts as soon as quickly as we can and I know some of you have been experiencing this for days and I can understand your frustration with this experience.

I updated the sticky post a few minutes ago with some additional information.

In order to fix your account, some users may be temporarily locked out of their account. This is necessary to fix the underlying IMAP connection issue, and we will work to restore your access as swiftly as possible.

Once you are back in your account, your IMAP connection will work again. You don't need to do anything.

As I write this, Apple Mail still cannot retrieve email stored on the Gmail server. I am autoforwarding my Gmail to another account and configured Apple Mail to retrieve my email from that account. A temporary fix, but not a solution. Still waiting Google ...

For a huge corporation with so many resources at hand, I  agree that I would have expected the fix to arrive sooner. A little disappointed.

Remember that it isn't necessarily the case that a big company will be quick to enact change. Indeed, it is often smaller companies that are the quickest to adapt to changing conditions. Generally, larger organizations have more strict control over their operations, which usually means there would be more procedural rules to be modified and it may turn out that changes have to go through several channels before being addressed/approved/performed. As far as customer service goes, there is often what seems to be a diffusion of onus when one outlet that faces customers has a large organization above it or superseding it, (like an individual grocery store that is one of many locations of a major chain, ["sorry… our head office says to do it this way…" etc.).

On a somewhat related note, my Google Apps IMAP has been down for about 6 full days now. Depending on the levels of impatience of people, you may want to look into alternative services if you use Google Apps. The best free one I've come across is Zoho.com, but it would probably take about an hour of work for me to switch over to their service, and I'm lazy and not at the point of maximum frustration yet, so I'll wait a bit more.

GMAIL / GOOGLE APPS BACK TO THE ORIGINAL ERROR:

Almost a week ago we reported a strange incident to these forums:

Email access for some people in our (google apps) organisation were every 5-10 minutes disconnected. Pop up window would turn up and say "The server rejected your login. Please verify your user name and passord are correct".

We'd click OK, and another window with the user name and password already typed in would turn up. We'd press ok, and access would be ok again.

Email clients in respect of the above are Windows Live Mail or Outlook.

Screenshots were posted on the forums, error codes were deciphered, Gmail recommendations were followed including unlock captcha, email checking to 10 minutes plus, and long server timeouts. Nothing worked. Absolutely nothing. I personally got an email from the Gmail Team recommending we change our email client! In other words, not our fault, it's Windows you should blame! Typical...

Anyway, a couple of days later, all hell broke loose. People were not only disconnected from their accounts, they could not even log in! A week later, Gmail came out of denial... Ok, we're trying to fix it.

Well, I am not sure if they fixed it but looks like we may be half way there... In our organisation anyway, we can now log in via IMAP, but we still have frequent disconnects as we have had a couple of weeks ago...

We honestly no longer expect any reliable response from Gmail, and the purpose of this note is to provide other users with an update of a problem and how it evolved over the last few weeks. Perhaps we're getting there...

I'm experiencing this problem using Chrome extensions in Google Apps Email that require IMAP - most notably Boomerang Mail and Boomerang Calendar.  The Streak Extension is also affected as well.

Scott you're right. But indeed google does need to provide a better response than just wait and watch.

It is time this story and its poor handling gets covered by online media. Anyone got email addresses for columnists? When they say that "the fix is working for a lot of users" clearly they have a proper idea about the solution. Why they are dragging their feet on this is crazy. Well especially since they refuse to provide any clear info and carry on like a broken record. Again I am not challenging the time it takes to fix things, my frustration stems from their pathetic responses. I mean nationwide power outages get fixed in a couple of days, these are flaming IMAP accounts!!

I am now on day seven of IMAP failing to connect.  It doesn't work in any email client with IMAP on an iMac or iPhone, not just Apple Mail.  Is there any prospect of whatever cam unhinged being fixed?

I have tried everything (I know ALL about capcha unlock friends) to no avail.

Loath as I am to unleash a renewed flood of "Me Too" messages, has anyone else had their IMAP access come back and disappear again?  My account started working again for the early part of the day yesterday, but quit again around 11 eastern.  

I'm no longer getting the error message in the title of this thread, but my iPhone seems to be timing out without fetching any headers when it checks my google apps IMAP account.  New messages are appearing in the version I have set up via exchange.

This is getting to the point of absurd. Yes, we can go around fixes and back door get our email. That isn't the point though is it? The fact is, my professional account can not be accessed by thunderbird. Sure, I can access via my android phone and through the web - wonderful. EXCEPT I shouldn't have to run around and back door anything. The reason we all use google is because it was supposedly the most secure and more dependable. These generic answers although appreciated are not focusing on the issue at hand. There is no factual information and nothing is changing. If the roll out would effect those hit first - then I could have been one of them. I am working on 7-9 days of this. Obviously, I am still dealing with this foolishness. What caused it and WHY should we be patient?

Oh and i will not forward my mail. There is a reason I use this account for my professional means - to forward and then reply - gives a different email address. One I prefer to keep for personal means. Enough of the talk arounds and the "we're working hard." Frankly, Google, we don't give a damn. Just fix it.

I am now on the fifth day of not being able to access my e-mails from my macbook, iphone, ipad. It is getting a bit tiring, and frankly I am not going to download the gmail app, forward my e-mails or anything similar. And since some users did get back their e-mail functionality, why didn't everyone get it? Isn't it supposed to be a common problem among the affected accounts? Is google fixing the issue case by case? really? There is a reason we're using Gmail, it is supposed to be robust, solid, dependable etc. And now it's not.

You should really consider moving your iPhone and iPad to Activesync instead of IMAP.  There's really no argument for IMAP on mobile devices any more.  I agree that you're in a bind if you really have to use Mac Mail/Thunderbird/whatever on your Macbook, but at least your iDevices would be okay....

My iPhone and iPad stopped receiving emails on Wed. Aug 8th 2012.  It still gives me the message,  "imap.gmail.com" is not responding.  Can we at least have a ballpark date for when this might be fixed??  Presently, I can only get new emails on my computer.
I rely on the iPad and iPhone for email communication when traveling.

Knowing at least a week, month? something is better than nothing.

The scant news reports from last week seemed to indicate that this problem is not widespread among IMAP users, but it sounds like there are many of us experiencing this issue. If more attention were put on this problem/outage, I wonder if the solution would come faster....?

Google (Gmail) - For a so called "Leader In The Field", having an issue affecting its customers for so long is simply not acceptable. In addition, the worst thing that any company can do is to NOT REPORT on progress, or even the lack of progress. This does not inspire confidence.

If not fixed within the next day and in the absence of meanigful communication I will have to change email provider and STOP Reccomending gMail as a reliable service, CLEARLY IT IS NOT!

We use Google Apps at http://cillesa.com, a small interior design business in the San Francisco Bay Area. We've been considering moving up to Google Apps for Business. If we upgrade today, when will that 99.9% uptime guarantee kick in? Will that get this IMAP problem fixed faster? Because our principal has been unable to receive email with her favored email clients (Apple's Mac and iOS Mail apps) since Wednesday. She's not a techie and process change impacts her effectiveness, so this is causing *severe* frustration.

I've read this topic all the way through. I appreciate the official responses from Google team members, but a timeline (or even a "we just don't know") would help guide our decision-making process as a small business. Can we please get some more information?

"Temporary" is less than 48 hours. This problem has been ongoing for 6 days now, or 144 hours if you prefer. This is absurd. How is it that the "fix" is so selective within gmail users? Why is the problem so selective as well? I have 4 gmail accounts and only one is affected. Google has a very deep resource pool, get out of the shallow end and fix the problem.

There have been scant news reports and most of them incomplete based upon one source reporter who said it was limited to Apple devices.  I've attempted to contact several with similar scant success.  One more or less blew me off, the others either no response or the amount of login and sharing social information that was required to send a message exceeded my will to share.

Agreed it would be professional of Google to indicate how many accounts are affected, assuming they know, and what the nature of the issue is, assuming they know.   Several assumptions here.

Maybe issues like this happen all the time and we are just noticing because we are personally affected. Nationwide power outages should take priority for fixing over this issue, just to keep a sense of perspective.   I am however rethinking my mail strategy.

2 things

1} I was a early fix, was down across 3 devices for 4 days. Have been trying to unsubscribe from this group since (no luck, followed all the instructions, keep getting dozens of emails...it won't stop!)

2) So, have been reading the non stop traffic, has now become a "reality show". So as I sit here all smug knowing I was a lucky one, my nightmare returns.

It seems the "IMAP" feature of syncing email across devices has stopped working. Yes, I get to read my email thru the native mac mail, but after 4 days of working correctly it now does not show that I have read email on all devices. So I get new mail even tho I have already read it on another device. Basically it operates like POP, not IMAP!

has anyone had this happen to them YET?

Sounds like some are fixed but others are left with the problems.

Some express that it works again, but only as POP Mail and not IMAP.

Is an e-mail received when the fix has occurred? Other wise so we have to keep logging in and out to find out?

In an earlier post about this problem, you asked for reports of the problem arising more than a few days ago.  On August 9, six days ago, gmail stopped downloading into Apple Mail.  It's been that way ever since. :-(

You will know it's fixed when your IMAP starts working again.  That means messages will start to appear in your IN box.  You won't have to do anything (Like read a message telling you so in your in box that just started working).  Yes, you will have to occasionally check your Apple Mail app to see if it started working - unless you're clairvoyant.

"Working again" is when IMAP works - nothing more or less.  POP, Exchange, browser, dedicated client are all work arounds that, by the way, will continue to work after IMAP is fixed.

I am sure Google has plenty of manpower on this task - the downside is too large.  But at some point more bodies does not speed the solution.  This problem is complicated and undoubtedly involves many pieces of hardware (servers, routers, etc.) and software configurations.  Clearly it's not a top level "one switch" fixes it all type of thing or they would have done that. When most accounts work and some don't (even at the same domain) it's a subtle problem.  They've told us the fix is being rolled out over time - that sounds like a hands on somewhat manual process.

My advice - if you're going to move away from Google because the grass is greener, do it.  Don't threaten Google here - that is not going to make them work harder (and at least for me, I don't want to hear it.)

Yes, I'm frustrated and down for a week, too but please excuse me for not saying so every day and bothering all of you!

That's it. Enough bullsh*t to the users. Does Google take us for total chumps? I am beginning to start spreading this story to all online columnists I know. I encourage other affected users to do the same thing. Enough is enough. Me being a Google apps user cannot really migrate out of it without sinking a couple of weeks of effort to migrate our docs, other google apps, calendar and allied services. This is consistent with my experience.  I got the error message from the thread title on my iphone 4S (5.1.1), which is configured to hit my apps account via imap, for 3-4 days.  

Then it started working again, albeit very slowly, Saturday morning. I saw the "messages not being marked as read" thing, but it seemed to be related to the slowness- when I opened a message, the little round "working" icon spun in the upper left corner of the screen for several minutes and I assumed that I was closing the message before the "new message" bit was being reset.

Now (since Monday evening) my phone's not getting new messages via imap, but it's not throwing the server error any more.

It's been able to get mail via exchange, throughout.

Yeah, like just migrate the mails over to new accounts. We don't mind resetting our passwords using whatever password reset mechanism we have registered. As long as things get working! I am amazed that all the super whiz kids and PhDs and brainiacs at Google haven't figured out a solution to an IMAP problem. Either that or there's some major breach and cover up operation going on and Google won't fess up.

Hey OregonDean....you're in lala land. If those impacted by this don't keep at it....the "SonaDs" out there, if they even "exist" will likely cease to pay any attention. This is not fun for anyone and many of us have spent MANY HOURS with working in new ways. Perhaps some of us will stay that way now. But don't use this space to vent to those trying to keep Google updated on our issue and in their face until it has been repaired.

I am also having this problem.  It is a particular pain because I will email myself reminders or links to check out later and use my phone as my primary device for both of those tasks.  I normally love Gmail and have since the original beta but it's a sure test of my love when the last email I can see for that account was from last Wednesday, almost a week ago.

Ok, so now it is even worse. Web access to my Gmail account has ENTIRELY STOPPED. So Gmail team - those workarounds you talked about.... well, those aren't available either. The moment I sign in to the web interface, I get a 0 byte HTTP response and that's it. No further.

I was responding to Pihlis's suggestion to delete and recreate the account in the phone's settings.  We've established that the problem is server-side and changing things on the phone doesn't fix the servers.

If IMAP were working, this would cause however many days' worth of cached headers to be re-downloaded.  If it's bandwidth use that's triggering this problem, then grabbing all those headers unnecessarily would be bad.

However, since IMAP's *not* working and headers aren't being fetched, I'm not sure that logic holds.  Though it's true that the servers will probably get swamped once the current fix propagates and everyone downloads a week's worth of headers, and going back farther than the beginning of the outage because the account's been cleared will likely slow down the process further.

Day 7. Still get system server error. There is something new today. Thunderbird shows I have new/unread email in my inbox but it doesn't show the emails. Last email in Thunderbird was 8/8/12. Error message keeps coming up. I can still login via web browser. This is getting extremely old.

This problem is associated with the email account which had the IMAP problem last week.  I created a second email account and I have no problem sending and receiving email.  So, this is not my device or phone settings.

Reporting as fixed here. IMAP is working again on the Mac and iOS devices. Our owner is very happy to have her email app back, but she's wary of "free" email services now.

Glad to see the fix is now reaching more of you. There were a couple of questions above I wanted to address.

jjkraw - You don't need to let us know your account is affected, we're aware and working through fixing all of the accounts that were impacted.

duncan7 - I think you're referring to the wrong item on the Known Issues page. This issue is the first one under POP, IMAP and Sync ('imap.gmail.com is not responding' error when retrieving mail via IMAP, mobile device, or tablet). It doesn't have to due with bandwidth. However, you are correct. Deleting and recreating the account on your email client will not fix this.


For those that were locked out and then fixed, I posted earlier (this thread is long so it's easy to miss) and it's in our sticky post, but to fix the IMAP connection issue, some affected users may be temporarily locked out of their accounts. We worked to restore your access as quickly as possible.

I confirm that IMAP has begun to function again on my account. It is now a matter of re-syncing all the emails and rebuilding the caches. So far no trouble encountered. My account was temporarily disabled for a few hours but it is now OK. Thanks for the fix.

My account is back up.  My hope, like many here, is that after you fix the problem you will give us some insight as to what it was, why it affected only some IMAP accounts, and why it took so long for the fixes to roll out to the various accounts. That will be good insight for those of us making vendor decisions for clients. Personally, I found your updates timely and appropriate - I do understand the communication limitations you are probably working under - but all should become clear after the battle in the internal debrief sessions I am sure the teams will have at Google.

imap through Outlook is back on for me.  It's losing connection quite a bit but I'm hoping this is just continuing maintenance by the Google team.  I switched my iphone to MS Exchange after the imap went out so I'm not sure about my devices.  I do hope we get an explanation after everyone is back on.

Although I seem to have received the "fix", I continue to get some sporadic error messages on my iPhone when sending mail. Also, we've been asked not to post to more than one discussion about this, but I'm sorry I cannot tell which is THE discussion. Perhaps someone can let me know!

Ditto on able to receive, but not sending.   It hangs on trying to send, using Thunderbird.  Gave it all night to update the cache before trying and failing again.

LKB427, BFL123 and g-inak - Are you getting a particular error when trying to send? Were you able to send earlier today and now are just experiencing issues? As a check, can you also make sure you can login to the web browser and can send mail without any error.

LINC8188 - I wasn't clear if you were experiencing the same "can receive, but can't send" that the three users above described or just still meant your IMAP wasn't working. If the latter, then we're still in the process of fixing all accounts.

Wow...thank you! This is the first time I feel someone is truly "listening". I was trying to send earlier from my iPhone and got an error message twice. BUT...I waited about 5 minutes and tried to send the message again, and it went through. Also, just sent a test from Apple mail it it went through. Just tried again on my iPhone and it appears to be working. THANK YOU FOR ASKING!

Was receiving and downloading email late last night.   This morning, tried to reply to several emails, using Thunderbird 14.0.    Perpetual delay on progress bar 'Sending'.   Had to leave for work so attempted to cancel.  First said the sent message was sent but couldn't be saved.  Then, next cancel attempt said message not sent.  Happened with 3 messages to different people with different source messages.

Adding insult to injury, I'm unable to stop receiving emails from this Google Group. Since my account started working again, I unsubscribed through the Manage My Groups setting, and still received emails. I sent email to gmail+un...@googleproductforums.com and was informed that "We have received your request to unsubscribe from gmail. However, you do not appear to be a member of gmail, so we have taken no further action."

Finally I have rejoined this group to make this post, then I will unsubscribe again. My guess is that because of the fix, Google Groups does not recognize my gmail address as being the same account, so therefore my attempts to unsubscribe aren't recognized.

Sona, can you alert  the developers to this issue?

g-inak - Can you let us know if it's still happening once you get home? Given we're not seeing many reports of this after fixes, it might be something else, but we can troubleshoot.

ajay2 - The fix only impacted your IMAP connection and not message delivery to your account, unsubscribing or Google Groups. Since this is a different issue than the IMAP one, do you mind starting a new thread and pointing me to it. I don't want to derail this one and I'd like to collect a few more details to make sure I'm fully understanding.

ajay2, If you go to the very top of the discussion, there is a small envelope that should be blackened if you are receiving email updates. If you click on it and make it white, they should stop.

I have this problem too and reported it earlier.  
On iOS it simply says "Cannot Send Mail.  Check the settings for the outgoing servers in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars".

This is still happening for me and is about to drive me utterly mad. Outlook 2012, customer preview. When sending/receiving pop up:

"Your IMAP server wants to alert you to the following: Web login required: http//support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?answer=78754 (Failure)"

After clicking OK, pop asking me to enter my user name and password for the following server imap.gmail.com. Needless to say, it doesn't help to reenter it.

Oddly, incoming mail does download and outgoing sends.

One of my gmail accounts won't load in Apple mail..which I believe is the IMAP failing.

It says there is a "System Error (failure)"

Waking up to another day without Gmail via IMAP on either my iPhone or iPad. Hi guys,

If you're still seeing the error that means we're still working on fixing your account. The only suggestions on this thread that will help you get to your messages are the temporary work arounds (web browser, download Gmail application, exchange, autoforwarding to another account where IMAP is working). 

IMAP with your email client will not work until we fix your account. I know it's frustrating, but I don't want you to have to keep trying fixes like deleting and re-adding your account to your email client, when the fix is on our end.

g-inak - Can you successfully send messages from the web browser without an error or do you get any temporary Oops errors? Do you have IMAP setup on your mobile device or a tablet? If so, any errors there. Did you change anything about your setup while your IMAP connection was still broken? Do you mind starting a new thread and point me there to troubleshoot since it's seems your the only one or one of few seeing this? I'd prefer to keep this thread focused on users who's IMAP connection is still not fixed so that we don't confuse others that might just be joining this thread.

@sonad I started another thread entitled "cannot send email after imap fix" two days ago.  I created a temporary account and that can send without problems.  It is definitely a problem with the fixed iMap account.

sending email from another iOS phone is working.  I think this is related to two factor authentication which I disabled when iMap started failing.

just an update on my imap issue. My iphone and iPad still cannot receive email, but the "send" function seems to be working.  The imap message arrived originally on my phone&iPad August 8th.

It's now 10, yes 10, days since this problem began and I still can't access Gmail via IMAP.  COME ON Google.  You are a massively resourced company with amazing skills - surely you can arrange roll-out of a fix more quickly than this.  You have reported that some accounts have been fixed - what about the rest of us.  Please please - like many others I use gmail for business and this is making life very difficult.  SonaD, can you post an encouraging response - please.

For what it's worth (assuming that the problem with my account is the same as everyone else's here), this seems to be an INBOX only problem.  Send works fine and messages in folders synch just fine.  So another work around is to create a new folder (INBOX2 for example) and then setup a filter to move all of your incoming mail to the new folder.  You'll then be able to get your email as long as your email program/app can handle the INBOX error and keep going (mine does).

If your email program/app has the option to switch your default folder view and to only synch your new folder and not the main Inbox then the issue would be completely transparent (my program does not though).

Still doesn't work for me and I'm using Google apps. My IT folks are waiting for anything and nothing comes from Google. Have your peeps considered rolling back from whatever you guys had done to the code? Having the issue for 9 days without any fix in sight is unacceptable. And NO I don't wish to use the web interface.

Any ETA on when this is going to be fixed.  After a week, I'm ready to give up on Google Apps and move our email to something else.

Only being able to access email via a web browser is not a solution for a business.

I've looked into Rackspace, which has $2/user/month for regular email as well as hosted exchange.  From my reading of reviews and issues they've had, they are considered a good provider but not without their own maintenance problems (email occasionally getting lost, some downtime).

Microsoft just launched hosted exchange as well.  It's $4/user/month and includes AD.  It's new, so it doesn't have a track record yet.

I will probably end up moving everything over to Rackspace.  In cases exactly like this one, it would be nice to have a human that I could talk to, and not just product forums telling me they've been working on it for over a week.

For what it's worth at this point, I was briefly able to send and receive on all devices but after about 24 hours I lost the ability to send on my iPhone and it hasn't worked for 3 days now. I am not getting an error message; it just stops trying to send and shows an unsent message in my Outbox.

It's day 10 for me and still no service on my iPhone, iPad or Mac. I only have access when I log into gmail via the web, which is a hassle. Is there an anticipated date that this will be fixed?

If anyone asked me this question two weeks ago I would have whole-heartedly said "Gmail".  I've been using Gmail for over six years and never had an issue.   But, this problem has shown me that Google doesn't give a damn about gmail.  They must not make any decent money off of it and have moved on to new, shiner things.  They've handle the support in a completely amateurish way.  Its completely unacceptable that people are still without email access for almost two weeks.

The problem is where to go.  Yahoo is a mess. The new outlook.com looks interesting, but its Microsoft which has a way of screwing things up.  Unfortunately, looks like most people are stuck with gmail.

Still seeing the error.

I think one reason this problem is ultimately so frustrating is that the Gmail web and app interface is so inferior to Apple Mail. (For example, seeing who wrote what to whom within a long email chain, and replying selectively, is much harder than in Apple mail.)

 The workaround isn't just a change; it's a downgrade.

I'M STILL DOWN ON ALL DEVICES. Ugh! I'm receiving a new message now, though. The SMTP server “smtp.gmail.com” rejected the password for user “XXXXX...@gmail.com” It's the same password that I'm using to access gmail via the web; so, I'm certain it's correct.

Please add my account to the list of those not working.  My gmail account is producing the same IMAP errors (we have tried the captcha, rebooting, deleting and reinstalling the account) on Firefox, Outlook, my husband's iPhone4 and my iPhone4s.  My husbands 2 gmail accounts are NOT having any issues on these same devices.

If so, then you need to enter the application specific password in your email client. Since applications like your phone or IMAP don't accept sign-in codes, you need to setup an application specific password for any devices or applications that you use to access your Google Account. Hmm. My IMAP was up for several days, but went down again this morning and I'm getting the "imap.googlemail.com is not responding" message, again.  That's twice, now, that the problem's gone away and recurred on my apps (free) account.

My gmail account has been getting this error message ("Cannot get mail. The mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding) intermittently for weeks.  Eventually the messages come through, but most times I log into gmail on my iphone3 I get a whole series of error messages telling me to verify my settings.  Please add me to your list, SonaD!

Still no luck on iPad (since 6 Aug). It is a Google Apps account (not this one), do we explicitly need to report things or can you figure it out on your end? I never turned on two-factor auth.

David Dunham - Keep an eye out for a message from us so I can confirm. This is usually not needed, but I'd like to check in your case since you're posting from a different account.

duncan7 - Since applications like your phone or IMAP don't accept sign-in codes, you need to setup an application specific password for any devices or applications that you use to access your Google Account. I'm not clear on the resolution for this problem: can't receive email via Thunderbird using imap.gmail.com. One of my co-workers is experiencing this issue: Norma...@nanometrics.ca. Do you need to push the 2-step authentication to his account directly or is the fix being applied to all Google accounts?

Hi SuzanNmx - I think you might be mixing up some of the posts I've made. The issue we are fixing for some accounts is where users' suddenly started seeing "imap.gmail.com not responding" on their email clients that use an IMAP connection. 2-step verification is different from this. 2-step verification adds an extra of security to your Google Account and can be used with IMAP. It is not related to the issue on this thread and it will not fix it either.

I posted about it earlier because after fixing the IMAP issue for some accounts, users received an error about username and password. Although they thought that their IMAP connection was still not fixed, it turned out that they had turned on 2-step verification during the time of this issue and needed to follow different steps to get that working.

Let us know what error your coworker is getting and we can help troubleshoot.

When did you first start experiencing an issue?
What error are you getting?

David Dunham - Thanks for sending us details. It also looks like your account wasn't affected by the issue we're fixing, but you are getting the same error message, so let's troubleshoot further:

Do you use IMAP for your account with anything else besides your iPAD? If so, are the rest working and just not the iPAD.
Have you tried removing the account from your iPAD and re-adding it?
Can you confirm your settings with this Help Center article: https://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77702

Basically I want to confirm if only your IMAP connection with the iPAD is the issue or any IMAP connection you try to setup.

The individual with the problem is my colleague at norma...@nanometrics.ca. He first encountered the problem around 8 Aug. The problem is this:

When he launched Thunderbird, he no longer received any email messages, i.e. his Inbox, etc remain empty. He told me he saw error messages  referencing "imap.gmail.com" but he didn't record them. His email account works normally in Google Email. I tested my own email account in his Thunderbird client and it worked normally for me, just not for him, and no one else in the company is reporting this issue.

No, I missed the bit about 2-step verification. Should I try this with Norman's account? If so, please point me to the link.

I do have 2 factor auth set up.  I revoked and reissued the app-specific password I'd set up for IMAP on my device last night and was able to get the day's worth of email that had accumulated since the error had reappeared.

This morning, I'm getting the imap server error again.  Is the "fix" repeatedly locking me out?

SonaD - I think this is issue with IMAP on my phone or 2-step verification. I am following this thread and I see that nearly all people are talking about same symptoms.

I am using iPhone 4 and standard email app. The problem is that I can't receive any new emails on the phone and the most weird thing is that old emails downloaded in the past are blank, but I can see them. I am also using The Bat email client (IMAP configured) on my PC. At some stage it stopped working as well, but few days ago started working again. I didn't change any settings at all. However, the issue appears with the iPhone. I am using 2-step verification for a long time. I switched it off / on, many times, no luck :(

What other details you might need ?

SuzanNmx - You don't need to try 2-step authentication. I just wanted to confirm that your colleague didn't turn it on for the account. Keep an eye out for a message from us so we can get more details to troubleshoot.

duncan7 - We only had to lock out users while we applied the fix to your account, but it will not repeatedly lock you out. Can you try revoking the application specific password again and disable 2-step and see if you continue to get the error? I'm just trying to narrow down what might be causing this for you.

Zydrunas Narmontas - I think you're issue is different since it was working and you're not experiencing IMAP connection errors on all devices. The users in this thread had a broken IMAP connection on any device or email client. Take a look at these troubleshooting articles and then start a new thread (you can point me to it for troubleshooting help) so we don't derail this thread. In the new thread, can you provide the exact error you are seeing on your iPhone as well?

On 2nd gen iPad, using native mail app, I have several Google Apps email accounts and a regular ol' Gmail account.  Google Apps accounts never seem to have a problem.  Once every couple of weeks I get the imap server error everyone is complaining about.  I can usually fix it by changing my application-specific password, but I will get the error again in a week or two.  I shouldn't have to do that; it should work.  This morning, though, changing the application-specific password didn't work, so I'm out of options.

Respectfully it been two weeks. We would appreciate a direct response from Google Gmail (Manager/Technician) addressing the IMAP issue. We appreciat your timely response and updates however no real explanation of the complexity. Was this a result of the 2-Step Verification ... was this the result of an internal upgrade? Server failures? A lot of questions. I have had to migrate email to another service in the meantime. Too many communications without web access. I plan to return after the problem is resolved.

I have yet to receive a single reply to any of my posts, and I'm now utterly confused about what's going on, what problem Google was attempting to fix, and whether there is - or ever will be - any solution to my problem.

I lost access to my IMAP mail (domain hosted elsewhere) for several days on all of my devices. The only way I could access it was through web mail. Eventually it started working again, except that I can't send from my iPhone's Mail programme. Is this an offshoot of the original problem or a new one? Does this relate to the 2-step verification everyone keeps talking about? Is Google working on a fix for this particular issue? Not being able to send from my iPhone is not a long-term option. So should I be looking for a different email solution, either IMAP or POP but not with Google?

This is extremely frustrating, and I'm pretty tired of texting myself reminders to send emails when I get back to my desk.

Thanks, I did get that message and replied. However my Google Apps account is still failing, on one device. (I dug out an old iPad 1 I use for occasional testing, and the account worked fine there.) I am able to *send* email from the affected device, but no surprise, since that's using smpt.gmail.com instead of imap.gmail.com.

No received mail on iPad, with Mail app, since 6 August. The error is the thread title.

Hi!

I have just installed the lastest version of Thunderbird, but it seems that my e-mail is experiencing the same problems as all of yours here.

All my folders have been downloaded. Not all e-mails have been downloaded, though, although the program seems to still downaload some by bulk every now and then. Some folders have e-mails in them, some don't.

And each time I try to get new mails or refresh the account, I get the error message: "The mail server for account ...@gmail.com responded: System error(Failure)".

I have another two e-mail accounts on Thunderbird too (although not from Google), and they work absolutely fine.

I have now had this problem in more than a day, and it is becoming increadibly frustrating.

SonaD, is there something you could do to help?

We have resolved the issue for a majority of users that were experiencing this IMAP connection issue.

the_Fever - your issue sounds different since it's intermittent. The accounts that are experiencing the IMAP connection issue over the last two weeks cannot connect via IMAP on the impacted account on any device.

PLPL - Can you confirm what error you are getting on your iPhone? Are you using IMAP anywhere else, maybe on an email client on your computer?

David Dunham - Thanks for your reply. Did you see my post yesterday regarding your reply? I pasted below again in case you missed. Let's also use the new thread.
JulianaFarha and Amilcar5 - If it started working again and you're having problems now, it is most likely something else. Can you post to the new thread I started below with answers to these questions and I'll help troubleshoot? Can you provide specifics on what the error says? Are you using IMAP on your computer as well with an email client? I'm trying to narrow down if it is your IMAP connection for one device or multiple. You can also use the Gmail application on your iPhone as an alternative while we troubleshoot.

Paul_M_Aus - If IMAP is working on one client and not another, it is not related to this issue. The issue on this thread affects IMAP on all devices. Can you also post to the new thread I started below and we can help troubleshoot.

I-Need-Help - Is the account impacted the same one you use to post to this Help Forum (you don't have to put your email address in your confirmation)?

I realize I asked a few here to go to the new thread I started. This thread is long I realize and has many people on it so I'd like to keep it focused on the IMAP connection issue from 2 weeks ago where users cannot connect to IMAP on any of their devices and it has not worked intermittently.

Unfortunately, I am still having this problem. This is frustrating because my boss just got me a Google Apps account, and I need to transfer a lot of mail from my personal account to my business account (I had my business mail forwarded to my Gmail and used a filter to sort them). IMAP appears to be the only efficient way to transfer them, even the migration tool uses IMAP. Please resolve this as soon as possible so I don't have to keep referencing two accounts. The account that I can not access via IMAP is the account I am posting this from.

I'm experiencing the issue as well.  The issue did not start until I changed my gmail password (via the web).  After changing my gmail password, I attempted to update the password stored on my phone (to reflect my new password) and since then I've been receiving this imap error.  I can login successfully on the web.  I cannot login at all via iPhone or iPad (I've already attempted to login using the browser on those devices as well).

I thought I had the problem mentioned in this thread, but since my problem isn't fixed yet...
When I try to open some folders in Thunderbird, I get the message "System Error (failure)" from gmail. Some folders are working. And I have another gmail-account, there are no problems at all.
When I try to open the folders on my iPhone, it says that the server isn't responding.
I can transfer mails in these folders, but I cannot open them afterwards.
Webmail is working, but I want to use Thunderbird and my iPhone for this!

Hi SonaD,

I came across this thread after a lot of searching on several forums.  I have two-factor authentication turned on (for some time now) and I was also affected by this issue with IMAP access earlier in the month.

I cannot setup my Gmail account on any desktop or mobile client via IMAP at this time.  I get the original server is not responding error noted here, but my labels do "show/sync" in the mail client I am using but each folder in the client shows "0" mail (have tested Mac Mail 10.8.1, Outlook 2011, and Outlook 2010 for PC with no success in any client).

Let me know if you want me to do any special troubleshooting or testing, or if I am still part of the larger issue w/my account.

My account is still unavailable on my iPhone. Tomorrow it will be THREE WEEKS! Why is Gmail not reaching out to affected users directly? If you know our account is affected, then ffs send us an email update so we're not sitting here wondering and having to check this forum hoping that SonaD updates. I agree - the time frame to get this issue fixed is ridiculous - how much longer before I can start using my Outlook account again to receive messages??  I also want to know if all of the incoming and outgoing messages that have not been sent or received by Outlook in the past three weeks will be able to be found on Outlook once the problem is resolved or are they only available on gmail?

I now have Gmail on my iPhone; iPad and MAC outlook 2011. I have deleted my Gmail Account and rebuilt several times with WIN Outlook 2010. Still no Gmail. Error is allways unable to connect with incomeing server. I can connect to my company IMAP email with iPhone; iPad and MAC Outlook 2011. I cannot connect to company IMAP email with WIN Ouutlook 2011. Our IT folks say it is because MAC Outlook 2011 connect via web server connection and WIN Outlook connects directly to mail server, not supported by company. Worth looking into?

SonaD, I fiddled a bit and was finally able to send email again from my iPhone. The new problem - which I just discovered this evening - is that I'm not receiving any replies to messages I send from my phone. I found it odd that I hadn't heard back from a few people who I'm in regular contact with and who I'd emailed from my phone with quick questions. They've now all confirmed that they did answer and even forwarded their replies. I hadn't received a single one. Is this a new problem? Is anyone else reporting this? Any suggestions?

Yep - my help forum posting name is my gmail account name.  I suspect that my issue is with IMAP as I am experiencing problems with getting gmail on my iphone mail client and 'Mail' on my imac (both accessed using IMAP).  The Gmail app works fine on my iphone and mail.google.com is working fine for me also.

When checking my gmail via my iphone mail client I get the error message"Cannot Get Mail. The username or password is incorrect", however I know that both are entered correctly.

The 'Mail' client on my imac simply has an exclamation mark against the Gmail account and doesn't show any new emails.

I am using 2-step authentication but have been using it successfully for quite some time.

Hope this helps to narrow it down for me.

SonaD - Thank you. This is my primary account and the only one set up on my iPhone. I'm getting an error message that the user name or password for imap.gmail.com is incorrect.

I know my password, and I have tried unsuccessfully to run captcha unlock in case that was the issue.

It's been nearly 4 weeks now and I still cannot send/receive/access/view any emails using my Gmail account. Why haven't Google released an email statement to all affected users and notified them that they are aware of the problem. All it takes is some acknowledgement of the problem to give us some confidence that it is being resolved. This is very poor incident management by Google.

The Gmail app is nowhere as near as user-friendly as the built-in mail functionality on the iPhone.

SonaD - can you advise how much longer the resolution will take and whether you are aware of which accounts are affected.

Jmartyn90 - It looks like your account is impacted and I'm checking on resolution time.

HardeepA - We have posted that we are aware of this issue publicly in our Help Forum as well as the Gmail Known Issues page. Most of the impacted accounts don't use IMAP, but I realize it's extremely frustrating for those who do. It does look like your account was affected and I'm checking on resolution time.

I have not enabled two-step verification. I was getting the error message at the heading of this post (the mail server imap.gmail.com...) for the first 4-5 days, then was suddenly getting the user name/password for imap message.

I deleted the account on my phone but was not successfully able to add it again due to the error message.

Hi, I checked my account settings and saw that mail was set to go out through smtp.gmail.com. I added imap.gmail.com to the list so it could try that if the smtp address didn't work. No idea why, but it worked: I could suddenly receive mail when I hadn't been able to for a solid week, even though I'd changed the outgoing mail server and hadn't touched the incoming one. As I mentioned, I discovered yesterday that while I was receiving email on my iPhone, I wasn't receiving replies to any messages I'd actually sent from my phone. Bizarre.

No, I haven't tried deleting and reinstating the account in this instance. But I have been having mail problems on my phone ever since I got it 2 years ago: at least 4 or 5 times a day it stops receiving mail and I get an error message saying 'the server imap.gmail.com is not responding. please check your account settings...' The only way to get it to receive mail from that point is to switch the phone off and then on. Trying to solve that, I did several things including deleting my account and re-adding it. Nothing has ever worked. (In fact, my phone has just given me that message while I've been typing this one...)

Any thoughts?

Still getting the imap.gmail.com not responding on iPhone iOS mail app - been weeks since I've been able to get messages.  Is there actually a fix for this or should I be looking for a new non-gmail account?

JulianaFarha - imap.gmail.com is only required for your incoming server to receive mail. The outgoing server is smtp.gmail.com. Can you confirm that you added imap.gmail.com to your incoming server and not outgoing?

Kellysduncan - Is the account you're seeing issues with the same as the one you use to post here? If so, then it was not affected by the current IMAP connection issue. Are you able to send, but not receive mail? Have you tried removing and re-adding your account to the iPhone?

In Outlook 2003, I added the IMAP account, it appears to have taken the username and password correctly, as it displays the list of folders that I have in G-Mail, including the custom ones.  When I click on a folder, it appears empty, even in the INBOX after having it online for several hours. In Thunderbird, the results are about the same, but it does actually give me an error message as I click on each folder. The error is "The current operation on 'WhateverFolderNameHere' did not suceed. The mail server for account nos...@gmail.com responded: System error (Failure)" I have tried the incoming mail server as both imap.gmail.com and imap.googlemail.com, both on port 993. I have tried both my full e-mail address and just the user for the username. SSL is selected with Normal Password.

Glad to know I am under the confirmed affected "known" area.  Please do let me know if I can do any troubleshooting or anything else to assist.  No change as of current time, and I have tried again this evening just to be sure.  Same main issue.

If it matters at all, I turned off Two-Factor authentication and turned it back on to no effect.

My Gmail account (this one that I've signed in with) has not been working with the mail client on my iPhone and iPad2 since the evening of August 7, 2012.  To this day, August 30th, I am still receiving the message, "The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding...." whenever I try to access this Gmail account from either device.

IMAP is enabled on the account settings of my Gmail account, I have deleted/re-added this account to the device, I don't have 2-step authentication... so I'm not sure what else to do.

Can you please help?

Yes I have enabled 2 step verification however it has been working fine for me since before March 2012.

I have had this issue for over 2 weeks now (problem occurred on 15th August).

Today I have tried deleting and reinstating the imap account on my iphone with no success.  I still get the error message (username or password is incorrect).

I have also tried turning off 2step verification.  That didn't work either.

2step verification has been turned back on and still can't access my email via imap.

Is there anything else I can try at my end?

gavmoir - In addition to turning off 2-step, can you also go in and revoke the device from your settings? I know turning it off should be enough, but we did have another user on this thread where revoking it solved the issue and then they were able to set everything up again. If that does it, I'll send that feedback to the team. Also, do you mind if we take your troubleshooting to the thread linked below (I'm on it) so we can keep this one focused where we need to fix user's accounts.

Since August 8th, I have not been able to receive Gmail messages in either iOS on iPhone or iPad, or in Apple Mail on my iMac.

When I try to get new mail, my iMac throws the error "Mail was unable to open this mailbox on the server 'imap.gmail.com.' The server returned the error: System error (Failure)." Similarly, my iPhone and iPad say "Cannot Get Mail. The mail server 'imap.gmail.com' is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings."

Throughout this time, I have been able to access my account with the same username and password via the Gmail web interface. And, I can still send mail from this gmail account on these devices. So, I know it's not an issue with the account settings. And, I'm not satisfied with this workaround.

In terms of solutions, it appears that 2-step verification and unlock captcha are not the answers. In any case, 2-step verification wasn't on when the problem started, and though I tried turning it on when that was recommended, I have confirmed that it is off now. Since SonaD posted about this bug on August 9, I have been waiting for the fix to "hit everyone that was impacted within the next few days, likely into next week." It's now 9/1. SonaD, can you please look into this account (the one I'm posting with) and see what's going on?

SonaD, I haven't heard back from you since I replied on Wednesday to your message, although I have noticed that several people tried doing what you suggested - deleting and re-adding their gmail accounts - and it did not work. Do you have any other suggestions? If not, I've decided to find another provider. Every day I learn of new miscommunications with friends and colleagues because they are not getting my emails, or I am not receiving their replies. We fixed several accounts last night/early this morning, depending on your time zone. I didn't know exactly when it would happen and I apologize that it took so long to fix your IMAP connection.

JulianaFarha - I had responded earlier asking for clarification on whether you added imap.gmail.com to your incoming or outgoing server, since adding it to outgoing didn't sound normal. Is your IMAP connection just not working every few days? Any errors? Keep an eye out for a message from us so we can get a few more details to investigate.

Hi  SonaD - I was a part of the accounts fixed this morning!  All set!!!  Apple Mail is syncing for the first time right now in a long time.

If you are on an iOS Device (iPad, iPhone) the best way to setup Gmail is as an Exchange activesync account.  Go here to read about it, and follow the directions for your iPad that correspond to the iPhone (same Mail app).  Not to mention it gets around this IMAP issue completely.

I do not work for Google BTW - been using this for years on my Apple devices and it's way better than IMAP for several reasons you can read about on their site.  

Otherwise you can download the Gmail app for your iPad and use that as well.  Or open Gmail in Safari on the iPad.

In addition, since your'e both experiencing and on the same domain are there any other commonalities? For example, do you both experience at work, but not at home?

noaa.gov users - I'm looking into it and will reach out over email if we need more details. In the meantime you can still access your account directly through the web interface (https://mail.google.com) and download the Gmail app on iOS or use it on Android (should come preinstalled).

Smalls72 - Your account wasn't affected by the issue on this thread. Can you try removing and re-adding your account? Also, please confirm your IMAP settings match the configuration for Apple Mail in this Help Center article: http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75726

The reply below says issue should be taken care of for all users. That was Aug. It is now Sept and still unresolved. I get the same message as the folks below. My iPhone 4S is acting up for Gmail only. It says the mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in MAil settings. I'm still getting the "The mail server 'imap.googlemail.com' is not responding." error on my iphone 4S.  The problem goes away occasionally, at which point my phone will sync a bug slug of mail, but the imap connection fails more often than not.

I have turned off 2-factor identification and recreated the account, with no improvement.  Exchange (with the same password) functions reasonably consistently, though I'd prefer to use IMAP because searching old messages seems to be faster and more reliable via IMAP, when it's working.

I am still without IMAP.  One of the devices I was able to pull an error off of stated the following:

"gmail illegalStateException: This operation is not allowed on a closed folder"

I still have no IMAP access on Thunderbird, or either iPad or Android devices.

NOAA_Dan - Please reach out to the email administrator for your domain at noaa.gov and they will be able to give you more details regarding the status of the issue with your domain. You can still access your account through our web interface while you're experiencing issues with IMAP.

Stoppit - Is the account you're experiencing issues for the same one you used to post to the forum? If so, it wasn't impacted by this specific issues. Can you provide me with a few more details of your problem? Are you getting a specific error? Did you try removing and re-adding your account to your iPhone?

Hi SonaD, it is now working...BUT this account has been corrected and then reverted to the error message on several occasions since mid Aug.

The error message I am getting everytime I send/receive on the iPhone is "The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding" - same as everyone else.

Yes the account having trouble on the iPhone is the same account as I am using on this forum. I have 5 other gmail accounts on the iphone an dthey are all working fine.

I did delete the account but that did nothing in the past.

The error seems to be returning to my account every few days.

Was there any common demominator which effected my account but has now been corrected? Something you can keep an eye on and check whether it is returning under the radar?

SonaD, since my last post I have now travelled to Asia and the imap on the iphone was working for an hour and now it has stopped agian with the same "The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding" error message.

This is so frustrating. I am here on busienss and I don't know if I am being emailed by clients!!! PLEASE FIX THIS ONCE AND FOR ALL! (same account used ot post here).

Hi Stoppit - It is unusual that it works and then stops and your account was not affected by the original issue on this thread. Have you noticed any pattern to when it happens (location, every X hours, etc)?

Do you use IMAP on any other email clients (iPAD, Thunderbird, Outlook, etc)? Keep an eye out for a message from us so we can get some more information to investigate.

altvis, rickyc0 - Is the account you're seeing errors on the same one you use to post to the Help Forum? Is so, then your accounts were not affected by the issue on this thread. Can you provide me with more details to troubleshoot? Have you tried removing and re-adding your account to your device or email client? Yep, the problem lies with the same account I am replying with. I am using two step authentication so I generated password. When I try to connect to Sparrow, NotifyApp or Mail app, with my email / the generated password I get this...

Sparrow: "Connection to Gmail could not be established. Your email or password is not correct. Please check you typed them properly and retry."

Notify: "Notify was unable to connect. Please verify the information you entered is correct, and IMAP is enabled for this account."

Mail: "Logging into the Google IMAP server 'imap.gmail.com' failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn't correct, you cannot receive messages."

I started seeing this issue three months or so ago. Once I can manage a handshake, it's fine though I'll occasionally get disconnected. So I'm still connected via IMAP on my phone. I was actually connected to my Mail app until I decided to remove it a few weeks ago. When I tried to connect it again, it failed and I've been getting this error since.

My gmail account has also been giving me the error "The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding." on my iPhone.  If you could check whether my account needs to be fixed, I'd be grateful.

I have the exact same problem with my Google Apps account (the one connected to where I'm posting this from).

Since installing iOS 6 yesterday on my iPhone, I haven't been able to download mail not even once from this Google Apps account, but another Google Apps account is working fine still. Tried with another password also. It has always been a problem with Google Apps and iPhone for me, usually a handful of times per week, but I could always solve it by force closing iPhone Mail and then trying again - but not this time.

Same with iPad after installing iOS 6, it now also gives "not responding" on the same Google Apps account, all the time.

Have you recently upgraded to iOS6? If so, you will need to delete and recreate your account. Please let SonaD and I know if you are able to get in after. If you are still unable to access Gmail via IMAP on your iOS device, please ping the thread and include the error message that you see.

No way to connect through any app (iOS 5, Mac OSX Mountain Lion), but it's ok in every browser. I'm using Mail App, and the browser solution is really no good for the productivity ...

I haven't upgraded to iOS 6 recently. Looking at my application specific passwords, it looks like I'm still using the same password generated for my iOS email since Feb 18, 2011 and that works fine. Now my Mail app for Mac was working until I removed the account recently. When I attempted to generate a new account specific account and add my gmail account to Mac Mail, it failed. What's interesting is... the password I generated yesterday shows that my mail account was last accessed today, yet I am unable to connect to IMAP / download any messages.

Is there a private means of reaching you guys where I can depict the error via a video if what we are trying to say is unclear?

I am getting the error message on IOS 6 iPhone.
"The Mail Server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail Settings.
This happened after the upgrade from IOS 5 to IOS 6. Is this an interop issue with IOS 6? The exchange method on iPhone using m.google.com seems to work, but imap.gmail.com is not. Authentication completes in the imap settings, but inbox is unable to update and continues to generate that error message.

I've attached a reference on how to add a new IMAP account. To delete your IMAP account, go to the Settings app and then tap Mail, Calendar, Contacts select Gmail and then the account you would like to remove and at the bottom of the account tap Delete Account. 

@bwinchester - you deleted and recreated the account and IMAP is still not working for you?

Okay, I figured out the issue. When I double click to copy and paste the password on Chrome... it seems a recent change has made it so that a line break gets copied in addition to the 16 characters... I think this may be the issue anyone else who is trying to access desktop applications is having... perhaps a click to copy field should be implemented...

I am facing the same IMAP problem as everyone else on this thread, but I thought I was alone! We did eveything (buy book on using Apple Mail, reinstall the mail box a dozen times, reinstall Lion, buy Mountain Lion), but nothing worked and we still could not get the Apple Mail client to work with our Gmail, after years of it working beautifully in IMAP. We get the same error message "The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding." It is also not working on two iPhone 4 units that my wife and I use.

Can you fix this account?

I have been using Outlook 2010 for years to access my Google apps email with IMAP with no problem at all.

However, started from 21 Sept 2012 my Outlook could no longer access Google IMAP server. I got these messages:

 “Log onto incoming mail server (IMAP): The connection to the server failed.”

"Task 'Checking for new mail in subscribed folders on __________@sks-indonesia.com.' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook cannot check for new mail in subscribed folders for account __________@sks-indonesia.com. Error: Cannot connect to the server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'"

This issue happened to all Google apps accounts (3 accounts)

I upgraded to iOS 6 from 5.1.1. Before the upgrade, I was able to use Gmail IMAP using Apple's native iPhone 4 Mail application successfully with 2-factor authentication and while using a different From address. After the upgrade, I am no longer able to use GMail using Apple's Mail.

The error I get is 'The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. ..."

I've tried deleting are reinstalling the Gmail IMAP account several times, even going so far as to reboot my iPhone 4. Nothing works.

I don't know if this an Apple issue or a Gmail issue, but right now I have no visibility into fixing the issue. Is Google working on a fix? If so, what's the timeframe for a fix? If not, why not.

I was having the same authentication problems with google imap after upgrading my IOS devices to version 6. After some investigating I found the fix and successfully implemented it on my IOS devices. I had the same issue that smtp.gmail.com could not connect since 9/23/12 on my Mac snow leopard mail program.  This was the problem for all of my gmail accounts.  I could still receive / send mail via my Window XP Outlook 2007 and from my Android ICS software but not from my Mac.  

I did not change anything. Just one morning I could not get my emails.  I did like everyone else here - I searched and search for an answer without luck.

Here is what I found - I use Virus Barrier X6 on my Mac (yea like a Mac never gets a virus and you do not need a virus program).  I checked my activity logs and I found 2 new address that were blocked because these addresses tried to do a port scan on my computer on the same SSL 993 port for your outgoing gmail settings.  These address were blocked about the same time I stopped receiving email.  The addresses was 173.194.64.109 and 108 (I did a "whosi" and guess who owns this address - Google.)

For whatever reason and do not care to discuss it but Google tried do a port scan so my virus program permanently blocked that address.  I removed the block and now all my emails are working.

I am not an expert so please do not ask me how to check your specific virus or firewall program.  All I can say is my program blocked Google; therefore, my email stopped work.

I have been unable to connect to imap.gmail.com using mac os x 10.8.2, Mail 6.1 version for about 3 days.  Not sure who's end is at fault or why, but after extensive googling and trying account removal, reconfiguration label resetting, email pruning, and so forth ad nausea; I changed the imap setting from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com and all my mail is working again.  I'm sure it wont work for long, but for now it is.  If you are having the imap.gmail.com server not responding error, try changing the imap server to imap.googlemail.com and see if it works.  YMMV

I amusing Ipad and after installing its new version i got the error that "imap.gmail.com" server is not responding. i can use gmail on laptop but not on ipad but can open gmail at safari. by hit and trial basis, i got rid of this problem. i change the password of my gmail account by using the laptop and through safari in ipad. then i delete the settings of gmail in ipad and then create new account in ipad and all my mails start working in ipad.

We still cannot get the Apple Mail client to work with our Gmail (problem started Sept. 12) , after years of it working beautifully in IMAP. I have the same problem.  I usually use Gmail over the web, but decided to use Apple's Mail program in OSX 10.8.2 for the first time in a couple of months (in order to refresh what was in my Apple Mailbox).  I did the Connection Doctor, and the IMAP clients won't connect and after a while I get a triangle with an exclamation point next to my gmail accounts on the left pane of Apple Mail (6.1).  

I guess it's back to using the web for my mail.

I am still having this problem.  It started about on 9/20 (it flared up once before - in august I think and then seemed to fix itself) and I have not been able to fix it.  Have been traveling a lot in places where phone is only access to e-mail.  It has been a huge problem because i"ve lost access to my work account. Can you please provide an update on what's going on and how soon (if ever?) you hope to get it fixed?!

Well...I see this issue has been ongoing for quite a while.  I am sitting here in a work camp in Northern Alberta.  MAcBook Pro.  Mail version..not really sure as to how I can even find that..but likely the newest. I have not received e-mail via the mac mail client since the 29th of September.  


Have messed around with settings for three nights and to me it looks fine... my Bold 9900 works just fine with both my accounts coming in and I can access google main via the web...major PITA.!!

I would use the web based client but in my opinion it simply SUCKS. I have both Thunderbird and Mac Mail..neither is operative..my two gmail accounts are offline as is iCloud.

What gives here..??

ADIOS MUCHACHO's...I'll be visiting yahoo - seems they have no issues there.  The amount of work that will entail boggles my mind...changing every place that has my 2 accounts as part of their contact info.

Sorry we've been away from this thread for a bit. We have fixed the significant majority of users that experienced this issue from early August. If you just started experiencing issues, then you were not affected. Please try the following to help resolve your issue.

1) If you've upgraded to iOS 6, try removing and then recreating the account and that's been doing the trick.
2) Try logging into your account through the web and make sure nothing is wrong with your username, password or general access.
3) Double check your IMAP settings (servers, ports, etc): http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75726&topic=1668961&ctx=topic
4) Try removing and then recreating the account.
5) Did you recently activity 2-step verification? If so, make sure you're entering the application specific password: http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=185833
6) A good rule of thumb is that if you're having an IMAP issue on only one device or with one email client, then it's most likely settings and not an issue with your account. If you're getting the same error across devices and email clients (Apple Mail, iOS, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc), then it might be something else. If you only use one device/email client, try a second to help narrow down if it's just the settings.

No joy for Outlook 2011 for Mac, mail app, jabber, iMessage (via jabber). Setting up via the mail section under settings, i check the Email box for the gmail account added and it fails. I have an android phone, so i cant test if it would fail via iphone or w/e. 

I have tried imap.gmail.com and imap.googlemail.com. I've been googling for weeks for a fix and no joy.

I see this is still listed under known issues for Gmail. But from what the last post says, you have it fixed..

i've deleted and recreated the account via mail and iMessage and outlook i dont know how many times.
i double checked my imap settings. it is indeed enabled.
I tried turning on 2 step verification and using the unique password. no luck. turned it back off. still nothing.

Guess this gmail users is stuck to web.. Please halp!!

Thanks for providing those details. I checked the account you're posting with and this account wasn't affected by the IMAP issue from August.

What error do you see when you say it fails? Are you setting IMAP up for the first time, or did your existing IMAP connection stop working. When did you start experiencing this?

Can you also confirm that you can login via web https://mail.google.com successfully, so we can rule out any username/password issues after turning off 2-step?

I've started getting these errors today[1]. And I'm able to trigger this on two of my google accounts if I do the following:

1. Expose only the 'All Mail' and INBOX (automatic) folders to IMAP
2. Sync using offlineimap (which is otherwise rock solid)

INBOX syncs correctly but 'All Mail' shows this error.

Started happening for me on my iPhone iOS6 mail yesterday afternoon at 3:18pm Eastern time ("imap.google.com" not responding, please check your authentication).

I have had 2-factor authentication for some time with no issues.

Can login to gmail via Mobile Safari just fine. Mail is set to retrieve every 15 minutes.

Did the CAPTCHA reset

Regenerated a new app-specific password, and used that.

Created a new Gmail account within iOS Mail. This downloaded mail ONCE, then started displaying the error.

Interestingly, iOS Mail initially verifies the account within the Settings when a new password is entered (checkboxes appear momentarily next to the username, password, server name etc fields) but then actually checking mail does not work.

Also, my MacBook Mountain Lion mail, with the same settings, is getting gmail via IMAP just fine.

I should also note that I can send mail without an issue.

John Rivard - When you setup your account, did you set it up by going to "Add Account" and then "Gmail" or "Other?" Can you double check your settings and make sure you're connecting to "imap.gmail.com" since "imap.google.com" isn't the supported server name.

SonaD, I have also started getting the same message on my iPhone 4S (iOS6) starting 10/9 at 5:23PM Eastern time:

"The mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding..."

This only happens for one of my gmail accounts using Mail.app, not the others, and I can still connect to the account via the web interface.  The account has been working on this phone since January, I haven't changed any settings, and I didn't make any recent upgrades.  I was not affected by the glitch in August.

Sorry, mis-typed, it was imap.GMAIL.com.

I created the account using "other," because I use a validated non-gmail return email address.

I tried re-creating the IMAP account as you recommended trying.

Initially I wasn't successful in creating the account until I used my gmail address as the return address.

Then, after the account was successfully created and validated, I changed the email address portion back to my non-gmail address. This seems to have worked as I am no longer getting the error.

Don't know what changed; the original settings worked fine for a few weeks after the iOS 6 update, but then suddenly stopped working last week.

I am having the same issue on my iPhone4S, running iOS 6. It worked fine (even after iOS upgrade) until last Thursday, Oct. 11 around 1pm EDT. I get the error that the mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding.

I have tried all solutions shown here and on other sites and nothing fixes it. I have recreated the account, tried the Captcha fix, rebooted phone several times, closed all other apps running in background, generated new application-specific password, double-checked all settings, etc. I can log in to Gmail fine in a browser, but nothing has fixed this issue with mail on my iPhone. I can't get any mail that arrived later than 1:19 PM on Oct. 11.

SonaD -- I've had this issue for *months* on both my iPad and iPhone. I had long ago written off this problem as Apple and Google blaming each other and not taking ownership. So glad you are taking ownership!

I have no problem using Gmail via web interface on either my Mac, iPhone, or iPad. The exchangesync works consistently on my iPad. The IMAP doesn't work on either my iPhone or iPad unless I reboot the device. After reboot, it works for a while, then reverts to having this problem again.

I use 2-factor authentication. I have tried regenerating the application-specific passwords; that seems to fix the problem for a short period of time just like rebooting, then the problem comes back.

This has gone on for months! Please help!

Try Changing the imap server from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com.  Turn on two factor authentication in gmail and set up a application specific password for apple mail.  its been working for me for several weeks now.

walksptweb and JohnBarrett - Can you provide me with more details by answering the questions below? The original issue on this thread has been resolved for the significant majority of users that were affected.

1) If you've upgraded to iOS 6, try removing and then recreating the account and that's been doing the trick.
2) Try logging into your account through the web and make sure nothing is wrong with your username, password or general access.
3) Double check your IMAP settings (servers, ports, etc): http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=75726&topic=1668961&ctx=topic
4) Try removing and then recreating the account.
5) Did you recently activity 2-step verification? If so, make sure you're entering the application specific password: http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=185833
6) A good rule of thumb is that if you're having an IMAP issue on only one device or with one email client, then it's most likely settings and not an issue with your account. If you're getting the same error across devices and email clients (Apple Mail, iOS, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc), then it might be something else. If you only use one device/email client, try a second to help narrow down if it's just the settings.

Hi Sona, my wife's ipad recently stopped being able to grab email from the imap.google.com server.  I've downloaded the gmail app and it works fine.

1) I've upgraded to iOS 6 and tried recreating the account.  I won't let me, gives me the same error that it can't find the imap.google.com server.
2) I've logged onto all our gmail accounts on the web and on my iphone.  noting is locked or wrong with our accounts
3) I've checked my imap settings, they are all consistent with your support page (also, none of them should have changed, it worked fine as of 9am this morning.  now it's stopped working)
4) Tried removing and recreating the account, same "cannot find imap.google.com"
5) i just tried enabling and disabling the 2 step verification.  No change
6) all of our emails work fine on my iphone.  I've even wiped and restored my ipad to yesterday's backup.  still no luck getting access to gmail via the ipad email app.  please help! :-/

If you still have an issue with your IMAP connection, please feel free to start a new post. It will help if you an also include the following information so the community can help you troubleshoot.

I have the exactly the same problem.  
I've been accessing G-mail from my iPad for many months and out of the blue it stopped working.

I tried the UnCaptcha thing and removing and adding the account back in, but to no avail.  I can access gmail via Safari on the iPad and I can access it OK using the nasty Gmail app.

Very weird.

I was accessing my Gmail accounts since 3 years on same phone. it never had problem before.

It started giving me problem since this morning.

Even I can not access gmail from Safari browser inside the phone.

However, I can access it using my PC with all the browsers. any help will be appreciated.

This appears to be more than an isolated issue. There are a few threads going on it now, and all are unable to connect and have tried a number of different methods to fix and trace the issue, all to no avail. It appears to be a Gmail issue either with specific accounts or with a block of accounts.

Has Google acknowledged the problem and offered any solutions? Should I make an appointment at the Apple Store with a Genius? or just wait (and hope) Google resolves whatever issue there is. In the meantime I don't get to receive emails on my phone?

Don't know if google has acknowledged or not...but I just made an appointment at the apple store.  Having the problem with both my phone and ipad.  Will advise what I learn.  My appt is at 3:10 today.

Same here. I have 2 iPhones and 2 iPads and none of them can access Gmail anymore. I keep getting the pop-up "The server imap.gmail.com is not responding. Please check settings..." I have tried troubleshooting...the captcha trick...everything...NOTHING works...

It was working last night. Of course, Google Help is NO help and there are no updates from Google. They claim on the App Status indicator that Gmail is working fine.

Exact same problem here.  I've tried the captcha unlock, deleting and readding the account.  Nothing helps.  Has anyone figured anything out?

Hi everyone, 

We're looking into the issue. In the meantime you can login to Gmail through your phone or tablet's browser. For iOS users, you can also download the Gmail application as an alternative in the interim.

We'll post as soon as we have more to share.

Ok...but are you a google person?  Hoping you are.  Very frustrating and a huge time waster not to be able to communicate directly with a google person when this kind of thing happens. Lost most of my day trying to figure this out.  Couple hours reading through all these various "fixes" plus a couple hours with the Apple support person...thankfully at least they provide some help and a trip to the Apple store to have someone look at the situation in person.  Horrible.  Please advise when this will be fixed.  The ability to receive email in an easy to read format...not the ridiculous gmail format...is integral to my business.

I agree. I'm currently using the iPad app and it's pretty nasty. I'm thinking of uninstalling it and just using Safari.

Thanks for the info I'm suffering the same issue on multiple devices. Would it have anything to do with the 2-Step verification process that is now being pushed?
