|Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||kjravenw||5/4/09 10:59 AM|
Lately, the last 3-4 weeks of messages suddenly disappear from my Inbox, although they remain in All Mail, or I can find them under their respective lables. This is the 3rd time this has happened in as many months. I don't import mail from IMAP or POP Mail servers ... Gmail is Gmail for me. I do use filters (for labeling only). I don't have any kind of "Message Forwarding" set up.
I keep my Inbox pretty well cleaned out ... rarely do I have in excess of 200 messages, since I make good use of labels and archiving messages that I want to keep.
I'm glad I'm not losing my messages entirely, but this is frustrating to deal with.
What could be going on?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||gobbly||5/4/09 3:35 PM|
I am having this exact same issue. Started within the last month, and today is the third or fourth time it's happened. I have no labels, no rules, pop and imap is disabled. I cannot find any cause of this at all, and would love an answer, even if it's just a bug, I'd feel better knowing it's not something else (like maybe someone else accessing my mail?).
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||cnewell329||5/7/09 9:16 AM|
I am also having the exact issue. Over the past year this has happened several times. Then it is ok for awhile and then they disappear again. All the messages are in All Mail as with the previous posters but it is annoying and I would like to find the cause.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||SN||5/7/09 9:43 AM|
Try checking over all your filters with labels don't have "Skip the Inbox (Archive it)" or Delete it option.
Check make sure disabled POP/IMAP.
If you've enabled forwarding in your account, ensure that you have not selected archive Gmail's copy or delete Gmail's copy in your forwarding options.
Make sure after checking that the save changes is selected at bottom.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||gobbly||5/7/09 10:14 AM|
to reiterate, I have no lables, no rules, pop and imap are disabled. To add to this, I have no email forwarding. There is absolutely nothing in the options that should cause this. It is most certainly something on the gmail end, as it happens when my PC is powered down and the last visitors IP address is mine, and my router has not lost its IP in this time, nor does the router show any connections in that time period.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||SN||5/7/09 10:46 AM|
Another possibility might be that your account was compromised with a virus, somehow. Might be best to disconnect from computer run full virus scan; if virus found; resolve all issues; log back in change password and security settings. I am aware of your settings. If this happened to me and I had the same settings as you I would try and click the appropriate settings to shake things loose. I hope it is not a bug but I doubt Gmail is the culprit since your account has worked fine before.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||5/7/09 11:20 AM|
Let's get one thing straight - and that's Archive.
Archive does just one thing - and one thing only! That is it removes the Inbox label.
It doesn't put your e-mail "anywhere", since every message you receive or send goes into your mailbox - and the view of your mailbox you see is known as All Mail. You simply DON'T have any other area of storage.
Gmail is a BIG SQL database and with your 7GB+ quota of storage, you get one 'record' in the database records - that is what 'All Mail' is.
When a message is delivered to Google's e-mail service for you, it's first scanned for malware, then it's run through the spam-detection algorithms - when the decision is made whether it's labelled as Spam or Inbox.
Then any filters activate when you open your mailbox: if you have filters which apply labels or anything else, there's always the possibility that they mis-operate, and end up removing the inbox label. For that reason they remain in your mailbox, but now have no label. That's perhaps why you can see them in All Mail but nowhere else. Gmail, because it is a database, only wants to keep one copy of any message, so you can apply lot of labels (up to 20 per message/conversation) which means whenever a search is operated then you get to see the results for those searches.
That's what happens with Inbox, when you open your Gmail. It (Gmail) quickly issues a search in All Mail for messages which carry the Inbox label: messages which don't, won't therefore show!
The same goes for all those 'labels' under Compose Mail - they're really initiators for searches (in All Mail) for messages bearing those labels - Inbox, Stars, Chat, Sent Mail, Spam or trash (Bin) labels as appropriate.
The Spam and trash labels are slightly different, in that they don't exhibit in the All Mail display. And the Sent Mail label is also slightly different in that you can't remove it from Sent Mail. You can have other labels added, but you can't remove the Sent label itself.
Try this yourself: click on the Bin (trash) label, and look at what it shows in the Search box: never mind what it shows in the viewer pane!
I think what's perhaps happening in your cases is that some of your messages are being attached to Conversations which have previously been archived.
I should add that the situation regards conversations and labels is that the first message in a conversation is the one that bears the label. None of the subsequent messages do - they're all attached to that one message, and that's the one that carries the label.
Hopefully, you'll now appreciate rather more what the effect of archive is: if you archive any message without applying another label, then it resides in All Mail, but you have no ready label to search for it. You HAVE to search and apply one or more of your own labels.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||gobbly||5/7/09 12:00 PM|
Though this might be the case for some of the previous posts, I do not believe it is the case in my situation. First, my PC was powered down at the time this happened. I also run an industry standard anti-virus. To top it off, this PC is my "safe box" meaning it is the only PC I access gmail though, and I restrict my access from this PC to my bank website and gmail (I have another PC I use to access any other sites, and I have never accessed gmail or my banking website from this less secure PC). Yes, I am rather anal about security. I have also taken all prudent steps to ensure that hardware on my end has not been compromised, including analyzing my traffic logs.
To expand a little on the archive suggestion, yes, this is what is happening, but it is not something I have instigated. I held a position for 2 years in an ISP that is a google partner. My position entailed supporting gmail. I spent the vast majority of my time educating users on filters, labels, pop/imap support, and archiving. So I am very familiar with these features. I have had my gmail account since early beta, and I can't recall having ever archived anything on this account (my memory can be hazy past 3 years or so, but I know I haven't archived anything in the last 2 years). There is a small possibility that a few conversations from 2+ years ago might have been archived, and hence propagate to children, however, we are talking about over 3000 emails which have been archived, many of them from sources that didn't even exist more than 2 years ago.
It's not a mission critical issue, I could relabel them, etc, but there is something going on here. All indications are that this issue is occurring on the server end, and a quick search reveals that this type of issue is being reported much more regularly in the past few months by other users, more so than seems reasonable to chalk it all up to user error.
I'm sure the above suggestions will help clear up a number of issue that other uses might be having though :)
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||pbruos||5/7/09 1:48 PM|
I just had this happen to me AGAIN. I too have had this happen 3 times no in last approx. 4 months. I did find an article on pcworld.com but it did not have a solution. What is GMAIL doing about this and how can the problem be reported directly to them.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||kjravenw||5/8/09 6:15 AM|
Thank you, <gobbly>! I, too, take extreme security measures, and have checked all my filters (which only add labels; none enable any other action like archive, forward, nothing that enables an actual action on my emails). I have talked the issue over wtih several system administrators, and they concur that this must be an internal Google issue, and I would like to know how problems like this can be directly reported to the Gmail team. The have a wonderful service, overall, and I'd like to see this non-mission critical glitch cleared up. It seems to be occuring with increasing frequency and I really don't want to change email services if I don't have to.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||lara233||5/17/09 1:36 PM|
This is happening to me too. Very frustrating. It only started happening in the last month. At least it makes me move my messages out of my inbox more quickly. An interesting sidenote - the messages that I retrieved and put in my Inbox by labeling them "Inbox" have stayed. So I think JohnW2 is on to something. Basically, the default Inbox label appears to be disappearing. I have never archived anything - Gmail is spontaneously cleaning my inbox for me.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Tony G||5/21/09 10:01 AM|
Please see my earlier post in "Loading Gmail" - this is a Gmail recurring problem over two years, possibly longer:
A few days ago I opened my Vista Windows mail that is already configured with Gmail. I had over 600 messages in my inbox. Yesterday I re-opened and there were 300 messages. Today there are about 400 messages. I have logged in through the web portal and the messages are actually on Gmail, but for some reason the disappear and reappear on Windows Mail. Any views/ideas?
Well, guess what! We're now back to 800 messages - pretty much the same as the web portal! I literally saw the whole list of emails flickering and downloading, appeaaring and disappearing in front of my eyes.
Well, that's what I thought... For about a minute, everything was gone. I had zero messages in my inbox. Now back to a couple of hundred. Checking back in the email list, there are whole "lumps" of weeks that are missing from the download.
Who do we blame? Gmail and their frequent outage? Microsoft and Vista's Windows Mail? And most importantly how do we fix this? Anyone else had the same issue?
I can now confirm that, unfortunately, this is a Gmail issue, rather than a Vista/Windows mail issue. A specific email disappeared from my Windows Mail Inbox (in front of my eyes), and I immediately checked the web portal. The message had disappeared from the Gmail inbox as well. The Windows Mail simply looks at Gmail and syncronizes with whatever is in Gmail, hence the problem is with the source.
Strangely, the message is still in the All-Mail folder of Gmail.
I have now checked the web and I understand that this is a recurringproblem with Gmail over the last 2 years. Somehow the messages reappear (at some point!!!) but this is hardly reassuring. Everyone's views are welcome.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||ryan_d_p||5/23/09 8:48 AM|
Me too! I first noticed this about 2 months ago. My inbox messages just disappear. The first few times, I was questioning my memory - if I had already archived them. But it keeps happening. Just yesterday, I had just four messages in my inbox. I walk away from my machine for two hours, come back and they're all gone and archived!
This is very frustrating since I do use gmail for some business communication. How much mail have I missed that I am not aware of? Side note: I wish Google would release one stable version without the "beta" label. I mean, gmail is awesome. I am a business owner and I need it for my business. Enough years of hiding behind a "beta" label. Why not charge a subscription rate for a final RTM version? Mission critical folks like me would buy it! Go capitalism!
Is there a bug filed on this? Has a google engineer responded to this? If so, please forward me the pointer to it.

Anyone from Gmail reading this?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Monkminder||5/25/09 11:28 AM|
Happening here too for the past 2 months. Checked mail this morning...8 messages in my Inbox. Checked 2 hours later...none in my Inbox. All had been moved to my Archived messages. They are not disappearing, but they are being relabled and relocated.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||kevinllane||5/26/09 6:32 AM|
Helloooooo anyone at Gmail!!!! I just experienced the same problem yesterday. I have 3 emails in my account left from Feb '09, and the other 2000-some emails disappeared. Everything looks like it's still in All Mail. This morning new messages download properly into my Inbox, but the disappearance act has not corrected itself, and I can't find anywhere to get Google Gmail Help.
Now, I'm researching the problem, only to find out it's very common, and has been for a couple of years, and Gmail's done nothing about it. I literally cannot find a Gmail administrator comment anywhere in these Help postings. It looks like I'll be swtiching to MobileMe.

Hi everyone. Thanks for your reports; we're looking into this issue. Because of the level of detail we'll need from you to investigate further, we'll be contacting some of you via email rather than troubleshooting on this thread. Thanks for your patience while we work on it.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||coopnik||5/27/09 7:54 PM|
I am also having the exact same problem. What is the solution?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||kjravenw||5/27/09 8:36 PM|
I'm glad to finally see a response from Google ... it gives me hope! I was about to dump my Gmail altogether, as this problem has been happening with ever-increasing frequency. It is now complicated by some of my messages evaporating altogether ... gone, gone, into the ether never to be seen again! So far, nothing mission critical, but all my business email is conducted via this web address. I may have to establish a new address for business at some other mail server that is more reliable. I have never had this problem in my windowslive accounts (hotmail).
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||rower85||5/27/09 10:48 PM|
Same happened to me, ever email got the "inbox" label taken away, from date to today until 2 of feb - 07
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||salah.himmo||5/28/09 11:09 AM|
This is the 3rd time it happens to me this year, all the messages in the Inbox cleared between today and May 7th. Good thing All mail has this, this could be an issue that can cause reliability issue. Did not have those issues last year, I am not sure what is going on.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||jfichaud||5/28/09 10:20 PM|
same issue here, this is the first time I noticed, I had actually been cleaning out some of my messages through Apple Mail via IMAP, and then I came back to my computer and realized I only had messages in my google inbox from the last week when I know I should have many more, went from nearly 100 to only 25 in my inbox. Whats going on?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||vancouver girl||5/29/09 12:16 AM|
I guess I am having the same issue? All of my 'INBOX' MAIL MESSAGES have disappeared. I do not know if they were ever received in the 'INBOX' in the first place.
I have tried sending myself a message from another mail carrier to my gmail address and never show as received in my 'IN BOX'. However when I search for mail by clicking on the 'SEARCH MAIL' button all 'INBOX' mail appears in here. I find it very frustrating.
I gather it is more or less related to what has been said by everyone else -- Please, GMAIL folks find the problem and try and fix it!!!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Vajra mati||5/29/09 4:27 PM|
I have the same problem some mail skips the in box (no filters, no forwarding, no pop, only imap)
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Michelle||5/29/09 4:49 PM|
It's very important that anyone seeing this behavior check their filter settings first. There are a lot of completely correct explanations for this issue.
I know some of you don't use filters at all, but for those who do, that's your first step.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||vancouver girl||5/29/09 6:01 PM|
I don't have an answer but all of a sudden this afternoon my gmail started working properly again! I did not do one thing to make it work....I hope it stays this way forever!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||bluerainbow||6/1/09 12:07 PM|
I've been having this problem too over the last couple of weeks. I see a message in my inbox and click on it - and as often as not the message just instantly disappears - and ....No, it does not end up in my Trash box, I do not have filters set up and I use the latest high quality antivirus software. There's no doubt about it - this is DEFINITELY a problem with Gmail itself - whatever lame excuses the employees might come up with as to how WE did something ourselves to cause this to happen. This is beginning to affect my business, and I'm going to have to look for another (better) email supplier.

Same problem here. Just started this week. The problem seems wide-spread and growing...
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Joshua||6/2/09 9:12 AM|

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||casualt||6/3/09 1:18 PM|
Same issue as well happens periodically over the last few weeks.
double checked filters, they are fine.
emails are magically getting archived before I even touch them (from web, or from pop)...
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||meredithwil||6/4/09 11:46 AM|
I am having this same problem. Today I find that all I have is ALL MAIL. Nothing in INBOX anymore. I have been around since early on in GMail history. I never saw this before. Have done disable of all Labs and have run full virus scan.
GNotifier keeps coming up with 84 messages. These are messages I have already opened and archived.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||meredithwil||6/4/09 12:51 PM|
Now my problem has expanded. All my Archived mail is showing up in another gmail box which I never use! It is a different address and password. How on earth did these 2 email sites get crossed?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||vancouver girl||6/4/09 1:17 PM|
I have no idea what is happening -- but what I do know is that there is a problem with G-MAIL that they choose not to respond to, which I find most aggravating!!!!! They seem to think that everyone that has a problem is either computer illiterate or that it is not their problem. They won't think that as this problem grows and folks start switching to another e-mail carrier!!!!!!!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||meredithwil||6/4/09 2:38 PM|
Please disregard my problem being expanded. That was all my fault.
However, the original problem, like all others on this page still exists without any resolution.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||wrkn4u||6/5/09 9:39 AM|
This is an ongoing problem. I went to the extreme and reinstalled the operation system. This started several months ago and have had 50 messages in my INBOX and the next glance, just moments later, a new mail arrives and everything else had disappeared. It has been approximately a month and last night bling.... the INBOX label had been removed. At first I thought it was only because I left GMAIL up. But looking on the history, it appears to occur when not being access also.
It is my opinion that GOOGLE made some type of change last night. When I visit GOOGLE finance today, the graphing is missing also. Now GOOGLE needs to take this seriously and understand the ripple effect and provide a resolution.
During the time to type this message, it happened again.... the mystery continues!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||genwarner||6/5/09 1:59 PM|
This happens to me an extreme way-- anywhere between 1 and 15 times a DAY my entire inbox is marked as read and moved to all mail. I get about 100-200 messages a day for business reasons and this makes it very hard to sort through and impossible to use on my iPhone. I'm going to have to switch to yahoo soon because I do need mobile access to my email all day.
This is not a labeling problem. I do sue labels but I am 100% sure they are being used correctly. I need to use labels to help sort my mail. I have been using lebls since they started and thisd has only been happening in the past 2 months.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||lara233||6/10/09 9:47 PM|
The problem is getting worse. They used to just disappear occasionally after I had seen them and read them and now they're disappearing before I even know they're there. I have really enjoyed Gmail but I, too, am considering switching if it isn't resolved soon. I did get an e-mail from a Google person in regards to this matter so it sounds like they're trying to do something.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Joshua||6/11/09 6:18 AM|
I'll repeat again: people have reported many different problems in this thread, which makes it impossible to solve any particular problem.
If you need help with a problem, start a new thread clearly explaining exactly what you are seeing.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Michelle||6/11/09 3:18 PM|
As Joshua mentioned, there's clearly a few different things being reported here. Before going any further, please check your Forwarding and POP settings (instructions below) - a number of the cases we've looked into are caused by the reporter's own settings, not any problem with Gmail.
To check your settings:
1. Sign in to Gmail.
2. Click 'Settings' in the upper right corner.
3. Click 'Forwarding and POP/IMAP'.
4. Look in each section of this settings page to see if anything is enabled that shouldn't be. For example:
- In 'Forwarding', there's an option to forward a copy of incoming mail and archive it in Gmail.
- In 'POP Download', there are options to enable POP and archive message.
- In 'IMAP Access', there's an option to enable IMAP.
5. If you aren't currently using these features, disable them by selecting the appropriate radio button in each section.
6. Save your changes at the bottom of the settings section.
If you're still seeing weird behavior after that, we'll look into it.
If these settings were enabled and you're confident you didn't do it, see the article below for some security measures to take.

I've checked all of my settings, as suggested, but I still can't see mail in my inbox using the standard view; I can see them in the html view. I have another gmail account that is NOT having this problem. I compared the settings between the two accounts and found no differences.

@Kjravenw and @Gobbly,
I would like to know if either of you have had any resolution from your issues yet? If so did what were the fixes, if not yet what is your current status?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||soapboxjul||6/19/09 12:37 PM|
I discovered that I can view the mail in my inbox, when I switch it to the older version. My other google account works correctly in both the older and the newer versions.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||tigergirl||6/19/09 12:59 PM|
If you upgraded to the new version of gmail, this is part of the upgrade. you can now label messages to color-code them, but you cannot move them to separate folders. If you want this feature back, click on the link in the top right to go back to the older version of gmail.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||soapboxjul||6/19/09 1:21 PM|
That's not the issue. The issue is that I can't see my mail in my inbox using the new version. The problem exist with one email account, but not the other. They are both using the new version (no they are not linked together).

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||StickneyWI3||6/26/09 1:38 PM|
First off, I don't have any filters on. I opened my mail this morning and lots of messages that I'd prefer to still be there were all gone. Instead, four messages from one person spread over one year were in the account and marked as unread. Finally, I opened my account at a location that keeps strong content protections on the network and checks for viruses all the time.

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||matthurst||7/10/09 4:03 AM|
I've had the same thing on my Apps account (though not on my normal Gmail account, which has the same settings) - some incoming emails seem to have their Inbox tag stripped off so they're ForArchive and All Mail instead (I also access Gmail using Apple Mail, and I use that to see what tags applied). I can see them in All Mail, but not anywhere else.
Checked off my settings, filters etc. as per Michelle's instructions, but it's still happening. I appreciate Google being responsive on this, as it's going to mean me shifting to another email provider if it's not sorted out soon.
SLIGHTLY OFF TOPIC BUT... there's no instructions I can find on Google for how to extract your apps setting from Google if you want to leave. I could understand a nasty evil big corporation doing this to stop people leaving, but Google's ethical stance is surely going to mean they'll make it just as easy for people to leave as sign up, isn't it?

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||RGabrielli||7/27/09 5:55 AM|
The same thing happened to me. I do not have any filters or pop or imap enabled. Messages that were in my inbox yesterday are not there today. This did not happen to all my messages, only random (that only gmail may see a pattern). They are visible in 'All Mail'. I had messages from the same sender in my inbox and a few were removed and a few were left alone.
Michelle (employee) stated on 5/27 that this was being researched. Today is 7/27. Is there any resolution? Maybe they should put the beta logo back on...this never happened to me in beta.

I have the same issue since I start to use IMAP and I checked my setting many many times....Occasionally inbox label removed and mail shows up in "All Mail", if I labeled an e-mail with another label while it is in inbox, it stays in inbox...It is clearly a gmail bug...
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||BensonBot||8/23/09 12:37 PM|
I, also, just set up my GMail from POP to IMAP, and had all but the past month's emails disappear. Since I leave everything in my Inbox (I prefer it that way), I don't even have All Mail showing...Hence, I thought all my email had vanished. ((Panic)) It sounds as though it's an IMAP issue -- I have to use IMAP, however, since I'm now using two computers. I'm leery to go through pages and pages and pages of (now) Archived email and send it to the Inbox, if this is just going to happen more.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Calion||8/27/09 10:29 PM|
Alright, I'm having the exact same issue, and the inbox label is being stripped off right before my eyes. I will send myself an email. It will show up in the Inbox. When I click on another label ("starred" for instance), the new message count in the Inbox falls to zero, and when I go back to the Inbox, the message has vanished. It still exists, and shows up in the All folder. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON??? This is simply not okay. I've had months of messages vanish this way and never show up in Apple Mail. Fix this. Now. Please.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||TheDaniel||9/3/09 11:12 PM|
Yeah! I had the same, or a similar problem just a few moments ago.
I'm using gmail with Thunderbird via IMAP. There are no filters/labels set in either the Gmail webinterface or Thunderbird. Since yesterday the emails dissapear from Inbox right on access. When I launch Thunderbird new mail is shown for a few seconds an dissappears right before my eyes.
Not a good thing and supposedly bug. The mail is still, unread, under all mail, but it's bad, if someone doesn't react to important messages, because new mails mystically disappear.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||TheDaniel||9/3/09 11:26 PM|
Clearly a issue with IMAP. I can replicate this behavior, happens only to messages that are form yesterday and newer.
If I move messages, via webinterface, into the inbox, the stay there. On IMAP access the inbox label is automatically removed and the messages seem to disappear right before my eyes. As said before, there are no filters set in either Thunderbird or the webinterface. Better yet, if Thunderbird stays open, a IMAP session is active and I use the webinterface to move said mails into inbox there's the same issue. Thunderbird shows the move mail for a second in inbox, then it disappears again.
Please look into this issue. Happens to all mails since 9/3/09.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Joshua||9/4/09 5:54 AM|
@TheD: Although you say you don't have any filters in Thunderbird, I suggest checking again. This behavior really looks to me like an action of your IMAP client, and not an action from the server side. In addition to the regular filters, check your Thunderbird junk mail filter settings. You should probably turn off this filter when using gmail.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||leo1969||9/4/09 7:49 AM|
The same problem as well. No email forwarding at all. Funny part is that I've started popping a few weeks ago and it worked just fine, but for a about3 days my email comes to 'All Mail' folder. HELP.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||TheDaniel||9/4/09 8:34 AM|
Thanks for the advice, Joshua.
I checked again. While the junk filter is used for other accounts it is and was turned off for gmail. This behavior, the disappearing inbox messages, happens since about yesterday, while I haven't changed any settings in Thunderbird, or the webinterface, for weeks.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||TheDaniel||9/4/09 8:52 AM|
Found the culprit. Since a few day I'm using NOD32 as AV-scanner. It doesn't seem possible, that NOD32 scans the ssl-secured connection, but somehow it tries to tamper with the emails, after they are received. Pretty idiotic, if you ask me.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Calion||9/7/09 8:56 AM|
Okay, this can't be an issue with my email client, because this happens whether or not it's open or has been run recently. There are NO settings I have which could conceiveably have caused this. This is a bug in Gmail. Please fix or help!!!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Joshua||9/7/09 11:51 AM|
@Calion: Go to gmail's settings, then forwarding and pop/imap and make sure everything there is turned off. Also check the last account activity: details link at the bottom of your inbox to see if there are accesses from anywhere other than your web browser. There really aren't any explanations for email appearing in your inbox and then suddenly disappearing other than the intervention of another mail client of some sort.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||ktakayama||9/7/09 12:21 PM|
Like many others, I too was shocked this morning when my inbox that usually house about 200 messages, had only about 5, a couple from way back, and not all of the stuff from today. I've turned off IMAP/POP; and I have no destructive filters. Shocked that I've "lost" my mail. Also, since I can't seem to find "All Mail" the "new version" of Gmail I'm disappointed to have to revert back.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Joshua||9/7/09 12:37 PM|
"All Mail" may be hidden under the more link under your label list. You can show it permanently by going to settings, then labels.
If you can't find mail, the place to start is this troubleshooter:
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||lee.edmond||9/8/09 4:37 PM|

same thing happening to me last 4 days. I see email one minute - gone the next. very frustrating. I have no filters or anything special HOW do I find the emails there are at least 7 that have "disappeared" no where in gmail, not in all mail not in trash nowhere to be found.. This is totally unsat. Our emails are our lines of communication-- any help in finding old emails that disappeared!! otherwise I will have to change accts - this is not good!!!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||eichholz||9/8/09 9:18 PM|
I too lost about 500 emails that I kept in my inbox, and they were not archived automatically like I at first suspected. They are in fact gone as far as I can tell, never to be seen again. It happened late July and I thought eventually they would just show back up one day, but they have not. I repeat, they are not in ALL MAIL. The other thing is, I got a blackberry a few weeks before this happened so I can't help but think they are linked. If I have a blackberry, should I still turn off the POP/IMAP settings if they are turned on? Wasn't sure if it would stop emails going to my mobile device. Please help if you can!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||SN||9/8/09 10:07 PM|
Food for thought:
If I already provided the suggestions/answers, and people still say they have a problem, there is nothing else to do except use my super scroll (click my mouse wheel-move mouse cursor) to read an ever expanding thread of people stating they have a problem and never providing feedback to answers already provided, sometimes answers are repeated multiple times in this thread, and still no feedback that those answers were ever read.
If someone answer someone's suggestion with: I have a problem; oh well. If you answer someone's suggestion and the response e.g., Thank you for the that, but everything you stated I tried and I am using that with this set-up and here is all my details, got any more suggestions? Someone is practically guaranteed to read your feedback and be better equipped to provide a quick resolution.
Since so many might hereafter provide feedback I am hoping to see, after reading some suggestions/answers on this thread, I believe one person who receive's resolution, most likely, will be the resolution for others as well when reading this thread again and hopefully we can start seeing some people provide positive feedback about what they read, tried and worked for them, emerge in this thread. Please stay on topic to original poster Kjravenw.

Forwarded email GoogleApps->GoogleApps dropping without Inbox label and looking like "lost mail"
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||ygs1||9/17/09 7:33 AM|
This started happening to me yesterday. All my emails gone from my inbox and moved to all mail. I just recently got a new blackberry and downloaded gmail on this blackberry (which I had done on my prior blackberry and with no problem). Then the messages started disappearing. Perhaps it has something to do with the blackberry?
Please, google employee, help!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Joshua||9/17/09 9:13 AM|
Yes, @julgerts, it probably has something to do with your blackberry. Go to your gmail settings under Forwarding & POP/IMAP and make sure you haven't configured gmail to archive downloaded messages. Then go to your blackberry and make sure it isn't configured to delete or archive messages.

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||vaughn.h||10/9/09 12:54 PM|
I am having the same inbox problems.
I have no filters, no forwarding, or labels set up
POP is disabled and I am using IMAP with mac mail.
My problem is in Mac mail I can see by the message counter that I have new unread mail but when I go to "MAILBOXES" then the inbox for Gmail it is empty.
If I go to "All Mail" I can see the new unread messages mixed in with all of the "Sent", "Starred', "Junk" etc. messages and I have to figure out which are the new unread messages.
Can someone from Google help with this?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||SN||10/9/09 2:36 PM|
Vaughn.h, I am not from Google, but based on you explanation, probably, clearing cache, cookies, restart browser might fix a ghost indication. Also, consider, the new messages might be there listed under 'inbox' label but on a different 'inbox' page; try typing in search field in:inbox is:unread type 'search mail' tab. Reply back whether fixes or not :)
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||gillento||10/10/09 5:01 AM|
I have a similar problem.
Please let me first state that I am using Apple Mail 4.1 and the iPhone 3G, all using IMAP.
For a few days now, labeled emails go directly to the Bin folder and do not show in neither the Inbox nor in the labeled folder nor All mail.
I did not change any settings before this started to happen.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||SN||10/10/09 8:18 AM|
Gillento, I presume there is a setting of some sort, either on the email client software or phone that might cause the problem. Best to inquire about mobile phone questions in the Google mobile phone help forum (see reference) where helpers there are more familiar with using mobile phones and others mobile users can benefit from any fixes too :)

I just had two days of hell with this type of problem. I've had 102 labels that have kept my email over the last 3 years. About 32,000 emails are in those label folders. Each day the folders would dissappear, just vanish. The emails appear to be the the "all mail" folder, but the labels and all the emails in the labels just vanished. I changed passwords after the first day to make sure someone was not in the account. What happened to all my labels and folders?????????
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||SN||10/22/09 8:58 PM|
Surfbits, If you notice blatant compromise to your Gmail account, then have to ensure to get your computer secure again (see references) to prevent further compromise, i.e., firstly, running full anti-virus software on your computer; resolve all problems, and secondly, change all your Gmail security information, check every Gmail setting, features, filters, POP etc to prevent further compromise to your Gmail.

WOW, all these complaints over the past months, just like mine, & the problem still isn't fixed internally! What does that say for Gmail? Not good PR to someone like me who just joined & already have this "inbox"/"all mail" problem after only a week!
Why did it function correctly at first, then not continue to?

Hi--I also have this problem--it has always been this way, but I've found that in the inbox if you search for something specific, it will come up. I used to read my Gmail via Outlook so it wasn't a problem. Now I got a new computer that doesn't have outlook I'm trying to use Windows Live Mail, and it seems to be completely arbitrary whether I get a message or not, and where it comes to. If the Google folks are going to fix and explain what's wrong, how do we get on a list to be contacted?

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||clacks||1/3/10 1:53 PM|
I've had similar problems over the past approx 2 months. Any new ''''mail in the inbox that hasn't been read within 1-2 hours would only be visible in All Mail.
I just use Gmail with the web interface and with my Motorola Droid phone. Yesterday, since turning off IMAP in Gmail's settings I've had no such problems. All mail is appearing and staying where it should.
I haven't used Outlook or Thunderbird in quite some time so turning off IMAP is no big deal for me. Anyway it's not a perfect solution but one that I'm happy enough to live with. Your mileage may vary..
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||KristaatSummit||1/27/10 4:46 PM|
Our school just experienced this problem of mail showing up if you click "all" but not in the inbox. This happened as very important email was not found in the inbox from a week ago and only found when we did a search or clicked "All". Some email from that day was in the Inbox and others were not.
This could cause our administrators to stop using Gmail.

The same issue happened to me starting yesterday.
I have checked IMAP,forwarding, and my POP are all disabled.
I have not manually done anything to my gmail account, and I have an IPhone that has my gmail account.
I need help, with this as soon as possible. I can find everything in my "All Mail" but nothing in my inbox besides two older messages.
Please help, or if there is anyway you could reset my account to fix the problem I'd be willing to do so.
I have my school email forwarded to this account and i'm very concerned.
Unlike this spontaneously happening, like some of the other users, mine is consistent and has been happening every time I receive an email.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||2/7/10 10:09 AM|
"Something" is causing the messages in your accounts to lose the 'inbox' label, which is why they are not showing when you open up.
EVERY message in your mailbox is always stored in the same place - it's that 7GB+ storage quota (which is allocated to each account holder) on Google's servers. You get to see the (entire) contents of that store when you see (the results of a search for) 'All Mail'.
In Meagan's case I'm almost certain this is triggered by the use of the iPhone on that account. But without your co-operation it's next to impossible to prove!

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Asha'man||2/18/10 6:18 AM|
Fixed my problem (mail kept disappearing in gmail from the Inbox and could only be found in All Mail). In Kmail on linux, I had anti-virus and anti-spam set up and by deleting them mail started to stay in my inbox.
If you have the same problem, it may be that your email client started using anti-virus and/or anti spam on its own or you set it up and forgot about it. Just disable it, and the problem should be fixed.
This is NOT a problem on google's side.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||noinbox||2/18/10 6:56 AM|
My messages started to stay in my inbox after doing NOTHING. Others have posted in the past that their mail spontaneously returned to their inbox as well. Not sure you can say it is not on google's side. Perhaps your mail would have returned to the inbox any way as others have experienced.

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||ricky rescue||3/6/10 11:40 AM|
I believe Mr. Soto is on to something here... This issue started with me this morning. [went through most of the discussion on this thread before opening my big mouth]. I am a IT, consider myself at a intermediate level, maybe... I noticed that all of the "inbox" messages I had last night, that are not showing up in the inbox today, DO NOT have a label on them stating "inbox". So while in All Mail, I marked one of the messages without an "Inbox" label that was in the inbox last night, and moved it to the inbox. Wha La!!! It's in the inbox now... Sorry to disagree with anyone saying that it is not a Google issue. With what I just discovered, I believe shows that Google is having an issue with loosing labeling capabilities on messages to be directed to the inbox. Thank goodness none of us lost our messages, right??? So, how do we go about letting Google Staff know of what I discovered here. Can anyone help on this issue?? Really appreciate it... ricky
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||anthonyg2003||3/11/10 9:10 PM|
Had this same problem today. Important email showed up on my Droid phone, but when I accessed gmail through my computer, it was not there.... I finally searched for the email and found it... it did not have an inbox label. I do not have mail forwarding set up.
How did the email lose (or never had) its inbox label??? A very big issue if you ask me, Google... how can people trust their gmail account if emails arbitrarily don't show up in your inbox? If it hadn't been for my Droid phone, I never would have gotten my very important audit email. And even if the IMAP setup on my account caused it.. well, that's a very common configuration nowadays, so it needs to be addressed. "Turn off your IMAP" is not a viable resolution. Besides, looks like plenty of people who do not use IMAP are having this problem too.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||vanegere||3/12/10 12:52 PM|
I have had to go through and find my inbox messages that had the inbox label taken off; and within an hour, they were once again archived with the inbox label removed. This is crazy--I deal with this periodically, particularly after checking messages on my Blackberry (but not consistently).
In addition, I put stars on just in case this happens--sometimes the stars stay on and I can easily find the missing messages in my starred mail; more often, the stars and all other labels are removed, making it really difficult to find them. Usually, if both older messages with stars/labels are in the inbox, and there are new messages as well, only the older messages are archived out of the inbox.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||3/13/10 6:39 AM|
In most instances of labels "disappearing", you'll find mobile phone usage is occurring!
Whether the disappearance is as a result of the IMAP function - or otherwise - has not been determined.

Very Intriguing JohnW2... I to, as well as others on this 3rd rock, utilizes my phone to access my gmail.. So if this theory is of significant value, how do we go about approaching Google staff with this. I see you are a "Top Contributor" on this thread. I, am just a little wee "Level 1", and am ignorant to this... Would enjoy your input. [by the way, none of my labels have returned, so I still have to be in "all mail" mode to operate my gmail like I'm used to...]
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||3/14/10 4:24 AM|
@ ricky rescue - try, for a reasonable period of time, to NOT access your Gmail using the phone, and see whether your messages will then show in the inbox display. Monitor your account using a PC only.
There is no Tech Support for users of Google's free services, so you'll have to hope we can get their attention when we've found the cause - so they can fix the matter.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||noinbox||3/14/10 9:01 PM|
I was NOT yet accessing my email via phone at the time my messages disappeared from my inbox and only showed up in ALL MAIL. I don't think it is an accurate cause/contributor the the missing email issue.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||3/15/10 5:41 AM|
@ noinbox - my last reply was made to the posting by ricky rescue, denoted by the use of @ ricky rescue.
This response is to you (noinbox), again denoted by the use of @ noinbox.
Certainly the issue IS happening on Google's servers - that's NOT what I'm trying to say. It's being caused by *something* occurring in your accounts that is causing the label to be lost/removed. Perhaps - for some - it is being caused by the use of a phone through IMAP: perhaps, for others, it's not - and I guess you fall into the 'not' group.
But do you have any filters active, or do you have any add-ons to your browser that makes your installation even slightly non-standard? Only you know that: no one from Google can.
In a plain vanilla installation of an OS and browser, without any additional frilly bits of add-on software, this issue doesn't occur. I merely postulate that it's those "frilly bits of software add-ons" that causes this loss to occur.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||Mack211||3/25/10 7:03 AM|
My company is having the same problem. We just switched to google apps email 2 months ago for our business. The worst part is our CEO is the one having the problems. He does not have any phone connected to his mail account. He is only using IMAP connection through MS Outlook 2007. On almost a daily basis now he will have to check his 'All Mail' folder to see what messages did not make it into his inbox. There are also times when he double clicks a message in outlook to read it and the message disappears from the inbox folder. The only place it is seen after that is in the 'All Mail' folder. If I go into Google apps web client I can see that all labels have been removed from the emails in question.
Since I am not the only one having this issue I have a strong feeling this is fully a Google problem! IMAP with Google is not production ready if this kind of things happen!
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||3/25/10 8:26 AM|
@Mack211 - what labels does your CEO have set to show in IMAP? All of them or just a small subset?
What IMAP settings are set for his account? Is this different for other users on that domain?
Does he use Lookout2007 to download the whole message and read the local copy, or just to read the header from the Google Apps account?
Does anyone else on the domain use Lookout (like the CEO) - or are the rest of the users using the webmail interface to access their messages? Are they experiencing the problem?

As I was "surfin' " around, I stumbled across this Google Blog page... http://chrome.blogspot.com/ , didn't have a chance to read into it deeply yet, just discovered it this a.m. Whether their is anything useful to us on this subject, that is to be found. I have a full day today out on the field, so if any of you have time to dig into it today, excellent. Leave a post to advise whether it's worth anything...
P.S. to "JohnW2", Didn't accessed Gmail with my phone since the issue started with me. Then I did it a couple of times to see what would happen... No change... i haven't lost labels or experienced any of my inbox emails going anywhere since the first incident. So, I guess I fall into the "one time" category....
Have a great day!!

I'm still having this problem and am about to ditch and set up another Mail Account since nothing seems to change and I've only had Windows 7 since December. Bring them both back PLEASE Microsoft, had no problem with them in six years, and it was so easy to open attachments if you wanted to, and so uncomplicated.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||deathtap||4/7/10 3:26 AM|
Reason: Outlook, and Apple Mail both have Spam filters automatically enabled. Disable them.
Apple Mail: Mail > Preferences > Junk Email > Uncheck 'Filter Junk Mail'. To be safe, click on Mailbox > Rebuild when done and wait.
Outlook: Tools > Options > Preferences > Under 'Email' section, click the Junk Mail button > Select 'No Automatic Filtering...'
Further useful information: The reason why the emails disappear is because they are being marked as Junk and if the level is 'high', it will remove that email from your Inbox. In order to understand how some emails work, you have to understand how emails are graded (see below for more info). Google filters out the majority of the Spam messages into your Spam folder online. If you use IMAP, you can see this folder. Your email client searches through the emails that Google has already scanned, and marks more emails further. Since the emails are already filtered, you can think of the your email client becoming really strict and will start marking legit emails (especially ones that have Forwarded) as Spam and depending the level will either mark it, move it, or delete it (disappearing emails). Unless you have specifically trained your email to 'learn' (in Apple and Outlook 2007) which emails are not Spam (which can take several hours of you sitting in front of a computer pushing one button at a time), they will automatically get removed from your Inbox, which is why you can see it in the 'All Mail' folder and not in your Inbox.
Information about Spam Grading: In order for emails to be marked as Spam, there is a rough table of grades that have to be fulfilled. 1 being legit, and lower numbers being marked for Spam (usually the lowest grade is 10, but I've seen emails being graded as low as 20). For example, an email you send to a friend, and that person replies to you with more than 100 or 150 words will be graded as 1, meaning a legit email. So it won't be marked as Spam. Now, if your friend attaches an image or two, it might be 'suspicious' and get graded as 3 (suspected Spam?). Emails that don't adhere to certain rules (there are many rules), will get 'higher grades', meaning higher numbers, and therefore get marked as Spam. Forwarded emails, emails with a lot of links, emails sent through a separate server (called a relay). All these contribute to the grading of Spam. Even word combinations sometimes can be affect the grade of an email. If Spam was a 'Yes' or 'No', you'd see a lot more in that Spam folder. Especially chain-emails.

Deathtap, you are a genius. I (thought) I had tried everything. I haven't even used Outlook for months, but it certainly was the culprit. Buy that man a pint.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||deathtap||4/12/10 4:26 PM|
@clacks: Thanks, I noticed a lot of people having problems with this and it seemed selfish not to mention the answer. By order of elimination, this is the only answer. If "All Mail" has the missing email then that means that Google's servers have it. That would mean that something outside the server is making those emails vanish. The only difference between the inbox online and the inbox in your email client should give you a clue. It has to be something that your client is doing to those emails. The only remaining answer is that the spam filters are the culprits. And if you use a viral scan software that includes spam filters then this would also contribute. An example would be Sophos End Client antiviral protection. It comes with it's own spam filter that automatically removes spam and puts it in a seperate folder only easily viewable from the client itself. So, check to be sure that your antivirus doesn't have a spam filter as well. I have totally gone off email clients and only use the web browser now.

Hello, I am also having a problem with my messages disappearing from my inbox. When I try to look in "archive", nothing shows up either. Occasionally, some of the messages will reappear but I am not sure why. Can you please help me?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||4/13/10 9:07 AM|
@cathykazbar - just so you know for the future, the ONLY thing that archiving does in Gmail is to remove the inbox label from a message. Nothing else at all. it was implemented simply as a way to prevent messages constantly showing in the inbox display.
ALL your messages are stored in the the same place - that one single big bucket which is the 7GB storage quota allocated to you when you signed up, and which you see as "All Mail".

HAD SIMILAR ISSUES (Mail shows up in ALLMAIL, but not in my INBOX)... After much frustration, I FIXED it by CHANGING THE OUTGOING SERVER to be smtp.googlemail.com and NOT my individual POP accounts' outgoing servers on my 3rd party email program (Mozilla Thunderbird in this case). Hope it helps.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||adreher||4/29/10 9:58 AM|
A simple explanation to your problem is you might be “double” clicking on an email instead of using a “single” click. (When using Google’s WebUI) It takes only a “single” click to open an email and if you get a little “click happy”, which we are all guilty of, you have the possibility of sending an email to be Archived (All Mail), to the Trash, or to the Spam label. This is kind of like the Perfect Storm :-) If you have enough email in your inbox causing you to scroll up, the email you want to open is at the correct position, and then you “double” click on it with your cursor in just the right spot. The first click opens the email, and with a cursor in just the right spot, the second click selects the “Archive”, “Report spam”, or “Delete” button. I’ve watched people do this and I even watched someone who had their cursor was in just the right spot that the second click hit the “X” next to a label, which removed it from that label. This might be an explanation to your situation or it might not. Hope it helps!

I'm having this same issue right now. Twice in the past couple weeks my inbox view has suddenly become empty. The messages remain visible in the All Mail view. The last time it happened the Inbox view seemed to working fine, visibly displaying a growing list of messages until, once again the inbox view was completely empty this morning.
On both occasions I have noticed the issue first thing in the morning (and I may be imagining things, but I think both times on a Monday morning). It's as though some process sets the archive label on every msg in my inbox. I am certain I do not have any filters set that could have this effect, and I have POP and forwarding disabled, though I do use IMAP for Blackberry integration.

I had a similar issue where my mail were not showing in my Inbox but a copy was marked "read" and left in "AllMail" folder. In my case, it was because I enabled the POP feature in microsoft live mail to pull my gmail emails over to live. Even though I had disabled forwarding on google side microsoft live managed to remove the emails from my google Inbox. By the way, for those who want to drop gmail, check out microsoft live.

My account was comprised yesterday. I reset it wit a new password. Same thing happened to me as other post. My mail now goes directly to all mail. Frustrating to say the least. No one to contact at Google
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||6/30/10 1:39 AM|
If all your messages are only viewable in All Mail, then have a look in Filters and clear everything there. Also Forwarding.
Something is seeing the messages come in and removing the inbox label (by forcing an Archive?).
So try it for a few days with no filters or forwarding (even if you were doing so before the hack).
And No, there is no one to contact at Google. They don't provide support for any users of their free services. Only for those who pay for a Premier Google Apps account.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||xsamat||7/15/10 2:18 AM|
A work colleague has this problem.
It's a very strange one. Let me explain:
When she receives an email, the unread count in the inbox gets incremented by one, although the inbox itself doesn't show one more message.
Then, if she goes to the 'All Mail' the new mail appears there.
She can then return to the Inbox and even hit the refresh button, and the mail won't be there.
BUT, if she uses the browser's refresh, the new mail is going to be there.
So it seems that the 'Refresh' button code is not working, or the browser is caching that frames content or something similar.
In our case, it has nothing to do with Filters, IMAP, or SPAM filtering from another account...
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||xsamat||7/15/10 2:21 AM|
Oh, and by the way. I thought my colleagues problem might have to do with Java VM, and updated everything.
Also happened both in IE and Chrome...
But, guess what?
I can log in using her machine and my acount works perfectly.
And another interesting thing.
If I use lab's 'multiple inbox' feature, the additional inbox works just fine.
Hope these clues help Google work it out.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||xsamat||7/15/10 6:58 AM|
Still more: If you switch to the previous version, you lose almost everything (labs...) but the problem disappears.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||markallison49||7/16/10 1:48 PM|
I am also having the disappearing email problem where an email very briefly appears in the preview pane then disappears. I can find it in the all mail section but if I don't catch it in the preview I don't know to look there. I am using Windows 7 64 bit and Windows Live Mail. I use no filters except spam. I am disappointed with Google over the seeming lack of consideration in regards to this problem.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||R.R.||7/21/10 9:40 AM|
I'd like to say that this BUG with Gmail still exists. And from the looks of this thread it's been unresolved for >14 months! Wow, that's some real neglect on Google's part.
I've also confirmed what Xsamat says that if you switch to "Older version" or "Basic HTML" view, the problem goes away. But those old views lack basic functionality (like not being able to hide labels) so I don't see them as viable workarounds.
And I've also found that if I logoff/logon the Inbox will now display the new messages correctly.
Lastly I can say there is a similar (related?) bug related to Trash.
Often times when I delete messages out of Inbox, they don't show up in Trash (unless I logoff/logon).
Also when there are messages in Trash and I click "Empty Trash now" it says "All messages... deleted forever", BUT they still show up in Trash list! (unless I logoff/logon of course)
I'm 99.99% sure that the "newer version" of Gmail just has bugs displaying/updating message lists correctly.
What's puzzling is that this doesn't happen to all my Gmail accounts.
It only happens to my Google Apps Standard Edition mailboxes (which are brand new and vitually empty).
But it doesn't seem to happen to my Google Apps Premiere Edition or my basic Gmail.com account.
Ugh. Is Google listening? Or are they just unable to find/fix this bug? Yikes.
p.s. I wrote about this also in another Google Help thread: http://www.google.com/support/
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||evkwilson||8/1/10 9:37 AM|
I have actually made it a habit to go to All Mail at least a few times a day, select all those that didn't make it to my Inbox, or did so briefly, and click "Move to Inbox". This manual labeling at least allows me to access the mail from my Droid phone. Unfortunately, even after I move everything to my Inbox, somehow the Inbox label gets removed sporadically and I have to go back to All Mail to re-label them. They are not part of any previous conversations or responses; they are new incoming mail messages.
Very frustrating. My two cents.

Just another Gmail user who is experianceing this problem.
I have had forwarding on to my MAc at home for years.
No problems save for some weirdness now and then.
Recently I could not sign into my account, it was if I did not exist.
Then the next day I could sign in again.
Since then all my mail disappears as mentioned in this thread.
I have no filters and nothing has changed.
If I email myself from work, the messages appear then disappear
And my computer email app, Mail does not receive anything.
Goolge please get back to me. I will need to change my email account if the thing does not work
PLEASE GOOGLER, GMEN and ladies contact me and fix this problem

I am also having the same issue.
The Inbox was working fine until I synced it with hotmail.
I can see new emails in the inbox but some email has dissapeared.
I havent deleted them.
When I search them in the search engine I can see them.
I have no filters.
I am running Win 7.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||danjake39||9/22/10 9:44 AM|
I just had this happen to me this morning for the first time.
All of my "Inbox" labels were removed. I think all other labels stayed put.
If this keeps happening, it will get very annoying.
If this is a server side problem, I hope Google is working on it since it seems like a relatively common problem.

When I delete in Thunderberg, it also deletes on gmail. I checked the forwarding in settings and I have NO options under forwarding:
- In 'Forwarding', there's an option to forward a copy of incoming mail and archive it in Gmail.
I don't have this option in my settings. Could this be the problem?.

My workaround was to set up the Exchange for Calendars and Contacts, but then set up the Gmail mail account in the typical way on the iPhone. I got all my email back.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||twsimpson||12/3/10 10:22 AM|
The problem reported in this thread seems to have evolved from the opening complaints. I am having the original problem reported -- my Inbox is suddenly depopulated of messages that I had kept there for, in one or two cases, over two or three years. I use my Inbox as a running reference list of items that need to be tended to sooner or later -- e.g., holiday gift ideas, upcoming conference dates, etc. Of course, I can locate all of these emails in the Archive, but over the course of several years and months, I accumulated enough messages in the box that I wouldn't even remember what to look for. This, as it turns out, is exactly why people use lists to begin with! So we don't have to remember everything! So when something like this happens, you can imagine my grief!
My problem happened curiously at the same time that I had uploaded several GBs of video files to the Google cloud to share with a colleague on the east coast. Could that operation be related to the sudden depopulation? Anybody have a clue?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||nicholasgoss||12/7/10 5:01 PM|
I have been using Gmail since it's inception. I have the same account since i first signed up.
I have about 1000 + emails in my inbox and they have been there since they same to my inbox.
Last night *poo f* they all vanished. I can only see them via "All mail", so it appears I have the same issue as these people.
Thetrouble I have is I cant fish through 5000 messages to find the one's that belong in my inbox and the one's that belong elsewhere.
What is the FIX for this let alone why did all my inbox emails vanish in the first place. Alot of my emails are to & from lawyers so they ARE mission critical. HAD I have known about this issue, I would not have left any email sin the inbox but assigne dthem a label elsewhere.

I was wondering, is everybody having this problem, using an Iphone? Could it be that the Iphone or any phone is the source of the trouble?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||nicholasgoss||12/8/10 1:36 AM|
You could be onto something. I noticed a user posted that when he "reset his iPhone google mail account" on his iPhone all his messages came back.
Yes I am an iPhone user with gmail synched.
If a few more respond in the same I may try that users suggestion??
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||TheSaj||12/13/10 12:41 PM|
Same issue here....
Mails show up in "All Mail" and no where else. Have no filters or what not. It's clearly an aspect of Google's system.
I believe it's a by-product issue of their attempt to filter priority mail. As most of the emails that fall into this category are what I would say lower priority, mailing lists, etc.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||12/14/10 7:57 AM|
@The Saj - the only reason for that is that the 'inbox' label has been removed from the message, and no other label has been applied. This only happens when a message is archived. [Hardly surprising, since that the intended function of the Archive button!]
The Priority Mail doesn't have any effect on the label applied to a message, merely recognising the indications previously given and displaying the messages which you've told it are priority ones.
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||DNAB||12/14/10 1:58 PM|
All this is great, but is there a clear and SIMPLE way of reapplying the INBOX filter to the missing messages once they're found?
|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||JohnW2||12/14/10 5:01 PM|
When the selection is on display, click on Labels and Add 'inbox' label to them. They should all then re-appear when you click on the inbox label (under Compose Mail) to re-initiate the search for messages showing that label.

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||arosga||12/21/10 7:28 AM|
I'm having this issue in a way different from that described here: only on my iPhone. I'm pretty sure it's the result of a virus, as it started immediately after I clicked on an ad emailed to me (apparently) from Rosetta Stone. I rarely click on such ads, but this one seemed legit and a very good xmas offer. Right after I did so, all kinds of things seemed to go haywire on my phone. The gmail problem described in this thread occurred after I'd reset my phone, which was the only way I was able to access the mail program on the phone at all.
Fortunately, when I log into the same gmail account on my laptop, all the messages are right where they should be in my inbox. So there seems to be no explanation OTHER than virus/malware to explain the phenomenon. However, I'm unaware of any virus protection software (as suggested by gmail in its "Keeping your account secure" page) for the iPhone. That page seems only for actual computers.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

|Re: Messages disappeared from my inbox, but show up in All Mail||moj027||1/7/11 8:52 PM|
Adding another voice to this thread. Happens when viewing email on an iPhone (4.2, 3gs). We thought they were being deleted, but they do continue to exist when searched for or under "All Mail" on the web client. The inbox tag is somehow being removed when accessed via the phone client. Very, very intermittent. But if I select the thread and choose "move to inbox" it's right back.
Amazing that this has been going on so long with no Google Employee pitching in to provide input. But, I guess no alarm bells go off so long as the ads keep showing up properly.

This has been happening to me almost weekly for the past couple of months. I have been with google for a long time, and they offer a great service, so like others I don't want to have to change but its driving me nuts. I have changed settings, and rebooted devices but there doesn't seem to be any common threads.
I await a solution like everyone else
