You should ignore the From field of spam. Spammers can put whatever they want in there, so it is meaningless.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||Patricia71||6/11/09 1:35 PM|
So why is it that every time i try to unsubscribe them it always goes to a canadian chemist? The title of the email will say something but once is open so i can unsubscribe it always end at the same place, this canadian chemist.
What do i need to do to be able to unsubscribe?
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||Joshua||6/11/09 1:43 PM|
You can't unsubscribe from this garbage. In fact, by trying to unsubscribe, you are confirming to the spammer that you are reading their mail. They sometimes use this as an excuse to send you more spam.
If they were ethical people interested in what you really want, they wouldn't be sending you spam in the first place.
The best strategy is to rely on gmail's usually-excellent spam filters and ignore what is in the spam folder.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||Patricia71||6/11/09 1:49 PM|
Ok. Sorry to keep asking you questions but i am more of a techno fear kind a person instead of a techno joy, so all this is very complicated and crap but i want to make sure i know what im doing.
So the best thing to do is just leave them there and gmail spam filters takes care of it or do i just delete them. it's because i can get anything between 1 and 30 a day.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||Joshua||6/11/09 2:39 PM|
Yes, just leave them there and ignore them. No need to delete them. Gmail will automatically delete them after 30 days so there is no reason for you to do anything.
The only reason to ever click on the Spam link is if you think you might be missing some mail: you can check to make sure gmail didn't accidentally put good mail in the spam folder.

Thank you for helping me and again sorry for all the questions.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||rxc102||6/12/09 3:23 AM|
I have been getting spam email that indicates it comes from "me". I always just delete it, but I have begun to wonder if I should be concerned if this means someone is using my Gmail address to send spam more generally. In other words, when spam messages indicate sender as "me", are other people also receiving this spam from my Gmail address? And if this is so, what do I do about it? I would hate to find my email address on a list of spammers. I would be grateful for advice on this question.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||Patricia71||6/12/09 5:05 AM|
I've been having the same problem and after submit a question i was told to just leave it, don't even delete it because gmail will take care of it with their spam filter. Now about you not wanting your email address in a list of spammers, i am not sure what to do but i have a feeling that that is out of your control. if you try to unsbuscribe it it will be worst so your best option is just ignore it and don't even open it let gmail take care of that.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||marbear931||6/12/09 6:25 AM|
I have also been receiving up to 30 spam emails a day from "me", and have always just deleted them. However, I have also begun to worry that other people are also receiving these spam emails from my gmail address. Do these "spoofing" attacks send the spam to other people from your email address, or only to your own email address (therefore, from "me"). I hope this question makes sense! Thanks
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||Joshua||6/12/09 7:34 AM|
In the most usual case, the spammer simply sets the From and To address on the spam to the same value, so this goes to only you.
If your contacts are receiving spam with your From address, that isn't spoofing. That means your password was stolen and your account abused by a spammer.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||GXM||6/12/09 10:53 PM|
I'm somewhat relieved to read Joshua's expansion of the FAQ on this topic, that the spammer simply sets the "From" and "To" address to the same value -- resulting in an email (in Spam) apparently from "me".
However I get an awful lot of these. Having tracked spam emails from "me" since early May 09 I found their proportion to all spam received was:
28 percent (of the previous 100 spam emails) until 6 May 09 (when I changed my password); then
20 percent (of 96 spam emails) until 8 May; then
12 percent (of 201 spam emails) until 12 May; then
17 percent (of 1600 spam emails) till 13 June (today)
-- so the proportion is increasing again.
As 100 spam emails seems too small a sample (before 6 May) to know whether the drop from 28 percent to 20 percent was significant after changing my password, I cannot tell if my account was compromised -- ie whether spammers had been using my forged "from" name to spam others too.
Logically this seems unlikely, as (1) any replies (from others) would surely be going to the wrong email address (mine) unless spammers have some way of bypassing it? And also because, (2) if spammers were actually sending spam from my account, wouldn't it appear in my "Sent Mail"? And none of my contacts has complained of receiving any from me.
But I don't know if this logic is enough to stop worrying about it!
Might this percentage change simply indicate more spammers entering the market all the time, with the proportion of newcomers outnumbering those with software to auto-change the "From" and "To" address to the same?
If not, and short of spoofing, are there any other possibilities for misuse?
And should I keep changing my password?

Does changing your password help ward off spam? I am having the same issue - going from several hundred spam emails a month to several thousand - and now I have had people tell me that MY emails are going into their spam folders and I am wondering if there is anything I can do or if I just have to shut down my account and get a new user name.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||tomnv||7/26/09 10:22 AM|
By default, gmail puts "me" on any reply message, if gmail would change the default then
if a person sends an email with " me" in the from portion you could use the filter, but
I doubt if this will happen.

How can we be sure that our mail account has stopped being spoofed???
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||lithiumflower||9/13/09 7:02 AM|
I keep getting emails sent from 'sort of' my address, and it all links to the Canadian Chemist mentioned above! I clicked on it once to try and unsubscribe. My address is basically lastname....@gmail.com, and the address I'm receiving spam from is lastname...@gmail.com (I know gmail doesn't recognize dots within a username as a character so this is why it comes from "me"). But the sender name is different - one of them is Ezequiel Obqzqbe. Which is NOT me, or even close. Can I stop these emails? They already go to my Spam folder, but are still annoying and have me concerned.

Joshua wrote: "If your contacts are receiving spam with your From address, that isn't spoofing. That means your password was stolen and your account abused by a spammer."
That is a pretty big and invalid conclusion.
First, I had a situation once where my contacts were receiving spam with my From address. It turned out that one of my friends' Contact lists had been stolen and the spammer was sending mails using some of her contacts as Froms to other contacts as Tos. In fact, some of my friend's friends were also my friends, so some of my contacts were indeed getting spam with me in the From, even though my contacts had not been stolen.
Second, there are a lot of sites, like linkedin, that allow you to upload your contacts list. Some of these sites (not linkedin) are unscrupulous, and trick you into uploading your contacts. This can also result in your contacts' getting spam "From" you.
Neither of the above involves any sort of password compromise at all.
I wanted to point this out to avoid unnecessary fear if indeed your contacts start getting spam "From" you. Having said that, it of course *could* be a password compromise, so it would be a good idea to change your password(s) anyway, particularly if you are not sure.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||Joshua||9/24/09 12:00 PM|
@wchlm: You are correct. But the cases you mention are the exceptions. In general, if you find that your contacts are getting spam from you that you don't recognize at all, that means your account is compromised. To confirm absolutely, you should look at the full headers of the spam to see if it comes from google's servers.
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||wchlm||9/24/09 12:10 PM|
@Joshua. Thanks. I just wanted to clarify a point and make sure people don't freak out before they had to. It's much better to freak out after you have to. ;-)
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||nicole.p||9/24/09 12:55 PM|
Thanks Joshua & wchlm - the big question I still have is what can you do about it now? If you find out your account has been compromised. Besides changing your password (which I did and not much seems to have changed), is there anything you can do to protect your account?
The reason I am asking is because I am about ready to give up on my gmail account, I should have already but I don't really want to - I'd rather fix it. However, I have about 1 person a week tell me they didn't get an email from me but then found it later in their spam inbox.
Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to clean up my account so this stops happening?
|Re: Why i am getting spam mail send by me to me||wchlm||9/24/09 9:02 PM|
Whoa. You are now asking about something completely different.
What Joshua and I were talking about was real spam that was sent to your contacts, appearing to have come from you.
You are now asking about non-spam that you yourself really sent that winds up in your friend's spam mailbox. This is something completely different.
This is probably happening because they classified all the real spam as spam, and the spam filter "learned" that mail from nicole.p should be regarded as spam. This is a tough one, and now that your friends know about it, they should monitor their spam mailboxes and declare the "real" emails from you as not spam. Then the spam filter will learn that a "From" of nicole.p is not sufficient to make an email spam.
The other thing I would say is that this happens to many of us, regardless of email address, once in a while. In my experience, incidents of spam being sent out under your name last for a few weeks, then tend to stop or at least slow down dramatically. So maybe patience is warranted, in addition to warning your friends.
