|How can I turn off automatic archiving of incomming messages?||bbottsnm||6/23/10 4:39 PM|
Explain your issue in full detail here:A few weeks ago, I changed my gmail settings to include both POP and IMAP support for incoming messages. I'm not sure where, but I ended up choosing automatic archival of all incoming messages to be copied and placed in the All Mail label. I have since disabled IMAP, using only POP, and do not want to automatically archive all messages. However, I cannot find how to disable it. So, my question is:
How do I disable the automatic archiving and placing a copy of all incoming messages into the All Mail label?

Are your messages skipping the Inbox or are you just confused about their appearance in All Mail?
All Mail contains everything in your account, except Trash and Spam, from the time it arrives. You cannot change that.

The messages are not skipping the Inbox, and a copy is placed in All Mail. When I receive my Gmail from my email handler (Thunderbird/POP) on my desktop, I have Thunderbird set up to request and remove the received messages from my Gmail Inbox. However, later when I log back into Gmail via my browser, the downloaded messages that have been removed from the Inbox label are still present in the All Mail label. Even after I delete the messages from the Thunderbird Inbox, they remain in Gmail All Mail . Maybe my questions are:
1) How do the deleted Inbox messages get removed from the All Mail label?
2) Is it up to POP users to delete/maintain old messages in All Mail?
I appreciate you taking time to respond and explain the All Mail label as I was not even aware of it until recently reading about archiving. My questions may have to do with the fact that I'm not using IMAP and the synching it provides, but I was trying to avoid IMAP because of the huge synching overhead I'm hit with when I access my Gmail from a seldom used laptop.
Thanks again for your help.

You can set Gmail to delete the messages when they are downloaded. The option is in the Forwarding and POP/IMAP section in your Gmail settings.

I am having the same trouble. I I forward a copy to my work email and then keep gmails copy in the inbox. When messages are accessed with POP delete gmails copy. **** when I go to all mail, every email is in there**** how do I delete these emails or not have them archive to the ALL MAIL box

If you chose the Gmail option to delete messages after they are accessed through POP, they will no longer be found in All Mail after they are downloaded or deleted by your email program.

ok..when I get my email on my iphone, when I move the email to trash the message then shows up in all mail on my iphone

You are probably using IMAP access with the iPhone, so the POP setting does not matter. To delete the messages through IMAP, move them to [Gmail]/Trash.
If you enable the Advanced IMAP Controls lab, you can change to delete behaviour, or hide All Mail (or other labels) from IMAP.

I want to disable Archive so my emails don't go to ALL Mail. I'm using IMAP enabled and not POP. It looks like you can accomplish this in POP by 2. When messages are accessed with POP "delete Gmail's copy" is this correct? If I use IMAP then how do I stop emails from being Archive to ALL Mail?

You cannot prevent your messages from appearing in All Mail, because it is your mailbox. If a message is not in All Mail, it is not in your account.
You can, if you choose, hide All Mail from IMAP, as explained above.

Certain messages are skipping my inbox, and I can't figure out why. I suspect it may be because of the archive feature, but I'm not sure.
