How do I change GMail back to the old look? coloneldax2005 11/1/11 5:39 PM
I just clicked on a button to change my GMail look to the new look and I don't like it.
How do I change it back?

Operating system: WinXP
Program: Google Chrome
Your antivirus software: Mcaffe

Thanks,
Daniel
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/1/11 5:49 PM
Hi Daniel,

I'm sorry to hear you don't like the new look. If you click on the cog wheel at the top right corner of your inbox messages, you should see an option to revert to the old look temporarily.

Before you do, I'd recommend checking out density settings and themes -- these might help resolve any problems you are having with the new look.

I'd also love if you can click the "Send Feedback" link at the bottom right of your Gmail, so you can let our team know why you are switching back temporarily.

Best,
Sarah

i can't find it either :(
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? anon1234121314 11/1/11 6:46 PM
found it!  it's not at the top right, it's a little below that, there's a second cog wheel below the cog wheel at the top right.  That's the one you need to click on.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? coloneldax2005 11/1/11 7:06 PM
Thanks Sarah and anon. Got it.
Hope I can keep the look..
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Susan Louise 11/2/11 4:43 PM
I found it too! Looks like a flower, not a clog wheel to me. Whatever. It's next to the label saying how many messages you have and the next/previous buttons.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/2/11 5:07 PM
Glad you found it! I'm also attaching a forum post with some additional information.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Farid.MI 11/2/11 5:35 PM
sorry, im too used to old look,
i like old look as i can see more mail, also the color is not TOOO BRIGHT!,
i dont use google doc much so i dont really mind the new look, but gmail, i cant handle that look.
maybe its just TOO used to this classic look that i feell i can move on
even with themes, dont seem to work for m e...
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/2/11 5:38 PM
Hi Farid.MI,

Have you tried changing your density to "Compact"? With Compact, you should see the same amount of mail that you can see in the old look.

Best,
Sarah
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? galeshka 11/3/11 12:15 AM
I'm opening GMail on Chrome, but here, the new gear button doesn't appear at all. heck, with some of the other themes, even the older email navigation button too disappear. now i had to revert back to basic html look and i lost the chat feature there.

*meh*

New look is stupid
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? kittieflyn 11/3/11 9:05 AM
I do not like the new look - it feels like 'email for dummies'.  The format doesn't fit onto one pane and it's very cumbersome.  Why do companies insist on changing what is not broken?  I'm switching back...once I can find the 'revert' button.  I hope this doesn't make it past Beta.

yes i found it but how do u change it back to stay that way forever
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? blue user 11/3/11 10:26 PM
I hate the new look of gmail and if they force this change, I will very likely start actively using my live account instead. There was nothing wrong with the old look. According to gmail message, the new look will eventually be changed for everyone. Even if there are settings that can be modified to make the think look closer to the old look, how dumb and cumbersome is that??? Why would I want someone to change my look that I'm happy with and then have to go in and figure out the various settings to make it look the way I did in the first place.

Dumb.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? This isn't too long 11/4/11 12:20 AM
Google's demise has begun.  They used to be about giving people power and choice.  Now they are heading the Apple-like direction of telling us what is best for us, but pretending to care by asking for feedback--meanwhile their boulder of forced-change is rolling up behind us, ready to squash us like an archaeologist who didn't see anything wrong with what some people considered "old."

I can see the future now: client-side apps synced by things like Dropbox and IMAP--oh, wait, that's the present, and the past, too.  Maybe these web apps aren't all they were cracked up to be.  I don't like having the software--or UIs--I've been using for years being ripped out of my hands by UI "experts" who think they know better.

Web apps and webmail have always given power and control to the provider, whether Hotmail or Gmail or Yahoo.  The difference was that Google was doing things Right.  Now they have reversed course.  It's time to take control back into our own hands.  There is plenty of FOSS webmail software that can be run on services like Dreamhost--software that is under the user's control--software that can't be ripped out his hands by "progress."
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? richardwmah 11/4/11 10:48 AM
The new look is hard to adjust to, especially to read.  I now just use my Mail application on my Mac instead.

Maybe it takes time to adjust but for all the email applications that I have used, the new look interface is not very friendly, in my opinion.

Sometimes trying too hard to change something that works may make things worse, no matter if the team at Google thinks otherwise.

Maybe the resource/effort should be used for some other projects.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? jak-jak 11/4/11 2:59 PM
Sarah,

No offense to you or anybody at Google, but this thing stinks! A lot!

Poor choice of colors. Even worse, a poor choice of background images. Hard to read, hard to find things.

However, I went through all the options. They all suck. I used the new interface solid for 2 days. I changed back to the old interface today. If Google decide to adopt this travesty permanently, I'll be forced to switch to Yahoo (ugh!) or Thunderbird (yetch!) or something else.

Yes, Sarah,  it' that BAD :(

Go back to the old version. Please...

Stop doing "The Microsoft Thing" - change for changes sake disguised as an upgrade.

Hire outside "user(s)" (not Google employees or graphic designers)  to do the design and the testing.

Design the product for productivity.

Stop tweaking the interface in large amounts.

Stop using people with 20/20 vision to test the performance.

Make the type adjustable. Not everybody sees perfectly.

I know, I know. It will not be cool then...  :(

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!

Leave the old interface as an option for those who prefer it. Believe it or not, I (and I suspect many others) HATE to be forced to learn a new user interface just because some designer thinks its "cool" and/or  "state of the art" or whatever it's called these days.

Please stop forcing users to choose between "cra*p and sh*t.

We don't want pretty - we want usability.

If you don't understand what I'm saying here, email me. I will give you the solutions.

Steve

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/4/11 4:23 PM
Hi everyone, thanks for the feedback.

galeshka, are you using Multiple Inboxes? There is a bug that might prevent you from seeing the gear. Try opening a message, or disable Multiple Inboxes temporarily.

richardwmah, what makes it difficult for you to read? I am curious because we are investigating some issues with contrast. If it's spacing, try changing your density settings.

kittieflyn, try changing to "Compact" density -- you will see the same email spacing that you had in the old look.

Best,
Sarah

Sorry Sarah, but how long time you and your team was working to make this "new look"???

Looks terrible!

You don't have any talented designers??? Did you learn anything about colors???

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? bgavideo 11/6/11 8:56 AM
Please leave the old look as it is. The new look dosent fit everyone...
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? vince.cimo 11/7/11 8:06 AM
Hello google. As far as the new look is concerned, in my opinion the primary issue is the fact that there is a padding or margin added to the top & bottom of the mail item. In the old look, you could easily view a number of emails on the page, however in the new look, that number is significantly cut down. I'll bet that if you guys removed the padding & margin from the css you'd get a lot less complaints.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? nevadarose 11/7/11 11:10 AM
Thanks everyone for assistance.  The new look just does not get it at all.  No themes to speak of unless you are a child or like blank.

To just move things around and bad themes. They paid someone for this.  What a waste of money.  Just for a tax Write off.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Nikosini 11/7/11 11:55 AM
I, personally, don't care one way or another about the new look vs. the old. Since this new look is being forced on us, the point is moot...There are some things I would like to see in whatever "look" is decided upon, and these are:
Readability - I would like to be able to pick the background/text color combination. I find that I prefer dark background/light text.
I would also like to choose the font, font size and attribute (bold, italic, etc). that my messages appear in...
It would also be nice if signatures are included in the "hide quoted text" option.
Real Estate - I would like to be able to "collapse/expand" the left pane whenever I wish...
One more point: I have selected the "new" look by clicking on the ugly brown rectangle that appears in the lower right part of the screen. Now that I've done that, I see no reason for that box to appear EVERY time I start Gmail... Please get rid of it...
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ben.bowman 11/7/11 3:04 PM
I left feedback on the look and feel - Why is "compact" not the default option? this is way less efficient and easy to read.  The more I have to customize something to make it usable the less I like it...
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ben.bowman 11/7/11 3:07 PM
Just switched back to the old look.  WAY easier to read than the new, even with "compact" turned on.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Esben 11/7/11 5:41 PM
I was looking around this forum section to see if there was a way to turn of the small 'nag' window asking me to try the new look. I had closed it several times and it was getting a little annoying. But now I learn that the new look will be a standard feature. I never considered trying out the new one, because the old one works just fine. Now I guess I have no choice but to get used to it. :-(

There are plenty of basic features that gmail is lacking, which normal email clients have had for more than a decade. Why not implement some of those instead of forcing a new UI on the users.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? nelipot 11/9/11 2:42 PM
OK another big fan of Google but really dislike the new look over all Google products that i use (gmail, photos, reader and google docs). Have signed up to Google+ but again little to inspire there.

My main complaint is the dumbing down / simplification.  Quite capable of seeing a lot of buttons, setting etc on one screen.  Hiding them (even if just through dropdowns e.g. mail, contacts task) not particularly useful.  Would rather see them than a ton of WHITE SPACE.

I have found the density setting so am somewhat pacified, however this has not been translated to the Reader screen (no density choice there, just lots of wasted space). Photos particularly seems to have lost functionality, can no longer organise photos, the only thing under options is to delete your album. With photos there was no opt in or revert to old look. I use it a lot as i am away travelling and taking photos every day.

As for the feedback function (on Photos) disaster! The number of ties i have tried to give feedback only to be frustrated with screen hangs etc...  usually its a negative feedback because the new look is so frustrating... imagine my frustration when the feedback function fails to work as well...

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? glovermc 11/10/11 11:34 AM
I am not old fashioned,
I do not stick to old trends
I never get too comfortable to change.

All I want is to check my gmail as easily and fast as possible without eye strain.

Tried the new look.   It hurts my eyes, I strain to look for older emails, I can not separate the emails.

Sticking with the old look, can not image changing to another look...its not pretty, but its functional and thats what emails are all about.

I felt the same way immediately when I tried google voice and the blandness of the entire page made it difficult to look for numbers and messages.

Thank you

Sarah: " Be sure to use the "send feedback" link if you haven't already."

Thank you. I have done,
I signed up here purely to express myself about the New Mail.

I think I've done that now.
"If it ain't bust, don't fix it" seems a regular refrain. The reason you may have to drag us "kicking and screaming into the century of the fruitbat" is because we have seen the future and it doesn't exactly look better than the present.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 11/11/11 6:27 AM
My problem with the new look?  All my email messages just disappeared.  They would flash up for less than a second during start up, then they were gone.  Every email in every single folder.  I can't be bothered to try to adapt to something new that doesn't work when the older one worked just fine.

Sarah, take notice that it seems like.....
1- Nobody likes this new piece of green toe jam
and
2- Nobody finds your comments helpful at all.

I know you are just doing your job, or doing what they told you to do, but you are going to have a hard row to hoe if you think you can sell this idea to most people using gmail.

Go to your bosses and tell them this story.....

In the Beginning was the plan.
And then came the assumptions.
And the assumptions were without form.
And the plan was completely without substance.
And the darkness was upon the face of the workers. And they spoke among themselves saying: "It is a crock of sh_t, and it stinketh."

And the workers went unto their supervisors, and sayeth: "It is a pail of dung, and none can abide the odor Thereof"

And the supervisors went unto their managers and sayeth unto them, "It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong, Such that none can abide it."

And the managers went unto the directors and sayeth, "It is a vessel of fertilizer, and none can abide its strength." And the directors spoke amongst themselves, saying one to another: "It contains that which aids plant growth, and is very strong."

And the directors went unto the vice presidents and sayeth to them, "It promotes growth, and is very powerful."

And the vice presidents went unto the president, and sayeth unto him, "This new plan will actively promote growth and efficiency of this company, and certain areas in particular."

And the president looked upon the plan, and saw that it was good.
And the plan became policy.
And this is how shit happens.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? theonlynikki 11/11/11 12:28 PM
Please, please, PLEASE don't force everyone into the new look.  It's obvious there are a ton of people who truly HATE it!

I tried it for a week and found it impossible to use.  It hurts my eyes.  It's clunky and ugly.  I can't scroll longer emails, so I have to forward them to my work account and read them there.  I CAN'T READ MY EMAILS so what's the point of having email?!?!  The buttons at the top are seriously ugly and have icons that don't make a lot of sense.  Instead of jsut looking at them and seeing the word I have to hover my cursor over them.

All over ugly, clunky and NOT user friendly.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? timetomoveon 11/11/11 8:19 PM
Any good thoughts about alternatives to Google? The evidence is that they no longer listen or care. Lots of companies went this way in the past 10 years. Short the stock.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? stegallhomes 11/14/11 2:31 PM
Ok so I DO NOT Like the new look AT ALL.. I didn't get to choose whether or not I was going to change into the new look it just automatically changed.. My problem is i have a spreadsheet and on the old look when I open that spreadsheet I had the option of having multiple paged spreadsheets at the bottom and now I can't find them anywhere...
I have trusted google chrome with running my business off of it for the qualities that I have found.. but the fact that I can't find that information any more really bothers me. Because Those pages had important company info on them.. If someone can please help me find how to change it back I would appreciate it..
I have tried to find it under the second clog wheel on the right but cant find it..
Thank you
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/14/11 3:46 PM
hot.rice.sparists, the new look should not affect your messages. I've seen similar reports that turned out to result from an incompatibility with current AdBlock definitions, or from the extension Integrated Gmail. Are you using Firefox, and could you please try running Firefox in Safe Mode? I've attached a reference below. If you are using Chrome, please try an incognito browser.

stegallhomes, it sounds like you are having trouble with Google Docs. I've attached a reference for you as well.

Best,

I prefer the old look as well.  Please take into consideration that there are elderly people who just learn the basics of using the computer/emails.  When they are presented with a "new look" (though it is not dramatically different than the old one), they tend to reject it.

I agree with Farid.MI, kittieflyn, blue user, americanbadass and many, many more.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 11/16/11 6:27 PM
The new look may not be supposed to affect my messages, but I assure you it does.  Clicking on the InBox gives me less than a second to see the messages and then they are gone.  And why would I want to have to run Firefox in Safe Mode?  I want things normal.  The new look screws things up and you want me to go change other apps just so that they will work with Gmail.  Well, a freakin' clue..... Gmail USED to work just fine and dandy till you guys decided to fix something that wasn't broken.  The new look is NOT an improvement.  And it definitely isn't just a 'look', it's a FUBARed piece of software now.  At least from the perspective of your customers.  You should trade the guy who came up with this idea for a dog and then shoot the dog.

Go tell your supervisors that a crock of fertilizer is a crock of fertilizer and that this particular crock should be thrown onto the compost heap.

I'm back again - just tried using Internet Exp instead of Google Chrome and I got the old Gmail back. I still can't get rid of the new look in Google so even though I prefer Google if I can't read my mail I will have to make IE my browser and find somewhere to move my 3 Gmail accounts. I hope this size issue is something you can fix G, you were my first and I really don't want to breakup with you.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? davidbaker 11/18/11 11:05 PM
The new look BLOWS. Terrible. CONTACTS and TASKS should be their own tabs - certainly before G+ got one. Instead CONTACTS/MAIL is hidden under yet a SECOND click with a drop.

In messages, it only shows one name now for past messages so you cannot see who is on the CC + BCC.

ALL TO, CC + BCC should always be shown!

I'm ready to go back to Outlook.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 11/18/11 11:53 PM
If Google has even a minor clue, and cares what their customers think, then they will throw this idea on the scrap heap where it belongs.  All these comments and if there is a single one that is positive, then I missed it.  Google made this site for feedback, I sure hope that it will be used.  Fire the person who came up with this crappy idea and get back to business.  If you force the new look on me, I'll go elsewhere.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? whoelsewould 11/20/11 1:29 PM
The new look is just too busy, too bright, too cluttered, too hard to read, too hard to take a simple overview and has a commercial feel to it.

I really love gmail (and google) but to force us to "switch to the new look" seems very "un-googlish" Can't we have a choice? Can we not stay with the "old look" without constantly being hassled to "switch to the new look"

Even if we "switch back to the old look" the word "temporarily" is included. We get a choice for a little while and then we have to like it go somewhere else?

Did the U.S. Government take over Gmail or something?
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? musicollector 11/20/11 8:08 PM
I accidentally went to the new look - it sucked the big one - and I reverted to the old look "temporarily". Well, I don't want to go back to it TEMPORARILY. I want the old look to co-exist in parallel to the new look, if you insist on the new look. Or else, it it is time to leave GMail, which I have used since its inception. :(

Google, do not ram it down the throats of those who despise the new look, if you know what is good for you!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? balsimonmgt 11/20/11 11:47 PM
@musicollector - where will you go? despite your misgivings (some of which I share), who has a better email client - free or paid?

The folks at Gmail know that they have the superior product/service and thus they don't have need be responsive to your or my complaints. Look at how they totally ignore the huge segment of their users who would like the ability to sort on columns (as you can with virtually any other database in the WORLD!). Sure - there are work-arounds, but if the Gmail crew gave a rip, they'd give the specification for the ability to sort to an intern who would have it knocked out before lunch, tested before 5 o'clock and deployed the next day - if they wanted to do it.

For whatever reason they don't and they know people like me aren't going anywhere. I think it will be the exact same kind of response relative to Gmail's look-and-feel. When you have no competition, what's the pressure to be responsive?
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 11/21/11 12:50 AM
@balsimonmgt  Who has a better client?  Well, for free nobody that I know of or I would already be using it.  But I will go back to Hotmail rather than put up with this piece of garbage.  As I said, I can't even evaluate the garbage because it won't even show me my email messages.  Well, I get about a half second peek at them and then nothing shows up in any folders.  The Gmail mouthpiece on this forum says that shouldn't happen.  Really?  I thought it was just an undocumented design feature meant to save us all time in having to read messages.  Of course it shouldn't happen.  That is a Microsoft answer, something that is totally true but totally unhelpful in solving my problem.

Hotmail just doesn't play nice with Firefox so far as remembering who I am and signing me in automatically, but that won't stop me from leaving Gmail if they want to persist in their silly little games.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? balsimonmgt 11/21/11 4:56 AM
I understand hotrice... I am inferring from my own experience and the reports I see from others here and elsewhere that the experience of the new look varies significantly from user to user. For example, I have no difficulty with the new look, though it did take a little getting use to, and there are some things in the old UI that I preferred. For me, the change has been slight and mainly aesthetic.  For you, clearly the change has been borderline traumatic.

I am not defending Gmail in any way for their lack of insight and esp their lack of responsiveness to large portions of their userbase. As near as I can tell, it's Googaucracy all the way and either you get out of Googeland or hang on for the ride. So far, I'm hanging on.

Question: you mentioned that you know of no free clients that are better; how about for-pay clients?
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 11/21/11 5:05 AM
@balsimonmgt  The pay-for client is something that I will ask my computer guru about.  He does some kind of sys admin work and generally has a suggestion about anything I want to do.  He hosts my domain and he's the one that suggested I set up a Gmail account and have all my email copied to the account so I can access my email more easily wherever I go.  I liked it and so set up another Gmail account for more casual correspondence on the web so as to try to prevent junk mail on my main account.  Check the box so you get notified of additional messages here and hopefully I'll have an answer soon.

We don't want pretty - we want usability.

If you don't understand what I'm saying here, email me. I will give you the solutions.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? balsimonmgt 11/21/11 12:21 PM
thanks hotrice - I will await your reply. When I checked, I didn't find ANY that did the things that makes Gmail superior - especially labels combined with truly robust filters (though the filters should be MUCH easier to create and edit). So far, no other client I've seen has these two in synergy with each other.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/21/11 1:44 PM
jrsully13 - it sounds like you might have accidentally shrunk the text in your browser. Please try holding Ctrl (or Cmd on a Mac) and hit 0. This should "normalize" your text. You can also hold Ctrl/Cmd and hit + to make the text bigger.

hot.rice.sparists - third-party extensions can sometimes interfere with websites. I suspect you are using AdBlock Pro. Some users had trouble with AdBlock Pro until they updated that extension. Please try updating the extension. You can also test in Safe Mode to figure out whether an extension is causing the issue.

Everyone else, we are switching to the new look because we have found, based on user studies and other data, that it is better than the old look. We have actually updated Gmail's look several times in the past, and each time we eventually retired the previous version. If you have been with Gmail since the start, you may remember that the Basic HTML version used to be your Gmail experience. We do maintain the Basic HTML version of Gmail for compatibility with older browsers, but we wanted to be honest with you that we will not maintain other past looks of Gmail indefinitely.

In the meantime we are reading all of your feedback and working on making the new look better.

Best,
Sarah
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? NathanD 11/21/11 2:03 PM
Sarah,

The Display Density settings only have an effect if you make the browser window extremely wide. At my preferred width (1024px), all the settings look like Compact, which is usable only with great effort.

Why is this? Shouldn't I be able to use my preferred window width with my preferred display density, rather than be forced to choose one?
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 11/21/11 2:19 PM
@NathanD   Well, a normal person would think that, yes, you should be able to use your preferred width and display density.  Why make you choose?  Because the people who designed this piece of crap either didn't know what they were doing or were just too lazy to try.  And Sarah, where are these other user studies and other data?  Where did you test it, in a kindergarten?  Maybe teach them to check first the left box, then the right.  Then the left and then the right.  Then you just fill in the questions where you need them and presto chango, you have your positive data.

I used to work in management in a company that took their main product, redesigned it and ended up throwing the baby out with the bathwater.  It made my job much more difficult both in dealing with customers and employees, was as of as high of a quality as the previous version of the product, the guy in charge of making the presentation couldn't even use the product effectively and nobody really liked it.  But they sucked it up and did their best.  I quit. I would rather be the PR person for Kim Jong-il than have your job.  I could at least Photoshop all his pics and give him a good haircut and prevent him from looking so funny.  You don't even have the authority to make any changes.  You're just someone that they stuck out here for the angry mob to throw bricks at.

I use AdBlock, but not Pro.  And I just updated it.  And the problem STILL exists.  Well, on my favorite browswer, Firefox.  Strange, Chrome doesn't have that problem.  Who makes Chrome?  OOHHHH!  Google.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/21/11 2:33 PM
Hey NathanD,

I've seen a few other similar requests. Compact is the same display density as the old look, actually. We're looking into ways to make Gmail look better on smaller screens if you prefer "Cozy" or "Comfortable."

Best,
Sarah
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/21/11 2:36 PM
Hey hot.rice.sparists,

AdBlock works by blocking elements of websites from displaying. For some reason, in some versions of AdBlock, it is blocking the elements of Gmail that display your messages. This doesn't have anything to do with using Firefox or using Chrome, but merely with AdBlock guessing and mis-identifying parts of Gmail to block. You could create an exclusion in AdBlock for mail.google.com so that AdBlock doesn't mess with Gmail's code at all, or you could try completely uninstalling and possibly re-installing a different version of AdBlock.

Best,
Sarah

Yes the new gmail look gave me a headache! New emails condensed or not condensed was confusing!!! All i want is the exact same thing with google voice fully intergrated.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? nelliem 11/21/11 2:46 PM
Imagine all the people who don't know about this forum. I am sure they will stop using the web based look. Old people i feel sorry for.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? NathanD 11/21/11 2:47 PM
Sarah,

I'm not sure why you think the screen size is relevant. I'm talking about the width of the browser window.

Personally, I make my browser windows as tall as possible but very narrow. For instance, right now it has a width of 900 but a height of 1060. The Cozy or Comfortable settings would look just fine as they are... *IF* someone hadn't decided that they were not "permissible."

(Why would they be impermissible in any case, though? I can understand why you'd *suggest* a denser layout to someone with a smaller screan, but why on earth would you just disallow them using a sparser one? I just don't understand.)
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? NathanD 11/21/11 2:52 PM
Sarah,

You also wrote "Compact is the same display density as the old look, actually."

This is definitely not true on my browser. The "old look" appears to be almost but not quite as sparse as Cozy. Compact is significantly more dense than the "old look" in a way that is immediately obvious upon loading it. I'm using Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686 on x86_64; rv:6.0.2) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/6.0.2.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? balsimonmgt 11/21/11 3:18 PM
Sarah - this is OT a bit, but since I have an actual GMail rep here, I think it would be helpful (to me, anyway) to ask: What about sorting on the different fields? PLEASE answer one way or another. Has GMail ruled that out and if so why? Lots and lots of users ask for this ability over and over and over again and all I've seen are other users telling me that I don't need it. Who are they to tell me what I may or may not need. It IS a business decision for GMail to make. Either you want to meet my and other users' requests or you don't - and let the chips fall where they will. But please - let me know without telling me what I should want or not want.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? NathanD 11/21/11 3:24 PM
Sarah, that's great. Thanks for reading and passing it along.

Give the OPTION to keep the old look. I do not care if i miss out on the new "features". I do not want them. Let me continue to use the gmail i signed up for and have been using for a long time now. If you force such changes without the option to at least revert to the old look others and my self will simply leave.

Sarah, please respond with WHY Google is choosing to ignore us and not give us this option. So far you have ignored all the posts about this and its getting very frustrating.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? mayaleah 11/21/11 7:31 PM
Sarah:

What I specifically don't like about the new look is the extra scoll bar on the left side, which is supposed to help with the labels.  However, on my laptop, it is very difficult to position my mouse on the tiny area which activates the left side scroll bar.  I can't click on the screen and then just use the arrow keys to move my labels up and down.  It's very frustrating!  Also, I hate that the chat pops up and down if you accidentally put your mouse too close to it.  Again, I am just trying to see the rest of my labels, not activate the chat!!

Also, the spacing, even in the compact form, is not as nice as the old version.

Why are is google forcing this change?

I might add that when I switched to the new look, a button to "provide feedback" kept popping up.  I provided feedback on 4 different occasions.  AND THE BUTTON STILL POPPED BACK UP!!  It is very frustrating.

Sarah:

Just thought of another thing I dislike.  In the new version, you can only see names, instead of e-mail addresses, in the "to" line.  Also, I can't copy and paste e-mail addresses directly from the "to" line.  Instead, I have to click on an additional arrow button in order to pull up a screen where there are e-mail addresses to copy and paste.  I liked it better when I could click on "show details" and it simply appeared in the same screen, instead of a popup window.

The old look seems better to me!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 11/22/11 2:01 AM
@Sarah   Nothing to do with Chrome or Firefox.  Then splain this.... I installed Chrome and suddenly the new look works.  I can open Firefox and it still doesn't work.  The old version works fine.  So you're saying that you guys at Google decided to screw with us some and make it so it doesn't work with AdBlock just for fun and giggles?

@ corallinshanshan  The old either looks better or is preferred by almost everyone on here.  Is Google going to listen?  Of course not.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ansak 11/22/11 6:54 AM
Sarah:

I also VASTLY prefer the old look to the new look.

I have tried compact look. it doesn't help.
I have looked at "theme options". They do not answer the bell.
You say "the new look shouldn't affect your messages" but on another thread there are numerous complaints that the new look is routing replies to the trash and moving other messages around in a most unhelpful way.

The number one thing that I depend on that the new look does not give me is the subtle shading that colours (yes, I am Canadian) the currently selected folder extending that colour off to the right and brackets the list of e-mails top and bottom.

I'm bumping into this tendency a lot nowadays: we'll make it cleaner! simpler! less cluttered! (tabletization? only good for tablet owners.) The results are
* a Windows Start Menu that power users can't use, so it stops getting used and Microsoft has decided to remove entirely in Windows 8 !!? !!?
* don't get me started on Windows Ribbons vs. Menus that can be accessed by keyboard accelerators.
* Gnome 3 -- which I'm beginning to like a bit although I'm back using xfce4 and I would be ecstatic if my distro supported Gnome 2 side-by-side
* Unity
* the GHASTLY! new Windows Mobile look (what am I? a four year old? or an octogenarian with cataracts? who comes up with this stuff)
* and now, GMail's new look.

Apparently nothing is sacred. A word to the google-plex: if you allow the old look to continue in perpetuity (AND KEEP ON SUPPORTING IT!!! -- though I could understand if you tail it off to nothing by not offering to new users and not adding all the latest bells and whistles to it -- in fact, this crowd probably doesn't want, for instance, ever closer, closer integration with "plus" for instance) all this wrath will go away. That's probably the only fix. Anything else will look, smell, feel evil and your "slogan" is still out there for all of us to see...

This "upgrade" annoys me, but it doesn't affect me as much as it does many others because I'm still enough of a dinosaur that I only use GMail to read the mail mobile-ly when not at home. When at home, I still POP3 it off into a real e-mail client. I could develop this into a rant aimed at the wrath-niks, but I'll forebear.

The #1 help with the new look that I and many other users want is: "Don't force me to migrate to it." I've tried it. It doesn't work for me. I've tried the other options you suggest. They don't help. The current orthodoxy of "clean and simple" goes too far. Don't force us to go there. Until that option is available, this torrent of annoyance will continue, I'm afraid.

cheers...ank

Hi again, thank you for the specific feedback (scrollbars, email addresses) about the things you'd like to see us improve in the new look. I'll share it with the team.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? balsimonmgt 11/22/11 11:21 AM
Sarah - before you go away - can you at least point me to any discussion where the GMAIL TEAM - not a fellow user - has said yea or nay on Gmail Sort. Again - there is a HUGE segment of GMail's userbase that wants this. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=3206cd3d9cde361f&hl=en&start=40

I know it's off topic for this, but you folks don't exactly make it easy to have a conversation with you. You sort of come in out of the blue like Gods off the Asgard rainbow or down from Mt. Olympus. I'm not complaining too much, since overall I like GMail, BUT it's sort of like an itch in the middle of your back, where you ... just ... can't ... reach ... to scratch it.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/22/11 11:58 AM
Hi balsimonmgt, we don't have plans to implement sorting in the near future. We are aware of the feature request and I can't say what will happen down the road.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? delnquent 11/22/11 12:02 PM
Just made the switch, today ... looks like I missed a lotta bugs?

Just a thought, maybe ya'd upset a lot less people by making some attempts to retain their "old" theme, and "density".  It only took me a few seconds to change it back.  But I see no reason Google couldn't've done this.

As it is, I have no serious problems with the "new" look.

It would be nice, if I could change the color and/or "brightness" of various items (i.e. "read messages", "new messages", and "hover").  At which, it would be nice if the message over which you hover the mouse reverses the colors or otherwise "highlights" the entire row (that little indicator on the far left is completely useless).

Other than that ... just a couple cosmetic things ... the "magnifying glass" button at the top ... it doesn't match my "theme" ... its bright blue.  Also, the "Compose" button is nearly white, whereas, all the other buttons are dark grey.  It's in the same place ... I really don't need any help finding it.

Along that line ... the buttons are a bit big ... unnecessarily so.  As is the "Mail" drop-down.

I've chosen "compact" ... but the buttons, aren't.

Thanks!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? balsimonmgt 11/22/11 12:04 PM
Hi Sarah,

Thank you very much for the reply. I truly do appreciate it, though I remain mystified as all get out as to why. Seems like such a little thing to implement that would reap huge rewards from your user community. As I said, it's a business decision for Google to make. One thing to pass on to your team if you can: given the size of your userbase, just think of all the man-decades lost through having to use partially effective (at best) work-arounds because a simple thing like this can't find its way off the cutting room floor.

Again - thank you for replying.
- Bal
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 11/22/11 12:34 PM
Hey Bal, no problem. I will say it's not quite as simple as it seems; it is more technically complex than one might think due to some of Gmail's unique design features. In the meantime we do have search, which we think is better in most situations.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? FerrisBuehler 11/22/11 12:55 PM
Well folks, we all know that Google doesn't care what we think...they are going to force the "new" GMail down our throats one way or another....BUT, we don't have to use it!  We can switch.  Most of us have two email accounts anyway.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? balsimonmgt 11/22/11 1:43 PM
Hi Sarah -

I consider myself something of a quasi-power user of GMail - I use advanced searches; I save them under quicklinks; I have filters that are nested 2 and 3 layers deep. All of this complexity - created at an super-time-consuming piece-by-piece level - largely because I can't sort columns. I'd likely be able to reduce the complexity of my folder structure by 2/3rds if I could sort on Sender and Date/Time received. I should create a video that shows the real-time duration of what I believe I'm up against here.

In any event - I'm not a techie, so I'll take it as given that GMail techs simply aren't up to what is child's play in Yahoo Mail, Mail.com, Thunderbird, Outlook, and on and on - the ability to sort on almost any column. What still seems odd is that you have indicated that there are no plans to implement it. Given the strength of the signal coming from your userbase, I would think it could at least be put on GMail's roadmap as with the meta-data: "nice-to-have" and "strongly desired by lots of GMail users" and maybe a third "but we don't wanna do it." (Sorry for the sour spin - I don't mean it in any overly intense way - my precision of language isn't as good as I'd like it to be.)

Again - I appreciate the answer. Unless there's something salient that I'm missing, I'll consider the entire question of Sort in GMail closed and dead and will be pleasantly surprised if I ever see it.

Kind Regards,
Bal

Themes are for children. I run a multi million dollar company through Google gmail and it is plain horrible the new look.

It really does amaze me that such a smart company can get it so wrong!

The look of their sites (apart from original 'Google.com' itself) isn't working and those artists shouldn't be around.
Even Google's social networking sites, now C'mon with your reach you telling me you can't crack Facebook.

I'll let you know why & listen up..., your designers have got it so very wrong on all the sites you create.

Just trying to be honest, not have a dig.

Sarah,

The biggest problem is that I can switch back, but only TEMPORARILY until Google forces this change down our throats like so much other garbage that the company has "decided" is in the "best interest" of the L-users who subscribe to Google services... Yes, L-users, because that is how I feel that Google appreciates those of us that are still using the Google services... Overwhelmingly people hate the new look, take a lesson from New Coke and give us Google Classic - something that we know and actually like using... The only thing I can say is THANK GOD FOR POP3... I will rarely ever have to look at the "new" piece of $h!t that you Google is throwing at me...

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? balsimonmgt 11/23/11 8:19 PM
While it is true that the overwhelming perspective in this thread is that the new look is awful, that's not necessarily representative of the entire userbase.

What I don't get is that there is no effort on the part of the GMail team to truly accommodate (just like with Sort) the significant portion of the userbase that likes the old look.  It really does seem very odd that Google is at odds (or at least seems to be at odds) with the dictum: give the customer what s/he wants rather than what you think s/he ought to want.

Is there really no way to make the old look one of the themes of the new look, a kind of GMail Classic?
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? JL. 11/24/11 3:19 PM
I don't like the new look. And that is not even the point.

The point is Google does not respect user's time.

Think about millions/billions of people trying to navigate the new look. An extra few minutes everyday for the first 2 months?
With LITTLE in return. That amounts to counter productivity.

Oh I know Gmail is free. But people's time is not.

This is just like Microsoft keep rolling out new versions of OP and Office.

I am one of the oldest users of of gmail, and I could qualify for a power user, but Sara, I got to tell you this new look is just making my work difficult. Google and gmail has been all about being simple, easy, clear, fast, error-free, a time saver. This new look is none of the above. Now that I have changed it, can not find a way to go back! If we really want to improve gmail, how about giving an option of FWD multiple emails at the same time. How about increasing number of accounts you can POP. How about making send email 'using company servers' a little easier to set up? I could tell you more stuff which if you would do; me and millions other like me would love to see on gmail, if you are interested. But for now, please give me my old look back!

Thanks

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Becky Bear 11/26/11 12:53 PM
Thanks for the info on how to go back to the old look. I was totally panicking. I thought I had completely ruined my email account.

The new look is horrible. All "bells and whistles" at the expense of function. What good is a pretty screen, if you can no longer easily access the information you need?

I never use the Chat window, but with the new look, no matter how small I make it, it still covers up about half of my labels, which I use constantly. When I point to the area with the labels, the Chat window minimizes to an icon at the bottom (which is still in the way, but less so). However, the minute I move the mouse pointer away, it pops back up and blocks the information that I need to see. I need to be able to see all my labels without having to use the pointer all the time. With the old look, I don't see the Chat window or its icon at all unless I intentionally scroll down to it, and that's what I want. The new look is completely unacceptable.

I don't know what I'll do if the new look is forced upon us, but I certainly can't work with it the way it is now. I wish the Google developers would think more about the practical use of the program instead of just looking for ways to make flashier visuals. I don't want any pictures in the background no matter how beautiful they are. I just want to be able to efficiently use my email (which is for business), but every time Google "upgrades" the look to be more visually attractive, they make the application clumsier and more frustrating to work with it. It's a very pretty package with nothing inside it.

I'd love to see Google forget about making Gmail "prettier" and work on making it easier to use (with fewer, not more, mouse clicks).

I can only pray that we're given the option to stay with the current look when they're ready to launch the "new look." For many of us, the new look will render Gmail useless and will create a nightmare having to set up a new non-Gmail account and notify all our contacts of our new email address.

My stomach is in a knot with anxiety right now, and I suspect it's going to only get worse.

I'll start looking for a new email client right away. With any luck, I might be able to get everything transferred before the new look crashes down on us.

Sadly,

Becky Bear

Let me ALSO agree with everyone here.  The "old look" is better.  The layout of information, the color schemes, the buttons are better defined and my eyes don't go cross when reading information - especially layers of email threads.

I don't want to "temporarily" stay with the "old" gmail - I like the old layout; and after spending 30 days with the "new" layout - I STILL don't like it.  Even with facebook's new layout - I found myself adjusted after several days.  With GMAIL - I'm still frustrated with the layout.  Not cool - when my business runs through GMAIL most of the day.

A Big "NO" to GMAIL's new layout.

p.s. I came across this page after spending a good part of my day looking for HOW TO remove the "new layout."  I have waaay more important things to do than even write this response - but I find myself passionate about it and frustrated because GMAIL is such a large portion of my work day.

How do I get out of using Google? This is look changing is really bothering me. It's like someone walking into my house and rearranging the furniture. I think it's very presumptuous. I never thought about these things till now, but now I just don't want to use their products, free or not. I mean, I breathe free air, I can choose not to be in an environment if I don't like the way it smells.
I use gmail and chrome, nothing fancy. Any help would be appreciated.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ansak 11/29/11 7:20 AM
@umi963 et al., here's what you can do

(I don't work for pobox or any Linux distro -- this is just what I find to be the best way to work)

Step 1. Use Thunderbird (or some other e-mail client but avoid MS-Outlook and Outlook Distress) to download (and delete) your e-mail from GMail. Organizing folders is not hard and the search utilities in a good e-mail client do well enough that you won't notice not being on GMail.

Downside 1. you must understand that you'll have to deal with having a large enough hard disk, managing the reliability of your system etc.

Downside 2. will this be on a desktop or a notebook? if you can't bring your computer with you, there'll be a limit to how much of your old e-mails you'll be able to see. If it's a notebook, you'll have to worry about physical and data security. I recommend using a popular distro of Linux (Ubuntu or Fedora) so as not to be systemically vulnerable to Windows problems.

Step 2. Decide on an e-mail forwarder (like pobox.com) where you can park a permanent e-mail address, forwarding it to wherever you rest next. pobox gives you good virus and spam scanning, too. I find google doesn't have much left to scan once pobox has done its work. Forward it to your gmail account for now.

Step 3. Send out your very last change-of-e-mail address notice to your friends, to your pobox.com or other permanent forwarding address.

Step 4. You have an ISP, right? There are some e-mail addresses you get for free there, right? Forward your permanent address there. Be sure that the connection is as secure as possible, though. Lean on your ISP to provide SMTP over SSL and POP/IMAP over SSL to access your messages. But once you've done that, you can cut off your connection to GMail on your own terms.

I have to say, this new look is really bad, terrible..
Not only just the look and feel, but the performance is much worse comparing with old one.
It takes 5-10 sec to start download when I clicked on attachment..

Switching back to old looks. Won't try new look for at least 1/2 year..

Google need to do some better job in sending out new versions!!   Don't treat all the users as your beta testers!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 11/30/11 2:54 AM
Well, I installed Chrome and it worked.  Already pointed that out.  And for some reason, after opening Firefox and using it several times, the new look simply started working.  That solves at least part of the problem for me, at least it works if I want to use Firefox now.  But I STILL do not like the interface and I STILL do not want to spend time learning the in's and out's of the new look and I STILL don't like the new look being forced down my throat.

*Sob!* Leave Gmail ALO-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-NE!!!!! BOO-Hoooh!! *SOB!* Ple-E-E-E-E-E-E-A-SE!!!!!!!!!!

If this thing is really going to be rammed unceremoniously down our already hoarse and voiceless throats, I'm going back to Hotmail or Yahoo. I abandoned Hotmail for Gmail a long time ago and have gotten so used to Gmail Classic, but right now Hotmail is looking extremely sexy....

@ansak

That's the best thing I've ever read so far on the Net about the new (blasted) Gmail! Thank YOU!  Can you please do us all a huge favour and set up a site/page/blog with that info? And earn some dollars from Big Fat G at the same time, yeah!!

The new look is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!
Back with the old look, please!!

Nobody likes the new look, its too confused, and looks like an old Windows 95, i love gmail and i pay every year to have more gigas.... i PAY FOR IT.

Please, back with the old look, this new one is very very very ugly, bad, horrible and confuse.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? mrose4 11/30/11 9:53 PM
It is not that it is just new and there are things to learn.  If that were it, not so bad.  You could learn them or not.  But the fact that the email loses so much real estate and the font becomes so compact and close you cannot read it and it kills your eyes to try does matter.

Email is for reading.  Most of us spend a fair amount of time on our computers anyway and the old eyes get VERY tired. And others don't have perfect vision anyway.  Those themes are garish and stand out.  The email is way too small to see and everything else on the page takes over.  The new look HURTS OUT EYES!  Does that mean nothing to you?

Gmail does an excellent job of filtering out spam.  We like that we can see when our main contacts are online.  We like to sort our mail into folders, etc.  My family and friends invited each other to Gmail right from the first and we have loved it.  But not the new look.

We don't need all that much more.  If you want to do new things with it, keep to the real estate that does not effect the part of the screen where we read our email.

Being able to read  our email is the main idea.
Why are you forgetting that?
Do you really want to go the way of Netflix?
Do you intend to take away the legibility of our email because YOU want a new look and you don't want to give us the option to keep the old one?  Obviously not taking the user into account and don't even care?

What an odd way to treat us.  Did you really think about this before you even took the options away to keep the old look?

Sounds like Netflix...only in spades.

As I told Netflix...there are other ways to see movies...there are other ways to view online, rent movies, get dvds into our homes, etc.  Ticking off users and customers doesn't get you anywhere.  People use you instead of others for a reason.  You are taking us for granted so much you think you can just do what you want and everyone will stay anyway even if it puts them out and they don't like using it.  WRONG!

There is other email, too. Email we may not have preferred to gmail before....but at least WE CAN SEE IT!

Ticking off users leads to boycotting.  People can and do leave things, you know.  No matter if you tweak gmail to baby sit, walk the dog, water the lawn and run errands...along the edges....if people cannot read their email and it hurts their eyes to try....What's the point?  They won't use it!

They don't have to!

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? emfung 12/1/11 2:49 AM
Dear GMAIL, the new look isn't really bad. But it strain my eyes more than before. The "contrasts" are lost. Can you keep the "rounded corner" style of each messages in the threaded view. It helps my eyes to separate the messages better. Else, customize the colours of the messages based on sender and recipient. To compare, yahoo mail's new look is way better. But I love the threaded feature in gmail. Until Yahoo gets threaded, I will not switch.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Guar V 12/1/11 1:57 PM
You know, I was kind of okay with the new layout until yesterday when you abruptly changed navigation menus. Most of us like being able to get through our e-mail efficiently--why are you trying to make it take more steps to click on things I want to use?

1. I still have the option to customize which of my labels are visible/hidden in the side panel, but you have taken away my ability to view them anyhow. Now the entire side panel is hidden and I have to mouse over it any time I want to access a label besides my inbox. (And why is there no way to make the menu permanently/temporarily stay down for your whole session?)

2. Putting all the Google menu items into a drop-down button is not only a waste of time because, again, I have to click through an extra menu just to find Docs or Photos, but--it also doesn't save any space, because the black bar at the top is still there.

3. I've said this at least twice now in feedback, but: Bring back the option to have text-only buttons. I am not five years old. I don't need pictures. Especially since half of them don't make any sense and I (again) have to hover the mouse until a text label comes up anyway to explain that the weird file button is apparently "archive" when it looks like it should mean "download."

4. Stop trying to bury the sign-out button. Yes, I know you collect more information for ads when people forget to log out and then go surf the web, but this is getting ridiculous. It shouldn't require a search party to sign out of my own account.

5. Find someone who actually understands aesthetics to choose your color schemes and design your layout, because right now it's atrocious. Most new laptops, and virtually all tablets, have glossy screens--meaning that glare is a huge consideration when it comes to readability. I tested every single color/theme option for the new Gmail and I could barely read my screen using any of them because of poor color contrasts and/or poor color combinations. I finally went with plain black & white, and that was so bright it hurt my eyes. And then there's the layout: huge hunks of dead space; ugly, boxy design; and no clear delineation between the side menus and the content of the inbox.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Guar V 12/1/11 2:11 PM
Also, sorry to double-post, but I can't edit my previous message:

If you are trying to switch back to the old format and you are stuck with the newest menus -- there is only one "gear" in the top right corner now. If you click on it, the choice to switch back should be in the middle of the list.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? tanstaafl_au 12/1/11 2:35 PM
I'm dreading when there is no choice but to change.

I hate how Google decides what we should like best.

But still prefer gmail over those other choices, so gonna have to take the bad force people into design with the good bits.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? cbreeze 12/2/11 4:46 PM
Please fix the contrast. I HATE the new look. I want everything to be laid out in ONE page to me, not compressed. How do I remember my documents if I can't see them in one page????
I  like an improved search function. It is really hard to search in partial words now. I also like to be able to search even if I can't remember the correct spelling esp in a name.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? FrozenFlower 12/3/11 1:54 PM
The new design is very annoying. What I like is simplicity and usability, what I don't like is trying something just for the sake of coolness. Dear Google, if you feel it's time to change, please don't fix things that were not broken in the first place. You could do nice design and add lots of JavaScript if you feel like it, but without hiding the navigation menu under annoying scroll bar. This doesn't make sense at all. Thanks.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? dv8tion 12/3/11 3:42 PM
This may be a dumb question that has already been asked, but if people are being recommended to get the same amount of mail as before, why would they move to something that doesn't actually benefit them? A system that is efficient in motion is far more than one which needs to be learned and does exactly the same thing... No?

I would recommend instead to use a real email client like Thunderbird which plays very nicely with gmail and can be changed around, but doesn't have anyone make any wild claims over the design being an email client. If you're going to need to change, might as well change to the better than just slightly different  :)
http://www.mozilla.org/

This animated menu bug(heh) that Google has on their backsides is completely annoying and distracting.  Give me something that is slightly dull and that I don't have to mouse over to find and things that do multiple functions to be efficient, and I will be happy. Because I will be able to GSD.

Level with me, how long until we will be forced to change to the new "look" without an option to opt-out. I realize Google has become ubiquitous in our culture but last I checked we still have freedom of speech and free will.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ansak 12/5/11 9:29 PM
Hi, Sarah,

The outstanding questions that are on most people's minds in this forum are, ultimately these:

1. Will we, in the end, be unable to use the current look of GMail?

2. When will this transition be complete?

I will look at the new look but I would prefer the comfort of knowing that Google listens to its users more closely than to its "User Experience Experts". We are a much larger group of people than your UE team could possibly be. If you do not listen to us, then ultimately, we will feel that you have foresworn your mythic motto: "Don't Be Evil."

please, continue not being evil...ank
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ansak 12/5/11 9:46 PM
Hi, Sarah,

I looked again. I'm still not happy. There still isn't a highlight of the current folder that surrounds the message list and separates individual messages. That's all the "high contrast" I need, thank you.

When I left the new look, the button I wanted was still missing. The options were, "Keep the New Look" and "Revert to the old look temporarily". I still want, "Revert to the old look permanently."

That's the only answer the bulk of these people will be happy with. As for the GoogleBar, there's an old and not very kind name for that sort of thing: "Mystery Meat Interface". Avoid it, please: http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/mysterymeatnavigation00.html

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? samsdlaw 12/6/11 4:35 PM
Add my name to the "hate the new look" crowd.

1. Hard defined boxes. Black lines delineating where one section ends and another begins. The old look was superior in that I knew where each section of my mail is.

2. Picture only buttons. As others have said. I am not a child. I am literate. I can read words. Simple boxes run faster.

3. I shouldn't have to spend valuable time to dicker with density settings and themes and contrasts and whatever else. I am far too busy to spend time trying to customize my gmail settings so that I can find the features that I want. Furthermore, hiding features/buttons to make me dig for them only serve to frustrate me and waste time.

4. I find it horrible that the option to remain with the "old system" is not an option. If you want to make new accounts into the old system, fine. However, those of us who have had gmail accounts for a while and are used to the layout should at least have the ability to have the "gmail classic" look and feel.

5. Suggestion would be to at least allow a "Gmail Classic" as an option, even if you have older users specifically opt-in to it.

Google's blind obsession with competing with or beating Bookface is causing them to be pushy with changing everything about something to which a vast number of people have responded well.  Gewgall will learn the hard lesson if it continues to be a techno-bully. Remember, if we wanted crappy looking email we can get that anywhere. The ironic thing is that we can go get the other guys' email (here's where google should pay attention, because that "free" email comes with advertising attached, remember?), and then use Gurgle's search engine, and not have to put up with the bullying.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Guest Poster 12/7/11 6:18 AM
How can I permanently keep the "old look" of Gmail?

The old buttons on top of list of emails in inbox make it much easier to organize.  With the "new look" it is harder to read my email, I can no longer access my folders ("Labels") as easily or quickly see when emails  were sent in a long string of emails or from whom (without hovering over each and every email triangle).  This is NOT because I need "training" or "time to get used to the new view".  These are genuine functional issues for ME.  If there are enough of us that prefer the old look, is it possible to keep the old look?
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? D_Money_in_FL 12/7/11 6:36 AM
Gurgle's CEO wakes up one morning recently, and does a search for discussion topics about "Gurgle's wonderful New Look". What do you suppose he sees? Duuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Helllooooooo Gurgle, are any of these microphones on???? Has everyone at Gurgle gone mad? Listen and listen well, my fellow techie brothers and sisters: It matters not what YOU think of a way of doing something like email; what really matters is the opinion (subjective as it is) of those who will be using it every day, all day. Heck, if they want all the emails to arrive with a ship's foghorn, and that's what it takes to please almost all of them, you do it, and shake your head and say, I'm glad they wanted US to make that horrible thing for them, instead of another company; now WE get their business, and therefore the AD REVENUE that makes the company where I am employed a profit, which ensures that my paycheck doesn't bounce! You don't say screw you people, we know what's best for you. So many folks right now are in denial of reality about how a job is created.(Barring and excepting gov't-politicians'- interference and meddling) A job is created when and only when a person who performs a service or produces a product that is under high enough of a demand that he can no longer meet that demand, and he must employ someone else to help him do that thing;otherwise, it's a losing business model which will fail every time.Go ahead and try to employ (pay) more people than you need, and see where it goes.  See where Gurgle goes when they thumb their noses at the folks who provide their profit-the people who used to use Gurgle email.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Ironhandx 12/7/11 8:19 AM
Hi  Sarah,

Since google employees seem to be reading this post I'm going to toss my feedback in here as well as submitting it.

Namely: Gmails standard look wasn't broken. It had hideable panes that contained everything I needed down the left side and I could move where the panes were or add/remove what was displayed as needed. The buttons were easily readable, the controls for selecting new messages etc were fantastic... I stopped using mail clients because of how great the gmail interface was. I even started forwarding my work email to my gmail account and putting it into its own seperate folder.

After using the new gmail interface for just one day, I can no longer find any of the options that I just stumbled onto with the previous interface. The last interface was laid out well, things were actually SPELLED out instead of having to wait for mouseover text to figure out what the fuck icon of the week #142 means. It was clean and full featured and just over all great. It was intuitive to the point that finding features was never a problem. The only thing I ever had to get help with on gmail previously was some imap settings that weren't even related to the interface.

Just now I had to search just to figure out how to get rid of this stupid new interface.

Sarah, Change for Changes sake isn't a good thing. This new interface is just that. Change for Change's sake. There is no need for it and it is in every way worse. The only thing that works almost as well as it used to is google chat.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Mr.Reo 12/7/11 10:08 AM
I switched back to the old look bc I drag and drop labels all the time, and the movable chat covers up my labels and I can not move it off the screen, the covered labels slows me down bc it defeats the drag and drop effectiveness.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? getthegoose 12/7/11 11:35 AM
I use email for both business and personal, especially business. Working on my emails is a significant part of my daily life.

I NEED, not want, my email service to be SIMPLE, FAST and EFFICIENT for (a) reading my emails, (b) responding to my emails, and (c) managing my EMAIL contacts. I am NOT interested in social media/networks in the least! I do NOT want social media stuffed down my throat every time I do my emails. If I wanted social media, I damn well know where to go to get them! I can make my own choices, thank you!

By now, we are all very experienced Internet users. We have constantly used the Internet for more than 10 years, some for 15 or more years. Almost all of us started our online life with emails. Email is what we have used for the longest time and are most familiar with. Some of us do not even surf the net, but cannot do without email.

We're not greenhorns about email. But neither are we all 24yo smartass digiheads who can chew up like candy 'innovative', 'cool' info tech. We're just regular, down-to-earth, practical but very busy people, who have jobs, families, responsibilities and a ton of stuff to do every day. We depend heavily on email to make our lives EASIER! Heard that? EASIER!

By re-inventing the Gmail wheel (or cog/s), Google is disrupting the lives of millions of its users.

Gmail is only third in number of email accounts (193M), after Hotmail (360M) and Yahoo (302M). It has only about 6% share of total email accounts. And yet....

This latest upgrade is just too drastic and too high-handed, and is going to piss off a hell of a lot of us. Gmail may just implode and die off. And for what? Just because Google wants to push its buggy, wimpy Google+ onto us? And it will do it at the expense of Gmail and Gmail users?

Very, very sad indeed!

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? tharealiansane 12/7/11 11:51 AM
Hi,
In my opinion the reason there are many who do not like the new theme has to do with how it seems to have a look more appealing to cyber geeks. I personally like it. The issue is that this is an email client. Not a web design portfolio or gaming site. It should be clean, uncluttered, and free of fancy shadows, transparencies, and jquery affects. You know, like the old look. Basically it looks like some jquery and css3 junkies got hold of it and went wild without thought for non-technical people who just want to see it clean and simple. Not to mention that it slows down page load. I reverted back because the old look loads faster.

Something I've also noticed in many of the google forum discussions is the excuse that problems are because people aren't using Chrome instead of one of those so called insecure or inferior browsers. Funny how MS says the same thing if they want to push IE and FF fans will say the same about Chrome and IE. There's a reason web designers (good ones -- few and far between) work hard to follow standards and also design for cross browser compatibility. If something doesn't work right in your web site it is not the fault of a browser. It's because you didn't design for cross browser compatibility.

BTW I have no feedback button or link in the bottom right corner as mentioned in a previous response. Is that Firefox's fault?
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? tharealiansane 12/7/11 11:59 AM
I agree with getthegoose. Although it doesn't bother me to see a link to a g+ account at the top of the page, gmail is for email and facebook is for social stuff. I don't see the demise of google because of it but it's a waste of time in my opinion. I had about 5 facebook friends talking about how g+ would be the death of facebook. That lasted a couple weeks and they still use facebook for social stuff. On the other side of it, I don't even know what my facebook email address is because why in the world would I use a social site like facebook for email when I have gmail?

Stick with what you do and stop trying to compete with companies that aren't even in the same field. lol unless it's MS. You can drive them into the ground.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? SBritton 12/7/11 3:14 PM
Everyone can just keep using their GMail. Just get Thunderbird or something, don't use the new look unless you have to. That way you can use their service and they make nothing on ad-revenue.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? fiftyemailaccounts 12/7/11 3:38 PM
Change does not automatically equal improvement.

Please allow the option to use the "old" look -- the one that made Gmail popular -- or I will discontinue my account.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? acolytetojippity 12/7/11 3:45 PM
I have a somewhat radical suggestion google.  How about you actually listen to your users, and let us CHOOSE!!

Google has always been about the users, doing everything they could to help us.  But all these recent design changes being forced upon us, (google in general, youtube, now gmail) have completely shattered that reputation.

Is it so difficult to give us all a little checkbox in our account setting that says "keep everything looking the way it always has"?

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? S_carrots 12/7/11 6:00 PM
Hi Sarah, I love Gmail so I'd want to continue using it. Here are just a few changes I don't like about the new look:-

1) Please give me back my old theme.
I had the desk one with the apple, thumbtacks, ink splash and pencil. The new "Desk" looks like a wooden board only. It's more than just "high-def".

2) I could see all my widgets on the left (Calendar, Chat, Task, Docs...) as I scroll down in the old layout. In the new one, I know it's more clean but I am losing my overview. And if I did not need them, I would have already removed them. (and that's what I've always liked about Google) I think clean is a good way to go, but how many people have you met who have messy desks? That image wouldn't come up so often in commercial ads if it doesn't speak to people. (For reference, book entitled "A Perfect Mess" by Eric Abrahamson & David Freedman)

3) I can only reiterate what someone has just said about the pictograms vs. spelling out. I like that Delete is "Delete" and not a bin. Not that we don't understand it, but not having to decode it first is very convenient.

As these are all just "visual" settings, I don't think it's too much to ask.
thanks for reading.

And it appears in very unpleasant way - it is impossible to close pop up window offering a new look, one must continue to the new look in order to check e-mail.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? apps for business 12/7/11 10:14 PM
For an organisation that uses Google Apps account this 'new look' is an absolute disaster. We have linked our corporate emails to the google system, so our email is now Google-based, but sends and receives in our own name, NOT Gmail.

Would anyone from Google explain why do we have to be subjected to this sudden back-stubbing on our corporate email when the business is in a full swing?

We've done considerable customising to suit Google Apps to our needs. Now we have to re-do the whole thing again! Not fair. Not smart. Not helpful. Not thoughtful.

Was there not enough feedback to simply state 'LEAVE THE OLD LOOK ALONE' ? Is it not clear that the new look initiative is an abortive work, no matter how much was paid for it?

We just arrived at considering switching to the paid version of Google Apps. I guess will have to seriously reconsider and move back to our own server, and put Gmail to rest as a piece of beautiful history that from now on will be just that ... history!

We are a design company, and in our line of business our main enemy is people's incompetence

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ansak 12/7/11 10:19 PM
Convert to LibreOffice apps for your office suite, convert to Thunderbird for e-mail (including the Lightning extension for calendaring) and you're done. (connect to GMail via POP3 and take all your e-mail off their servers).

Then, uninstall the Chrome browser from all machines.

Maybe then, Google will get the message -- but at least you'll be free of their flights of UE fancy.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ansak 12/7/11 10:24 PM
Hi, Sarah...

I read the post you cross-listed to. I sympathize with the need to get rid of legacy code (25 year geek, myself) but this is one place where a Web App doesn't quite match to a real application. If the provider "upgrades" you to a version you don't like, you may not have the freedom NOT to upgrade. That's the anger you're hearing now -- the same one Microsoft would have heard if they had forced their users to upgrade to Vista (when it wasn't ready) -- the anger I still feel when I'm forced to use 7 and its non-keyboard-only-use-friendly new user interface.

I suspect the statistics that your colleague Alex is interpreting as acceptance is actually apathy. I just talked to two more long-time GMail users who were appalled at what I told them of the new interface and its soon-coming forced upgrade. The good news for google is you'd have to lose a lot of users to have it hurt your bottom line today but this may be the beginning of the long slope down unless you take more care to keep the existing body of users happy.

These are turbulent waters and I wish you well in dealing with them, even as I am frustrated and annoyed at the course you are plotting.

cheers...ank

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? dilsharma05 12/8/11 1:26 AM
I have been using the gmail nearly for about 10 years. I tried the new look
but really don't like it and reverted to the old look. I would request Google
not to force the new look on everyone, let's have our options.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 12/8/11 2:52 AM
Couldn't find the post by Alex.  Not that it matters even a little bit.  You guys ask for feedback EVERYBODY tells you it sucks green toe jam, and then you simply proceed to tell us that you are going to do it anyway.  God, I would hate to have your job, trying to justify such crap as the New Look.

My post is on the first page and I have been having replies sent to me.  Everyone seems to hate this New Look.  So many people have said so that it even makes me wonder why anyone else would bother even voicing their opinion, well, if they have taken the time to read the other posts, especially by employees such as yourself, that show that 1) their opinion has already been stated in about every way possible and 2) you guys have no plans whatsoever to listen to the opinion of the users.  I can't make myself any clearer with the copious use of expletives.

Now unchecking the email option.  All moderators should go bugger themselves.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? charlessssssss 12/8/11 5:08 AM
I hate the new look!  It sucks, and looks like a 5th graders attempt to make web mail using HTML, circa 1993.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? charlessssssss 12/8/11 5:11 AM
@ Sarah - almost everyone here hates the new look.  Are you not reading the feedback?!?  It seems to me, regardless of what we think, Google is going ahead with this, given your suggested that we read the PM's email as to why the new look.  It is obvious that your position is entrenched and, come hell or high water, the new look is here to stay.  So, why bother to solicit feedback if you are going to ignore anything that does not dovetail with google plans?!?

Well, if forced to to the new look, I will be moving to another email provider.  Have you all not learned anything from the Google+ debacle?
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? arentsc1 12/8/11 6:12 AM
oh thank jesus.  i just switched back to the old look.  they did make the option still available.  i thought this was doomsday.  we get some more time... like a repreive from death row.  just go to your settings icon and it's still there... revert to the old look... temporarily.

it's like getting an old friend back!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? IgorVa 12/8/11 7:36 AM
How do you change to the old look? I can't seem to find the option!!!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? IgorVa 12/8/11 8:01 AM
Ok, found it, it's a gear icon, but not on the top right, but slightly lower. Confusing.
And Sarah, I hate to say it, but it seems like your product manager is a moron.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Tyton 12/8/11 9:27 AM
Where is the option to switch back to the old look? I don't LIKE this new look. I don't WANT this new look. I customise my experience to fit ME, not to fit what someone else wants my experience to be.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? devnani 12/8/11 9:50 AM
I dont know if this was already mentioned before.. but the auto scroll down to go labels from chat is really really annoying. I hope you don't stick to that feature.. make it optional.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? WalkerWalker 12/8/11 9:52 AM
The black google toolbar seems to have disappeared with the new look. I don't like the new dropdown "Google" menu, and would like to see the black bar with quicklinks come back.
Why would you make it harder to open a new tab with other google products? (calendar isn't even on the first google drop down page)

If I can turn it back on, let me know. Until then, I do not like the new look.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? ansak 12/8/11 9:59 AM
+WalkerWalker -- If you click on the "gear" there is a "switch back..." item but even then, you'll still see the "Google" menu on google.com unless you uninstall Chrome and go back to Firefox.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Devilina 12/8/11 10:06 AM
Not only do I REALLY hate the new look, which is extremely user-hostile, but I deeply resent the fact that I am now being hounded to upgrade to a later version of Firefox or switch to Google Chrome. There are several Firefox extensions that significantly improve my work productivity which have not yet been upgraded to the newer versions of FF. They are not available at all in Chrome. They stay, as does an older version of Firefox, since they are more valuable to me than Gmail.

It would seem that Google thinks they are the center of our universe and everything we do on the web must revolve around them. Give up the delusion, Google!  I have an actual life, and though I do a lot of work online, Google is by no stretch of the imagination the center of my universe. The message you are sending me, with this abortion of a new email interface, and your unwillingness to support anything but the latest, and preferably, your, browser, is that you no longer want my eyeballs to serve up to your advertisers.

You have to make it worth my while to come to you, and right now, between the loss of Google Notebook (an elegant and superior product - BTW) and this god-awful new Gmail interface, Google is the last place I want to be. You are getting waaaay too Micro$ofty for my taste!!!

I used to love Google. I used to trust Google. But you have gone to the dark side. I am so sorry to see this happening!

I didn't like the new look. It really lowered my productivity, it makes me feel lost in my inbox!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Carolanster 12/8/11 3:42 PM
I dont like it and dont want it.. I like the old one better and am against the change. I'm not against change in general.. but the old set up is good.. leave it alone!!!!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Ethan Hines 12/8/11 10:03 PM
Well folks looks like Mother Google knows best and has now made it impossible to go back to the old way. Some Democracy we have here.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 12/8/11 11:21 PM
@ Ethan Hines..I don't know how many other people noticed, but it was obvious from just the first page of comments that 1- nobody liked the new look and 2- that Google was going to do it regardless of what the feedback said.

@ coloneldax 2005.... why try?  It is only a matter of time till the change will be forced on you.  If you are going to continue to use Gmail once this happens you might as well go ahead and make the switch so you can figure out the best way to use this new piece of crap.  Or start finding another option.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? luckinrio 12/9/11 8:59 AM
God! How i can back to OLD LOOK of GMail!??
This one is horrible!
Please! I love GMail so much.. but Google did a HIGH MISTAKE doing this new weird look!!
Thks!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? luckinrio 12/9/11 9:06 AM
I FOUND IT!!! I CAN USE MY GMAIL OLD LOOK! WEEEEHHHHH!!!!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? dashcapt 12/9/11 9:41 AM
Tried it for sveral days and find it bad enough to start searching for an alternative.  It is hard on my color vision impared older eyes (same complaint from non color impared youger coworkers) and it has the same "just doesn't make sense or work" qualities of the newer Google Docs version.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 12/9/11 1:34 PM
Hey, just a quick note to thank you for your feedback. dashcapt, we're working on a contrast theme that should help; it will be available very soon.

Best,
Sarah
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? fatcake 12/10/11 9:17 AM
I don't think it's that bad. I like how you can move the chat box and condense the inbox. I think they are trying to perfect something that was already perfect, and it doesn't help that a lot of people can't accept change.

My only problem is that you can't customize the theme! No more hot guys posing at me while I read my emails.... The themes they have are cute. But if they really want Gmail to seem more personalized, it should have the option of creating your own theme/background/whatever.

Maybe you can? I don't know. I tried looking into that, but I didn't find anything, so maybe not a lot of people used it so they just dropped it. Either way, I hope Sarah's feelings aren't hurt by all these mean people! lol. I think they are heading in a good direction, but they just have to fix a few things.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Pwnznewbz 12/10/11 8:22 PM
I had to google search how to change my gmail back to the old look and came upon this string.  I'm glad I am not alone in my hatred of the new look.  Per Sarah's request, I left feedback.  It was negative feedback and I highly doubt that it would become better if I am forced to use this new version.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? kazmiworld 12/12/11 9:50 AM
well if you ever wondered Google could come up with something worse - the gmail new look is your find. They should fire the entire design team including the lead on this. What an ugly piece of work and making my eyes hurt. I can't find emails, can't find various links, lots of wasted space on the screen, and just a horrible horrible feel as soon as you sign in. oh well time to find another email service - if the strategy was to take people off gmail and save server space - give the team who developed this look huge bonus becoz they sure hit the nail on the right spot. stay like this and watch people leave gmail.....didn't expect this from Google!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? xiel9 12/13/11 2:30 PM
the outlook of this new gmail is extremely  horrible.  color is  too bright, margin is too big, and even feels laggy. I couldnt even find some buttoms that I used to use with the old look. strongly suggest  google keeps the old version or fix the new versions!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? dliz 12/14/11 9:41 AM
I'm in tears now because my dad who learnt to use the computer after so many months asked me how to switch back to gmail's old look. he said the old look was more friendly.
Single panes are more intuitive to any new user than cluttering the entire page with a ridiculous number of panes. Having a long row of buttons pop up on hovering over harmless looking things, such as your name, is equally disturbing.
Where have the words gone...? The icons don't make sense as much as words do. We are humans. We love reading.
Please stop calling the 'old' look the 'old' look. It breeds fear in me that you will stop supporting it in the future. Please keep that as an option.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 12/14/11 5:46 PM
@ dliz  Your post, like many others, seems to hold out hope that the 'old look' is going to be an option.  From all the comments from the spin support department to the way they word the 'switch back to the old look temporarily', all your hopes are in vain.  Old look will not be supported.  This forum is worse than a joke because even though everyone seems to want to keep the old look, and there are basically zero positive comments about the new look, the new look is going to happen.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Guar V 12/14/11 6:08 PM
@Sarah:

What are they doing about the fact that the new Google "Menu" is inefficient? No one has commented upon this yet. I really don't see how taking easy, visible access to Google's applications and burying them in a drop-down menu makes them more accessible. Same goes for burying Contacts/Mail/Tasks in a menu, and for hiding all our mail labels with no ability to customize so they stay unhidden!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? JBryllars 12/14/11 6:32 PM
Google Gmail people don't seem to get it. WE DON'T WANT A NEW LOOK.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? JBryllars 12/14/11 6:32 PM
If it isn't broke, don't fix it. No New Look.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? hot.rice.sparists 12/14/11 7:16 PM
@Guar V   Sarah is nothing but an impotent mouthpiece trying to perform the futile task of making everyone think that the New Look is better.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? fussycow 12/16/11 9:00 AM
I REALLY HATE this layout!....and I am probably going to change e-mail addresses if it doesnt revert.
 BYE BYE GOOGLE....!!!!!
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? LikeItSimple 12/20/11 6:56 PM
I do not like the new look either. I hope I can switch back, and not just temporarily.
What I do not like even more is that Google made the change without asking me and without me authorizing it. Why is this happening? It is very frustrating to say the least!

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? bogdan82 12/21/11 2:29 AM
You should leave the option to switch to the old look for all the people that want that.

Don't put us on the temporary mindset please.

Respect your costumers and their choices..
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? lucids 12/21/11 4:23 AM
Please just stop FORCING us to try use a new style that we don't want. By all means try improvements and give these as options but ALWAYS leave the option available to leave it as it is.

Don't you realise that people don't like the look and functionality and prefer the old way. On the old way everything is there and can be seen. I don't appreciate wasting my time looking for option settings only to discover they only appear when a mail is selected.

Or what about old people who are used to things. Its taken me years to get elderly relatives up and running using gmail, Do you think that they can just go ping and get it all again. Sigh...wake up and realise that the folly of this is the stupid way that we are being forced into this when we don't want it.

I like google purely because it isn't like the dictators at apple. Please just let us have an option to switch between olf and new and then everyone can be happy, then get on with putting apple out of business so they have to use android on their  crappy iphones.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? rilian 3/21/12 3:52 PM
Your supervisor must be forcing you to ignore all the feedback on this forum.

The new look is far more difficult to read. I am perfectly happy with the old one.  I am sick and tired of having google switch me to the new look without asking and having to manually turn it off every time. I am also sick and tired of having to close the little blue box asking me to try the new look ever 15 minutes.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? jsm562 3/22/12 4:56 AM
Please leave the appearance of my gmail alone. If you permanently delete my old look I will stop using all Google products and I will sell my Android phone.

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? dragonspammer 4/6/12 4:52 PM
I can't find it. Also, as to why I don't like the new look, I have three words. "Why Change It?" I now can't find my way around. I bet in a few weeks I will become adjusted, but that's still a nuance.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? SixYT 4/8/12 2:38 PM
Compact isn't as compact as original.
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 4/9/12 4:08 PM
Hey dragonspammer, I understand it takes some time to adjust and we appreciate your bearing with us as you get used to the changes. For now, you can still go back to the old look, but we'll be retiring the old look soon so now is a great time to get up-to-speed with the new look. I'm attaching a video on how to customize the appearance of Gmail that might help.

Best,
Sarah
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? cantusenewgmail 4/18/12 8:59 AM
Is the option to switch back now gone?  I switched and really can't use this.  It is really just very difficult to read - i imagine this works well for younger people but this creates a very difficult to discern jumble of text.  I can find no second cog that gives me the option to switch back.  I am using priority inbox which I thought was great until now.

Thanks,
Lindsay

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Cris_Cris 4/18/12 9:58 AM
Sarah.. i did compared all that displayed density with the older look and absolutelly NONE of that is like the older look... its or too little , or too big... i dont understand why google insist with all these changes that is 100% OBVIOUS that people DONT LIKE!!! I left yahoo because i liked how google was, now if you continue with all these changes i'll end with leting google away and try to find another platform that fit my requirements, and i am sure that will be a very big amount of persons that will do the same.

...Too bad.. google was great... not anymore!

Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Cris_Cris 4/18/12 10:04 AM
I dont think they care too much of what people want or think.. google have other interests...
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Cris_Cris 4/18/12 10:10 AM
This is a big BS!!!  How can i turn back to the old look if i dont have that function anymore!???
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? PAPA Parents 4/18/12 11:24 AM
My problem is when I access gmail on my office computer, which does not have an updated browser (big company = slow change) I am directed to the HTML version and there is no cog wheel.  I don't care about the look.  I care about functionality.  With he HTML version by cc and bcc buttons are not functional and I can't do what I need to do.  How do I change back if there is no cog wheel?????
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Brent.marino 4/18/12 1:58 PM
Well, now I can not switch back to the "old" look of gmail.  Just so the "powers that be" at google are aware, I switched to gmail from hotmail because it was clean.  No toolbars, no advertisements bouncing around the screen, etc... Now when I open my gmail account I have not less than three toolbars that take up 20% of the screen.  Sure google might not think of the "+Brent Search Images blah blah" and the "Google search box" nor "Gmail^ " as toolbars, but they are! This stinks! I guess when the Ads that are surely to come visit the 20% of my screen that gmail now hogs I will have to find an email client like outlook.  And no I do not want or need a reply.  I just want the "old" gmail back...
Re: How do I change GMail back to the old look? Sarah 4/18/12 3:17 PM
Hi everyone, I'm closing this thread because it is outdated, but feel free to join a more recent discussion.

You can access the older version of Gmail here:

Please note that we do not maintain all older versions of Gmail. For more options, see this guide.

Best,
