|How did my email get muted? What is muted?||mute what||9/2/09 8:15 PM|
I found some of my email noted as 'muted'. What is muted? What cause these particular emails to get muted? Can the email be 'un-muted'? I looked in 'more action', 'labels', and the reply drop down of the muted emails; I found nothing that either mutes or un-mutes an email.

Muting is gmail's version of ignoring. You can mute a conversation by selecting it, then hitting shift+m and un-mute by selecting the conversation and Moving to Inbox.
It's possible you accidentally had a few conversations selected and hit the shift + m keys. You can disable keyboard shortcuts under settings.

Thank You Valjean. I'll check the keyboard shortcuts for other 'Gotchas'.

I have emails appearing as muted that are already in the In Box, which seems to eliminate the option suggested for un-mute.. A shift+m makes them disappear from the In Box..

What i have found that works is to archive the email, then go to the archive and drag the email back to the inbox, at that time the email is "un-muted"

I find this feature very confusing and unhelpful. The lack of an intuitive remedy for accidental muting and the inability to turn off this unwanted keyboard shortcut seems odd. What I did do was change the keyboard shortcut to ˆ (shift+option+i) so that I don't mute conversations by accident.

- click on "Help" top right on the Gmail page
- type "mute" in the search box
- press Enter
It can't get any more intuitive than that...

I don't see any value in muting. The same can be achieved with a filter that automatically archives the message.

Here is my way to UN-muted
- Click "All Mail" to dispaly all
- Button "Move" now becomes "Move to Inbox"
- Check your Muted mail(s) and click "Move to Inbox" button

I just discovered a 'muted' email as well. I am sure I must have done that accidently, slip of the finger while keyboarding. It was not an important email so I just deleted it; however, I find it strange to have an option which can so easily be put into effect, accidently.

If an email is already in your Inbox, but appears with the "Muted" label do the following: Select and Archive the email, then go to your Archive and move the email back to the Inbox. This removed the "Muted" label for me.

brandonpan's answer is the one that worked for me. Keyboard short-cuts were not the problem. Mine were already turned off when this idiotic "mute" thing kicked in..

When did this "muting" feature appear? I tried several solutions, none worked, until "magically" one of them did. In the end, I'm not sure what worked. I suspect I muted the conversation by some inadvertant act when I was reading it on my Droid. Didn't mean to... blundered into it with a regular contact. Bad implementation I suspect. Not user friendly to bring a half-baked feature into active use. Accidents happen - do better Google.

I agree - this should be able to be turned off. None of the things people mentioned worked for me.
I put it as spam. Then I unmarked it in the spam folder and the 'muted' stupid thing went away.

I just discovered an important email that got muted. This seems like a stupid feature that should be disposed of.
How would I find other email that might have been muted?

Had the same problem - a conversation appeared muted (unintentionally) but remained in my inbox. Thanks to Phillid3 and kento for the "Archive-Unarchive" suggestion. (Apparentely "Move to inbox" is not available for emails in the inbox!)

I just found out a whole series of bills due in the past 3 months was muted accidentally. Google needs to remove this dangerous feature. I use other keyboard shortcuts a lot and don't want to lose all of them. I like the solution of changing this horrible shortcut to something really complicated. Shift-M is a very common combination! Shame on Google for creating this trap. Hope my credit rating isn't affected!

Archive-Undo did not work for me.

I just found a message thread that was also muted without any action on my part. I have unmuted it but also realized that my computer security was compromised -- my clock was deleted and virus protection has been removed from the Control Panel. The Virus protection is still in the program file. It is weird but considering the person that was the other party in the message thread, it does not surprise me,

I have had many emails (like my whole inbox) muted with no action on my part. A couple months ago I was on an unsecured network and each of the emails I received during the time I was on that network disappeared (I'm guessing were also muted). I figured there was a security breech through that unsecured network. Now it has happened again, and I was not on an unsecured network. Should I worry? Should I close my account?

This morning I also had a message muted for no apparent reason and the timing suspiciously coincides with new computer "problems" that I've encountered since yesterday out of nowhere.
My computer has begun to randomly shuts itself off no matter which family profile is being used. I at first thought it had to be malfunctioning circuitry until I had this mysterious "muting" of a message that I would not have chosen to mute. It was only after searching the "help" menu that I learned that there is a muting feature and judging from the content of the last post before mine - dated 12/29/10 - I am not convinced that my computer issues are not the result of a hack into my account and I am now concerned about a security breach in gmail. I would appreciate if Gmail would address this issue.
In terms of the muting feature in general, the feature would seem to be helpful if there was an obvious way to access a list of items "muted" through the filtering process so that a person could see which addresses / messages had been filtered.
