How do I remove the period from my email? jekinsman 7/28/09 9:38 AM
When I set up my account, I used a period (.) and would like to remove it. I know it's the same address if I do that, so it seems like I should just be able to format it this way. Thanks for the help!

jekinsman,

You can not removed the period  but you can give your address out without the perioid and it will still come to your email.  but you will have to sign in with the period.

In your username, the period is mandatory - if you set it up like that. [If you created the account with a username of Joe.Bloggs then that's what you must use to login with.]
You cannot *change* the username or the e-mail address associated with that account.

When you receive an e-mail from me and read who it's from, my last name isn't written with a "big letter". It says "lau" and I want it to be "Lau".
How do I change this?

basstela,

It can`t be changed.
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? JohnW2 7/28/09 10:54 AM
all e-mail addresses are actually handled as lower-case anyway.
If you mean how it is displayed, then you can edit that in Settings > Accounts  > 'Send mail as: '  and make the correction there.

I must say, this period thing has gotten me pretty annoyed, but with good reason. When I signed up for a GMAIL account there was no mention anywhere that the period was useless, otherwise I never would've used it in the first place.

The problem is that my GMAIL address is a domain (DOMAINN...@gmail.com), and I would like to use the same address for personal use as I do for business use, however I don't want business contacts to be able to see the domain. Yes, I realize that I can give the email address out without the period in it, but that doesn't help for certain things, such as sending someone an invite for Google Wave. It's also going to be pretty confusing to people when I sell the domain name, which is happening shortly.

My biggest beef with the period issue is that my address technically doesn't even HAVE the period in it, so technically I already have the address I want, except for the pesky, useless period. And I'm so hard-wired into this GMAIL account now that I can't just setup a new account as a lot of people have suggested.

So what it boils down to is that my email address does NOT actually have a period in it, just my display name does, and there's no way to remove the period from the display name. How has Google not setup to allow you to make a change like this? All I really want to do is have my display name be the same as my actual email address, which doesn't seem like a difficult request if you ask me.

It's amazing how frustrating a single period can be. I love Google and everything they do (I bought my GMAIL invite on eBay when they were in the extreme beta stage), but this one issue is pretty big for me, and I'm kind of saddened that Google doesn't have a solution for it.

Greg C.,

If you have a domain name you should check out the Google Apps Standard edition.

http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html

to have a  address like  for exsample  joe @ mydomain.com

I'm already very familiar with GA, but that doesn't help my issue here. I do NOT want the domain to be shown (which is the username part of my email address), so using GA doesn't solve that.

It's not true that you have to use the user name with periods to sign in to Google. I am able to do it with or without periods.

Makes me wonder if the answers above are fully researched.

So, I repeat the question: can the periods be removed or changed in a google user ID and email address after it has been created.

adamhardyjohnson,

Please see this link below about the dots

I'm glad this thread is still alive. I hope it stays that way until Google has some sort of a solution for this.
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? mousouchop 3/23/10 3:33 PM
I sincerely hope that they enable this soon. I hate myself for registering my account as mousou.chop instead of mousouchop.

Gmail was the first time that I saw the ability to have a non alphanumeric character in a user name-- so stupidly, I went ahead and used the "." just for the sake of doing so. I now sign in to all google accounts using "mousouchop" but the bar at the top still haunts me with "mousou.chop"  GRRRRR!!!

Even more so annoyed with it now that I have a Google Voice account and am using google services more than ever! :(
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? Greg C. 3/23/10 3:53 PM
I feel your pain mousouchop, I'm in the exact same situation. For the first time ever I decided to include the period in order to help cut down on spam, yet the spam keeps coming because it works without the period, and it was a complete waste. A warning about this during signup would've been nice.

And it's really quite amazing how many 'little' annoying issues there are because of that single period. My actual GMAIL address is useless to me because of the period, I just use my GMAIL account to pull in all my other accounts, which are the accounts I send from as well.
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? bmcdermott 4/19/10 5:02 PM
To reiterate, when I signed up with gmail (~04 or 05) and typed in my name, it automatically put a period between my first+ last. I would love to get rid of this. My reply-to address is set to the version without the period but I hate signing in with the period. Would love it if Google could just edit accounts like this.
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? mousouchop 4/19/10 6:41 PM
@bmcdermott You can also sign in without the period as well... you will just see the period at the top right menu-- which I still find annoying!

mousouchop>

This is a recent change then, I have been periodically trying this for the last 4-5 years. Now if they could only get rid of the period.

I am also glad this thread is still alive. I would like to add my name to the list of folks that are very annoyed by this issue. If John...@gmail.com or Joh...@gmail.com both end up getting mail to the same place, why can't we get rid of the period?!?!?!? There couldn't possibly be an account-holder conflict. I don't even mind having to do a bunch of admin work with other websites if necessary.

Kill The Period!!!!

Re: How do I remove the period from my email? LMcKin51-Top Contributor 9/12/10 12:46 PM
KipHouston,

You are the owner of the non dot address and the dots address.

so if someone email you at  joe...@gmail.com  or joe...@gmail.com  you will get the email.

same with joe...@googlemail.com  and joe...@googlemail.com

j.o.e....@gmail.com  you will get this email to if someone put dots between each letter.
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? scott.x.harris 9/30/10 10:33 AM
I'm annoyed that google doesn't allow you to choose which you would like to appear in the 'from' when people receive mail... I have scott.x.harris which I prefer to show up as scottxharris. Really annoying and lame.
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? JohnW2 10/5/10 3:22 PM
@scottxharris - simply make sure that the address as shown in "Send mail as" section of Gmail's Settings uses your preferred choice, and it should henceforth show as From: scottxharris@
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? stephnieng 2/3/11 9:28 PM
Agreed, I can do as suggested and change the "send mail as" section, but the period at the top right menu is still annoying.
Re: How do I remove the period from my email? JohnW2 2/11/11 11:11 AM
@stephnieng - If your address on the Gmail display page is showing the period in your address, then that's the address you chose when you signed up, and the "real" address of your mailbox. The fact that Google/Gmail doesn't take notice of periods in the name section is of no consequence. You can't change it in any way.
