I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. Jack LoPinto 5/25/10 9:09 PM
Explain your issue in full detail here:

I have followed the instructions implicitly to basically send a text alert to my mobile phone when I have new emails arrive in my inbox. Automatically the "conformation" text was sent to and received at my phone. This is the kicker no where in the text was a verification number for me to type back into the verification field to verify that I want to receive these alerts. How can I confirm without a supplied confirmation number?

The code is cut off because the email is too long for the text character limit. There have been a bunch of complaints about this and I flagged it for the engineers last week, but I get the sense that because SMS is not supported, it is not going to be given any priority.

I had seen a suggestion from someone else to try using the MMS domain instead, which allows for a longer message, and I offered that up as a possible workaround to several people. I do not know how useful that is; one person came back and said that while it did give him the code, it was not a working link and he wasn't able to use it.

I am now urging everyone who posts about this to go to the suggestion page and make a suggestion. That page is found at http://mail.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=suggestions

I'm also keeping track of the complaints and plan to raise it with the Google folks again when I have a sizable number.

Sorry I cannot offer anything more positive.

Ms153,

This is ridiculous from the view point of virtually a none techi here...do I understand correctly that there isn't enough room  in the text line to send me,.... what....a four digit confirmation code? I'm having flash backs to the movie Office Space here where all this computer code had to be re written for the "2000 change over" because all the software programmers were trying to save space by inputing ' 99 versus 1999 when we changed over to  2000, the new millennium! Let me give you a little info here I have bought a cellular phone and plan through Wallmart on one of their biggest plans here their $45.00 Unlimited Voice, Text, and Web, and all I want to do is receive a text alert when I get a new email in my gmail account on this phone. Do I understand that I am this - far away from  accomplishing this only four digits stand in my way? I'm playing devils advocate here...so I hope you understand where I'm coming from when I say I don't know from SMS...I don't even understand what the acronym stands for...all I know is we supposedly have landed men on the moon but we can't accomplish this task? Well apparently we can't cap a well that's bleeding tons of gallons of oil in our own gulf either! It's no wonder we are leading the way to be coming a third world country soon as well. Thank you for your links and your reply, you can bet I'm going to voice my opinions at "make a suggestions page". I'm not militant here but this is just beyond absurd!

I'm also having trouble with this issue. Google recently implemented the verification feature for forwarding e-mail. I should have signed up for an e-mail account before that happened. Looks like I'll have to switch to a different e-mail provider.
By the way, that suggestion link doesn't work for me.
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. garygliu1 5/28/10 9:49 PM
I did some more research...
Go to their suggestions page:
Suggest something along these lines:
"Please consider moving the verification code to the beginning of the message, or at least within the first 150 characters, to support those who want to foward to SMS.  I have Sprint, and it's not practical to use the MMS address for this purpose."
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. MsI53 5/29/10 12:39 PM
Jack LoPinto: Yes, unfortunately that little four-digit code is what stands in the way of your accomplishing what you want.

Let me try to clarify things for you. SMS is shorthand for text message (it actually stands for Short Message Service. MMS is Multimedia Service; i.e., photos and video). Cell phone carriers (the companies that provide the phone service) have a set character limit for text messages, usually either 140 or 160 characters depending on the carrier.

Gmail now demands a verification to accept a forwarding address. It sends the verification in the form of an email containing a four-digit code. But the email is not written with SMS in mind and the content exceeds 160 characters, so that four-digit code either winds up truncated or does not appear at all, depending on the cell carrier.

If gmail would just send the code by itself or put it at the beginning, this would be no problem. But it doesn't. SMS is not a supported gmail function, meaning nothing in gmail is designed to work with that feature.

I am hoping that enough people will use the suggestion page that it makes the engineers take notice and fix the situation. I'm in complete agreement that it's ridiculous not to be able to do this.

I am having the same issue.
I am trying to forward my emails to my Virgin Mobile phone because my Gmail is not popping up as a notification on the phone.  So it seemed like converting them to SMS text messages and having them forwarded on was a good temporary solution.  Alas I have the same problem as I can't get the code to give back to Gmail.  HOW STUPID!.

I would appreciate it if you would fix this somehow.  I've had a Gmail account that forwards for years and this new security protocol is stopping me from doing what I need to.  At least I'd know I have an email and could go ready it in another program on the phone

FIX?  Why not get the code to the beginning of the email rather than the end. Thanks engineers.

Ms153,

Thanks for your replies input and suggestions. I went to the suggestions section and ticked the requester to support SMS and added the new suggestion to move the code to the beginning of the verification message. Thanks also to all the responses from the community, it would be nice to hear from somebody on the Gmail team! maybe as the requests grow we may get noticed.

I am having trouble with this same problem. I hope Google will fix it. In the meantime I found a long way around to fix this. I created a new email account at gawab.com. Then I set my gmail to forward to this address. Then I set my gawab account to forward to my cellphone. At gawab you have to create a filter but I wanted all my messages to I just set the from in the filter to "@". This whole procedure is complicated but it works for me.
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. MsI53 6/7/10 11:57 AM
Hey thanks for this, dannylpenner. It's certainly a good workaround for now and I'm sure others will be interested in knowing about it.

It was a small hassle, but definitely worth it. Thanks for the tip dannylpenner.
Looks like gawab.com will be receiving a bunch of new users.

Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. Jack LoPinto 6/7/10 8:58 PM
Hey Forum,

I have also a Hot mail account that used to work with my Verizon phone. I guess the issue is whether or not the email provider supports SMS. So could I just forward my emails from my Gmail account to Hot mail (another prominent internet email provider) not such a subtle hint Gmail, and then set the forwarding filters in Hot Mail?
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. MsI53 6/8/10 7:33 AM
My understanding is that hotmail does not support forwarding. But I could be confusing it with yahoo. Easiest way to find out is to try to set it up and see if it's possible.

Yep - same problem here. Thanks for the work around. I hope google team fixes this.
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. Branden B 6/22/10 12:41 PM
If you have a Verizon phone and unlimited text and picture messaging, then use [yournumber]@vzwpix.com instead of @vtext.com. This will send you a picture message instead of a text message. This way the confirmation code will show up. Also, using your vzwpix number will allow you to read an entire email instead of only the first 160 characters...
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. MsI53 6/22/10 2:17 PM
Good to know it works for Verizon. Previous suggestions to use the equivalent were fruitless for people with other carriers; they received messages with codes that weren't clickable links and so they still couldn't use them.

Thanks for the update!

Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. Branden B 6/22/10 3:28 PM
Ms153 - Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly but I did not receive a clickable link either. Here's what I did:

Under Settings I clicked on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP menu. Then I selected the radio button for "Forward a copy of incoming mail to." I entered my MMS phone email address: xxxxx...@vzwpix.com.

A new box appeared below that read "
Verify xxxxx...@vwpix.com" with a confirmation code text field and verify button. Once I received the confirmation email (this time, the entire email through MMS), I entered the nine digit (I think it was nine...it definitely wasn't the four mentioned above) confirmation code and clicked verify.

Then I created a new filter and had a copy of the mail forwarded to my phone. Works great.

Here's a list of other carriers MMS email addresses that might work:

Alltel = xxxxx...@message.alltel.com
AT&T = xxxxx...@mms.att.net
Boost Mobile = xxxxx...@myboostmobile.com
Cingular (AT&T) = xxxxx...@mms.mycingular.com
Nextel = xxxxx...@messaging.nextel.com
Sprint = xxxxx...@messaging.sprintpcs.com or xxxxx...@pm.sprint.com
T-Mobile = xxxxx...@tmomail.net
US Cellular = xxxxx...@mms.uscc.net
Verizon Wireless = xxxxx...@vzwpix.com
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. MsI53 6/22/10 4:12 PM
I think some people had said that although they received the code by using the MMS domain, they still couldn't get it to work. I honestly don't recall; I'd have to search them out. What they've all done is use a third party service as an intermediary.

What I'm really hoping is that enough people will complain about this that it spurs the Google folks to fix the email.

I am trying to find way to fwd my emails from gmail to verizon mobile ....but still no luck I tried @vtext.com but definately that doesnt work also @vzwpix.com which even dont work....I am trying to fwd it to hotmail account and then to sms ...no luck yet...

is there any other way to get sms alert? please let me know....
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. MsI53 6/28/10 10:48 AM
So far the only answer seems to be a third party service. A number of people have created accounts at gawab.com and most say it's working fine. I did see one complaint about inconsistency, but it was the only one.
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. robertey 6/28/10 11:24 AM
Use the MMS address suffix instead of the SMS address suffix. Mine is @vmpix.com for Virgin Mobile.
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. MsI53 6/28/10 1:05 PM
Good to know it works for Virgin Mobile too. But that's only two carriers. Still, thanks for letting us know. Adds to the knowledge base!
Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. AnyTechFL 6/30/10 6:33 PM
Sprint's network with an Evo 4G: use xxxxx...@pm.sprint.com for the forwarding address.

Get message with the code in it. Type it into the verification box.

Problem solved on Sprint.

Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. nwat25 7/13/10 7:43 PM
I'm having the exact same problem, very frustrated with google over this, move the stupid code to the beginning of the sms! I'm trying to get it to forward to an iridium phone it used to work before google added the verification. I'm limited to 160 chars with no mms address... Guess I'll try bouncing it off another email account what a pain!

Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. dumas 8/18/10 2:30 PM
ok, I found a SOLUTION ...sign up an acct at hotmail.com for FREE. There's a FREE FORWARD option where you can redirect yall mail to yall mobile.

example:

gmail ==> hotmail ==> mobile.

Re: I am trying to set up "forwarding" new incoming emails to my mobile phone. dumas 8/18/10 2:41 PM
fyi,

here's the downside to using hotmail forward service...

if you send email from ibm.com, hotmail will discard the original address and only use your current hotmail address and hence when you get the message on the mobile phone, you will be able to read the message, but the original email addy will be discard.

hope this help. enjoy!

Gamil is sending an email - not a text message to confirm the number for forwarding emails as sms to a cell... WHY NOT???

ANSWER FOR VERIZON USERS::::OK I'm a simple person looking for a SIMPLE answer.  I read through all these replies and they are confusing if you are not a technical person.  SIMPLE answer to the problem is instead of forwarding your email to 10digi...@vtext.com input 10digi...@vzwpix.com

I did this and voila! all the previous messages with the cut off confirmation codes appeared instantly in my text inbox.  So I'm assuming this is what people meant when they stated to changing the SMS and MMS formats.  I don't know, I'm just a simple person looking for simple answers.  Screw created another email account to to fwd my emails.  I have a hard enough time remembering this email account info!  Hope this helps someone out there.....
