Explain your issue in full detail here:

When I open an email, right next to "hide details" there is this mm/dd/yy format that gets me very confused.

Why has no-one come up with an answer for this problem?
We are not living in America. In Australia the Date format is DD/MM/YYYY
Is there NO monitoring of this forum by GMAIL's Technical Support?

To change the date format to dd/mm/yy - go into the general tab under settings... Under the first header (Language) click the drop down box and select English (UK).

Actually, you don't need to even change your language settings. In gmail under Settings > General, there's a option for Date Format. It has yyyy-mm-dd, dd-mm-yyyy and mm-dd-yyy or you can even choose your language default, which if you were to set to English (UK) would make it dd-mm-yyy automatically. Two different ways to do it :)

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that my answer above is actually a Gmail Labs feature. In order to change it from your settings page without changing your default language, you'd have to enable the Labs feature called "Custom date formats"

I like using Gmail in English even though my mother tongue is Finnish and I live in Finland. Is there any way to change the date format (to dd.mm.yyyy) without changing the language of the whole interface?

Change the date format without changing the language:

1. Enable Google Labs.
2. In Labs, enable "Custom date formats"

3. In Gmail, go to Settings > General
4. Scroll down until you see Date Format.
5. Change to your desired format. Available formats: yy/mm/dd, dd/mm/yy, mm/dd/yy

Can't we just have a mask to set the date format?

I want ddd d/M/yyyy

Even this forum only has M/d/yy, I have my language set to English(UK)

Yes. I was wondering the same and had to change from English US to UK, now the GMail dates are showed dd/mm/yy. But how to change it on the Google forums like this one? As the previous poster indicates the dates here are shown mm/dd/yy. This is really irritating because finding the settings for locales in Google is so tricky. For some of Google services it feels as if Google thinks that they were only being used by US people! Common Google!

See the post below. Unfortunately, there's no way to change settings across all Google services.

even if you add the google labs feature to enable custom date formats, recent messages aren't affected by the format change.

maybe it would be faster to get my country to change their standard date format...

Today is 16 February 2011 in Australia.  I attempted to change to DD/MM/YYYY by going to the "Labs" and enabling the "Custom Date Formats" and then going to "General" in Settings and selecting DD/MM/YYYY as the format; however this DID NOT change the date format from the US (MM/DD/YYYY).  I had to select English (UK) for the change to be effective. The only thing that needs to be done is to change to English (UK) - the Custom Date Formats can be neglected.  The downside is that I cannot use English (US) which I prefer to use.  Obviously, Google need to do some work to so that the "Labs" of creating a customised date  will work in any language.

I went to googlelabs.com and/or labs.google.com and was dumbfounded...  but there is actually a LABS tab _IN_ gmail options...

Oh... I want to choose an "x" option... no you don't find it under "x" where you expect you find it in the "coming soon" tab!? dumbfounded exactly.

Anyways... the whole thing should just be ISO yyyy-MM-dd and forget all the other backward inconsistent formats.

In the option it should have the current date so... for instance on November 11, 2011 it would list:

* Language default
* 2011-11-11
* 11/11/2011
* 11/11/2011

That should make it easy for people using ISO or US or UK formatting to immediately choose the proper format...
