how do I export emails from gmail to csv files?
That seems like a basic easy task to me. And yet I cannot find out how to do this any where. I see a zillion hits for exporting or importing CONTACTs. But nothing about how do I export my messages to a csv file.
Can someone tell me how to do that please?

Well, csv is not exactly a format designed for email messages.
The only way to do this is to connect to gmail over IMAP using a desktop email client capable of exporting to csv and then export from the other client.

Let's see. csv is not a reasonable candidate for export; except through an IMAP client?

No. I don't think csv is a good format for email period. But if there is an email program that can support it, then you can connect it to google via IMAP or POP and do it that way.

What format do you recommend, then? What does Google support? People might have a legitimate need to export their email messages, right?

Gmail doesn't have any mass export tool. As I said, you should use an IMAP or POP client to do this. I recommend one that support standard mbox format, since it is simple and widely supported. But it really isn't important as long as you have a client that can read and write the format you want.

Lets limit the scope of the export then. I wish to keep all the people who I have communicated with in the past. I wish to save all of the emails that are in my sent box and in my inbox. Perhaps I will have them to my google contacts. Or maybe just to a csv file. We can forget all abou the body of the messages. We can even forget all about the Subject too, if thats a must.
So, this seemly easy task - saving all those email addresses of the people who have written to me - how is that done?

Gmail doesn't have a feature to do that.
Gmail automatically places anyone that you send mail to in your contacts list, and you can export that as a CSV. But there is no way to export the addresses of everyone who has sent you mail.
As I've said, if you can find any desktop mail client that can do this, then you can connect to gmail via IMAP and do it that way. I remember that the old client "pine" had this feature, but I haven't checked if outlook or thunderbird can do it.

To be more accurate I think that its GMail CAN auto place someone into your contacts. But if you never put that feature on auto, well then, thats an awful lot of mouse clicks to mow through. after two years I have several hundred indidual customers in that inbox as well as another thousand miscellaneous emails too.
I've recently loaded Ubuntu 9.10 on an old Pen 4 - perhaps there's an updated pine engined client out there that will work.
IMAP Google Contacts..........sounds like a lot of search engine result blanching is in my future.

Okay, forget csv! How can I archive old emails on an external memory tied to my computer?

I've had that same problem a few months ago and this is how i managed to save a couple of messages i needed. First, download thunderbird and setup your gmail account. Next, select the messages you wish to save and then go to file|save as and select a folder where you wish to store your stuff. Congrats. you have just saved your messages.

I have to save 648 messages that all have the same label. Is there a way to do that?

Using client software like Outlook or Thunderbird works for one email account. Yes, you can have more than one email account using Outlook but that has given me problems in the past. I think what is needed is software specifically designed to back up email accounts. Any ideas?
