Buy a Google Apps account. :)  Gmail hasn't been upgraded yet for Apps users.

I don't know what lines you're referring to. There's a vertical divider between the label list and the message list. If you mean the link lines underneath each label on the left, they're gone. Personally, I think it's a huge improvement. It makes the display much cleaner and easier to read. And since the old version is going away next month, you should really try to get used to it.

New gmail format is terrible.  Compose is now in center of column, more difficult to find yet I use it the most.  Prefer inbox, etc being under compose at top of column, not bottom.  Contacts and tasks now at top although you can close the box.  How many people use those more than compose.  Pull down menu for selection ALL, NONE, etc adds an additional stop which is very irritating.  In order to Select All and delete, it now takes 3 steps instead of 2.

I, for one, use Contacts as much, if not more, than Mail. As for selecting all messages, it's still one click: just click the check box in the drop down without actually dropping the menu down. It's really very easy.

I am totally frustrated with the new gmail format. I don't like the contacts bar at the beginning and I can't link to any short cuts in my gmail account. Arrrrggggg......why must companies change things for the sake of change and forget simplicity sometimes has its merits.

I can't stand the change.  The change to how I select messages is no end to annoyance for me.  I now have to click in one VERY FREAKING SMALL checkbox to select all messages so I can mark read.  If I misclick AT ALL I get the drop down instead, which adds one extra click to the steps.

The old selection was a billion times better.  The savings of 20 pixels or so was not worth this hassle.  Its not like i'm reading gmail on my watch or something.

Believe me, I hate this change as much as you and MOST other google users do!  Google must not be telling us about something they gained other than the 12 pixels.  Why else would they not listen to their users?  That said, there is a work around for you on the 'mark as read' button.  On the upper right corner of your screen is a button called 'settings'.  Hit that then choose 'labs'.  Way down the page is an option to pul the 'mark as read' button out of the drop down.  It is a lab though, so one day google might disable the function much like they disabled the entire 'user friendly' mail we used to have.
