|Contacts not showing up online||michaelylin||8/3/09 11:38 PM|
I was attempting to sync my Thunderbird address book with my GMail book, which resulted in my GMail account being deleted... fortunately I had my GMail book saved before that happened, but when I reimported it, none of my previous contacts showed up in the chat box on the left. Furthermore, I normally connect through the chat client Miranda via the Jabber protocol--when I opened up Miranda, none of those contacts showed online, even though I confirmed via AIM that they were online on Google Chat. I can still see them on my buddy list, but they all appear offline.
To add another twist, I was able to get those contacts to appear online by inviting them to chat, but after about 20-30 contacts, that method stopped working.
Can you help? Thanks!

When you delete a contact and re-add it, you have to re-invite to chat. Wait awhile. The continue to invite the contacts to chat.

Thanks a lot! That's helpful to be reassured. Do you know how long I have to wait? I've been trying to re-invite people in GMail--I'll type in their email address, select "Invite to chat" and I'll get a "The invitation has been sent successfully" message at the top of GMail, but they don't show up on chat as online, they don't even show up in my chat list, and when I type in their name again it says "Invite to chat" instead of "Send offline chat". Also, when I force GMail to show them in the chat list, it doesn't display a little status circle next to their name, nor does it say "Invited" in gray next to their name. This leads me to think that something is wrong with the Inviting strategy--do you think I just need to wait? It's been over 24 hours since this last worked. Thanks!

Users have up to 3 days to accept the invite before the link expires.

firdous, Click on view and uncheck show one page.
If no joy, go to Older Version link at bottom of page, and then try to open contacts. If it works, a Google Lab, browser addon, or system antivirus program is interfering with newer version of Gmail.
Or you can go directly to Contacts Manager via http://www.google.com/contacts

war17, I tried doing what you said and I still have nothing. I exported all of my contacts from various sources, imported and trimmed the list in GMail. Not one of the 192 are showing up, and about a fourth of that are contacts from my University, who I can see in Chat when accessing my university's email account in GMail.
|Re: Contacts not showing up online||wár17 §||7/19/10 7:42 AM|
In Gmail, go to your Contacts list. Look for the imported contacts in All Contacts folder.
|Re: Contacts not showing up online||pjfontillas||7/19/10 7:49 AM|
I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you want me to do with those instructions? I went into contacts and see all of them there. 192 are in My Contacts, and 378 in All Contacts, but none show up in Chat on the left-hand side.
|Re: Contacts not showing up online||wár17 §||7/19/10 8:15 AM|
So the contacts are there, just not in My Contacts. Go to each contact and select to Show in My Contacts folder. You will still need to invite the contact to chat and contact has to accept.

I have 192 contacts under My Contacts. Those with email addresses have "Show in chat list: Auto". I still need to invite them to chat and they have to accept before I can see them again? Even if they were on my list in my other GMail accounts before I imported them all into this one account?

You can select Always show in My Contacts list. Then they will show in chat list.

Quite right! That works, thanks!

I can't even now select any options for if I want them to show in my chat list or not. This seems to have happened only since the new version of Gmail has come out.... How do I now access this info?
|Re: Contacts not showing up online||wár17 §||8/19/10 7:24 AM|
The Gmail contact manager has changed.
Click on Contacts manager.
Select the person that you want to change.
Click on Groups > My Contacts.
|Re: Contacts not showing up online||Calvinaus||8/19/10 7:31 AM|
I still can't change their status, as a person I had as never show, I want to be able to change back to auto. You used to be able to toggle between easily, but can't see to anymore.
|Re: Contacts not showing up online||wár17 §||8/19/10 7:36 AM|
Next to Chat, click on the down arrow. Select show all contacts.

Sorry still didn't work, or allow me to toggle individual people I want to show, or not show.

Can someone help me?? I used to chat with one contact all the time but now I can't send any messages because we appear as being offline to each other - we didn't block each other, we have selected to always appear on each others chat list (and we do appear on the list but always offline), and there is not an "invite to chat" request option. If I send an offline chat he doesn't receive it. I have no problems chatting with other contacts. Any idea how to solve this?

Nancy, Verify that your friend did not accidentally block you. Check if you have listed your friend in another contact.
If no second contact, delete and then recreate the contact. Invite friend to chat.

my contacts is not showing ...please tell me what is the problem ......
|Re: Contacts not showing up online||wár17 §||1/18/11 7:33 AM|
naveenmurahari and madan, clarify your question. Where are you looking for your contacts? In Gmail? Do you see chat but not the contacts? What browser are you using? If you change browser, does it make a difference?

I am guessing that the "invite" feature must have been added later on? I started using GMAIL in 2006, and everyone showed up with a status if they were logged on. I accidentally deleted some contacts and restored my contact list. old contacts now never show up if they were deleted, and restored. I guess I'd have to invited them again if I wanted to chat. I am not into that, I just liked to know when friends were logged in. it's enough to know if this is the cause. I am not about to go invite folks just to see them.
just let me know if thisexplanation is correct. it might help other perplexed folks, too.
