To turn it off just click Disable Buzz link at the bottom of your Gmail (it's near the Basic HTML link).

To make it easier to find the "turn on" or "turn off" option look for the line below:
Gmail view: standard | turn on chat | turn on buzz | older version | basic HTML  Learn more

Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! andytgeezer 2/11/10 3:43 AM
I would really like to know how to remove my Buzz profile too. I didn't sign up to gmail to have all my information shared. Google have taken a step down the wrong path here in my opinion. I closed my facebook account because I didn't WANT to share my information and assumed gmail was a safe haven. What a slap in the face
Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! adam.weston 2/11/10 4:49 AM
The Google employees, LemonAid and Michelle are not giving you complete information. Clicking "Turn off Buzz" is not sufficient.

1)  Remove the Buzz content from your profile, or the people you follow (who could be anyone from your ex to a stranger) will be listed publicly, as well as those following you (most of whom probably did not choose to). I do not know the exact steps to remove that information from your profile, so I suggest removing your profile entirely. You will lose all the information on it if you do this. Your call.

2) Block all your followers and un-follow all the people you're following. There are quite a few steps involved and I'm tired, but it's not hard to figure out.

3) After 1 and 2, go ahead and Turn off Buzz. All this does is removes the Buzz links from your GMail page.
Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! 7NK 2/11/10 5:44 AM
*adam.weston*

even your way it's not enough =/

I've blocked all of my follower, delete all the people I follow and disable buzz.

Then I disconnect from gmail from my first account and connect with my other... I still can found the first buzz profile and follow it (and from the first profile, disabled, I don't receive any notification of that!)

... but the worst thing it's that from account#2 I can see all of the people who follow the account#1 *EVEN IF THEY'RE BLOCKED!!!*
I don't want my gf see that my ex follows me so as my boss at work. I don't wont that two people in my gmail address book sees that I know both of them!

Just want to COMPLETELY DISABLE this application.

Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! Doc.B 2/11/10 8:28 AM
@Lemonaid: Your solution doesn't address the possibility that 'turnitoffpease' is still sharing information from other sites that Buzz automatically connected to when he initially turned it on.  After I clicked to 'Turn Buzz off', I was still sharing my Google Reader items with my Buzz followers (which was a group 3 times larger than my hand-picked reader followers) until my girlfriend notified me.

Apparently the only way to *really* disable buzz is to go to your google profile page, click edit, and then click 'delete' at the bottom of the page. The 'Turn it off' feature simply hides it from yourself, it doesn't remove you from participating.

Woah great Sandra! How did you do it? I've disabled everythign and still have a public profile. What a disaster this rollout has been! Can't people just NOT follow me? I don't WANT gmail to be social. It scares the bejuses out of me that my email contacts will know each other!
Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! s98766 2/11/10 8:29 AM
After disabling everything I could possibly disable, I now get to a screen, when I click on my name, saying that I don't have a public profile ! Yes!

However, I can't get rid of the people that are following me. They still show up on the list of followers
Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! s98766 2/11/10 8:33 AM
I have first followed the instructions on lifehacker. Then, I also deleted from the profile my name, just leaving a nickname (I just put a letter), I also deleted the picture (that Google "stole" from my chat to publish in my profile...) . I have also blocked all the people in the followers and following list. I don't know, but it just worked...
Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! wahou 2/12/10 11:30 AM
Just delete your google profile. It will remove all your public buzz posts and the people you follow won't anymore appear publicly.
Go to http://www.google.com/profiles/me/editprofile
Click on the "delete profile" link at the bottom of the page.

how do i disable this completely? I am being stalked by an ex. I am, shaking like a leaf because I've just discovered that google chose to make all my personal contacts public without notifying me or asking my permisssion to do so. I am totally confused about all these different places I'm supposed to go to to edit profiles & stop followers etc. I want to OPT OUT, period.
Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! babysinister 2/12/10 6:24 PM
dear google,

please tell your employees to stop telling people in here the "turn buzz off" button will actually turn buzz of, because it doesnt.

or change the button name to "hide buzz from view' as thats what the button actually does.

you know what better yet,

just make the "turn buzz off" button actually turn buzz off. make it revert my profile to what it was before i started buzz.

also give us an option to not be able to be followed at all, by anyone, ever.

given the nature of your company you should realise why we (your customers) get kinda upset when you start displaying and gathering information about us when we dont want it. and its even more unsettling when "turn off"  buttons dont actually turn anything off.

please google, understand that some people are actually not interested in social networking, and absolutely not interested in forced mixes of social networking and email.

as a highschool teacher i need to know for sure my information is not shared with anyone without my consent. sadly it seems i have to stop using the worlds best webmail client, because they decided to go all facebook.

good job google, dont be evil right?
Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! hkap 2/12/10 6:25 PM
Alright.. this is how i did it.

1. Delete your Buzz Profile:
http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=98083

2. Disable Buzz from Gmail:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=171460

These 2 steps should remove the "Pain in the ass".
Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! melissande 2/12/10 6:50 PM
These are great answers... except for the fact that I had no official profile to begin with.  When I went to the page it had little more than my first and last name, and a large button at the bottom saying "create profile" or some similar language that indicated I had never done so.  And yet, Buzzing I was... with anger!!

You see, Google apparently decided on their own that I wanted an autocomplete email entry called "group", which included all my Buzz contacts (which Google also chose for me), which came up every time I started typing my best friend's email address.  She was part of the "group", but I had no groups listed at all under my Contacts, and two of the people Google arbitrarily picked to be in said "group" weren't even under my 20 most frequently emailed people in Contacts.  Took me an hour and a half of searching plus deleting my entire Contacts section before I could get rid of the "group" email list.

Of course, I don't see this as a long-term fix because as I email people they keep being shoved back into my Contacts, so it's eventually a possibility that I'm going to be stuck with this "email 'group'" option popping up again once everyone from the original "group" jumps back in.  A secret layer of junk that isn't findable nor responsive to any normal channels to remove it, doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.  If the problem comes back I'm going to be looking for a new provider, no doubt about it.  Dearest Google Team, would you like it if you thought you had sent a rant complaining about how much Buzz stinks to a coworker named "Evan", only to find out that you had inadvertently sent it to "Everybody"?  Somehow I doubt it.

@ Michelle, Google employee: Your answer is false and misleading, the button you refer to does not prevent people from having access to your contacts and reading lists. One has to delete one's profile on Google and delete all contacts Google forced onto us.

I've always been very satisfied with gmail and the continuous addition of more functionality, but I have serious issues with google adding features without my approval -- especially when it could affect my privacy.

It looks like buzz will turn out to be a major blunder on googles part...

Hello Google, are you listening? It's time to implement some damage control.

Sincerely,

One of your (for the time being) loyal user.

Once again Google decides to play big brother.  Did I ask you for the Buzz crap?  NO!!!! Here we are fighting virus after virus trying to protect our information and you decide to create another and choose our contacts for us.  Are you people crazy??  After reading your privacy contract, which releases you of any liabilities, I followed the instructions to disable Buzz but I believe that is not enough.  I did not use it but I am now afraid to use my E-mail, and I have received emails warning against it's use.  What you don't understand is that people choose to use Facebook, and Twitter.  Your attempt to ease in on that market is Un-American.  I knew nothing about Buzz but suddenly I have a contact list and who knows what information I may have shared with one contact was shared with all YOU chose for me.  It's time that people dump Google because they are going too far.

Google's New Buzz is a privacy nightmare...

Basically any one you connect with via Buzz gets a full list and access to everyone you ever email or connect with using any of Google services, Facebook or Twitter if you have a public Google profile!!!

Did you know any picture you upload creates and automatic Picasa account in your name and also a web album????  Your real name is made available even in your account uses an alias or a business identity

Did you know that if you use buzz on your mobile device any other users nearby will be able to see your location... (oh great!!! perfect for women users having issues with stalkers!!!!  Everyone in the area can be informed in real time exactly where you are... and get a google map and directions included!!!)

Google Buzz also makes available all your Facebook interactions and friends and all your tweets and followers on Twitter!  All of this is set up as soon as you click on the Buzz icon... without giving you the option of configuring initially...

You can be putting yourself and your family and your job at risk...  Don't just open a Buzz account without knowing that it opens access to and makes visible everything you email, post or Tweet along with that of everyone you connect with online!

Seriously.....  Don't use Buzz until Google gets a clue about online safety and privacy!

Please Read this article before you use it...

and this one:

and also read the fine print of Google's admitted Buzz privacy policy or rather "lack of privacy" policy.

 Google Privacy Policy.

In addition, if you upload a photo via the Buzz interface or choose to email images to

If this helps: I edited my profile down to nothing, and blocked and unfollowed all the ready made "friends" Gmail set up for me. I've turned buzz off, and I turned my chat window off--I really don't need any more 419 scammers trying to chat me up.

Sign me up with the rest. Tweaks won't fix this, Google! You are DESTROYING YEARS OF TRUST AND GOOD WILL. This is doing massive damage to your core brands. Yank this "service" and NOW. Who asked for this? I never wanted a Google-run social networking service. I SURE didn't want one that I was signed up for without my permission.

Imagine you woke up one morning and discovered somebody had created a Facebook account for you, and posted to it a list of the people they thought were your friends. Wouldn't you be ticked off? That's exactly what you've done.

REMOVE BUZZ NOW!

It's incredible that Google employees are giving out incorrect instructions to people wanting to turn off Buzz.

Either the employees are incompetent or Google are intentionally misleading people. I wonder which one of those is the case here.

Stop saying crap and frightening people...
Uncheck the option "Show the lists of people I'm following and people following me on my profile" and click on the link "turn off buzz".
That's it, buzz is disabled and your privacy is safe.

By all means have Google Buzz as a chat line for those who need it, as a completely seperate programme, but do not interfere with my e.mail account.
I do not want to just "Turn off Buzz", I want to completely eliminate it from anything to do with me. I also do not want to be searching forums for a means to achieve this.
Google, you put this into my system now you take it out.
Googlemail has been my e.mail client of choice for a good few years. If Buzz remains anywhere near my system, I will be using a different e.mail client in the very near future.
You ruined a very good startup / Home page with iGoogle tabs. You are about to do the saame with Googlemail.

Get it sorted now or you will see a lot of people desert you.

You offer businesses the chance to use your service. Do you really think that any business will want to use Googlemail with this drivel now attached?

If I wanted a second facebook account I would have signed up for another facebook account. Did you ever think that maybe there are still people on this earth who don't want to be connected to friends and information constantly? I am furious that this was done automatically, furious to the point that after years of satisfactory service, I'm considering completely removing my profile from all of your services. I am not so deluded as to think there is true privacy on the internet but why do you go making a social network out of our email! Why do you make it easier for stalkers to find an email address when there are companies making a living hacking email addresses? Delete it from your email service keep it as a separate service if you like but get it out of the email!

Look, I use several different Gmail accounts, and in some of them I STORE SENSITIVE MATERIAL, and I contact PRIVATE LEGAL ADVISORS, and so on-- and ALL of these accounts are now compromised.

I have had to go through all of them to make sure that BUZZ is out of the picture completely.

I have deleted my profile, and found that in new accounts of mine that I access I am listed as having no profile-- good-- but I NO LONGER TRUST GOOGLE to tell me the truth about this, or if you do, I DO NOT TRUST you to make sure things stay that way!

When money/profits is GOD there is no place for ethics and morality! All one has to do is look around in the corporate and political world for limitless evidence of this.
VERY SAD!

They added chat without anyones permission... you use their software they have the right to add new features... if you people can't read the tutorials on how to change things online then that's your fault.  If you don't like people knowing where you are set it to private and set which contacts you want to share with... I had mine set up perfectly fine within a few minutes.... Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter are all Public by default. If you have issues post ideas to fix them instead of complaining and be a constructive member of society.

Re: How do I delete Google Buzz. I didn't ask for it to be downloaded to my system! Tom59 3/3/10 12:45 PM
The only form of contact with Google is via this forum. I defy you to find an e.mail address or phone number for Google customer services.

"Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter are all Public by default." Myspace, Twitter and FaceBook are all acknowledged public discussion media.

" ... you use their software they have the right to add new features.." Google mail is a private service supplied by Google and should be respected by Google as such.

"... if you people can't read the tutorials on how to change things online then that's your fault." The only way to find answers to problems such as this one, is by reading these forums.

".. I had mine set up perfectly fine within a few minutes...If you have issues post ideas to fix them instead of complaining and be a constructive member of society."  If only computer programming geniuses who know the correct answers are permitted to post, then we will be waiting a long time for the solution.

Please do not use your superior intellect to belittle people who have a genuine need to find answers to a problem which should never have existed.

I don't know, because I can't reach my gmail account. If the automatic redirection to the buzz (all small case intentionally, like "nemecsek ernő") intro page does not disappear in a few weeks, I will delete all my google accounts and move to another mail provider. That will solve the problem for sure.

I think the easiest way is to turn off gmail and stop using any google services.  I've started to transition back to Yahoo Mail.  This is the only way Google will learn, when they start losing users by the hundreds and thousands and then millions.

Agreed.  I don't want anyone to be able to add me at all. I never asked for a Buzz account.  Please remove my name from everyone else's Buzz friend list when I turn off Buzz.  I do not want to appear.  I do not want a Buzz account.  I made a Google Profile long before you roped it into this, and I need it to continue to exist without making me a member of Buzz that other people can plaster on their public pages without my authorization or approval.

What you do is go to "settings" then click on the "buzz" tab then you scroll down to "disable buzz" click on it and your buzz will be no more!

Gentlemen,

I am Dr. Clay D. Reding, my wife of 39 years is Judith Reding. We are older people. Our names abound on Google search pages. I still work for a U.S. government agency that is concerned about our protection.
My IP address DOES change often for some protection__Last week we found my personnel full name, address and my AMEX CARD Number listed. An  tech at Apple Care was arrested within hours. BUT it is MOST imperative our names and all data just DISAPPEAR from Google searches. Since I am semi-retired__the agency no longer protects out data by using a secure line. If you use your search engine you will find Clay V. Reding USMC__during WWII___my Father now deceased. It should be erased. We implore you to erase, delete, make our names and addresses
simply vanish. We are in grave danger. We do no wrong, nothing illegal. I am fully armed and licensed to carry a weapon, but after decades of serving the U.S. I we are at risk. Please  be so helpful by removing our names and full data from the ENTIRE Google Pages. We are indeed stockholders in Google and have been for years.
We believe in his company. But we are possibly in "harm's way"___Please remove ASAP!

Best Regards,

Dr. Clay D. and Judith Reding (and Clay V. Reding, now dead)

PLEASE DO NOT POST THIS REQUEST !!!
