I think that one of my friends might be blocking me on chat. Can I find out somehow?

The only way to know if someone is blocking you on chat is to ask them via another means.

one way to tell if a person is blocking you, is when they are showing off line, to Disable Chat History per that person, and send a message ie. 'you there?'
If the message goes through, that means the person is online. if the message gets rejected, that means they are offline.
this works because if chat history is enabled, the message will 'go through' either to the person, or to 'hard disk.'
if its not savable, the message bounces back.

I usually aska mutual friend if the person is online. If my friend says the other person IS online and I don't see them as online, it only makes sense that they'd be blocking me. Requires knowing a mutual friend, though...

You need to use another chat program to know. Get the Pidgin chat client, and using it login with your gmail account to the gtalk chat. A list of your contacts will come up. Look for the person who you think is blocking you. Right click, select "get info." If the person's name does not come up, then you have been blocked by them. My blog explains it in greater detail.
