I have that problem too.
There are special app 'ContactSync ( by happydroid )' that aimed to workaround this problem, but it does not work on my HTC Hero ( 2.43.411.17 )
I am using Google Apps for custom domain.

I am also having this problem. My contacts from my phone were transferred to my droid. Any new contact I make syncs with google. I set up mt calendar to google. But I cannot get the other contacts on the droid to sync with google--I cannnot find the apps mentioned above

I am also having this problem. When I bought my android, the techs at verizon set up a google account. They used CelleBrite to transfer my contact to the droid from my old phone. I have created a new google account which my phone now recognizes as primary. Will my droid automatically sync the contacts with the new google account?

Unfortunately contacts added by transferring from the old phone at the Verizon store won't auto sync. The only way I know to make it work is to have gmail import the contacts from your desktop.
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||johnp58||11/20/09 6:16 AM|
Here's what I finally figured out. It appears that contacts that are not imported via gmail wont sync in gmail. I'm on t-mobile and used their network based contacts management to clean-up (delete) all the contacts. then i imported all the contacts into gmail and of course that sync works just fine. fortunately my master contacts file is managed in outlook. if your importing from an old phone and dont have a .csv file you can upload to gmail, you will have a problem. if your contacts are on your phone (and not on your pc), try syncing with your carrier's contact mgmt first then export the contacts to a .csv file from there and you should be good to go.

I use gmail, it's calender and I thought it's contacts. My contact list on gamail is correct, but the contact list in my Andriod phone is different. It looks like whatever got imported originally. What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't my contacts in my phone be the same as on the gmail website?
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||DonutDude||12/11/09 2:19 AM|
I had the same problem. In 1.6 using the contacts-> edit sync groups-> Sync all contacts simply does not work.
This was not a problem in cupcake because cupcake had Auto-Sync (which does work) on by default.
To fix your problem go to settings->Data Synchronization and enable Auto-Sync. After a minute or two your online Google contacts will be up to data again.
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||GunnyGee||12/11/09 5:22 AM|
I have read all the replies to the question about how to sync my android phone to my gmail account and have not found a solution.
Here is my situation.
1. I created a Gmail account using my Motorola Droid.
2. My contacts were transferred to my Motorola Droid by Verison corporate store from my old phone (method unknown)
3. I exported my phone contacts from Outlook 2003 to Gmail account using Explorer 8.0 (no problems here)
4. I can view these contacts on my Motorola Droid. (no problem here)
5. I have auto sync enabled on my Droid and when I add or update a contact online the change makes it to my droid.
My problem is: If I add or update a contact on my Droid, it does not show up in my Gmail contacts online. Since I'm using Outlook as my master copy, my hope is to export\import from Gmail to Outlook 2003 to ensure my phone contact updates are aligned wth my Outlook and Gmail.
Any help on this problem would be appreciated.

I have a droid from Sprint and have the same problem. What i'm seeing is that phone numbers that are classified as "Phone" as opposed to "Google" do not sync. When entering a new contact in you phone set it as Contact Type "Google" as opposed to "Phone".

I also believe you need to have Gmail has your default email. Someone can correct me on this.
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||elcs2||3/12/10 8:57 AM|
I'm having the same problem.... except...
I started from scratch on my HTC Hero from sprint. I added all my contacts myself, i created all the groups myself too.
when i go to gmail online, i can see that it synced my GROUP NAMES, but did not put any of my contacts in those groups. i can't seem to force a sync, either. it says it's syncing, the sync day/time is updated, but still no contacts showing up online.
am i going to have to sync to my PC, export my contacts to .CVS format, AND THEN upload to google?? seems like i'd be defeating the purpose of having a "google-fied" phone.
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||Leibel||3/25/10 2:37 PM|
When I go to Settings>Accounts & sync, I have a little sync icon in red. On the bottom it says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly". When I click on my account in the Manage Accounts box, all three choices are checked but the contacts one is the one with the error.
This has been sitting like this since 3/23/10 around noon. HELP!

|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||BMichel||4/1/10 10:05 AM|
I add another 'me too'. Unlike for the calendar, this is not a complete sync. Entries I make on my Droid Eris remain only on that device noted as 'phone'. Entries I modify on my iMac (10.6.2) sync with gmail contacts OK. I want my iMac address book to be the master copy.
I can't determine any way to force these entries to gmail so that they then update the iMac. I can't use iSync via Bluetooth to put them on the iMac.
Looks like two choices: manually reenter on iMac or export vCards from the phone to the iMac and import them into gmail contacts.

I am having the same problem, also. It would be great if this problem was unique. The Facebook sync doesn't work well. All the profile links of my contact go to my profile. Hence, the Facebook sync is useless.

|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||aveluwen||5/10/10 11:27 AM|
There seems to be a general solution to the sync problems in Android with Gmail, Agenda or Contacts.
For Gmail sync problems read the following thread:
or go to the general solution described on:
I solved the Contacts sync problem by applying the same steps, but now clearing the 'Contact Storage' database instead. Precise steps followed:
1. Press your device's < Home > button, then press < Menu >.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Data synchronisation
4. Disable Contact synchronisation
5. Return to Settings by pressing the < Back > button on your device
6. Select Applications, then Manage applications.
7. Select Contact Storage.
Note: It may have different names, depending on your language, e.g. "Opslag contacten" in Dutch
8. Select Clear data. Answer OK when prompted.
9. Return to the list of applications by pressing the < Back > button on your device.
10. Select Contacts and then select Clear data. Answer OK when prompted.
Next, restart your device (switch it off an on) and resume datasynchronisation for your contacts
1. Press your device's < Home > button, then press < Menu >.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select datasynchronisation
4. Enable Contact synchronisation
After this the device will re-sync with the server.
Cause of problem? In my case it started after I deleted the 'Starred in Android' group, both on the Gmail server and my mobile phone. The group came back after I fixed the synchronisation problem.

|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||revcp||6/17/10 10:39 AM|
Google and HTC are making me nuts. On June 16 HTC finally rolled out a Sync Manager that can speak to my Sprint Hero. "Great," I thought, "I'm set." It was effortless to sync my laptop with my phone, but it doubled all my contacts (I unchecked calendar sync, as google calender sync with microsoft and the android sync with google calendar has made that a happy triangle). So I purged contacts from the phone, resynced all my contacts with Outlook and Voila! In order not to have the same duplication issues with Google contacts I deleted all my online contacts and then clicked the "sync now" button on the Hero under menu/settings/accounts and sync/google. Nothing went from the phone to google online. Nothing. How can it be that difficult?
I would just shrug and leave it alone, but I really appreciated the groups that I could create through google contacts and have on my phone. Anyone have any ideas?

Using Sprint EVO 4G and Android . Using Google Apps Pro (push server). Windows XP, Outlook 2003 and 2010
It is clear that Android won't let you change the "contact type" once entered. If I remember to save an entry as a "google" contact type, it will synch with my google mail account (which is not @gmail).
However, once entered as a "phone" contact type, always a phone contact type. I've tried some of the available contact changers, don't work with my phone.
One "pain in the a**) work around: export any phone contacts as a VCard (to yourself), from your phone. Then import into Gmail or Outlook.
Since I use Outoook (and Outlook syncs with gmail contacts via Google Apps): I use Outlook. I suspect one can also import vCards into Gmail contacts directly.
To export: open phone contact you want to export, then hit "menu/send contact" You will get a "send contact as vCard" screen that allows you to chose contact info to send.
One option is to send by Mail: Hopefully you have an alternate pop/imap or Access acount. For some reason, I can't send the vcard using an email account.
Another option is to send as MMS. This worked for me (but I sent to my email address). If you send to yourself via MMS, you must download the "image" as a text file. It looks like this:
Save in any text tile with and save with the .vcf extension.
Then just "click on the file from windows explorer to open it. It opens as an Outlook contact.

SOLUTION AS FOLLOWS.............
Now this may not suit some of you, it's a bit of a pain in the behind but it WORKED for me.
My issue was that i couldnt sync my sim contacts to my gmail account. Everytime i tried it seemed ok and then one by one deleted each contact until 0 were left. Luckily i had them on sim anyway. So i kept trying until i clicked, when i was selecting import sim contacts, i would choose firstname.lastname@example.org, but i remembered a while back my google account was renamed gmail so it was clear the phone and the correct google account werent communicating properly, although email was synced fine. I decided to remove my googlemail account from the Desire and add my gmail account but of course thats not possible unless you do a factory reset. I backed up everything on SD, then performed a factory reset, added the correct gmail account and voila! All done, all i have to do now is re-install all my apps but my content is still backed up, nothing lost! All contacts full of the details i had and fully synced with gmail, now syncing to FB as i type this... Hope that helps those in the same situation as me.
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||Eric_DL||7/25/10 8:20 PM|
Sorry to contradict all you people that posted here, but for anyone having some privacy concerns about storing all his(her) contacts with complete info all in the hands of a unique company, it's great news that "Contact" or "People" apps can contain contacts that are not in synced at google.
I hope Android dev will keep it that way, because it offers consumers the choice of having all their contacts synced, or only some of them.
I've seen lots of complex operation of import/export of CSV or VCF files throughout the posts, so I thought I would give a simpler solution, at least for HTC Desire.
For the record, mine runs on :
- firmware 2.1-update1
- software 126.96.36.199
Think of phone contacts and google contacts as two databases that your "Contact" or "People" apps access seamlessly. But, although it presents you with all contacts on the same interface doesn"t mean you can pass contacts over the "frontier" from one DB to the other. As with any DB, exchange of data involves an export/import process.
To answer johnp58's initial request, here's how to extract the phone DB and import it in the google DB on an HTC Desire with the "People" app (all these contacts will then be synced on your google account).
NB: all actions are done from the first app tab called "All"
## Exporting phone DB
- press "Menu" and tap "View"
- you must activate the view of the contacts DB you want to export (here it's Phone) so check only "Phone" and tap "Done"
- you're back in the "All" tab and all the names that you see now are from your phone contacts DB
- press "Menu" again and tap "Import/Export"
- choose "Export to SD card" on the popup that rise
- then choose "Phone" on the new popup
- the next popup then shows you the place and name of the VCF file that will be written, tap "OK"
- once the export is finished, you're back to the "All" tab
## Importing to google DB
- press "Menu" again and tap "Import/Export"
- now choose "Import from SD card" on the popup
- choose "Google" on the new popup
- android then find your previously created VCF file and imports it or guides you to chosing a particular VCF file if you already had some on your SD card (choose import a single vCard file)
## Sticking to google contacts
- press "Menu" and tap "View"
- now to activate only google contacts view (check "Google" and uncheck "Phone")
- also uncheck "Show auto Gmail contacts" or you will keep seeing all people Gmail can find in the addressees of every single email you have in your account (namely the content of the "All Contacts" group in the Google contacts web interface), then tap "Done"
From now on, all you see in the "All" tab are google contacts, that are synced with your google account.
However, next time you create a contact entry from the phone, BE CAREFUL to select "Google" for entry's type or you'd have to do all that export/import thing again just for a few accounts created in the phone DB by mistake (plus it would bring up duplicate entries of your first import, which is really tedious and unpleasant to fix). When the next created account is set as a google one, "People" app normally keeps presenting you with this type of account by default for all future creation.
You can just switch the words "Phone" and "Google" in what's described above if you wish to move contacts from google DB to phone DB.
Hope this can help.

I try the tecnique just explained by Eric_DL on my Galaxy S that I followed by the letter......it did not copy only my phone db entries even I selected and view only those but every single entries, now for every google email I had I have two little gg letter meaning that I have two identical connected contact while for the phone entry now it shows only one g letter.
I sync and on line it shows the new phone entries correctly.
Developers should work on a easier way to manage contacts and easier way to sync them.

Many causes possible... but when already tried to flush contacts / contacts data, or factory reset, check this ! Worked for me like a charm but required a few days googling... I initially used Eric_DL solution but it was not satisfactory as it did not allow for automatic sync.
Android Contacts sync breaks when some contacts do have a birthday without year :
In my case, contact sync did work until I happened to quickly enter a birthday on my android phone (HTC Desire).
Use this little marvelous piece of software to find which of your contacts do have a birthday entered and check whether they have a year defined. Then edit gmail contacts fields with the very same tool.

Thank you Eric_DL. I got as far as "- then choose "Phone" on the new popup" when I got a "forced close" window as Contacts stopped working. I'm wondering if maybe this originates from the way the folks at Best Buy uploaded my old phone contacts. When I choose View from the Contacts menu, the Phone contacts says (0) records. But, heck, the records were somewhere when I first started using the Evo. I was dialing away as I left the store. But, I now have contacts in my Google contacts file that once only existed on my old phone. Very confusing.

OK. I looked into my Gmail settings and found that I didn't have Gmail set up as IMAP. See here:
Once I changed from POP to IMAP. It sync'ed. Of course, now I have some duplicates to clean up...again. I guess I need to look into how to set Write preference to Gmail contacts or the Evo...

You can sync the phone numbers in your mobile to GMail by linking each contact to their respective google id, and updating the number in their google profile through phone..
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||freeman100||11/22/10 3:56 PM|
There is a very simple way to do this (using an HTC Incredible)
1. Save your contacts to your sd card
2. Mount your device to your pc with the USB cable and select mount as a hard drive.
3. Log in to your google account and scroll down to contacts then click manage contacts.
A new screen will pop up with your contact information in it, in the upper right corner then will be a clickable
4. click import and a file selection window will pop up, click browse and select computer, and a list of drives will
pop up select the one that is your device (ie removable drive (G:) 1.78 gig of free space)
5 select the file pcsc_pcsc0001 (it should say vCard File in the file type column and the appropriate file size ie 39 mb)
6. once selected this will import all contacts to your google gmail account and allow you to use the new google voice
commands to text and email. you can further manage these contacts if you wish from google on your pc
hope this helps! ...it took me a while to figure this out, since google hasn't done a good job of posting a reply

|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||Samsung Intercept||12/14/10 9:15 PM|
I had the exact same problem. I have the Samsung Intercept (which is an Android phone).
How I remedied the problem:
1. I went to my contact list on my phone2. I tapped my menu soft key
3. When the menu came up over my contacts, I choose Import/Export -- this lead me to two options, "Import from SD" or "Export to SD"
4. I exported all of my contacts to my mini-SD card in my phone.
5. Using my SD card adapter, I inserted the SD card from my phone into my computer (Which runs on Windows).6. In my Gmail account (which I usually use Google Chrome as my browser, but I believe it's irrelevant), I went to Contacts > More Actions > Import...
7. From there, it tells you to browse your computer for what you want to Import. Click on Choose File > My Computer > SD (it should be the only SD card in your computer right now)
8. There should be something on your SD card that isn't in a subfolder (mine was simply labeled 00001), and when you hover over it, it should say Type: vCard File. This is what you want to import.
Voila! Your contacts are now ALL in your gmail account. And whenever you add a contact to your phone, if you want it to automatically sync it to your gmail account, tell it to save to Gmail, not to Phone. (Saving to Gmail saves it to both your email and your phone.)
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||gdjenkins||12/15/10 6:44 AM|
Sprint LG Optimus S ... I was having the same problem. My phone contacts were imported from a Blackberry. When I tried to txt using the Voice Commands, the "To:" field was always blank, but it was definitely hearing all the words correctly, as "To Contact Name Message ..." was being placed in the message body.
1. I solved this by making sure my GMail was being sync'd. All the blackberry phone contacts showed up in "Imported Contacts" in my GMail account.
2. In Gmail "Imported Accounts" click on any/all accounts I wanted to use with voice commands, and add that account to the the GMail "My Contacts" group.
3. Resync the phone.

Why not just export your contact list to your SD card, go to your SD card via My Files press the phones menu button, press share then select Googlemail, then tick the 00001.vcf file, then select OK, then email the vcf file to yourself, save it, then go to contacts in Googlmail, click import contacts, navigate to the vcf file, job done :-)

|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||Eric_DL||3/22/11 4:30 PM|
Hi all, wow, I hadn't come here for a long time .... I'm glad to see my little "guide" have helped a few people.
@paulhafer : the import/export format between contacts DB is actually a big vCard file (.VCF), so I guess you can just save a vCard file you've received as email attachment to the phone SD card, then import it to your Google contacts DB just the same way you did last time with the VCF export of your phone's contacts DB. The new contact should be merged with the rest.
BTW, there's one thing important to understand on the syncing mechanism of Google contacts between Gmail and your phone.
Your phone keeps a copy of your Google contacts DB, it's a synced copy of the one kept on Google servers (the one you see online in GMail contacts). But "synced" doesn't mean that the content of one DB is somehow copied to the other .... this would require you to define which of the two copies is the master and which is the slave. Actually "synced" means that any action done on one DB gets propagated to the other ... and this works in both directions (ie : you delete contact A from the phone and add contact B online on GMail => next sync operation propagates both deletion of contact A to GMail online contacts DB and addition of contact B on the phone copy of your Google contacts DB).
To put it simply : sync propagates your actions, not your contacts.
I think misunderstanding of this behavior is the most frequent root-cause behind people posting here claiming that they lost all their contacts.
So even if you see numerous double (or multiple) entries for contacts on the phone, DON'T DO massive Google contacts erase from your phone. Compare what you see online on GMail and try filtering display of contacts between the various contacts DB that the phone accesses (Google, Facebook, ...) to understand where the double entries come from and take the proper decision (this will lead you to a more thorough management of your contacts btw ;-).
AFAIK, the only way to cleanly erase Google contacts from your phone without affecting your online contacts DB is to erase Google account from the phone (provided that everything is synced, all you have done on the phone has been propagated to Google servers).
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||patrad1||3/28/11 7:32 PM|
Here was the simple answer for me folks. I have a Thunderbolt running Froyo. I was trying to make sense of having contacts in Gmail, Exchange, Facebook and the Phone.
Depending on your sync settings, you can sync contact with: Facebook, Google, Exchange. Android also keeps a local set called "Phone"
My issue is when I'd add a contact on the phone, it stayed there and gave me no option of anywhere else to put it.
Once I clicked on the "People" app, then Menu . . then View. I deselected Phone.
Android now gives me the option of where to create the contact: Google or Exchange ActiveSync
Choosing one of those then sync's it with the appropriate DB.
|Re: How do I sync android phone contacts to my online gmail acct?||patrad1||3/28/11 7:46 PM|
In Froyo it seems that it depends on how many places you are synching/viewing.
If I am only viewing my Google contacts, when I go to add a contact, it defaults to Google.
If I am viewing Google and Exchange, it defaults to store on Phone.
I wish you could change that behavior to always default to adding to a specific source.
