Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? the dood 8/8/09 12:41 PM

I'm creating an email contact list of parents for a class I teach. There's about 70 couples. I want to keep the contacts like "Joe and Jill Parent" and if the mom/dad have separate emails, put both emails under that contact. The problem is, when I go to email the group, Gmail only inserts the first email address listed for a contact with multiple email addresses. Is there a setting to make it include all addresses for those contacts, or do I HAVE to make those couples separate contacts? Keeping them together is so much easier and tidy.

yes, thx for response  HOWEVER

i know all this    what i want   is  to    have 1 name   that will email  both  address  simultaneously without breaking the 2 addresses  into  2 names  and making a group for both names

understand ?

guess you do understand,  so  it is NOT possible  and for those with 2 emails addresses  i must have same person listed twice, kinda lame
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? the dood 8/8/09 3:06 PM

Yes, this is inconvenient. This problem has been posted here several times before.

Hey Dood,

Did you ever get an answer to your problem?
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? dmpsulivan 9/9/09 10:52 AM
My problem is probably much simpler.  I have 10 e-mail addresses that I'd like to group into one contact name.  This I can do.  But when I enter the contact group into the address bar, only the first address in the group is selected.  Has anyone seen this before?  Is it a common problem?  Is there a solution?

Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? wjshankle 10/2/09 6:18 PM
I have the same problem. I maintain an email list for a organization I belong to. The list has 260 members, many of who have 2 email addresses on which they would like to receive the monthly newsletter.  the only way I have found to make this work, is to have separate contact entries for those members, each with a different email address. I then put everyone, including the duplicate contacts into one group..

Is there anywhere to get Gmail to include more than just the first email address for a contact when sending email. Seems pretty lame that Google lets you enter multiple email addresses, but does not support them when sending email...

See here: http://instanticity.com/blog/?p=5

Enter email addresses like this in your contact (type ">, <" inbetween each address):

fi...@address.com>, <sec...@address.com
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? the dood 10/21/09 10:27 AM
thx this works, but must choose either 2 or none, can pick and choose which of the emails to use, must send to both, i'd like the option of picking any of their emails, without having to add them twice as 2 contacts ........

cheers

I am having same problem. Frustrating... maybe a longer thread will draw more attention.

Still no fix for this?

I'm the team manager for my daughter's soccer team and this is a real pain to work around.

Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? wjshankle 5/12/10 1:23 PM
There is a workaround that I have being using successfully for awhile now.

Enter all the email addresses for a single contact in the following format in ONE
email entry for the contact..

na...@gmail.com>,<na...@gmail.com

The trick is separating the email addresses with >,<..
When you go to send mail to this contact or they are in a group list, gmail
will add a < to the front and an > to the end and separate the result with a ,
from the next one. By doing this, you fake out gmail..

It works..
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? DAndrew 8/3/10 10:10 AM
na...@gmail.com>,<name2@gmail.com

did not work for me
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? DAndrew 8/3/10 10:15 AM

Found this rather helpful hint on another Forum thread that helps those that want to specify a specific email address for a given contact with multiple email addresses in a Group. It’s a workaround and Google still need to extract the digit and get it fixed, but it’ll do in the mean time.

“Gmail used to have the functionality of choosing which of a contact’s multiple addresses are to be added to a group (rather than only the first one). I had lots of problems sending group emails to the field hockey team I was coaching as players checked their different email addresses at different times.

The best (and only) way to use this functionality of choosing from multiple email addresses for contacts when creating new groups is, firstly make sure your Contacts are up to date – merge any double-ups etc using the Merge Contacts function (which appears when you select more than one contact from your search results). Delete any obsolete email addresses for your contacts;

THEN click on the ‘older version’ link at the very bottom of the gmail page. This will take you to the older version of gmail which still has the (far better) group contacts functionality;

THEN go to Groups, choose the email group you were creating and as you type contact’s names into the large search box and the older style autocomplete will come up with their multiple email address, which you can then select and have added to the Group.

Once you have finished, save the Group and then go back the current version of gmail.

Problem solved but only as long as the older version of gmail accessed by the link, is still accessible. I suggest Google combined the functionality of the older version with the new version. After all, despite what SN says, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”.

Thank you DAndrew, that's EXACTLY what I was looking for!

Google, please return this function soon!!!

This was a great help.  However, according to Google, this won't work after September because they're taking the old version down.  I've posted a suggestion to them that they fix this.  Gmail is pretty good, but I wish all the Gmail coders would study MS Outlook.
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? lgrant 9/22/10 8:05 AM
It WOULD have been helpful - but still a pain to deal with as I have close to 60 students - most with multiple email addresses that do not always want to be merged.  A cheap ancient program I was using last year just had a icon to click "Send to Email 1"  "Send to Email 2" "Send to Email 1 & 2"  This doesn't seem like such an impossibility to fix.  Who at gmail is listening?
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? jtechau 9/28/10 9:41 AM
I've also suffered this problem, but just recently discovered a clean solution, that doesn't require munging the individual contacts' email addresses.

When composing an email, instead of typing in the group name into the address box, click the "To:", "Cc:" or "Bcc:" labels in front of that box.  This will open a pop-up which allows you to select addresses from your contacts.  At the top of the pop-up, you can select the group you want, then click on Select: All (all addresses should show up in the list below - including multiple addresses per contact), and Done.  You should now see all of the desired email addresses in the composition window.
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? Ed from Long Island 9/28/10 12:18 PM
This is a workaround, and not an especially good one.  This allows me to list all my contacts, and select the ones I want.  Not as good as just sending to a group.  And it doesn't even list my groups, just individuals.  What we are really asking for is a way to choose which email address for a particular individual is the one we want to include in the group.  When we make a group, gmail doesn't allow us to select an email address from multiple for an individual.  It just takes the first one.  So we want to create a group, select a contact to be part of the group, and then have gmail list all the email addresses for that contact and allow us to choose which one goes into the group.  It's that simple.
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? Ed from Long Island 9/28/10 12:19 PM
Are you listening Google?
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? jtechau 9/28/10 2:02 PM
Ed from Long Island, that's not exactly what the original post said.  Specifically, the original question was about sending mail to ALL email addresses in the contact group, rather than just the first address for each contact.  The solution I proposed cleanly solves that problem.

If I understand your request, you want to be able to pick a specific email address for each contact, and have that specific address be a part of the group.  I can see where that might be useful, but it's a separate issue.  (Although would have solved the original request as well.)  If you cannot find a help topic that matches your request, it might be useful to start a new one.

By the way, you may have misunderstood my solution.  It DOES allow you to select all of the contacts from a specific contact group only - see the top of the pop-up window.  In fact, once you select a group, it lists all of the emails for each contact - and from there, you can either select all emails in the group, or select whichever email you want for each individual contact in that group.  It's not as good as making the selection once when defining the group, but at least it's possible.

I THINK jtechau HAS THE ANSWER.

However, the addition of ONE STEP will help.

""""When composing an email, instead of typing in the group name into the address box, click the "To:", "Cc:" or "Bcc:" labels in front of that box.  This will open a pop-up which allows you to select addresses from your contacts.  At the top of the pop-up IN THE DROP DOWN MENU THAT STATES "MOST CONTACTED", you can select the group you want, then click on Select: All (all addresses should show up in the list below - including multiple addresses per contact), and Done.  You should now see all of the desired email addresses in the composition window."""
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? DonniP 10/12/10 6:58 PM
The drop down menu is still cumbersome if you are working with a large group where many individuals have multiple e-mail addresses.

Also, note that the topic of the thread is "Multiple email per contact in Gmail group"; so, of course, all of us looking for the type of solution to managing multiple groups where members have multiple addresses are finding *this* thread when we look for help!
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? Ed from Long Island 10/12/10 8:38 PM
I think if you read all the items in this thread, it's clear that people want flexibility in Groups.  They want to be able to choose all the email addresses for a contact to go into a group, or choose which one goes into a group.
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? moralesm84 11/10/10 8:01 AM
I just want to agree that I still have this problem and it would be nice to get it fixed. I have 200 contacts on my mailing list many with multiple e-mails and I would like to get this group thing working better.
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? tjdrive 2/3/11 1:16 PM
It would be simple if when adding a contact to a group one could select via a 2nd step check boxes of the emails to be used in the group. Obviously that would solve both issues!
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? HeroicLeisure 2/3/11 1:46 PM
The blog says this has been fixed today (http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/two-improvements-to-contact-groups.html), but the new functionality doesn't work. I can try and change the email used for a contact in a certain group from the one that's currently checked to a new one (ie check a box and uncheck the existing box). But after Apply, when I look again, BOTH boxes are checked. Sure enough, when I send a mail to the group, both emails are used for the contact. In short, it doesn't seem possible at present to turn OFF the existing default email for a contact in a group. (As seen in UK, using FFox 3.6.13 on XP professional)..
Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? Ed from Long Island 2/3/11 3:25 PM
Well, Google says they've fixed the problems.  I got an email today (2/3/2011) that says "Second, we’ve added the ability to specify which one of your contact’s email addresses you want to use in a given group. So, for example, you can now use your friend’s personal address in your “Poker Buddies” group and that same friend’s work address in your “Coworkers” group."

But I don't see anything like this.  My gmail contacts still work the same way.  It just puts the first address in the group. I do not get a choice.   Am I supposed to go somewhere and choose some option to make the new version of Gmail take effect?

Re: Multiple emails per contact in Gmail group? jtechau 2/3/11 3:46 PM
Ed, they didn't make it obvious, but it's there.  Open a contact.  At the top, under the contact's name, you should see a list of contact groups that the contact belongs to.  To the right of each group's name, there should be a small triangle.  If you click that triangle, it will give you a list of email addresses for the contact, and allow you to check the address(es) that you want to belong to that particular group.  Make sure you click "Apply" when you're done.

I'm not sure that it works quite correctly just yet, as has been pointed out.  But it's a step forward.
