What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? Dan_ 6/3/09 12:34 PM
I have 300 records in "my contacts", but 600 records in "all contacts".

What is the difference between these two groups?

Is there a way to see just those contacts that are in "all contacts" but NOT in "my contacts"?
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? SnerdlyBosco 6/3/09 3:03 PM
@Dan

All Contacts is pretty much everyone you've had any contact with.

My Contacts is what Google calls, "addresses you care about."

There is no way to show the outliers...

It would be good to see who is in "All Contacts" that is not in "My Contacts"...

With 677 in All Contacts, and 670 in My Contacts.. how can I tell the difference??
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? MAMBOLERO 7/17/09 10:45 AM
The distinction is so subtle as to be totally indistinct.  If Google insists on keeping the two categories, they need to make it easy for me to tell  who in the "All Contacts" group isn't in the "My Contacts" group.  Who the heck has the time or patience to track down 20+ MIA's, one by one by one....and even if you determinedly set out to "balance the books", the +/- is back an hour or a day later.

However, if it were up to me to design the headings, one or the other category would have been killed off a long time ago.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? MAMBOLERO 7/17/09 11:21 AM
And furthermore..... :-)

I'd also appreciate it if I didn't have to scan down the page to "All Contacts" -- move it to the top, either precediing or following the bogus "My Contacts"?

And have I mentioned in the last five minutes what a crazymaker the whole "My Contacts" vs. "All Contacts" thing is?!?!?  With the "Most Contacted", the "My vs. All", and the immutable, immovable "Tasks" and "Labels" in the left column of our Gmail Inbox, there's more Kvetch than Fetch at Gmail lately.

I'd love to get an answert to that question too ("Is there a way to see just those contacts that are in "all contacts" but NOT in "my contacts"?")

The print option in 'Contacts Manager' displays in another tab or window to resize etc might work for you.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? treecarr 7/25/09 10:12 AM
The difference is that all contacts includes both my contacts and the contacts google suggests for you. At one point they had it divided simply as My Contacts and Suggested Contacts, which makes much more sense, separates the two groups, and makes it easier to manage. I wish they would change it back. I also wish they would let me delete the friends, family, and coworkers groups, which I never use, but I have no idea how to let google know this is a problem.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? allencrawford 8/10/09 5:59 AM
I agree big time with MAMBOLERO.  I like to keep my "All Contacts" clean and often times do want to move one or more of them to my "My Contacts" section for syncing to my iPhone.  But, sometimes this is very difficult, and I only have 170 contacts.  The people with 600+ have to really hate it.  I really just wish the automatically-added contacts would be in a section named something like "Auto-Added Contacts" and that it would ONLY list those contacts.  Go ahead and keep the "All Contacts" field, I understand why it's there (mainly for merging contacts I think), but make it easy for the rest of us to keep things clean.

I also would like to have just one list. Importing Google to Contacts to my iPhone it so confusing and I have one big mess.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? RayM. 8/12/09 7:30 PM
All contacts might make sense if you could easily identify the outliers, as it is, I can't see what purpose it serves and it is confusing.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? uberrob 8/14/09 9:19 AM
Wow. No wonder everyone is confused. MOBOLERO is right in saying that this is a distinction that makes no difference.

The only thing I can think of is that "All Contacts" is used somehow by the Great Google Marketing Engine in the sky. What's bizarre, however, is that I use gSyncIt to sync between Google Contacts and Outlook, and 252 duplicate names are showing up in my outlook contacts database - however, the duplicates appear to be names of people I know with email addresses that they rarely use as the only body of the contact information. So, it seems as tho if a friend emails me to my google account using a new email address, Google Contacts gets confused and sticks it as a separate contact name "somewhere else," which gets reflected back in "All Contacts" . Coincidentally, the number 252 is the difference between my "My Contacts" and "All Contacts," so the gSyncIt app is picking up the extra contacts in "All Contacts."

The other data point here is that "My Contacts" appears to be the list that is sync'ed to android phones.

Google: the "All Contact" thing? Whatever really great idea some product marketing guy had a long time back got lost in the shuffle. Just nuke this category please. It's confusing the crap out of everyone.

Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? EnquiringMinds 9/3/09 4:00 PM
It's an annoyance when you try to sync the contacts list with your iPhone because only the "My Contacts" is immediately accessible in the list.

There's people in "My Contacts" list whom I haven't talked to in 20 years and people in the "All Contacts" whom I speak with frequently.  So the CSV import algorithm is making bizarre decisions.

I don't think the user needs this aggravation for a feature that provides no benefit.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? JJJT 9/16/09 9:16 AM
There is a fairly easy way to clean up the "All contacts" entries that are not in "My Contacts."

CAVEAT: ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR CONTACTS FIRST.
I typically export My Contacts in both the Gmail and Outlook formats every few weeks just in case using the export function.

Because the method I outline here includes deleting contacts and reimporting, this is especially important. If you do not backup your contacts, you will lose them at some point if you aren't careful. Contacts backup takes only a few moments and minimal disk space, so there's really no reason not to.

Steps for Cleanup
===============
1. Backup your "My Contacts" (and "All Contacts" if you think you might want to keep some.)
You can do this using the Export link at the top of the contacts page and saving them to a local file.
***You will be DELETING them, so be sure the file saved correctly. I use a temporary alternate Gmail acct to test it.***

2. Click on 'My Contacts' in the left column, then click on 'All' next to 'Select' in the middle column. This will select all of your contacts.

3. Here's the scary part: Once all of your 'My Contacts' are selected - click the 'Delete Contacts' button on the top right of the page to delete them all.
Now, all that's left are the contacts that were previously listed in 'All Contacts' but were not in 'My Contacts'.

4. Now click on 'All Contacts' in the left column then click on 'All' next to 'Select' in the middle column. This will select the remaining contacts.

5. Click the 'Delete Contacts' button on the top right of the page to delete them all. There should be no contacts listed in either "My Contacts" or "All Contacts."

6. If you have not run screaming from the room yet, click on 'Import' on the top right of the page, click the 'Browse...' button and find the backup copy of your 'My Contacts' you made before starting this process. Select the backup file, then click the 'Import' button at bottom.

You should now have a pristine copy of 'My Contacts' with nothing in 'All Contacts.' You may now return to your obsessive Gmail lifestyle.

Here is another work-around that may be helpful.  It will take a number of steps (one for each letter of the alphabet):

1. Open up your Contacts.
2. In the Search Contacts box, type an "a".  This will list all contacts with an "a" in two lists -- one called "My Contacts" and one called "Other Contacts".
3. Delete, merge or otherwise deal with the contacts in the "Other Contacts" list.
4. Repeat with "b" in the search box.
5. Etc.

Not too elegant, but it works.

Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? SN 9/25/09 12:19 PM
Also, pressing space bar, in contacts search box, provides 'my contacts' from 'other contacts' but does not provide any sequence, i.e. newest added to either list, alphabetical etc.

ANSWER TO ALL!!!!
ok thank me later... I wont be back to check on this but here is how it works:
(1) go through your list and select using ctrl those who you dont want in my contacts.
(2) click on the groups button (the edit button to the left will be grayed out)
(3) select your choice, namely "remove from... my contacts"

BINGO.

have fun y'all.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? TheDewi 4/28/10 8:23 PM
Workaround: search "All Contacts" for space (" "). This shows all contacts, but grouped by type.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? LordSwarovski 5/8/10 2:13 PM
My contacts and All contacts seems important for my Google-Mobile sync-ing.

It won't copy contacs from All Contacts, but will copy My Contacts to my cell phone... So this is extremlely usefull for me...
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? JM93 5/19/10 3:02 PM
JC, Google!  this is the stupidest thing.

Just make us one contact list.  we'll decide which ones get categorized. life is too short for us to figure out the difference between all and my contacts in your little google system world.

in the real world, All are My and My are All, there shouldn't be two separate lists.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? MAMBOLERO 5/26/10 2:07 PM
@JM93 -- I'm with you!  I don't want to have to "work around" this:  I only need one list.  One.  O - N - E.  I don't even care what they call it.  As you pointed out, "In the REAL world, All are My and My are All."  I'm tired of having to glean through my two unwanted lists, trying to sort out who is in ALL that isn't in MY -- or is it the other way 'round?
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? lhaake 8/29/10 12:08 PM
Ok, here's another one for you all...if I add a contact using the Contact app on my iphone (3GS), it shows up in the 'All Contacts' list and 'iphone Sync', but doesn't show up in the 'All on iphone' list. It would be so helpful if I understood these lists so I could better manage them.

Also, my contacts get messed up (such as some of the "favorites" names will go away) when I sync my phone to the computer. This may be because of my last statement, or a google thing...

I may have lost people...I haven't really looked at all yet. I agree with all that there can be two lists; 'my contacts' and 'other contacts'. I also think it should show up on my phone as such so I know what the heck I'm looking at and can figure out where the problem lies if there is any.

Feedback anyone?

Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? VSM 9/7/10 1:31 PM
Another one:  I decided that my iMac and/or iPhone are quick enough so who cares how many people there are in 'My Contacts'. So yesterday I decided to put 'All Contacts'  in 'My Contacts'.

Happy me.

But today Google decided only 1/3 of 'My Contacts'  are supposed to be in 'My Contacts'  so 2/3 of them are put back in 'All Contacts'.

Not funny at all.......

I can not for the life of me figure out why Google overrides this action I took without 'asking' .....?
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? merlin999 9/26/10 8:41 AM
OK, I am speaking now to GOOGLE.  You can see the frustration and angst caused by these two lists.  It is evident in the long conversation above.  Here's my question: What are you going to do about this???

Greetings all,

I am most pleased to find so many kind and thoughtful people generously sharing their knowledge and experience.  I consider myself of average intelligence, and as I would really rather be doing something other than searching for correct answers, it is a pleasure to read coherant, well-written explanations.  Owing to contributors like JJJT, I have been able to quickly resolve my issues.  I am truly grateful to see cooperation and simple kindness like this still in the world I live in.   Thank you all.
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? fleche123 12/18/10 7:06 AM
I used to think that 'my contacts' included people I directly addressed , while 'other contacts' were those included as addresses when I and they were sent general emails by common 'friends'. I was wrong. Anyway this would not have been so useful, but at least it would have made sense (to me) I am right now looking up addresses to send Christmas greetings, and have to check both lists. Isn't that absurd?
Re: What's the difference between "my contacts" and "all contacts"? tham 12/23/10 9:05 AM
I do not udnerstand the fuss.
I went to folder "other contacts". choose them all and clicked on add to my contacts.
Now they are all in one folder: "contacts"
The I went to more actions and did a find and merge duplicates
