Groups in Gmail Longer Working Scott J. Vander Hart 1/13/14 5:51 AM
The groups my contacts were organized into are no longer accurate.  I have roughly 25 groups that I have set up.  Some no longer have any contacts in them and others contain a few that were previously assigned.
Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working Pete Biss 1/13/14 6:44 AM
I've had exactly the same problem - at least half my 500+ Contacts are no longer in the Groups they were in - it took me weeks to get them all set up

Some contacts were in several groups, I use them extensively to quickly find people and companies on my phone

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working wdurham 1/13/14 7:18 AM
Do you access your Google Contacts with any other device?  If so, please say what device you use and does that device sync to any other contact service or account, apart from your Google Contacts?

If you do not, what browser are you using to access your account? And are you using MacOS, Windows?  Is your account a plain vanilla Gmail account or a Google Apps account?

Do the apparently missing contacts still exist? Do you still see them in My Contacts? What about in Other Contacts?

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working Pete Biss 1/13/14 7:44 AM
Hi, thanks for prompt response.

I only access from IE 11 on a Windows 7 Pro PC and an Android phone: Samsung Galaxy Express GT-I8730 running Android 4.1.2 - only Syncs to Google.

plain Gmail account

All contacts seem to exist (total in "My contacts" seems about right), just most no longer seem to be in their Groups - some Groups now empty, some half only a few of the ones that were in before.

This seems to have happened in the last day or so.

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working wdurham 1/13/14 9:22 AM
OK - the Gmail team have been advised of this, so keep an eye open on this thread for any response.

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working Scott J. Vander Hart 1/13/14 9:36 AM
Thanks.  I usually access my contents through Firefox or Chrome depending on the computer, and have my contacts synced with my Android.  My contacts were not deleted, but the majority were no longer assigned to groups.  Fortunately, I had not made any edits in the last couple of days and was able to restore my contacts, which corrected the problem with groups.
Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working Pete Biss 1/13/14 2:14 PM
thanks - I've restored too, and it has sorted me, although I know I've updated one or two in the last couple of days, but can't remember which!

Thank you for your reply,
I only access from IE 10 on a Windows 7 pro PC-I have a plain Gmail account-

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working wdurham 1/13/14 9:36 PM
Hi, everyone -

The team have asked if possible can you provide some of this info?

Do you access your Google Contacts with any other device?  If so, please say what device you use and does that device sync to any other contact service or account, apart from your Google Contacts?

Which Android OS are you using?  ICS/Jellybean/KitKat? Or earlier?

If you do not, what browser are you using to access your account? And are you using MacOS, Windows?  Is your account a plain vanilla Gmail account or a Google Apps account?

Do the apparently missing contacts still exist? Do you still see them in My Contacts? What about in Other Contacts?

Also, to enable a comprehensive bug report to be filed by the team:

- Please confirm that the affected account is the one you are using to post here in the Forum
- Will you grant permission for Google to look at the user account info?
- Which contact(s) are dropping out of groups and name(s) of group(s)
- Approximate date and time when user noticed contact dropped from group
- Approximate date when user added contact to group (if they can recall)

In the meantime, you should be able to roll back your contacts to a point before the error occurred.  Switch to Contacts, click More and choose Restore. It might also be an idea to take a quick backup once you've done this by exporting All Contacts to a Gmail compatible CSV file.
Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working Monice Oliphant 1/14/14 9:41 AM
I use Samsung Galaxy s4, which is Android version 4.2.2.  My gmail account is the only account I sync with on my phone.  I do have two gmail accounts.
I notice the dropped contacts on Monday morning.  I used the accounts and groups on Saturday afternoon.  I set up these contacts and groups three years ago and only keep them updated.
Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working DGosho 1/14/14 10:37 AM
I noticed this issue Yesterday when I attempted to send a text message to my daughter from my cell phone. Her name did not appear in my contact list. I ended up going to an old message from her and replying.
Then I tried to text a friend. Same thing.
Today, at work, I attempted to send an email to a group that usually has 25 people in it. Only four names populated the "To:" field. I then went to my Google contacts, entered a single space in the search field and hit search button. It looks like more than a third of my 1900+ contacts are no longer in groups.
I was able to do a restore back to normal. Thank you for having that available.

Do you access your Google Contacts with any other device? I have a home PC, a work laptop, and an android phone that I access my contact from.
On the home PC and Laptop (both Windows 7) I primarily use Chrome. I have multiple accounts. The one I am posting from is the only one that I noticed the problem in. The others are Google Apps accounts.

If so, please say what device you use and does that device sync to any other contact service or account, apart from your Google Contacts?
My phone is a Motorola Photon 4G
Which Android OS are you using?  2.3.5

Do the apparently missing contacts still exist? All the contacts still existed, about half just lost their group label, across multiple groups.

Also, to enable a comprehensive bug report to be filed by the team:

- Please confirm that the affected account is the one you are using to post here in the Forum - Check
- Will you grant permission for Google to look at the user account info? - Yes
- Which contact(s) are dropping out of groups and name(s) of group(s) Too many to list. It seems to be across the board. One group called HC - Current lost 21 out of 25 contacts.
- Approximate date and time when user noticed contact dropped from group. Yesterday, in the afternoon (around 5:30pm Pacific)
- Approximate date when user added contact to group (if they can recall) In the above example, those 25 contacts have been added over a span of 3 years.

I access my Google Contacts through https://www.google.com/contacts/, a Moto X, and a Nexus 7. I also have an HTC Sensation 4G that syncs occasionally but is usually offline.

The phones and tablet all sync with another Google Apps account as well as with Google+. The Moto X also syncs with UberSync for Facebook (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ro.weednet.contactssync&hl=en). Can't remember if the other devices do or not.

Moto X and Nexus 7 are on latest official KitKat release. HTC Sensation is on a custom KitKat ROM.

Using Chrome under Linux to access a plain vanilla Gmail account.

> Do the apparently missing contacts still exist? Do you still see them in My Contacts? What about in Other Contacts?

They all exist in My Contacts and in one of Friends/Family/Coworkers (if they were in one of those 3 groups originally). They are missing from the rest of the groups they used to be in.

Yep

I don't see any pattern to which contacts dropped out of their groups and which ones stayed. Don't want to share the group names publicly, but feel free to contact me privately for more details.

Sometime in the past couple weeks. Might be around the same time I bought my Moto X, though I can't say for sure if the timing lines up.

Most of the contacts have been in their groups for months/years.

Same issue here. Was told to post to this link as the Google team is currently aware of the issue and working to resolve it.

Mine syncs with a Samsung Galaxy S4 SCH-I545 / Android 4.3 for about a year with no issues noted in the past. It only syncs with Google accounts. I have 3 separate google accounts that sync with my device. No issues noted in those accounts as of yet. It syncs with my Calendar, Tasks, Drive, Gmail for this account. I have a Google Apps account (I believe). I occasionally sync with Outlook but not very often and not since this has happened.

I use Chrome and sometimes explorer. I access my Google accounts via Window 8 primarily but also access it from my iPad and a Mac (Lion).

Confirmed- Please confirm that the affected account is the one you are using to post here in the Forum

I am having this issue as well. Besides web browswer access, I use my Verizon Droid Razr M phone (Jelly Bean 4.1) and my 2012 Nexus 7 tablet (KitKat 4.4). I've noticed the issue today a few weeks ago the first time but I can't remember the date. I updated the contacts into their proper groups then, but the issue reappeared today. My contacts don't seem to be missing, they just lose their group assignment. It is probably well over half of my contacts that have this issue, and most of the groups.

The team have asked if possible can you provide some of this info?

Do you access your Google Contacts with any other device?  If so, please say what device you use and does that device sync to any other contact service or account, apart from your Google Contacts?

I use my Droid Razr smartphone, on Android.  It is linked to my Facebook account (and the phone combines Facebook friends and Google contacts when I access my phone's contacts list), and it also backs up with "Backup Assistant Plus"

Which Android OS are you using?  ICS/Jellybean/KitKat? Or earlier?

I have no idea.  I bought the phone November 2012.

If you do not, what browser are you using to access your account? And are you using MacOS, Windows?  Is your account a plain vanilla Gmail account or a Google Apps account?

When I use my computer to access Gmail, I use a Windows 8 machine with a Firefox browser.  My account is a plain vanilla Gmail account.

Do the apparently missing contacts still exist? Do you still see them in My Contacts? What about in Other Contacts?

I haven't gone through all of my contacts, but so far I haven't found any missing, or any that are missing data besides what group(s) they're supposed to be in.  I never use Other Contacts, so I have no idea what's supposed to be in there.

Also, to enable a comprehensive bug report to be filed by the team:

Yes

- Will you grant permission for Google to look at the user account info?

Yes

- Which contact(s) are dropping out of groups and name(s) of group(s)

The groups are Augustana, Birka, Confirmation, Council (Aug), and Council (Birka)  In all groups I've lost about half of the people who should be in the group.  In the case of the Confirmation group, the three currently present are the three added this year; the five who were in the group last year when I created it have disappeared.  I haven't noticed anybody added to the wrong group.

- Approximate date and time when user noticed contact dropped from group

I noticed people were missing from the Confirmation group on 1/15 at about 3:30PM.  I noticed people were missing from Council (Aug) on 1/16 at about 2:15PM (I'm in Central Time Zone).

- Approximate date when user added contact to group (if they can recall)

Everyone in Council (Aug) has been in that group for the last year, since at least January 2013.  The three contacts that remained in Confirmation were added in September; the five that disappeared were added last year around Christmas or so.  (That would be Christmas of 2012)

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working Ivan Mervis 1/16/14 6:37 PM
Access Google Contacts with Samsung Galaxy 3. It only  syncs to Google Contacts

Browser is Firefox. Windows XP. plain vanilla Gmail account

most contacts still exist in My Contacts.

this problem happened on my account between Monday noon and Tuesday noon. very random on which records were affected. taking forever to fix manually. How do I restore contacts? Never knew that was an option.

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working crimedoc 1/17/14 8:10 PM
Same problem here - some contacts are no longer in the groups to which I assigned them.  After I ran a restore (back one week), that was fixed but now all the contacts starting with T-Z are not visible in the general My Contacts page.  If a contact starting with, say, W is in a group, I can find it there, but it's not visible unless I go into that group (even though the contact also belongs to the My Contacts group.  If one of these T-Z contacts is not in one of my special groups (not every contact is in one), then I can't find it.

These are not newly added contacts; most of them I've had since I originally set up my Gmail account.

I access my contacts on my Windows 7 desktop and laptop using Firefox, my cell phone (Samsung Galaxy S-3) and my tablet (Samsung Galaxy Note 8).

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working dcpetty 1/18/14 10:04 AM
I do not know if this is a related problem: I have contacts in groups, but when I add a group to an e-mail message some of the contacts are dropped. For example, in Contacts view the group says (68) next to it, but when I add it to BCC it only lists 59 contacts added. (I only noticed this yesterday. I have searched this forum for help and this was the closest post I found.)

It appears that I have way fewer problems than many who have posted here, but it is still a screw up w/ groups so I posted it here. Thanks.

crimedoc -

You are indeed suffering from this glitch, but your main problem, as already explained in your own topic, is that you are only looking at the first page of your contacts.  To see more of your contacts - in your case, those which appear after T in the alphabet - move to the next page of the alphabetical listing.  See the screenshot:

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working CGWaters 1/19/14 10:40 AM
I noticed the contacts group problem yesterday.

>>Do you access your Google Contacts with any other device?  If so, please say what device you use and does that device sync to any other contact service or account, apart from your Google Contacts?
I'm using Google Chrome (on three Windows PCs and one Mac). I'm also using the People app on four Android devices (three KitKat; one Jellybean).

Rolling back to Friday's backup (17-Jan) did not restore the contacts to the groups. I had to roll back to last week's backup.

This issue is now being reported by our CM as fixed - see one of the other threads here: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/gmail/oXUQ9oLhRkE

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working mstitus 1/22/14 4:43 AM
I also have over 1,200 contacts that were assigned to multiple groups.  Almost all of those groups have lost significant numbers of contacts (the contacts still seem to be in "my contacts" though.)

I use gmail via chromebrowser on a pc as well as via 2 iphones and 2 ipads.  I have never noticed any issues with this until the past couple weeks.

I see you have posted that the problem is fixed.  What does this mean?  I have already started reorganizing my contacts.  Will they be re-arranged by google again?  Is this problem likely to happen again - contacts falling off of groups?

Thank you for your reply.

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working Arodon 1/22/14 5:15 AM
I had the same issue yesterday! (Win7, Chrome, Android 4.2)
If you guys have your contacts downloaded as a csv-file recently, you can import all again (don't delete the existing, otherwise all your assigned pics are gone) and then merge all duplicated contacts.

There have been a few to merge manually, but over all it was fixed within 15 minutes (including thinking how to fix).

Don't forget to download a csv-file right when you have finished the fix ;-)

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working Heidi Karod 1/23/14 7:15 PM
All contacts have disappeared from my group contacts. The folder is still there but the contacts are gone. They still appear under the individual's name but are no longer in the group. I really don't want to reconstruct everything.

I have used a MacBook for a long time and also an iPhone. I recently added an iPad. Also, I recently started using Google+ after a long hiatus (I updated my profile and created a circle).

I have a huge number of contacts as I belong to several large groups. How can I resolve this problem without spending hours restoring groups?

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working wdurham 1/23/14 10:49 PM
The issue which caused the problem with contact Group tags being removed is now fixed.

According to our CM, your Groups should be restored.  See here: http://productforums.google.com/d/msg/gmail/oXUQ9oLhRkE/eFwhxDG2Ar4J

If not, to restore your contacts to their previous state, go to Contacts, click More and choose Restore.
Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working RobLeb 1/24/14 8:18 PM
Still doesn't work !  Tried restore back for various periods (one hour, one day, one week...) and nothing... please help !
Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working google contacts problem 1/27/14 1:20 PM
The problem doesn't seem to be fixed on my end, as I didn't notice this until today, days after you said this has been fixed. I assume that 'fixed' means those who were affected would never notice any issue if they didn't notice anything wrong in the first place.

I won't give the details about my account. But one thing I noticed is most, if not all, of the affected contacts of mine have address while those intact ones don't have one, just phone numbers and email addresses. Hopefully this would give you guys some info about what went wrong.

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working wdurham 1/28/14 2:14 AM
To everyone still being affected by this problem, see this post from our Community Manager on another thread:

If you want to take advantage of the offer of extra help with this, and you don't want to post an email address or give any account details publicly, then you may simply need to confirm that the affected account is the one you are using to post with in this Forum.

Your individual problems cannot be addressed unless Google know which accounts need looking at.....

Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working google contacts problem 1/28/14 9:03 AM
I have manually fixed those affected ones, about 30 something. If this happens again, I'll certainly ask Google to help out, and I hope I have no change to do so.
Re: Groups in Gmail Longer Working WeeWillie 1/28/14 5:13 PM
I seem to have the same issue. The account in question is plain Gmail, accessed from Chrome (PC XP, up-to-date as far as XP can be) and via Samsung Galaxy SIII (Verizon) Android 4.3. The contact groups apparently corrupted between 13 and 27 Jan 2014. Maybe it's a coincidence, that's about the window when VZW delivered the 4.3 upgrade.

As far as I can tell, the contacts are still intact and still in the "My Contacts" group. There are a few hundred entries in "Other Contacts"; not sure if that's what it should be, but it's not empty.

In a typical case, most--but not all--of the contacts fell out my user-created groups. The contacts that have become disassociated from the groups are still associated with G+ circles.

I use Google Voice extensively, primarily from the same browser and the associated Android app. I have accessed GV from a Dolphin 10.2.0 browser on a Nook tablet.

(I also have a Google Apps account, but didn't access it during this window.)

Other apps on the Galaxy offer to do great things if I just permit them access to my contacts, et al. I decline those gracious offers. So as far as I know, no other service has access.

Looking at one group, almost all contacts that became dissociated had street addresses, and those without street addresses remained. (One contact with a street address remained associated.)

This is the account. Okay to look. (I have repaired the group I use most frequently.) Anything else useful I can add?

Thank you.

Similar problem here.  *Many* contacts lost group tags.  As someone previously mentioned there seems to be a correlation to contacts with postal addresses.

Using an HTC EVO 4G LTE running Android 4.1.1.
Using Firefox v26.0 on Windows.

Need this fixed please.

My groups are still there somewhere because they come up when I type them into an email.  However I can not access them in contacts.  It is not showing any groups on the right hand side and when I try to create a new group it doesn't show up or let me add any contacts, but it is there somewhere becasue I can't create another group of the same name.  This means I can't edit or add to any of my groups.

I have a Google Apps for Business account. Today I noticed all my contacts are there but many have been removed from the groups that they were assigned to earlier.

I'm using Chrome on Windows 7 as well as a Nexus 7 and HTC one.

My groups are in the Contacts - but the groups have no contacts in them.  I think all of the contacts are individually in my contact list - but they no longer have the group names associated to them
