|Recent change in IMAP implementation regarding "Seen" flag?||zachscrivena||11/4/09 6:01 AM|
Has there been a recent change (around 2009-11-03) in Gmail's IMAP implementation regarding when messages are marked "seen" or "read"?
My email client which connects to Gmail through IMAP is suddenly causing fetched messages to be automatically marked as "seen/read" when it didn't use to do that in the past 1.5 years (there has been no changes to the client). Can anyone explain this behavior, and if so, is this a glitch or has Google decided to update its IMAP implementation for good?

i have not seen that change yet, using either Thunderbird or a terminal session.
What IMAP client are you using?

Read this article about the issue. Not sure about the fix though...

So, the "bug" is that Google fixed an old bug?
The IMAP specification requires that messages fetched with the FETCH .. BODY command be marked as seen, but Google did not do so. Many users have asked for this fix. (I have not seen this change in my accounts yet, but will watch for it.)
i do not understand how this could be causing problems for any correctly written IMAP program.

Thanks for posting (and thanks to bkennelly for jumping in on this issue)! You're right that we made a change to Gmail IMAP yesterday. The change was intended to to fix a minor but long-standing bug (which bkennelly mentioned), but it turned out that there were some IMAP clients out there that had become dependent on how we do things - which caused the behavior you noticed. We've since reverted the the change until we can work with the developers of those IMAP clients.
For a more detailed explanation, I've made a general announcement under the POP and IMAP section of the forum.

Thanks to all for your replies! The problem was temporary, as explained by Shirley. I will work on a fix for the client so that it doesn't break when Gmail pushes their IMAP bug fix.
(For the record, the email client is GmailAssistant, which uses JavaMail.)

Hello, since yesterday began to appear all mail marked as read. After seeing several posts, disable a program I use "Gmail_Backup" accessed through IMAP.
I use it for several months and had no problems so far. Another thing I noticed is that when entering Gmail (Google Apps in my case) Firefox gave me a warning about the SSL certificate was invalid. I think Google probably has changed my server where do I get my mail. To be more clear, there are several accounts that have this problem under a single domain managed by Google Apps.
If anyone has any Suggestion or information on any changes made these days about IMAP in Gmail, I'd appreciate me saying anything to anyone.

I just tested with my account, and verified that the fix Shirley mentioned above is now active again. Apparently, if Gmail-Backup is causing your messages to be marked as Seen, then it is using the wrong fetch commands. You should contact the developers for a fix.
