|Synchronizing subscribed folders for Gmail hanging after a while with Outlook 2010||nicolo||9/25/10 3:32 PM|
Explain your issue in full detail here: I have read all the threads about only downloading headers etc.and acted upon the advice but the problem persists. When I first open Outlook it syncs fine, and for the next few attempts (it is set to Send / Receive every 60 seconds). However after a few minutes Outlook hangs, and when I go to force close via Task Manager there seem to be 3 Outlook processes running. When I close terminate one, Outlook fires itself up and is good for another 5 - 10 minutes. Any ideas anyone?

Program and version you use to access Gmail (e.g. Internet Explorer 7 or Outlook 2003): Outlook 2010 w/ IMAP for email
Your antivirus software (e.g. Norton 2007): Microsoft Security Essentials
Any extensions, toolbars or plug-ins: Mindjet Mindmanager

I am having the same general issue except the hang is pretty immediate, just not obvious until a couple of minutes after launch of outlook when I see a message that Outlook is not responding. The send/receive status is stuck at 60% to 70%. Restarting Outlook does not usually result in proper operation, but does occasionally.
OS is Windows 7, 64 bit
Outlook 2007 with IMAP setup
Antivirus is AVG free version 10.0.1153
No other email accounts are set up other than the gmail one.
The problem may have something to do with the Windows Live programs, since the issue seems to have popped up around the same time as I installed the Windows Live stuff.
The only thing I have found that seems to be a reasonable fix is to change the gmail account to use POP connection method as opposed to IMAP.

I had AVG 2011 running with Outlook 2003 without any problems. Upgraded to Office 2010, which contained Outlook 2010 and the synchronisation problems started.
When the IMAP account is first created, it sync's OK for the first time only. Second and subsequent times Outlook hangs on synchronisation of IMAP folders.
I disabled the AVG add-in and the problem has disappeared.
Enabled the AVG add-in and the problem re-appears
Conclusion: This problem only occurs with Outlook 2010 and the AVG 2011add-in.

WireTown Man, by AVG ad-in, I assume you are referring to the AVG email scanner feature. I have tried disabling this feature and in my case Outlook still hangs while updating the mailbox most of the time. My version of Outlook is 2007, so that could be the difference. At any rate I am still not able to use the Google account with Outlook setup in the IMAP mode.

I had the same issue when trying to connect to my gmail account. The way I solved this issue for me was to follow the following steps.
1) Navigate to File >> Options >> Advanced >> scroll down to the send/receive heading >> click on the send/receive button on the right
2) On the right hand side of the send/receive groups window that opens click on the Edit button
3) Un-check the "Get folder unread count for subscribed folders"
4) under Received mail items, check the option "User the custom behavior defined below"
5) In the window below that displays your Gmail folders just select inbox and leave the others unchecked6) click ok and then exit out of options and perform a send/receive to test if it is now working
Hope this helps.
