|Iphone 4 imap.gmail.com server is not responding||DoubleG||8/4/10 1:54 AM|
Explain your issue in full detail here: gmail was working on my iphone 4 perfectly but last couple of days been getting the following message when trying to access my mails "Cannot Get Mail. The mail server "imap.gmail.com" is notresponding. Verify that you have enterend the correct account info in Mail settings. I have not adjusted any seetings or passwords so can't understand why it's stopped working. I am using the iphones default e-mail applications. Any help on this one would be great. I even tried deleting the account off the phone and inputting the details again worked for one download then stopped working again.

how do i change the imap server on the iphone?Settings --> Mail --> your gmail account --> Account Info --> Incoming Mail Server --> Host Name.
Change the server from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com
That worked for me for a few days, then it went back to not working. Switching back to gmail didn't work. Captcha unlock didn't work. Grrrr.

Same here. gmail stopped working, switched to googlemail, worked for a while, now it fails too. Mail on iPad and OS X still works fine. I suspect something in a recent iOS 4 update is triggering some "feature" in gmail that tries to throttle the imap server.

This is weird. I haven't been able receive any Gmail IMAP emails since October 10th. I tried everything. Then just now I deleted the account and re-added it. It now seems to work but I'm not convinced a simple delete and then add fixed this.
Perhaps the boys and girls at Google have been playing around with this.

@ptwithy: I'm having exactly the same problem as you with the same results switching between googlemail and gmail having helped and then no longer working this past week. Frustrating that I can't find a good answer online. Perhaps we need to call Apple....

I deleted my gmail account, re-added it and it works. The only peculiar thing is when I go into Settings --> Mail --> Gmail --> Account Info, no Incoming Server is shown, just my Gmail Account Information and Outgoing Mail Server and Advance. Anyone else get this?

I am having same problem and also can't find an incoming server to change to google from gmail. What's my next step? delete account and add it again?

I'm having the same exact problem. Changing server to imap.googlemail.com helped for about a week and then it stopped working also. Unlocked captcha, deleted/readded, changed password...everything. Nothing is helping and pissed that google has not stepped in to offer direction.

Had the same issue for the last few weeks. I would receive but my iPhone 3G running on iOS 4 would not send via imap.gmail.com... Then I read the news that now Gmail is always using HTTPS or SSL -- changed the setting of the Outgoing Mail Server (Primary: smtp.gmail.com) and, changed the setting from Use SSL (OFF) to Use SSL (ON) and from the first try, it worked! The email was sent moments after saving the new settings.

Same problem. Just crept up about a week ago (Dec 9th). Here is what I have tried and the results
--Switching from gmail to googlemail and vice versa. RESULT? It works for 1-3 days then it stops recognizing and I have to switch back
--Setting outgoing mail server to SMTP.GMAIL.COM and setting SSL =ON. RESULT? This was always my setting so the error still occurs when this is set up in this fashion.
--UnlockCaptcha. RESULT? Works for a couple minutes to a week.
--Delete and re-add. RESULT? When I had this problem last year, I ended up doing this and it worked...well for about a year. I haven't tried it with the latest problems because it is a pain but it is on the to-do list.
Anyone close to Google or Apple know if either company is concerned about rooting this out. If this persists I need to either stop using gmail or stop using the IPhone. Neither of which I want to do...

See if there is a folder called Recovered Messages with a whole bunch of messages in it. Try deleting that folder and wait 24 hours and see if that fixes it.

My wifes iPhone 4 just did this problem, saying something about an SSL server problem. I meesed about deleting and re-installing the acct to no avail. I checked all the settings and they were identical to my phones acct so I just deleted the acct, did a hard reboot (pressing the button on the front and the top simultaneously for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears) and then re-installed the Gmail acct again and hey presto, all is fine again! Hope this helps!

I had same problem.
I changed Notes setting of my gmail account.(ON->OFF or OFF->ON)
So it is worked.
Please try it.

Hey all, just a suggestion, do not use Wi-Fi. It seems that once you use Wi-Fi to retrieve your mail, it will stop working. I tested it out and I found out that it's the Wi-Fi problem for mine.

turns out that deleting my account and re-adding it was the simple fix (for now) for me. Good luck!

I have had this issue off and on for 6 months...sometimes it worked, others not so much.
I am now uing and iPhone4. Deleted account. Turned phone off for 10 seconds, uploaded gmail info as all stated above, STILL the same im...@gmail not responding stuff.
Went into the advanced setting and the "imap prefix" field was blank and showed a /
typed imap.googlemail.com and hit save. went into my mail acount on the phone and uplaoded my 50 msg's instantly...

A work around that I found out can be found here, just follow the instructions.
Hope it helps.
