Use the Text Messaging (SMS) in Chat lab experiment - by The SMS Team

This allows you to send and receive text messages (SMS) in Chat.

Go to the Labs, scroll down to find the lab experiment itself, enable it, Save Changes, then turn on Chat, and use the experiment to send your SMS message.
Depending on where you are in the world, you may have to pay if there's a charge made.

Hi there JohnW2,
Thank you for your reply regarding SMS and chat and getting a text message from Gmail to my cell phone.

I am trying to send a ring tone that I made from my computer to a phone that I only use text messaging on.
I made a 30 second sound clip on from an free music editor and  now I want to go to my phone where I hope I can get it to become a ringtone.

O.k. so how do I get the ringtone from my gmail account to my phone via text?

Thank you,
Andrew

You need to talk to the phone company about that. It has nothing to do with Gmail!!

Yes, talk to your cell phone carrier, but if the person is with AT&T, send an email with [cellphonenumber]@txt.att.net as the recipient.

example: 55512...@txt.att.net

:-)

I don't know about actual SMS or the costs involved... but you can *email* a cell phone (at no cost, except the usual text-message cost on their end) and they will receive it as a text message. They can usually hit reply and respond to your gmail account as well.

Just type in their cell phone number (without a +1 up front), @ the domains listed below, depending on which provider they are using.

For example, if my friend uses verizon I would email 86055...@vtext.com

To text T-mobile, the domain is @tmomail.net
To text Verizon, the domain is @vtext.com
To text AT&T, the domain is @txt.att.net
To text VMobile, the domain is @vmobl.com

If you cant get g-mail to upload a homemade ringtone to your phone there is a website that will do it for free. Go to  www.myxer.com. They have tons of free stuff and a web ap that will take your sound file, convert it to yours phone's format, trim or loop it (if you want to) and send it to your phone. It will work with most cell phones made in the last 5 years and most major providers..
