What happened to my canned responses? djackson 8/7/09 2:24 PM
I have some canned responses that I use pretty regularly.  Today, they are gone!  Was there a recent change in this code?  I know it's a lab feature so it's still in beta but I'm sad to see them gone.

I just checked -  worked for me. Do you mean that the canned responses that you saved disappeared?
Re: What happened to my canned responses? djackson 8/7/09 3:28 PM
Yup, they are gone without a trace.

All mine are gone as well.
Re: What happened to my canned responses? jpsj 8/8/09 12:05 PM
Mine are gone as well!   This is very bad as I used them alot and have no real back up of this info.
Re: What happened to my canned responses? djackson 8/8/09 12:25 PM
I just switched to the older version to check but the "Canned Response" isn't even available.  Switching back shows the new one I created yesterday but not any of my old ones.  BTW, I recreated my most used one with a new name in case the old one re-appears.

Re: What happened to my canned responses? djackson 8/8/09 12:26 PM
@jpsj:  I'm not even sure how you would back them up besides manual copying the text and the name or grabbing the text from a sent email.

@JohnW2: i updated to Firefox 3.5 the other day but I don't see how that would affect something I saved in gmail.

I use the current GMail and Firefox 3.0.14. Every so often, one of my canned responses disappears too. I chalked the disappearances up to gremlins, but if there is programming problem at fault I would certainly appreciate if it could be fixed. Losing canned responses is a real nuisance. Yes, I can recreate them by copy/paste from previous msgs, but that is a waste of time.

I lost a canned response when I accidentally deleted it from drafts. Check trash.
Re: What happened to my canned responses? djackson 12/8/09 1:09 PM
@oriconum: it's too far gone now.  I'll keep that in mind in the future though.

djackson, I have met the same problem with you today in my Google Apps account, even if I create a new email, paste the signature, save it in Canned response, it seems saved successfully, but I can not insert it. Sad but true. Anyone met the same problem?

Even in yesterday, everything is ok.
Re: What happened to my canned responses? djackson 1/4/10 7:22 AM
Zhigang_Wu: My currently saved one is inserting fine.  This is in a gmail account and not a Google Apps account.

I have a canned response I want to edit. Can't find it ANYWHERE in settings. Anyone know where to find it?
Re: What happened to my canned responses? djackson 1/20/10 10:45 AM
I'm pretty sure you'll have to re-create it:  drop the canned response in a blank message, edit, and save.

i was having this problem as well, and i think i have figured out how to fix it. keep a copy of the canned response by itself as a draft. this trick has been working for me for a week or so now with no problems!
Re: What happened to my canned responses? jpsj 4/9/10 4:19 AM
My canned responses just disappeared again--third time!!!! for google mail.  My Google Apps seems to be fine.

I'm a novice at this canned response thing, so I'm curious... how does one create a canned response to begin with? I was creating filters when i saw the canned response option, but it does not allow me to select it. I have several draft emails created so I'm assuming that has nothing to do with it....??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I think I have an answer for you guys. It seems that canned responses are saved as Drafts (in the Drafts folder) but they are invisible. So if you use the 'Discard drafts' button you will obliterate your (invisible) canned responses along with genuine drafts. Canned responses are great, but they need a special folder where we can see and manage them. At the very least, they need to be protected from accidental draft deletion!

Google people, please tell me I'm wrong.

If you want to edit an existing canned response, you should do the following:
- compose a new message
- insert the canned response (from the canned responses menu)
- edit the canned response in the message
- save the canned response (from the canned response menu), you will get a pop-up warning about overwriting the existing one.

Mine have gone as well. Its a damn nuisance!

Re: What happened to my canned responses? DebiW 6/1/10 1:07 PM
My canned responses feature is not even listed. Does anyone know how I can access it?
Re: What happened to my canned responses? JohnW2 6/1/10 10:37 PM
@DebiW -  have you enabled the experiment in the Labs section? Until you do that, you won't see the facility on your Compose Mail page.

Thank you so much for telling me how to enable my canned response! Worked perfect!

@Simon Blackley,

I too have an issue with losing Canned Responses. I did delete them from my Drafts folder and it seems like that's when they disappeared. I need to play with this some more today.

Thanks for the pointer!
Re: What happened to my canned responses? alli.lung 7/18/10 6:46 PM
Yes, the canned responses are "invisible" in the Draft folder. However, if you do a full search for them in Gmail, it will show up as a Draft. Also, if you go to All Mail, you will also be able to see your canned responses as a Draft.

What I do is, after I have created a new canned response, I will look for it in All Mail, and then archive it under a new label. Every time you insert your canned response into an e-mail, Gmail retrieves the response from that Draft. Therefore, I can manually edit my canned responses by clicking into my label and accessing them that way.

I hope this helps some of you.

Lost all of my canned responses...and I was so excited to be able to have different signatures.
Re: What happened to my canned responses? simonheywood 12/20/10 9:34 AM
It is really good to know how to edit a canned response in its form as a hidden draft item.

It would be helpful if the canned responses menu action Insert inserted the name of the canned response in the subject field when you use it.  At present the subject field remains blank. Afterall, the name of the canned response in used in the subject field of the hidden draft item.

One would need to be able to amend the subject field as well as the body text before sending the email, of course.

Is Canned Responses still in the lab?? I can't find it anywhere! I installed it years ago and now want to do it again in a new gmail address, but when I search the lab, I come up with nothing! Any ideas what happened to it?
Re: What happened to my canned responses? JohnW2 2/11/11 9:35 AM
Yes, it's still in the Gmail Labs - but not the Google Labs!
Re: What happened to my canned responses? angela lamb 2/11/11 1:07 PM
Amazing, thanks so much.  I was looking for so long.. and there it was... really,  an easy find in the end.
Re: What happened to my canned responses? Reese 2/15/11 8:00 PM
OK, what am I doing incorrect?
I have created  a couple of different "canned responses". I then addressed an email to one of my other email addresses after which, with the cursor in the body field of the message I clicked on "canned response", then clicked on one of my responses under the "insert"  title with the result being the cursor jumps down a line but nothing appears.
