Do you have the language you want installed in your computer?
If so, use it to write while composing messages in Gmail.

Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) Seth 1/27/10 9:30 PM
Gmail should support the following standard accent keyboard commands that should work on any English keyboard, but they do not.

CTRL + , then c : ç
CTRL + ` (accent under tilde) then a,e,i,o,u : à,è,ì,ò,ù
CTRL + ' (apostrophe) then a,e,i,o,u : á,é,í,ó,ú
CTRL + SHIFT + 6 then a,e,i,o, u : â,ê,î,ô,û
CTRL + SHIFT + : (colon) then a,e,i,o,u: ä,ë,ï,ö,ü

I've tried switching the Gmail language setting (which I didn't want to do in the first place) and that doesn't work either. I know that it's not my computer, because I've tried on others as well. Gmail: Please fix this!!!

The best solution I have come up with is using the shortcuts above to type the email in MS Word and copying and pasting back to Gmail. This is frustrating and a bit more time consuming, but at least you won't look like an idiot if you have to correspond with someone in another language (French in my case).

How many other people are just as frustrated as me with this problem?
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) SN 1/27/10 10:30 PM
Could also Google search for a foreign language or international keyboard to purchase.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) Seth 1/27/10 10:56 PM
I'm not interested in lugging around another keyboard, or having to pay for another keyboard unnecessarily. It would be easier to continue to copy and paste from Word, although that is frustrating to begin with. Google just has to do something about it and start support these standard keyboard commands. It would be an easy fix. I put in a "suggestion", so I'm really hoping they'll do something about it. Otherwise, I'm going to start looking into other email providers.

They really should start supporting these commands out of respect to the English language, which does include accents and umlauts in the proper spelling of words acquired from other languages.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) SN 1/28/10 12:01 AM
Also can use 'alt-key' and (locked) number pad combos; can use Google search for various charts.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) Seth 1/28/10 7:34 AM
Thanks for the info, but I don't have a number pad. I'm using a laptop. I'm not interested in buying anything new that I would have to carry around with me.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) SN 1/28/10 5:01 PM
Experiment with your laptop with this keyboard sequence: (alt-key) [(Fn-key or ScrLck) or some laptops have reversed (Fn-key Alt-key)] and then type (number combos from at top row on laptop); Google search will provide charts specifically for your laptop to copy and paste for quick references on your laptop document.

Should be able to find workable combinations for your specific laptop for easier typing of common accented characters, etc.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) Seth 1/29/10 9:38 AM
Thanks SN. My "character map" says that my laptop should be able to support these, but I've tried them and they don't work. I've used all of the Fn-key and Alt-key combinations with the computer on "Num LK" and "Scroll Lk".

Regardless, I'm going to abandon this type of solution because referring to a 3 or 4 digit code chart every time I need to write a character is way too much of a time consuming nightmare. It would be way faster for me to type my emails into word using the much easier to use CTRL-based shortcuts and then copy them into gmail.

In the meantime, hopefully someone at gmail is listening....PLEASE BEGIN SUPPORTING CTRL-BASED KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS!!!!

Go to http://www.freetranslation.com/, select the language you want to translate to and then select the keyboard for that language on the lower left. Type all the letters you want, and cut and paste them into your email. I select all of them, paste it in and use them as needed. Finally, I delete the list.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) JSTASH 3/2/10 8:39 AM
I agree that Gmail should allow for the control + '  + letter   for instance to insert an accent.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) Raveon123 3/8/10 1:02 PM
Since I type in SP and in EN I configured the keyboard so that with a simple shortcut the keyboard changes.

First enable a Spanish keyboard START-CONTROL PANEL-REGION AND LANGUAGE-KEYBOARD AND LANGUAGES; then select your language. You will now have two keyboards that are active.

To change the keyboard hit L SHIFT+ L ALT and the language changes

Remember that on the SP keyboard the key next to the P will type nothing when you hit it but follow it with and e for instance it will accent it é or ó as an example. On the same keyboard the key next to the L types an ñ

Hop this helps, once you et used to it it's EASY!

why is this so hard?? I need to add a copyright sign

Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) SN 3/14/10 4:30 PM
Hi Fred.King,

For me its too difficult to help since I have no idea; however, if somehow people would start providing the requested information seen in the 'post a question' process then myself and others would have an idea about the brand name of computer desktop or laptop, it's OS, et cetera, and then have at least half a chance of conducting our specific research and might possibly provide a helpful solution.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) belliott4488 4/5/10 8:16 AM
I'll just add my vote - I agree with the OP and can't imagine why it should be a problem for the gmail web app to recognize standard CTRL-key sequences for accented characters. The editor clearly understands them, since you can paste them in place as well as receive them from other people. More significantly, a user with a foreign (to the US) keyboard can simply type the desired character and it works. That means that there is some code being sent by the keyboard that is correctly recognized by the editor. Why can't CTRL-key sequences be recognized as well?

I'll keep copying and pasting if I must, but it's a nuisance and seems unnecessary.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) beechdave 4/7/10 2:22 PM
The BEST ANSWER here is the one from Raveon123, the only reason it is not in the best answer category is because not enough people have voted it as helpful. It is so easy to switch keyboards via software settings, I do it all the time to write in Spanish and English...
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) ntdoherty 4/21/10 7:26 PM
Raveon 123 and beechdave have it. I'm using windows 7 and it will place a 'language bar' on the task bar using approximately the steps outlined by Raveon that allows one to switch the keyboard layout without even having to remember a keystroke combination. It does require an additional language to be installed.

So:
Control Panel -> Clock, Language, and Region -> Region and Language -> Change Keyboards or other input methods -> hit Change Keyboards 'button' -> Under 'Installed services, use Add to select the alternate keyboard (Spanish in my case. You can use a keyboard layout Preview to see what it will be) -> go to the Language Bar tab -> hit 'docked in the taskbar' and check the box for 'Show text labels on the Language bar - hit 'okay' on the windows and you're golden.

Thanks very much Raveon and beechdave

And what about Macs?
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) vasco.roma 5/6/10 7:41 AM
If you are using Firefox, there is an add-on that allows you to do exactly this.  It's called EasyAccent and, though I've just installed it, it seems to work great  in gmail and any other place you would type within Firefox.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) ineke 6/2/10 2:22 AM
Changing the keyboard language with the language bar or SHFT ALT is great, but Gmail-compose message does not follow it. My settings are dutch and US english  (US international for the keyboard) and the keyboard layout gmail chooses for either is FRENCH. The language in my gmail display settings is also english, I just happen to be in France, with my laptop.

Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) grahampcharles 8/9/10 9:26 PM
Those control-key sequences you're all calling "standard" are a Microsoft invention, and as far as I know only work inside their products. Useful, sure, but hardly universal.

Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) slgmitchell 8/25/10 4:06 AM
I don't need to type in another language - I'd just like to enter a British pound symbol every now and then. It seems absurd that a gmail user can insert a pink waving lobster into a message but not a pound sign.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) Childermass 8/31/10 7:00 AM
I can't help those of you with Windows but for é, Mac users can simply use the Option key (alt) and the appropriate letter, so Option e followed by e gives é.  If you mess about with Option and Shift-Option you get all sorts of useful stuff.  Option 3 is £ and Shift-Option K is the cool .  Sorry, Seth, no use to you, I know.  But then the next time you upgrade why not try a Mac.

i just want to change the $ sign to a GBP sign as I have not seen any way to change while in G-mail. I am using an ASUS Laptop. Do not want to have to go to the bother of writing my message in Word and Pasting.   Desmond

What has either 1) Google search or your 2) computer help section, have to offer you for an explanation on how to produce the GBP sign?

Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) nvalbers 1/6/11 10:11 AM
I just figured out tildes in my Apple. I do not know if I selected the tilde as I cannot yet make other diacriticals. Now, tho, I just hold OPTION and press 'n', then let up OPTION and press the letter again VOILA,  ñ.

Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) nvalbers 1/6/11 10:43 AM
On my Apple I am getting it. I don't know how it is set up and can't see "English International" in the System Options, BUT  I hold the OPTION key, press the letter, and let the OPTION key up and press letter again. Different
diacriticals come with different letters:  n,ñ;  e,é, a,å.
Much to learn. I didn't know about the entire OPTIONS keyboard. I need Greek often in math/physics.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) nvalbers 1/6/11 11:19 AM
GOT IT AWRIIIGHT.  Just hold your OPTION key and type the entire keybord. Notice diacriticals as follows :  tilde on 'n', accent on 'e', umlaut on 'u'.  Just hold the OPTION key and type the desirec mark, then let up and type yer letter, and be totally cool and multilinguistically faaaar out. Voilá, buenos sueños. We are so kül, now.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) nvalbers 1/6/11 11:38 AM
NOTE that in CAPS different characters may appear; stay in lower case for the diacritical marks.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) nvalbers 1/6/11 11:39 AM
I mean when you hold your OPTIONS key, be in lower case. You could then switch to do like Ñ.  AHHHHHHH.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) vasco.roma 1/6/11 11:49 AM
My solution, which requires firefox, is to install EasyAccent (an add-on), which allows you to use the Word shortcuts anywhere within Firefox, including gmail.

Many thanks to Vasco roma - easily the best reply if you use firefox for your browser. Go to Firefox website and choose addons and then search for EasyAccent and download and install it. You can then use the normal Contol + facility to add accents.

Search for "ASCII Table" in Google images.  Alt + ASCII code works in Gmail.

I use Character Map Pro (http://www.5star-shareware.com/Windows/Desktop/FontTools/charmap-pro.html) It's freeware, and is what the Windows Character map should have been.Copy and insert any character, with accents, €, £ etc.

Thanks a lot exactly what I needed to make Gmail close to perfect.

You can also go to http://www.copypastecharacter.com, click the character you want (which copies it to the clipboard), go back to Gmail, and paste it in.  This works in the Plain Text editor or the Rich Text editor.  CopyPasteCharacter offers quite a variety of characters, including:

© Ω ½ ✔ ★ ☺ ✌ ♫

...among others.

Nusm,

Well done. Most user friendly. Makes Gmail even better.

Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) Symbols 3/23/11 1:52 PM
You can also put Google Translate on your Bookmarks Toolbar and open it up in another web window.  Simply copy and paste your Gmail message into Translate and convert to your language of choice. The symbols will appear automatically where needed.  Paste the translated message back into your Gmail.  It seems to work for everything but the up side down ! and ? marks at the start of Spanish question or exclamation sentence. You will need to do the more cumbersome copy and paste from Word Symbols to get those.

For Windows PC's, I have found <ALT>  codes to be helpful:  http://usefulshortcuts.com/alt-codes/accents-alt-codes.php.  In addition to working in email and Word documents, this also works in Windows Communicator.  i.e., <ALT> +0252 will give you a "u" with umlauts, or "ü".  (press the <ALT> key on your keyboard at the same time you type "0252".  Other codes for other letters are in the link.
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) ccss 4/21/11 2:36 PM
For Mac users:
2 ways I've found to do this -

(1) Others have mentioned using the Option key before, but it's worth writing out the common ones:

é (Option+e e) that is, hold down the Option key and the letter "e" together, then type another letter "e" alone.
è (Option+` e)
ô (Option+i o)
ç  (Option+c)

It might be worth your time to play around with combining the Option key and Option+Shift key with all the letters and numbers to see what you get:
¡™£¢∞§¶•ªº–≠
œ∑´®†¥¨ˆøπ“‘«
åß∂ƒ©˙∆˚¬…æ
Ω≈ç√∫˜µ≤≥÷
⁄€‹›fifl‡°·‚—±
Œ„´‰ˇÁ¨ˆØ∏”’»
ÅÍÎÏ˝ÓÔÒÚÆ
¸˛Ç◊ı˜Â¯˘¿

(2) Go to System Preferences > Languages & Text (top row) > Input Sources. Check the checkbox so that Keyboard and Character Viewer is "On." Now you will have a new icon at the top of your screen. Click on it, then click Show Character Viewer to pull up a whole lot of special characters and symbols to choose from.

Vasco.roma - BING! That's it for me. Just downloaded and installed the EasyAccent add-on for Firefox and it works flawlessly. Easiest of the suggestions here for this user.
Thanks
Re: How can I type symbols into my gmail? (umlauts, accents, etc.) nierret 5/12/11 7:02 AM
I just tried the Firefox add-on abvTajpu, and found it nearly as good as using the Ctrl, accent, letter sequence so convenient in MS programs.  As you key in your text, when you need a letter with a diacritical mark, simply hit Alt+F1, a drop-down box with all the usual combinations (and a few others) appears, you select the one you want with the cursor, and you go back to entering the text in G-mail.
