|messages being composed are "disappearing" when I hit "send". Anyone else?||tresbodlakeview||1/23/10 8:59 PM|
Does Gmail have a new bug, or does my laptop have a poltergeist??? Has the following happened to anyone else?:
Three times in the past two days. emails I am writing to OTHER PEOPLE (replies as well as new ones I'm composing) somehow turn into BLANK (no text on subj line or in body) messages that are emailed to ME when I hit "send" (note that I DO NOT have my own email address listed in the "to" "cc" or "bcc" lines).
In each case, the email addresses of the people who I was sending the message to (all g-mail users also, and people I email every day - no "new" email addresses) have vanished, and it appears that the message only got sent to my own email address.
Gmail is working properly in every other respect. I haven't changed anything in my OS, my other non-gmail email accounts work fine. I've scanned the entire computer twice with two different antivirus programs, there is no infection.
The only thing I've noticed in common with all three cases is that the email auto-saved to draft as I was writing it. Beyond that, it seems to occur at random.

Since I don't think Mozilla have reached v5.0 of Firefox yet, might I suggest you try an alternative browser (even IE7 or 8), or if you really meant v3.5.0 then update to the latest version of that browser (who have v3.6 in beta right now!).

I am also having disappearing issues when sending emails from gmail. Random emails I send, some new, some replies, appear in my sent folder but do not reach the destination. I've checked with a few intended recipients and they confirm that my email was not received at their end and is not in their spam folder. This seems to have been happening for at least a couple of weeks now, hard to tell because I do not get an "undeliverable" notice -- from my end everything appears to be sending normally. I am receiving all emails (i think?), but random ones are disappearing in the ether when i send them.
I have tried Gmail's troubleshooting steps, no help there. I haven't changed any settings recently, I have both my gmail and another non-gmail email account coming into and out of gmail. At first I thought it was the non-gmail server that was acting up, but testing this has proven that the mysteriously-disappearing sent emails happen from both email addresses only when I send from Gmail. When I send from my non-gmail server, it works.
I work predominantly on Mac O/S but i also use a P/C laptop (Windows XP Media). It doesn't seem to matter which O/S I am on, the sending just randomly doesn't work. On both computers I am on Firefox 3.5.7. I haven't tested this using another browser yet, that could be tough to track because of the randomness of the disappearances.
Hoping their is a simple solution to this, as it is getting really frustrating!!! Please tell me I don't have to go back to Outlook???

Yes, it is extremely frustrating, but it's a sad fact that some e-mail service providers don't always deliver messages to the intended mailbox; and worse still they can't be bothered to return a Cause code to Gmail to indicate that fact. Thus Gmail has no way of knowing your message hasn't been delivered.
Very often this is because, in a vain attempt to reduce the volume of spam, those service providers blacklist the Gmail smtp servers and then either refuse to accept the traffic from Gmail or just put it into a black hole.
It's not a function of either the webmail interface or the use of an e-mail client, but the use of Gmail's servers to handle the outgoing traffic.
So, going back to using Lookout won't help!
What you can do is have a secondary e-mail address which has no relationship to Gmail for such circumstances. And choose one that will allow you to send messages out through their smtp gateway (and which accept SSL connections to said smtp servers!).

Hmmmm...sounds logical...but..... this seems to be a new issue, i have been using Gmail for years now without a hiccup and this has just recently started happening. And sometimes the same recipient does receive, sometimes not so I don't understand why a service provider would let some in and some not.

oh and yes i do have a secondary email address, but when you say to use it under such circumstances, the problem is its such a random issue that it's impossible to know which "circumstances" i should use its smtp gateway. arrghhhh....
|Re: messages being composed are "disappearing" when I hit "send". Anyone else?||JohnW2||1/24/10 8:36 AM|
Then you can use your secondary address as a sort of confirmation that Gmail is truely sending your messages out.
If someone queries that it never arrived, well you have some sort of evidence that it's not your or Gmail's problem!!
I know it's not the perfect solution .... but I don't actually think one exists!!

The same thing started happening to me a few days ago. Then a friend in Germany who uses gmail said it also happened to him.
What I found was that when I used the "send" button at the bottom of my composed email, it would disappear, the recipient wouldn't get it, and my sent mail would show a blank email with no subject. But when I used the "send" button at the top of my composed email, everything worked just fine (knock wood).
This is perplexing.

@ mymarkx - may I just say how good it is to have a posting that actually helps detecting the issue along!
TTBOMK, you're the first one I've seen to point out the possibility of a different operation between the two buttons!
personally, I've only ever used the top 'Send' as I enter addresses last, just before I click on Send.

wow, that is a good tip that I will test. I separated the non-gmail email address out of gmail (deleted the fetch function) and that seems to have helped somewhat. But it is still happening occasionally so I am pleased to hear about a possible solution! Let's hope the fine folks at google hear this and get some QA testing and fixing done! thanks.

Occasionally experiencing the same problem here and it happens when I write some important mails :)
I am using FF 3.6. Addons that might affect:
- FireBug 1.5.0
- AdBlock Plus (mail also disappeared when it was disabled)

Please search your issue before you start a new discussion! Post here please. It is necessary to keep one discussion. http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=51cd56db6f35395b&hl=en

Having the same issue - mail disappears when I hit the Send button. An empty message sent to me is the result.
Very frustrating after spending an hour crafting a technical letter only to have it disappear. Any chance of regaining the autosaved versions??
I'm using FireFox 3.6 on a WinXP machine . Problem seems to have reared its head in the last few weeks. No other hardware or software changes in that time frame. It's a random event which makes it very hard to deduce what's goin' on.
How about a response from Google???? It's long overdue!

Haven't you realised yet? Because there's no Tech Support for users of Google's free services, the Google staff don't read your postings!!
That's why there's no responses.

I had a similar problem with a Draft disappearing. It was created on March 4th and updated/saved several times over the last two-plus weeks and it disappeared yesterday. Not in Drafts, not in Trash, not in All. I did use the Save Now button on the bottom of the Draft page but then, I think I always do. I'll keep an eye on that from now on though.

I had this problem of missing text from the sent message. when i changed my browser internet explores 8 beta to fire fox, my mails started working normally, that is i was able to see the messages in the sent mail. but all my old text message in the sent mail still not visible. i hope fire fox continue to work.
