It can't be done without using an add-on that interacts with gmail. You'd have to look through what's available for chrome and see if it's been written. I know that there is at least one written for Firefox.
And a personal opinion - don't do it. They are really annoying to receive - especially when large and flashy. PLUS - when they are received in Gmail the receiver has to click the "display image" option...which is also annoying when it's the same pic you've already seen a million times - and you still get stuck with the image option bar...because saying "never show images" means the receiver would wind up blocking all the pictures you send.

Nothing else worked for me except Vinnykaka response. This worked perfect every time. You have to remember never to delete the email that you sent to yourself with the pic that your linking to your sig. If you do the link will be lost and invalid.
The easiest method that is guaranteed to work is the following.
1.send an email to your gmail account attaching the image.
2.when viewing the email, you have a choice to view the image or download it. click view.
3. copy the URL from your web browser. e.g http://mail.google.com
4. in gmail, go to the settings link, which is on the top left of the page
5.scroll down to the signature box, click on the icon which lets you insert an image. it will then ask you to enter a web address (URL).
6. paste the URL from step 37. your image will now be in your signature.
8. bobs your uncle....enjoy!!!

Here is the easiest and best solution that worked for me: I sent myself an email with the image. I went to settings / signature andI copy/pasted the image in to the field. The image shows up perfectly.

1. Send yourself an email with the picture attached.
2. double click on the picture andwhen it opens, copy it (control C)
3. go into Settings on your email and scroll down to the signature box
4. If you want some text, such as your name, before the picture, type that in first
5. paste the picture (control V) - if the picture size is wrong, right click and you will have an option to make it smaller or larger.
6. Scroll to bottom of page and SAVE.
Job done! Only took me half a day to work it out. Shame on you google for not helping your customers directly nor for making this a basic add-on.
