HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? Phil P 4/27/09 11:31 AM
GOOGLE tells us they are the leader of all Internet.  So why is it, the default for G-mail auto sends a copy of all sent mail to my inbox?

Especially in light of having a sent mail folder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Further, as with most Internet issues, it's not clear how to make this change.  I see alot of Blackberry or Iphone but how do you simply turn this "wonderful" piece of crap worthless feature off?

It shouldn't be on to begin with.  This is equvalent to having a car made by Google and everytime you touch the door handle, the car starts.

Now trying to set up a filter.  Now why am I having to set up a filter; remember, GOOGLE is the leading/cutting edge of internet but for what-ever reason, as I stated in my first question, every sent message is delivered to my inbox.  Additionally, remember we all have a sent items folder.....

1:  Log into G-mail:  goto settings:  Create new filter

From:

To: (I put my g-mail address here)

Subject:

Choose action - Now, select the action you'd like to take on messages that match the criteria you specified.
When a message arrives that matches the search: to:(MY G-MAIL ADDRESS), do the following:

Skip the Inbox (Archive it)
Mark as read
Star it
Apply the label: Choose label...New label...-----
Forward it to:
Delete it
Never send it to Spam

Read this carefully, this filter is for INCOMING e-mail.  So if I set up this filter, it's going to affect --> INCOMING <-- mail.

So how do you stop Google from sending a copy of every mail you send to your inbox?  That is what the SENT FOLDER is for.

If this is not an easy solution, far too many e-mail providers out there to be screwing with this any longer.

I'd like to hear the answer as I have the same problem.  All of a sudden every time I send an email via Outlook, I receive a copy as a new email in my inbox.  It shows that it was sent by my Gmail account and addressed back to me.  This never, ever happened before and just started a few days ago.  What's going on????
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? bkennelly 4/27/09 4:39 PM
If you are getting sent messages in your Gmail Inbox (in the browser), then you probably have a filter set up with "Never send to spam" matching your outgoing messages.

If the problem only occurs in a POP client's Inbox, there is little you can do, other than creating a filter in the client.

Note: until recently, mail sent from an external client (via SMTP) was not downloaded through POP, unless you used 'recent mode'.  In the last week or so, these messages began to be downloaded.  It is most likely a bug, because there was no announcement of the change.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? bkennelly 4/27/09 6:58 PM
Google does not put all sent mail in the Inbox normally.

If you are not using a POP client or mobile device to read your mail, I only know three things that will put sent mail in the Inbox

1. If it is part of a conversation in the Inbox, it will be grouped with the rest of the conversation
I am assuming that this is not your problem.
2. You send it to one of your custom From addresses ("Send mail as").
Anything you send to one of your identities appears in the Inbox automatically.
3. You have a filter that matches, and applies "Never send to spam"

Have you disabled all "Never send to spam" filters?
Are you testing with an address that is not one of your From addresses?

Please report fix when found to me also, in the meantime I am removing never send to spam
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? Kri 5/25/09 3:18 PM
I'm having this problem too.

The messages are not part of a conversation,
nor do I have a filter that matches, and applies "Never send to spam",
and I don't use any custom From addresses.

I do send mail via smtp.gmail.com, though (from Mail.app). The only setting that works is: Server port 25 (or 587 also works), Use SSL, Authentication: password. Plus I also have to supply my username (and password of course). This causes all sent messages to end up in my IN-box.

This is clearly not how I want it to be, but how can it be avoided?
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? bkennelly 5/25/09 3:35 PM
The three cases you discussed apply to seeing your Sent messages in the Inbox in the webmail view (in your browser).  If you are using a POP3 client, it is a different case [1].  Your only optionw there are to create a filter, in Mail.app, or to switch to IMAP access.

Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? Kri 5/25/09 3:46 PM
They do end up in the inbox of the webmail too. I'm fine with creating a filter in Mail.app for incoming messages, but I don't know how to get rid of sent messages in the webmail inbox.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? bkennelly 5/25/09 4:50 PM
Odd.  You wrote nor do I have a filter that matches, and applies "Never send to spam".  Do you have any filters with "Never send to spam?  (Maybe they match by accident?)

There was another recent report that messages sent through SMTP with only BCC addresses (no TO or CC) would end up in the Inbox.  Could that be your case, too?

Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? Kri 5/25/09 6:30 PM
I checked my filters, and none has "Never send to spam" checked (= not enabled).

I happens in normal emails: TO = "someone" (for example one of my other email adresses, at yahoo for instance) and FROM my Gmail adress. Usually no CC, and definately not only BCC.

I while ago I used to send my mail via my ISP's smtp server, and then this didn't happen. Recently my ISP stopped supporting Gmail adresses through their smtp servers (don't ask me why) and then this problem started.

A agree that this is odd.

Thanks for trying to help! I appreciate it! :)

This is a terrible problem that only recently started without any input from me.  I surely hope someone finds a solution or gmail is not for me.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? sundancv 5/26/09 9:10 AM
As a follow-up, does anyone know what changes GMail made to the system to cause this to suddenly become a problem when it has not previously.  I do not understand the discussion of a need for "filters" if it was not needed 30 days ago or even two weeks ago.  Does anyone know how to obtain technical assistance to truly address this problem that arrived on its own.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? Kri 5/31/09 11:15 AM
Has enyone reported this issue (or issues) to the Google support team? I would, but i have trouble finding an appropriate address to send a bug report to.

No one?
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? bkennelly 6/4/09 1:35 PM
Kri,

You seem to be the only one with your symptoms.  As I wrote before, there are only three known reasons for sent messages to appear in the webmail Inbox.  Are you sure none of them apply?

Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? abern01 6/4/09 1:53 PM
This problem is recent and I reported it earlier (April), but no one at Google responds or corrects the problem.  I use Windows XP SP3 and Outlook 2003 as my mail client.  For years, my gmail e-mails worked flawlessly both in and outbound.
Lately, whenever I send emails to my sales team and enter names in the BCC field, a minute later I receive a new email in my gmail and Outlook inbox.  My new email is the exact same one I just sent to the sales team.  My name address, etc is not entered in any field.  As a test, I entered one name (not mine) in the BCC field.  Nothing is entered in the TO, CC or SUBJECT field.  There is no text in the body of the email.  I click "SEND" and a few seconds later, it comes back to me...addressed to me from me.

1. This isn't part of a conversation in the INBOX.
2. It is NOT sent "to one of your custom From addresses ("Send mail as").
3. I don't use any filters at all...never have.

This is not an issue with the users, but rather with Google / Gmail.  As I mentioned earlier, Gmail started doing this recently and I wish they'd un-do it.  It's really irritating!
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? Kri 6/4/09 1:59 PM
bkennelly,

I'm sure none of the 3 apply in my case.

Is it in any way possible to find an address to send a bug report to? I certainly can't find any.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? bkennelly 6/4/09 2:02 PM
abern01,

You are right, I had forgotten this new behaviour.  In some cases, messages with BCC only will appear in the Inbox.  But, Kri ruled that one out, too.

I am having the same issue.  Any email I send, a copy ends up back in my inbox.  So annoying.  It has only started recently in the last month and I have not made any changes how I access my gmail.  Happens only when sending email from browser, not my iphoneHelp!

Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? bkennelly 6/15/09 3:51 PM
A new cause has emerged.  At least recently, messages sent from the iGoogle gadget are put in the Inbox.  If you are using that gadget, try using full Gmail, to see if it helps.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? mgmixer 6/15/09 7:45 PM
You're right bkennelly 6:51 pm, it only does it in the iGoogle gadget. Full Gmail works fine for me.

I'm using Firefox browser, no labs, no fetches, no downloads, nothing but Gmail.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? dalaketh 6/15/09 8:01 PM
I was having this issue too. At first I was just sending a regular email to one person through the igoogle gmail gadget and it would show up in my inbox. I didn't think anything of it until I started sending a few more emails and every single one showed up in my inbox. I did as suggested and used regular gmail but I was still getting them in my inbox. I then remembered I had set up POP access a long time ago when my internet was not steady but since then I have not needed it and have not used it. When I went into my settings and turned off my POP access I had no problems with my webmail. I have sent about a dozen test emails since then and none of them have showed up in my inbox after turning off POP. My suggestion if you are not using POP access but still have it turned on for some reason then shut it off. If you also use POP access along with webmail with similiar symptoms as I had then hopefully the issue will be recognized and addressed by Google support. Anyway figured i'd add my two cents.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? dalaketh 6/15/09 8:04 PM
Update to my last post. When I shut the POP access off it fixed the issue for sending in regular Gmail but I am still having issue with the Gmail gadget with igoogle. Does anyone know if there is an updated version or another version of this gadget?
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? kkreuser 6/16/09 4:50 AM
I'm having the same problem.  I have a macbook.  When I'm in full gmail if I use the old version of gmail the problem does not occur.  I have no filters or any of the other 3 reasons listed above.  I new messages I send to my friends show up as incoming mail.  If I use the old version there's no problem, but you can't use that version if you are emailing through igoogle.
Talk about obnoxious.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? kiridearie 6/16/09 5:44 AM
i also have no filters, nor have i ever created a filter or even gone into my gmail settings page.  this randomly started happening to me last week.  if this is a bug, please fix it google!!!  it's driving me insane.
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? bkennelly 6/16/09 7:40 AM
kkreuser,
When I'm in full gmail if I use the old version of gmail the problem does not occur.
Does it occur in full Gmail with the newer version?

Change the iGoogle settings to open full Gmail, to avoid the problem there.  (Choose Open emails in full Gmail under Edit Settings in iGoogle.)
Re: HOW DO I TURN OFF G-MAIL SENDING ME COPIES OF ALL SENT MAIL? hershjoy 6/16/09 8:23 AM
I've been having the same problem. POP is disabled, no such spam filters, and even if I reply to a message using full Gmail, it bounces back to the Inbox. Worse, only about half of my replies seem to be actually getting out, but I have no way of knowing. So far it seems if I compose a new email it works.
Possibly relevant--I had a spam this month seemingly from someone I correspond with regularly, supposedly having posted pictures. It sat in my Inbox for a week before I opened it, got suspicious and deleted. That same day this all began, but it affected messages sent as far back as June 2.

It's happening to me as well in both gadget and full Gmail. It just started a day or two ago without any changes to settings, POP etc.

I also have this problem but it seems google only supplies this forum for people to let of steam and does not read it themselves to sort out problems or give any real assistance. This forum is a waste of time.

Same problem here.  I am using Mac mail with my Gmail accounts set up in it.  Every time I send an email, I end up with a copy of it in my inboxes.  Trying to find a solution.

What gets me is the amount of people that seem to give you a solution to a totally different problem!!!
