suspicious text messages and calls with verification codes GJC83 12/27/10 12:50 PM
This morning, I received a text message from 949-208-5945 stating "Your Google verification code is _ _ _ _ _ _"  It was followed up with a call from 650-353-9140 immediately saying "Your verification code is _ _ _ _ _ _" with no type of identification regarding what service this was from.  About 10-15 minutes later another text message from 626-831-9876 again stating "Your Google verification code is _ _ _ _ _ _."

I've checked all my google accounts (that I'm aware of) that are possibly linked to my phone and it doesn't appear as though anything is suspicious.  Can anyone help me out with trying to figure out what is going on and I should be really concerned?

Operating system: Mac OS - Snow Leopard
Program and version you use to access Gmail: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer

It sounds like someone is trying to use the Account Recovery form (ARF) to gain access to your account, but it sounds like there your phone number is on the account so that you can be notified by call or text message if someone is trying to reset your password.

Use the following knol to re-secure your account, and then post back here if it continues.

You must have made a new account on gmail or somebody made one and put your number down to get the verification code. You can get one either by getting it phoned to you or by text.

I made one the other day and got it by phone.

Hope this makes it clearer

You can check under Google Account settings whether you have actually provided Google with this number for sending verification codes.

If yes, then it is possible that someone is trying to gain access to your account. It could be though, that someone simply misspelled his/her email address as yours in the login form.

Otherwise, someone might have misspelled his/her phone number and you're getting this messages by mistake.

Please let me know if you keep getting these text messages.

The following post explains why we're asking for your phone number.

I got a call last night at dinner.  Then 4 texts today...

Hope it stops, kind of annoying.  All 4 within an hour...

Me too! I guess it's because I have a VERY common name. I was one of the first to have a gmail account (back in the day) - and I suppose everyone is wanting my email address...so they are trying to gain access!? Wish there was some way to stop it. I just received 3 txts today in the mater of 30 seconds. ANNOYING!

Just received multiple text msgs within 15 minutes with the same bs. A phone number and "Your Google verification code is ...". This is clearly not random, not a mistake but a directed effort to what end I don't know but it is certainly not benign.
Google: What is this about?!

I cannot find anything in my GMail settings where I have left my phone number for Google to text. Where would I find this setting?

I changed my passwords and this has appeared to resolve the neverending txts and calls...but google....what IS this about?
