Unable to Sync Contacts on Droid.  Get the following error "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly."  That was 10 days ago.  Have tried the "soft" (battery out) boot as well as the *228 thing.  Still get error message.

Always include:

Device: Droid
Carrier: Verizon

Android 2.0.1

Same issue here...saw rumors posted this was an issue with contact's pics syncing.  But, was not the case for me.  I removed all of my conts's pics and sync issue remained

Hi,

Had a search around and found a solution that worked for me (p.s. posted by someone else in another forum)

Go to "Settings".  Select "Applications".
Select "Manage Applications".
Scroll down to "Contacts Storage"
Click on "Clear Data"

Go back to to "Settings" again and in "Data Synchronization"
resync by pressing "Synchronize Now"

Good Luck

I found Johninho's solution worked for me
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. deniseastokes 3/19/10 5:11 AM
I tried this but you failed to say that if you do this ALL YOUR CONTACTS WILL BE LOST. Most new contacts I had were in my phone NOT on gmail contacts - so I lost valuable data. Thanks for trying to help - but a range of uers look for answers online. Some app savvy, some not. Guess I had to lose my contacts to find I was not android app savvy.

Really sorry my post caused you to lose your contacts.

You're right I should have pointed out that this solution deletes the contacts on the phone and forces "sync" to download the contacts from the web app onto the phone.

Anyone else trying should make sure they manually (if necessary) create or update the contacts on the web app before continuing.

Sorry again.

Regards

Thanks for the info Johninho.  I made sure all my contacts were on Google first, through manual entry, then wiped out my contacts and sync is now working great.  It hadn't been working in nearly a month, so good to have things back in working order.
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. susieq29 5/14/10 8:49 PM
I tried this and it worked. Then i tried changing something on my phone and it did not work again? I am getting real tired of this it. I have defaulted my droid incredible 3 times then I found this solution and I thought OK. I have also been saving my contacts as I go so I do have them saved both on phone sd card and flash drive.  If you know why this keeps happening please let me know

I found this site, which appears very helpful and goes over known issues within the Google contacts application (many facets) .

I was having the same problem.  Mine only started syncing after I signed up for "Market".  Don't know if this will help anyone else, but it was easy to do, so might be worth a try.  If this is really the fix, it seems a bit sneaky on their part....
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. jefkei92 8/25/10 12:14 PM
If you want to use this approach, you can use the free verizon backup assistant to backup everything first that you may have added to your phone, then once you re-sync the google account, then resync the backup assistant.

I am trying to get my phone contacts to sync to my gmail account. They are not in gmail and the Gmail will not sync. What can I do?
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. harryhar 8/31/10 4:21 AM

I had the same problem. "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly".

I found out that on the Web interface of Gmail that the contacts had a group named : System group : Family. Since I didn't used this group, and the group was not available in my Desire's contacts groups I removed this System group from the Web interface.

All is working fine now. :)

I'm having this with my Google Apps login.  Suddenly seems to not recognize the un/pw combo (which work fine elsewhere.)

This is an absolutely ridiculous problem to be having with no help from google evident anywhere.  You never no and can have no confidence that contacts are being synced to the google account associated.  It works and stops working depending on the phase of the moon....  Ticked off.

Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. scooby-doo 10/30/10 11:51 AM
Hi All,

Hope my experience may help some of you...

I recently got a HTC Desire HD. I'd sync'd successfully but then decided to delete both the gmail versions and the contacts in my phone (google contacts)... I won't go into why as it's embarrassingly stupid! I previously backed up my contacts to SD card so I knew I had them all there anyway. Sync stopped working once I restored my contacts on  my phone. So I took Johninho's advice above (thanks mate!) and cleared out the contacts storage when I found it! On the Desire HD it's located under Apps - Manage Apps - All - Contacts Storage.

Then just sync'd it and it's all good now!
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. johnalan2 11/4/10 9:00 AM
I ended up having to change my password on my default Gmail account assigned to the phone.  Reset phone, entered new pw and everything is back to normal.
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. Ville_Fin 11/6/10 1:33 AM
Hi all,

I have the same problem with HTC Desire 2.2 Stock Rom. I recently got it back from repairs and now try to sync contacts back from gmail. I manage to sync contacts that do not have a picture set in gmail. All the contacts with pictures in gmail do not sync.

I have not tried exporting .csv files from gmail and then importing it back. I believe this should solve the problem since the pictures will be destroyed in such a operation.

I tried the "popular answer" with clearing data on phone, but did not have any luck.

Yet another annoying bug from Google. Does anyone have a solution to sync contacts and keep the pictures?
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. austinjewel 11/12/10 11:41 AM
I have this problem with the calendar only - the contacts and gmail sync jsut fine.  I tried Johninho's approach and looked in that menu but saw nothing about either Contacts OR Calendar there.  (I am SO frustrated, as I've already found out that Google Sync doesn't work well for Outlook to Google Calendar either - it only syncs random events and leaves many off. ) Anyone have a fix for Google Calendar to Android (Samsung Epic) sync problem?
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. austinjewel 11/12/10 12:06 PM
my phone is pretty new (got it yesterday), so i resolved it by setting hte phone back to factory settings.  however, this will not be an effective solution going forward. i had already done work on setting it up that i will need to re-do.
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. Zielun 11/13/10 5:49 AM
I also had the same problem in HTC Desire HD with Android 2.2.
Solution suggested by Johninho worked for me too.
I cleared all contacts and resync them again with google contacts and since then I've had no problems.
However it`s always worth to backup data on SD card or elsewhere before you start erasing it.
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. nottosavy 11/13/10 8:34 AM
Wishing I would have read all the way through this forum before I proceeded with Johninho's suggestion!!!! lost many contacts; even if the sync works... I will never get back what I lost... big lesson learned!
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. JHightower 11/16/10 1:32 PM
My local computer tech came in and looked this problem over....where my calendar, contact, and gmail were NOT syncing anymore.   I had recently change my gmail password.  I knew this.  I had already updated my gmail account setup on my phone to know about the new password.   I told this to my computer guy.  He looked it over...and initially he was unable to get it to work.  He went through all of the setups I've seen in these forums....clearing out data and cache, etc.   He did everything EXCEPT factory my phone.  He finally found the answer.  In SETTINGS ==> Applications ==> Manage Applications ==> Gmail.....after clearing the data he hit the "Manage Space" button.  This caused another windows to pop up that said that the password associated with the gmail account on the phone was not the correct password anymore....and it gave him the opportunity to punch in the new one.  He did so.  Now my sync is working fine.   Now...he admits...that he does NOT know if clearing the data in the contacts, calendar, and gmail apps was really necessary, or not.  If this ever happens to me again...I'll be trying the Manage Space button before I do anything else...but....it may be that you also have to clear the app data for the app that you are trying to gmail sync along with the manage space button....
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. tnek 12/16/10 6:13 AM
interesting discovery.
originally contacts storage was 64 megabytes.
after clearing contacts storage and re synchronizing it was 16 megabytes
I believe that google mobile contacts needs a  reindexing  or a pack and  rebuild feature

used on HTC Desire HD when showing stopped syncing icon.
***try before clearing/deleting anything!!!******

**where possible have an alternative backup of your Contacts ie export to SIM first:
1) BACKUP
   >>Settings>>People>>
         select 'menu'
   >>Import/Export>>Export to SD card>>
select SIM or where ever your contacts are stored

2) try stopping the <<Contacts Sync Adapter>> under:
    >>Settings>>Applications>>Manage applications
          select 'All'
   >>Contacts Sync Adapter
         select 'Force stop'

then
go back and check 'Sync Contacts' under:
   >>Settings>>Accounts & Sync>>Google>>Sync Contacts

if not already syncing
select 'Sync now'

on checking the >>Contacts Sync Adapter it should show 'Force stop' re highlighted.
and your Contacts updated in Googlemail.

Good Luck

I am also having this issue. I have Sprint service and The Samsung Transform phone. I don't have the option to clear the data from my contacts, only to remove the entire widget, and I don't think I want to do that without more info first.
Any Ideas?
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. Wager 1/12/11 10:48 AM
RDKrueger: I also have a Samsung Transform, and also have this problem. You can clear your data by going to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Menu -> Filter -> All -> Contacts Storage -> Clear Data ... But it doesn't help (at least not me).  I had to reset to factory default, and that made the error message go away for about 12 hours. It worked after this (at least the contacts were syncing) but it still gave the, "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly," error.

I DID finally fix it, though.  I had to go into Google Contacts online, and Edit and re-save all my contacts. While doing this, I deleted all line-breaks in my addresses and hit enter on them again.  This was because all of my contacts on my Android had the address showing up twice, once with funny characters before the line-breaks, and once without.

After re-saving ALL my contacts with new line-breaks in the addresses, the error completely went away.

Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. UniqueDave 1/17/11 7:04 PM
Had the error occur in the OPs subject title.

Problem for me was that I was using a field in my gmail contacts which Android 2.1 clearly didn't like when trying to sync contacts. The field was "custom", as soon as I removed the field (and used "notes" instead), worked fine.

cheers
Dave
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. UniqueDave 1/17/11 7:05 PM
Oh yeah also, the error message is clearly wrong, its not a connection or server-side issue as it implies. Poor exception handling.

Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. agenttuttle 3/2/11 1:18 PM
Hi there.  I had the same problem myself recently on a HTC Wildfire.  the phone had been syncing fine, then stopped mid January.  I checked out the various forums, and tried many of the above fix's, but to no avail.
So I decided to contact HTC's customer support, and got a reply within 2 days from a very helpful chap.
First he suggested a "soft reset" as follows-

The issue may not be with the device and might be with googles client. It might be worth also getting in touch with Google's customer support to see if they are able to offer assistance from there end as well.

The problem might be software and may be resolved by doing a simple soft reset.

"To do this, remove the battery from the device while it is turned on and wait for 10 seconds before booting up again.

This fools the operating system into thinking that it has gone through an unexpected shut down and when it boots up again it will run a disk check to search through all its files for any irregularities and amend them."

Unfortunately this did not do the trick, so back to the helpful chap at HTC, his reply as follows

"I am sorry that the soft reset has not resolved this issue and I hope that my next fix will.

What I intend to do is restore the devices operating system to an earlier point, much like you would do with your computers operating system when that runs into system errors.

The only problem with this is that it is going to erase all information on the device as it will restore the operating system to when it was first released from the factory, otherwise known as a factory data reset.

To ensure that you do not lose any of your contacts, music, pictures and videos you can remove the SIM card and SD card from the device before doing the factory data reset.

To ensure that you have all your contacts saved to your SD Card, please follow the steps below;

From the home screen go to the applications screen
Contacts
Menu
Import/Export
Export to SD Card.

This will now transfer all your contacts over to the SD Card.

Now power down the device and remove the SD Card and SIM card and then you will be ready to do the factory data reset.

To do the factory data reset, please follow the steps below;

From the home screen press menu
Settings
SD & Phone Storage
Factory Data Reset.

Wait until your device boots up and takes you to the set up screen again, then you will be able to power down the device and reinsert your SD card and SIM card."

**************************IT WORKED******************************

Be warned, this will wipe all the data off your phone, contacts and apps and personal settings included, so make sure you sync these to your PC, or be prepared to download them again, or reset up your phone as if it was new.

I also asked if I should avoid future updates etc, they said yes if I thought the update had caused the problem, but I am on the latest version of android, so this does not seem the cause.

thanks to the chap from HTC support, maybe everyone should contact their phone manufacturers support department, I am sure that if they get enough problem emails, they will have a bit more clout with android/google than us individuals.

Good Luck all

Thank you to AgentTuttle.  Doing a hard reset solved my syncing calender problems(pun intended).  The My Touch 4G (I don't know the HTC name for it) is new and this is the initial setup so doing a hard reset wasn't a huge issue. I'd like to know why it happened so that if it happens in the future, with more info on the phone at stake, I can fix it without such drastic measures.

Johnino - where is "data synchronization" in settings? i cleared my data and then can't find the data sync menu
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. steve nurse 4/3/11 12:09 AM

I HAVE FIGURED IT OUT> AT LEAST FOR MY VIRGIN MOBILE ANDROD  LG OPTIMUS V.

it's got to be the same for all Androids though is my guess. The thing to understand is Android looks at the gmail account as being two separate accounts. one is the one you get to from your menu the other is the one in the sync area. If you change your password (like I did) don't assume that if you change it in the menu area the information will be transferred over to the sync area. You have to delete the account from the sync area and reinstall it using the correct password. You’d think they would talk to each other but the two apps are separate. Unfortunately you can't uninstall the gmail account from the sync area without resetting back to factory settings. Which in my case means I have to spend another lifetime reloading skype - oh well I am a new user so I could have lost far more applications. In my case the message should have said " trouble with getting to your gmail account please reinstall"..  I hope this helps folks

Does anyone with a galaxy indulge have or fixed this issue? Seems all the info on the net is for other phones and I can not fix it with the indulge. I feel the resetting of phone data will do the job but syncing does not out weight resetting all settings for me. I have no interest in doing that.

I would think a simple bat script could fix the issue via debug mode but have not seen that mentioned.

Cause: For me the cause was deleting all my contacts in hopping I could resync. Well turns out deleting all contacts causes this very problem.

Fix: Somewhere in this phone is bad or corrupt data that I simply need to remove, but where?

Ok turns out the syc is actually working. If I make a change on google the phone picks it up. Would be nice to remove the sync nag errors.

If I do the following on my phone (HTC Desire HD):

Go to "Settings".  Select "Applications".
Select "Manage Applications".
Scroll down to "Contacts Storage"
Click on "Clear Data"

Does it clear my SIM card too?

I tried every suggest that I could find here and elsewhere when I found that my Eris couldn't sync anything after changing my password.  However, nothing seemed to make a difference.

After reading an article about a new iPhone app, I decided to try the Google Market on a whim to see if that worked.  When it first came up, it told me that my password was incorrect.  I entered my new password and then Gmail, Latitude & other apps that couldn't connect before magically started working.

WARNING!!!

My HTC Desire HD would not Sync with Facebook for HTC Sense - and still won't.

I sync'd with gmail before I tried Johninho's suggestion, but now my contacts are REALLY messed up. It really is a stupid, STUPID idea to suggest clear your message cache, when your phone won't sync, because if you do that and the problem has nothing to do with a corrupt cache and doesn't resolve, you are left with nothing, and no way of restoring, besides manually re-entering your contacts.

I was incredibly idiotic to follow that suggestion. Beware that there is a real risk when you clear your cache that you will lose all the contact data you have in the phone permanently - or at least until you find the real cause of your sync issue, which I still have not.

A slightly different approach worked for me when my phone had the up to date list:

Back up the gmail contacts
Delete all gmail contacts
Synchronise

Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. insx 6/14/11 5:32 AM
Another thing to check - make sure you don't have a contact named "Unknown".
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. Bluebeard140 6/29/11 7:02 AM
My HTC Desire wouldn't sync contacts after I deleted all of my phone contacts in an effort to only display 1 set of numbers when messaging. (Unfortunately both my phone and google contacts disappeared.) Sync then started to come back with the "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly."  the error continued for 24 hrs until
I followed the steps posted by Bigday above and it fixed the problem instantly. .
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. Stemadsen 6/29/11 3:45 PM
Okay, first I deleted all my Google contacts from my Desire S so that I only had the phone contacts left (unlinking all contacts, copying missing data from Google contacts to phone contacts and deleting the Google contacts takes A LOT of time).
Then I deleted all my Google contacts in my Gmail account on my pc (first making sure that I didn't have anyone there that I needed).
Then I exported my phone contacts as a .vcf file and imported them into my Gmail account.
I then tried to sync my Gmail contacts with my phone - and it worked!

BUT it messed up the phone numbers: It added a hyphen after every three digits which is very annoying, especially since I live in Denmark where the numbers aren't split up like that. So now I have to start from the beginning - unlink, delete Google contacts ... I think I will just manually "sync" my contacts from now on.
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. Jandroid_4 7/21/11 3:33 PM
Just had this problem and found a way to do it without losing all your contacts.

If you go to settings>acounts and sync>facebook for htc sense then tap remove account.

After you have removed the account just go back to accounts and sync and sign in to your facebook and everything should be fine.

Hope this helps.
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. NoSloppy 7/23/11 10:23 AM
The following is a detailed, longwinded way of saying BACKUP, DELETE, RESYNC.

First, understand that you have 2 sets of contacts, Google contacts, and phone contacts.
Phone contacts are your old school phonebook on the device itself and is what Verizon Backup Assistant works with.
Backup Assistant, if you don't know, is a free contacts backup service provided by Verizon. All you need to do is have an active online Verizon account, register you phone on the Backup Assistant page and schedule daily sync, usually overnight.

Ideally, to avoid any future confusion/duplication, you should move all of those Phone Contacts to Google Contacts by exporting them, then importing to Google, and eventually empty the onboard phone contacts. That's a separate topic you can search.
For now, make sure you have those Phone contacts backed up either to Backup Assistant online (see above,) or to SD card by going to People, menu, import/export, and choose Phone. Make note of the filename they're exported to.

For now, just to get Google Contacts sync working again, follow these steps:

WARNING!!!! This WILL erase all of your "phone contacts" from your phone (not Google Contacts.) Make sure you have those phone contacts backed up.
go to settings > applications > manage applications, choose the "all" tab

choose Contacts Storage, and then press "clear data".

Go back to home>settings>Accounts & Sync>Google account and choose "sync now"
You should see the sync icon spin for all the checked options, and the date next to "Sync Contacts" should update to the current date/time when it finishes.
Congrats, you're synced up and adding or removing Google contacts either on the phone or via google web interface should continue to stay in sync.

If you want to bring the Phone Contacts back to your phone for now until you turn them into Google Contacts, depending on where you backed the contacts up to, either:

SD Card: Open People, press menu, import, choose the file name you made when you backed up.
Backup Assistant: press menu, settings, Accounts & Sync, Backup Assistant, choose "sync now.""

My contacts are syncing fine *knock wood* on my Droid Incredible 2 but my calendar has the perpetual "Sync is currently experiencing..." message and none of my calendars are working in the default calendar program. I am not sure whether HTC or Google made the Google Calendar program/widgets that came with the phone but I can't find an official Google Calendar app in the market. I did try clearing the data from the settings but it hasn't fixed the problem.

Just so you all know, there is an even easier way to fix the duplicate contacts. Just go into your gmail account on a computer, click contacts, and at the top right you can click the box that says more - under it will be an option to Find & Merge Duplicates.... Click it, and voila! You have 0 duplicate contacts.
Re: Sync is currently experiencing problems. it will be back shortly. vnssalopez 10/6/11 7:04 AM
You have to do all 3 of these in order for it  to work

Go to "Settings".  Select "Applications".
Select "Manage Applications".
Scroll down to "Contacts Storage"
Click on "Clear Data"

Go to "Settings".  Select "Applications".
Select "Manage Applications".
Scroll down to "Dialer Storage"
Click on "Clear Data"
Go to "Settings".  Select "Applications".
Select "Manage Applications".
Scroll down to "GMAIL storage"
Click on "Clear Data"

Go back to to "Settings" again and in "Data Synchronization"
resync by pressing "Synchronize Now"

Then Restart the phone...and you should get the icon showing sync matches and your email should be back.
If not - facotry reset the phone.

vnssalopez. that last suggestion was just fantastic. I signed up to here just to say thank you. I actually have multiple gmail accounts and one had jammed up freezing the others. Your method has cleared the jam. thanks again. I was worried that it would lose my account data and I would have to set up each account anew. But all was there and the autosync after switching off restored everything. Great

I just tried to sync my contacts after applying a backup and syncing those backed up contacts. I started getting the error and I went to Settings>Manage Applications>All>Contacts Storage and delete data. MAKE SURE YOUR CONTACTS ARE BAKED UP THROUGH YOUR GOOGLE ACCOUNT! They sync and all was fixed.

I tried lots of solutions, none of them were helpful. Finally I found out the problem was because of Market! So this solution fixed it:
Setting>>Applications>>Manage Apps>> All Apps>> I "cleared data" on market, Market feedback and market updater" (caution: I don't now whether you may lose your app history in Market!) then I cleared "Contacts Storage" (WARNING! YOU WILL LOSE YOUR PHONE CONTACTS! First make a backup)
After this Sync was OK!
Please let me now if this was helpful.
My Phone: Galaxy S2 , Android: 2.3.4

Have 2 accounts in gmail, one primary, both were working properly on a Samsung Galaxy GT-S5570, and then suddenly neither could sync properly and I couldn't access e-mail or Market. Turned off and on the sync settings in Settings>Accounts and Sync>[Account}>Contacts/Gmail/Picasa/Calendar for each of them, and the error message went away when Picasa was unchecked, but all the others were re-checked, however, both email accounts still wouldn't sync or update. Went though many of the online tips, and Google's suggestions, step by step, most didn't work either. http://support.google.com/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=113869

I logged in directly to the primary account on http://www.gmail.com via the phone's web browser.  Then the primary gmail email account worked and synced afterwards with the direct gmail app on the phone.

For the second account, I removed it  -- > Settings>Accounts and Sync>[Account}>REMOVE ACCOUNT (wasn't worried about losing contacts/settings/etc.) Then, tried to add the account again. But that wouldn't work until I did this:

Applications>Manage Application>Gmail>Clear Cache (Yes, clear cache). That allowed me to re-add the second gmail account and it synced and worked properly after going to the sync settings and checking all. I did not read this step anywhere as it seemed to me that clearing all data was a bit drastic and maybe just a cache clear could do it. I suspect somewhere I logged into a wifi somwhere that caused the sync problem in the first place and maybe a login cookie or two, who knows.

But, afterwards, Market worked as well.

One way to fix this in my case seems to remove the accounts, clear the cache, then re-install. WARNING WARNING WARNING... however, to those who may lose important data!!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps someone.

Tried the Johninho's method but it doesn't work.
Only time lost to resync my contacts and make links again for contacts aggregation :(

Yeah clearing storage contacts was not best idea. But, I went to settings, accounts sync and clicked on add account. Click on Facebook for HTC. Log out and back in. If you recently changed your password then this will work. My contacts and photos weren't uploading for weeks and now it works. This is weird considering I have changed my password many times and this never happened before but this time it caused issue

I ran into this problem first time this morning.  went through the forum and considered.  I use a Galaxy S.  Someone said about downloading an app.  I went to android market and had to sign in oddly enough.  When I signed in.  All syncing started up again.  This is a very happy ending for me, BEFORE I deleted contacts and calendar data.  thanks for all your input on this.  It helps to work together
