|How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||baz872005||7/30/09 10:18 AM|
I didn't enter my gmail account details when I first got my phone and like others I'm now having difficulties entering it and have read that I need to do a hard reset and start over again. Can somebody write out a step by step guide as to how I perform a hard reset.

According to the official helpdesk of HTC (for me in France), you had to:
1/ Switch off the phone (either removing the battery or shutting down by holding the "end call" button for few seconds
2/ While being switched off, hold the "home" (house) and "back" (the arrow in the lower right corner)
3/ Hit briefly the "end call" button" while still holding the "home" and "back" buttons.
4/ Release the "home" and "back" button, a white screen containing technical information should appear, with a red message asking for hitting the "menu" button.
5/ Hit the "menu button", the Hero will now boot with factory settings.
Factory settings means that every information stored on the ROM (NOT your SD memory card) will be cleared (for me it was just the address book which was instantly updated thanks to my Google account).

In simple word the is "WONDERFUL". I got a G2 phone two days ago and could not figure out how to sort this problem. I have been to T-mobile shop to no avail. I was even planning to call google next week. I just typed in the query and amazingly I got the answer and it worked wonderfuly well. I love G2 phone with a passion! Thanks GOOGLE for the phone. Iphone is just a waste of money mate!

Well, I have the same Google sync problem. I've read several forums and the solution is everywhere the same: do a factory reset. The only problem is that I will loose all of my contacts. Since I can't sync with Google it's impossible to back it up, or is it? Is there some other way to back up my contacts?
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||Dr Hotdog||9/23/09 1:19 AM|
If your aim is re-enter your Google Account details because of sync problems or simply because you want to change you account (i.e. switch from using a GMail.com account to a Google Apps for domains account) then there is in fact a way to do it without resorting to a full wipe/factory reset. I wrote about it on my (Google Sites...) webpage here: http://www.drhotdog.net/android-linux-and-google/changinggoogleaccountsettingsonanhtchero With this technique you won't lose all your other user data.
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||ocmer||9/23/09 2:40 AM|
I followed the instructions step-by-step as described on your website, but to no avail. For me it's the problem that it doesn't synchronise with Google. I have a excisting Gmail/Google account.
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||Dr Hotdog||9/23/09 4:53 PM|
Sorry to hear that it didn't help with your sync problem, ocmer, I guess something outside of the Google Apps data has gotten corrupted in your case. Not sure what it would be, obviously some part of your user data though as a full wipe/factory reset is reported to fix the problem.
My Google account reset method should work for the issue of not having entered (like the OP) or wanting to change account details though. In fact in the OP's case of not having entered any Google account details yet simply going to Settings > Data synchronization > Google should be enough to start the setup process, no need to wipe anything.
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||ocmer||9/24/09 1:19 AM|
Dr Hotdog, then I'm afraid I'll need to do a full factory reset. But do you know a way to backup my Contacts? Since I can't synchronize with Google and there's no Bluethooth on the HTC Hero I can't find a way to back it up.
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||Dr Hotdog||9/24/09 1:25 AM|
If you're a Windows user then there's the HTC Sync programme, that should enable you to backup your contacts (and other data) to a PC over the USB cable. I don't use Windows myself so have never tried it personally, and can't tell you much more about it I'm afraid.
I believe there are a number of backup related apps in the Android Market too, but I can't offer any specific suggestions.
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||ocmer||9/27/09 8:33 AM|
Thnx! I used HT Sync to backup my Contacts.
Another question regarding the hard reset, does this also mean that also your text messages will be gone as well?
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||Dr Hotdog||9/28/09 5:06 AM|
Yeah, a full wipe/factory reset would wipe all your text messages too. To backup those I think you'll have to check out one of the backup apps from the Android Market. I know there are some that specialise in text messages, but I haven't used any myself I'm afraid.

There is a app in the market called MyBackup that will back-up sms, bookmarks, call log etcetera.
This will suffice.

Here's the solution to unlock without losing your data:
Type you gmail username and in the password field type "null". You will then be prompted to enter a new pattern and your phone will be unlocked.
I just did this on my HTC, worked perfectly.
Source: Issue 3006 - android - Google credentials don't unlock phone after failing too many pattern attempts - Project Hosting on Google Code (comment 172)
I collected this information from Chrome for Open Source Software: A Little SQLite Goodness for Android (http://cfossguy.blogspot.com/2009/11/little-sqlite-goodness-for-android.html) and thanks to the one posted this solution.
Hope it helps many of our forum members.

During development of Android apps I've been testing on a HTC Hero and had to swap SIM cards a few times when using aboard which inevitably causes the loss of Google account settings.
The only way which has every worked for me to sort this out is the full factory reset. Clearing the data for Google Apps entry in the Manage applications does not work, although I wish it would as it would save me a lot of time and there are so many apps I just can't be bothered installing every time.
I've written an article about this here:
Most of the stuff I don't mind loosing but backing up my SMS is a must.
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||zand.2005||5/10/10 4:31 AM|
It worked for me too.
Thank you all

Does this work for just a Hero or for the T-Mobile G2 as well?

This thread is entirely dedicated to the htc HERO ----
it is NOT for the htc Vision aka tmobile G2.
As for Marsha -- you can bypass the google login if you wanted.... jesusfreke is the one who found that exploit
How to register the G1 without a sim or data plan
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||danteraines||1/29/11 8:09 PM|
Is there a way to do a factory reset for the TMobile G2? I didn't have my Google account when setting the phone up, and I'm completely locked out of the phone. What can I do, aside from having to go to the service provider?
|Re: How to hard reset HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2||yson||2/1/11 8:06 PM|
You can do a factory reset for the G2 following Menu>Settings>Privacy> Factory data reset.
For me, Factory data reset didn't work. I clicked unmount SD card then formated. Now it downloads apps again.
There might be corruptions when my G2 was writing or deleting something on SD.
My all apps are gone because I have done the factory reset.
Try format SD if the factory reset doesn't work for you. Don't forget to backup your data in SD.

how to hard reset your T-Mobile G2 smartphone. A hard reset will delete all data from the device and start you off with factory default settings.
1. Power off the phone. If the phone is unresponsive, pull the battery.
2. Press and hold the Volume Down button on the side of the phone while powering the phone back on.
3. When the menu appears, select Clear Storage by using the Volume buttons to change your selection. Press the Power button to choose the selection.
4. Press Volume Up for YES.
The G2 hard reset will then take a few moments to complete.
