What to do after failing age requirements when trying to sign your dog up on gmail? sclanton 2/28/10 9:02 PM
Explain your issue in full detail here:

This does not actually fit into any of the listed topics, but there is no way that I know to get direct support for gmail from google, so I will try to post it here.

I attempted to give my dog an email address, mainly so I could put it on his tag and have email to it forward to me in case he is ever lost.  He is currently four months old, and I attempted to sign him onto gmail as accurately as possible.  Not knowing the age requirements for signing up for an account, this has apparently flagged me as underage, and I can't create new gmail accounts.  I have cleared/reset my browser, so I guess gmail thinks that my IP is the computer of an underage person (even though multiple people here sign into gmail daily here).  I waited a day and tried to sign him up again (with my age [31]), but it still thought I was underage.  For a number of reasons, it is inconvenient for me to get a DHCP lease on a new IP.  What gives?  The age verification bit seems a bit much.  How can I un-underage myself?

Operating system (e.g. WinXP):  OSX
Program and version you use to access Gmail (e.g. Internet Explorer 7 or Outlook 2003):  Safari

I've heard that clearing your browser's cache can help.  You might also try another browser or another computer.

I'll point out that an account created only on the rare chance of a lost dog may not work very well.  Accounts are deleted after about 9 months of non-use, so you might find that just when you need it, it's no longer active.  You may be better off using your own e-mail address as at least the account will still be active should you need it.

I tried another browser and it worked!  thanks!

I cleared the cache (with reset of the browser) -- and did try another browser on the same machine.  I'm sure that another machine would work, but I'm just sort of surprised at the policy.

Thanks theSHIFT, that was helpful!

I accidently typed in the year 2010 instead of the actual birthdate like I should have and now I'm flagged too.  I was setting up a new gmail account for a valuable client of mine with a SPECIFIC user name that he requested.  Now I've found that I've wasted a tremendous amount of time today trying to remedy my simple mistake!

There's no "support help" for the error message I received which reads:

Google could not create your account

In order to have a Google Account, you must meet certain age requirements. To learn more about online child safety, visit the Federal Trade Commission's website.

I'm going to try another browser as suggested here, but really... what a ridiculous policy.  There's gotta be a better way!

Google I have been with you forever. I started a business venture and need a gmail with a specific name and made a mistake when entering the incorrect birth date and now I can't create an account? Are you serious? I mean really? As sophisticated as technology has become in 2010 we are are forced to deal with prehistoric automated error messages?
I guess in a way I am glad that this happened bc now I know there is NO SUPPORT and would not dare securing any other services that are offered by Google bc I may not have a remedy for my problem.

Thank you so much Google...U ROCK.
AND STOP STALING MY IP address. SMH!

neicyjordan, If you read the first reply to this thread you'd see some suggestions to get around the problem with your browser.  Of course it may be easier to blame Google for a browser caching problem, but if you want to fix the problem and move on you clearly can.

I have run into this problem several times with Firefox.  For me, clearing the cache has never worked.

I just tried from IE and it worked fine.

Ditto on DrStrangepork's reply. I kept getting the problem on Firefox.  After changing to an IE browser, and clearing the cache there it worked fine; seems to be something quirky with Firefox for me.

I have Firefox. To solve the problem I cleared my cache and history for the last hour. Then I restarted the session and all was fine.

If you still have trouble, try clearing cookies. Maybe restart the computer as well.

Thanks everyone. I'm using Firefox 3 and had the same problem, I tried clearing cache (Tools > Clear Recent History) to no avail. Then I tried clearing cache and deleting cookies. Bingo!
