"We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Chris.V 9/11/09 12:13 PM
Every couple days now I keep getting this error message when logging into my Gmail account. I'm sick of having to change my password for absolutley no reason.

I've checked the logs in the usage activity and it is all from me. There are no missing e-mails, or anything that would flag my account under suspicious activity.

Please tell me what to do to stop this. I want to use my password and not have to change it every couple days. This is so frustrating.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. stevehurl88 9/11/09 12:55 PM
I came here to report the same issue. Mine started yesterday, and I lost my 6 character password, and had to use an 8 character password. Which made me mad. That was one thing I appreciated, that I came to gmail before they boosted their character count. Because apparently I was in some danger with only 6 characters for a password. But then I tried checking email right now, and it wanted me to change it again. So I did. Then I had to figure out how to change it back...

Google, don't make me change my password because you think something is wrong, tell me WHY you suspect my account is in danger, and I can evaluate whether there is any real danger.

Make sure you follow all the steps below.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Chris.V 9/11/09 7:55 PM
Trust me, I've already looked over that.

Can someone from Google please tell me what to do to stop this from happening? If I have to randomly change my password every couple days, I'll have to switch to another mail service.

Absolutley ridiculous.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. yba 9/11/09 8:59 PM
It seems to be a general problem with gmail. It happens to me as well, starting yesterday. This is very annoying, as I'm pretty sure that it is a mistake. I am using gmail as my background email account for all the other accounts, and I also use it to store links to articles that I upload and keep at Google Docs. That way, gmail is my archive for articles (I work as a professor at a university), but the articles do not take as much space as they used to (got to 55% of my storage recently). What I do is perfectly legal, of course, and I don't see why gmail would suspect that anything is wrong.

Yes, it's happened to my girlfriend's account also. Yet she changes her password and the same thing appears instantly.

Listen Google, I want an answer.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. PhoenixSunrise 9/14/09 4:14 PM
Mine's moved beyond asking for a new password now (that started showing up within the last week), and they've now straight up locked my account.  They're requiring me to give them my cell # so they can send me a text for verification?

C'mon now, Google.  I don't know whether to think someone has hacked you guys and is now phishing, or whether you've recently gone through a big procedural overhaul or what.  But you should tell your consumers what's up and provide them better options than what you currently have available.  Whatever happened to the alternate email we registered with at account creation?  Send the verification there.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. ReaperBMW 9/14/09 5:37 PM
Same problem originally. Now I'm aksed for my cell #. Put that in, got sick of waiting for the message so left the page. 10 minutes later I get a verification code which I can no longer use. Brilliant.

I would like to know how, all of a sudden, after at least 3 years of problem-free use, google has managed to f*ck it up so badly. If I have to reset my password, or give them my cellphone one more time, it will be the last. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. RysheEben 9/14/09 5:57 PM
Phoenix again.  Can't access any part of my main account anymore, so forced to post with an alternate.  I finally did the text confirmation.  Twice.  Both times, I got the code immediately, typed it in, and was informed that Google was having problems with the verification process and that it didn't take.

Really guys?  Really?  How about some communication.  I can take a "we royally screwed the pooch" if that's what it's come down to.  What I can't take is leaving us in the dark.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. PhoenixSunrise 9/14/09 6:48 PM
And... as mysteriously as this locked up hours ago, it's working fine now.  Hrm.

Well I Had this problem, and I have changed my password...
After that it's was ok, but I forgoted my password, and I cant reset it :/
Lucky Chrome remembered password so I can accsess to my Gmai, but i don't know the password, and I can't use gmail from other computer.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Roget 9/15/09 3:42 PM
Have any of you given permission to another service to access your email?  I received this message for the first time a few days after I allowed Funambol to handle the email traffic between my phone and gmail.  Maybe it's just a coincidence since it has also happened to all of you.  I haven't changed my password on Funambol to match the new gmail.  I will leave it that way to see if it still complains about suspicious activity.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Michelle 9/15/09 5:34 PM
Hi everyone,

The error message you're seeing when you try to sign in to Gmail is a valid error message that indicates we've detected suspicious activity in your Google account. I understand it's frustrating to have to go through the reset process before getting into your mail, but it's part of our efforts to help prevent unauthorized access to your account.

For those of you seeing this message more than once, it's possible that your account is being repeatedly compromised. Typically, this occurs when a keylogger or other malware is installed on your computer. We strongly recommend scanning any computer you use to access Gmail for malware and updating your anti-virus software.

Additionally, if you enter your original password as your new password, you may trigger the error message. Create an entirely new password the next time you sign in.

For assistance with securing your account and choosing a good password, see the link Joshua posted, which I've posted again below.

Thanks,
Michelle
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Juglugs 9/16/09 9:59 AM
@Michelle It's odd that we've all had it starting to happen around 9/11.

Also, when filling in the forms to get my account reset (trying to remember when I sent my first email, etc.) I just get reply saying that there is not enough info. I don't have anymore info than that which I have supplied (for my girlfriend's account - luckily the first emails she sent were to me, so they are in my archive!)

She really doesn't want to have to create a new account...
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Juglugs 9/16/09 1:35 PM
@Michelle It also only appear to affect Gmail!!

She can see her Calendar, Photos (Picasa Web Albums) and even the Google Mail Notifier works by previewing her emails. She just can't access the gmail web browsing page....
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Chris.V 9/16/09 10:01 PM
I'm on a mac, I've used multiple virus scanners and don't come back with any virus's. I don't check my Gmail on any other of my computers. This continues to happen every couple of days and i'm now switching to another e-mail service.

Absolutley fucking ridiculous Google. Tell me HOW my account is being comprimised, or GTFO of my business. I don't want you monitiring my accounts security, I can do that all by myself.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Ailanto 9/17/09 5:30 AM
It's been happening to me too, just started this week. According to the Last Activity info, the only accesses have been mine (I've checked each time I had trouble logging in or received this email). It would be helpful if the warning gave some indication of the kind of suspicious activity.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Ailanto 9/17/09 5:32 AM
Oh, by the way... the trouble I had logging in... *maybe* I entered the password incorrectly, though I doubt it. But, and this is what was odd, gmail immediately did the captcha thing instead of just telling me the password was wrong and letting me retry.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. yba 9/17/09 5:46 AM
It happened to me only once, on last Friday, I think. I thought that it must be something with the fact that I use four different computers, one of them in a different continent via remote desktop connection. I'm guessing that it's not a keylogger, but it's difficult to know with so many computers. What happened to me was that my account became inaccessible for a few minutes, and only then it asked me for a new password.

I agree with the rest that google should be much less bossy about it. If you detect a problem, let me know and I'll decide how to deal with it. It is difficult to be so big and influential without becoming Microsoft/Apple, but if you become them you will lose what's making you so successful.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Ailanto 9/17/09 6:23 AM
I regularly access gmail from two computers (home and work) (occasionally others but rarely)... Maybe google has become suspicious of access from multiple and apparently unrelated IP addresses?
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. vortodox 9/17/09 6:25 AM
I have fixed my problem.
I remembered my odl password. After that I have added my phone number on which google can send me code, and now i have no problems at all.
Not on my computer or on any other.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. tughillwest 9/17/09 9:03 AM
Shocking so many people are having "security issues".

Copy / pasting form letters and links is not customer service. I have NO virus. I check my email from several work stations all running Gmail checking plugins.

On top of that, I am on a Linux / Unix lan, all behind the same IP.  Maybe not 100% virus proof, but a lot more so than a Windows OS Lan.
This is IMO a bug or short coming of google mail as of late. Your going to lose customers.

My bitterness stems from your cut and paste policy of issue resolution.

I just got this message for the first time- have reset my password, but I hope it doesn't happen over and over at it seems to be doing with you guys.
I'm pretty certain that my account has not been compromised- clearly a google issue.
I would advise you sort this out Google.... and I don't really like being forced to change passwords just because you think I should. Why don't you tell me the issue and let me decide if it's a password-changeable offense?

Do any of you guys have an Android phone? I have a T-mobile G1 and I'm wondering if it's anything to do with that?

I don't.

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Bascule 9/23/09 3:35 PM
Another thought I've had. I did, perhaps stupidly, hand my google logon details to a third party! Only done it once before and that was to Xoopit. This time I gave them to ping.fm. A very useful service but I can't help wondering if that has got anything to do with this error in my case. It maybe an innocent reason. Perhaps google is detecting the ping.fm activity (updating my gtalk status) as suspicious?

Similar issue here. First time it's occurring, hope it's the last. I did get a flurry of comments and the like on a bunch of the youtube videos linked to the account, but otherwise haven't used the account in a while. Doubt it's been hacked, but we'll see.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. devincherry 10/1/09 8:49 PM
Google,

Is there a technical person who can be contacted for details of the "suspicious activity" which is triggering this?
I recently began using a desktop app on my work computer which periodically sync's my outlook & google calendars. The app was acquired at this URL: http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=98563

Could this be triggering the "suspicious activity" auto-detector?

Also, I periodically send e-mails to/from my gmail account, which have been encrypted using PGP. I would be surprised if this triggered your auto-detection system, but I've seen stranger things working in IT...
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. thewolf 10/2/09 11:53 AM
I loathe the fact that on the odd occasion I log into webmail (I use outlook express normally) Google keeps asking for my phone number.

It'll be a cold day in hell before I'll hand over my phone number to them.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Manohararao 10/3/09 6:26 PM
Hello Google,

I am shocked to note that the attachments that I sent this evening to four of my contacts, are automatically being sent to an "unknown sender". I am very much concerned now, whether my account is safe enough? In addition to the usual 'Sent' folder, they are also appearing in the Trash folder and being sent to an "unknown sender". I am worried, as to whats going on?

Any clarification on this will be highly appreciated.

Thanks
Manohar
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Joshua 10/3/09 7:20 PM
The attachments in the trash are completely normal and nothing to worry about. They are simply a side-effect of how gmail's attachment uploader works. You can safely ignore them.

I have read all the comments, but can not solve my problem.  Nothing will accept my password on m other account.  I have changed it when asked, but now it will not take any of them.  Mine also seemed to start several weeks ago.  My setting were changed and I was send out a message to go to some shopping site,  It was in both English and Spanish.  The English had very poor grammar.  I have opened a second account and am in the process of changing my address with my contacts, but I am missing a day or so of mail that I can not get to.  I am appalled that there is no way to contact a person.  This is the only place I have found any answers.  Answers, but NOT solutions.

To all who are seeing this -- I am wondering if you have iPhones. I have seen several iPhone users complaining about this issue after upgrading their iPhone OS to 3.0.1, which was released about that time.

I have an iPhone and have upgraded the OS to 3.0.1 but am NOT seeing any issues with Gmail - so it may be sporadic thing, or may be due to some other software/config on a given iPhone (ie "jailbreaking", unsupported software, etc.)

Just something to consider.

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. veryfrustratedagain 10/6/09 6:43 PM
I am having the same problem everyone else is.....  they keep saying that my username and password don't match.  Yes they do.   I use a password manager and have done so for years.  My other Gmail accounts work. It is just one that no longer works.  I have scanned my computer. This system is very secure. Stop blaming this crap on the user and fix the problem ( or tell me how to fix it ). I don't believe all the complaints are people not knowing what to do.  There is something wrong on Google's end.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. christine.bryer 10/7/09 12:51 AM
Ok... so at least all of us who use gmail for serious emails have learned our lesson.  DO NOT MAKE GMAIL YOUR EMAIL FOR IMPORTANT S**.  There is a phone # in one of my emails that I need YESTERDAY and Google has locked my account because of so called suspicious activity.  It's obvious that they just want my cell # for their google records.  Just like paypal got sued for asking for people to send in their drivers licence & ss# information and never unlocking their account anyway because they were just taking down the info to sell to companies.  No way am I giving my PRIVATE cell phone # to some conglomerate megacompany and if I'm forced to I'll just pay the $10 for one of those disposable cell phones instead, but you bet once I open my account I'm transferring every bit of information in my DOCS and email out of that puppy asap.  They screwed with my business email address and now I can't access emails from clients or anything.  If google thinks anyone with a business account is EVER going to trust them with their info after something like this happens even once they don't know how people work.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. christine.bryer 10/7/09 9:32 AM
THIS IS PROPOSTEROUS.  I CANNOT WORK TODAY WITHOUT THE INFORMATION I HAVE STUCK BEHIND MY DISABLED ACCOUNT!!!  I did everything.  I even asked someone if I could borrow their cell phone to enter in the sms code THREE TIMES and google still won't let me into the account.  I've been dealing with this since last night and i won't get paid without the information i have in there.  If i get fired in this financial market due to this I am going to have lawyers so far up google's ass for causing someone to lose their job in one of the worst financial markets in history!!!  GOOGLE ANSWER US!!!! WHY THE HELL ARE OUR ACCOUINTS DISSABLED DUE TO SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY!!!  I NEEEE#EED to get into my businesss account NNNN OOWWW!!
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. christine.bryer 10/7/09 10:06 AM
Does anyone know why the sms code sent to the phone would  not verify and open a disabled account?
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. christine.bryer 10/7/09 12:22 PM
Ok.  So I put in my phone number like 10 times because every time I got the code...I entered the code and then I received a message saying that I used the phone # too many times so I have to get another stranger to give me their phone # so that I can get the code off of them. But what's the point? THE CODE DOESN'T WORK.  I'm literally in tears over this.  I NEED THAT INFORMATION so badly and I've lostt an entire day's worth of business because of this.  A friend of mine said she had the same problem and she had a PAID account with google for her business and they still disabled her account.  I had no idea how horrible gmail was for businesses.  Please whoever is reading this learn from me DO NOT DEPEND ON GMAIL FOR YOUR WORK EMAILS and important documents.

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. tughillwest 10/9/09 8:24 AM
"
We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account"

It's the new norm for Gmail it seems. Your encouraged to have multiple gmail accounts and asked to bring them your corporate email business.  Then every week or more frequently you get this warning from them. Then you jump through hoops to satisfy their perception of a "Safe password" (my passwords have NEVER been compromised.....EVER !)
Gmail knows how to protect you from bad email....they deny you access to it.

Simple yet brilliant.

Do yourself a favor....gmail is not what it used to be...keep looking for an email service.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. christine.bryer 10/9/09 1:50 PM
This problem turned our little company upside down this week.  We lost money and time and every employee has been advised to switch from gmail and not use it for anything of importance or anyhing work related.  I've calmed down because we've had to redo all the work that's been trapped behind the innaccessible email account and we just have to make do with that.

At least now I know gmail is NOT for anything that's even REMOTELY important and NEVER for anything work related.  I would rather get inundated with Spam then have my account shut down with no explanation and no way to unlock it.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. 3TinksAndAnEeyore 10/22/09 9:38 PM
I think I figured out why I got the "We've detected..." message.  I set up a QSP account for my daughter's Girl Scout Fall Sales activity and it gives the option of automatically downloading your contacts from gmail, aol, msn, yahoo, and a couple of others.  I thought this would be simple and fast.  I was supposed to enter my username and password.  Since this was with a reputable company and through the Girl Scouts, I went ahead and tried it.  It didn't work, I entered the e-mails manually, and forgot about it.  I think the magazine site trying to download my contacts probably triggered the security alert.  If this sound familiar to anyone else, I'd be curious to hear about it.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Yoonshik95 10/25/09 5:36 PM
I've listed the possible causes for this problem I am dealing with.

1. My problem has Been happening since three days ago. I accessed my gmail account on my friend's computer three days ago. He has an operating system called Lynix (forgive me if it is misspelled; I do not know the correct name) and perhaps the OS was a problem.

2. I own an iPod Touch, which I use daily to access gmail, that I have purchased in the previous week. I've first begun to notice the problem on my iPod. I've read all of the comments written here as of October 23rd, 2009, and saw that the iPhone OS v. 3.0.1 perhaps had a problem. Since the iPod touch and the iPhone share the same OS, maybe my new iPod touh 3rd Gen is the problem.

3. Recently, I have been receiving "chain letters" from some under classmens in the middle school I used to attend. I Replied All to that email and it appears that one of the email addresses is either not active or a nonexisting address. Sending emails to unkown addresses may have been a problem.

I love google. I have been using it for as long as I can remember. But what is this problem? Why is everyone beginning to have this problem simultaneously after September 11th, 2009? Why is Michelle, the Google Employee, giving us sh*tty information instead of a detailed, helpful one? Why is Google so ignorant in helping its users and supporters? Where is the solution? Where is Google when people are in risk of becoming fired and unemployed, because of it's ignorance and lack  of service?
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. joesixgig 11/19/09 5:08 AM
Just ran into this as well. I suspect that my account use really DOES look suspicious: I'm accessing google through Trillian iPhone, Trillian Astra desktop, FeedDemon, and the usual web interfaces (reader, Chrome sync, gmail web version, etc) sometimes all at once. This is not likely to stop, so it would be REALLY helpful if google could list the actual suspicious activity, and maybe allow us to declare specific IP addresses as 'from ourselves'.

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. staffoflifenutrition 11/29/09 2:18 PM
I think the first step is once you get access to your account, try resetting your password.  I have access, for now, but I don't trust Gmail.  This whole thing reminds me of the TSA and homelaned security: instead of going after the real bad people (in this case, hackers) and instead of solving the problem (Google's security), lets just lock out everyone that has a nail clipper in their luggage.  They won't mind, because, you know, a little "inconvenience" is worth the "illusion" of safety, no?

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. takeiteazyd 2/11/10 8:29 AM
Was asked today to reset my password because of "suspicious activity" on my Google Account. There's no way anybody could ever guess my password, nor is there any malware on my PC.

Joshua, I think all we want is the criteria set for "suspicious acitivity." It's very vague and if it happens enough, people get locked out. It's really all part of the same thread, as this is where their issue begins.

What is the suspicious activity?  I was prompted just now, after the first time in YEARS, to change my password.  I don't see anything different in here.  Only one spam message, it said it was from "me" but when I open them, they're the same old viagra ads and stuff that I usually get, sporatic, and often only one or (at the max) three messages in the spam box.  Nothing more than that.  Why was I prompted to change my password, and what precisely was this suspicious activity?  My antivirus hasn't detected anything.  Do I log in too often?  I ordered stuff from Amazon three times this week for the first time this year, sooo is THAT suspicious?  What gives?  I don't give my password out, and it was a password unique to gmail, not used on other sites.  Should I be worried?
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. hherbzilla 2/16/10 7:16 PM
I've gotten this message twice this past week... all since starting with Google Buzz. I have to wonder if the two are related?!? I don't recall EVER having this error message before Buzz.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Scumbag 2/21/10 8:22 PM
I've received this warning for the first time - and I believe my password is strong and uncompromised.

I did however configure (entered my username/password into) a PicasaWeb/YouTube viewer on a relatives new Panasonic Blu-Ray (DMP-BD60) player.  This device will only you to login to an account, but will not provide direct access to a users public photos/videos (i.e. without a password).  Well you can search, and find the content that way, but it is very slow and difficult to do keyboard entry using a remote control.

I don't believe Panasonic has "leaked" my personal details - but clearly there is a chance of this.  Instead I believe(/hope) that Google is mis-interpreting access from a strange device as being the source of suspicious activity.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Have you used a Panasonic "viera link" to access a Google account, then been warned of suspicious activity?

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. shfocus 2/24/10 4:35 PM
Could this have something to do with the recent introduction of Google Buzz? Which, I must say, dismal compared with facebook... Google fix this issue and focus on what you are good at: mail and ads! Leave the rest up to others (more competent) cause you have a classic case of trying to have too many fingers in the pie. What do you think about that?

Since the last 4 days, I've had the same problem BUT THERE ISN'T YET A CLEAR WAY AGAINST THE PROBLEM
I can log in, but I cannot see my gmail account

Why doesn't google look at this thread? I've had near 5000 emails and I'm using it since 2005

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Scumbag 3/11/10 9:55 PM
In relation to my scenario (Panasonic PicasaWeb/YouTube viewer), I believe the specific cause was concurrent (or near concurrent) logins occurring from two separate IP addresses.

Note that while Google forces you to change your password, you can then change it again and revert back again to the original password.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. banaslee 3/16/10 5:57 PM
Is it possible that I set an e-mail sent to me from me as phishing (it actually was about viagra or such)  and that triggered this warning?

I just can't accept is that no one is getting an answer on this? I do deserve to know if some of my normal activity is being considered suspicious! Or I do deserve to know which of my website/forum/whatever accounts was compromised so I can get any personal data out of it.

It's my data Google, you can't play that "there's something wrong with you but I won't tell you what" kind of stuff with us and our data!

I got the message for the first time today. Been using gmail since 2004. Not sure what triggered the suspicious activity. I did try to login to my youtube account from an iphone yesterday evening and it did not work (maybe because the suspicious activity was already in effect?) so that could be it. Or maybe because my wife access my account for me from her user profile on our PC while I may have been logged in to gmail under my own profile at the same time. Weird.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. andyebarnes 3/26/10 2:01 AM
I to have just started getting this kind of warning. I have had one request, no, demand! that I change my password when I tried to login a couple of days ago.
now i have had a red bar appear on my mail page warning me. I clicked the link for details and I must admit that in a way I am impressed that Google are conceerned about our security. Those complaining so loudly, remember, Google are gaining nothing by this. It is for your benefit. However, I wonder if it can't be done in a more friendly way.
Google. wouldn't a simple email to an alternative address with the info I found in the 'further info' from clicking the red bar suffice. Ask users to click to confirm the activity was theirs.
The pop up you get, for those that haven't checked theirs, lists 4-5 previous access occasions. You are asked to change password only if you find any that weren't you.

NOW. My problem is that I have my Blackberry to also receive my emails from gmail. This is always turned on as I don't want to have to keep changing settings on the blackberry everytime I walk away from the computer. I work online so I need seamless access top my gmail where I have all other emails delivered from all addresses.

Google. Does this mean that every time my blackberry fetches my mail, i'm going to get these warnings and worse, the further horror stories shared above? we need a solution to this. Good idea to make things more secure but like all new features, it needs sorting quickly before we all take flight!

Andy.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Joshua 3/26/10 6:47 AM
No, I'm pretty sure google is smart enough to separate regular access (like from a blackberry) from atypical access. And if it doesn't, you can always turn off the red warning bar.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. christine.bryer 4/10/10 4:51 PM
NO linking is not the problem because back when it happened to me there was no blackberry or iphone or any type of mobile.  Don't have the problem anymore, but iIt became pretty clear to me that gmail can only be used for personal email- or at least email that you're willing to lose if something happens... which happens more often with gmail than other email programs.  I needed my inbox messages for a law case and one day gmail just stopped giving me access to my account HORRID.  I will never trust gmail with anything important again.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. tenquilts 4/26/10 11:53 AM
I just got this message when logging into an account I no longer use (keep open for two reasons - so that mail sent there in error can still get forwarded to my new one, and so that I can revisit old forgotten conversations without moving everything).  However, the reason I stopped using it was a stalker-ish person in my life.  I'm not getting this message on the new account at all, despite using it on all the same computers as the old one, so I'm grateful for the heads-up and reminder it's probably best to delete everything I'm not using.

It would be great to have more detailed info, like if someone has made a dozen password guesses, but I say better safe than sorry.  My Yahoo and Hotmail accounts never did this for me.  Thanks, Google!

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. StarvingMe 6/2/10 2:31 PM
I just want to say that I noticed something:

I received this error twice now, BOTH times when I was using the Gmail notifier, when it said there'd been suspicious activity.  The first time, there'd been an email that just appeared in my inbox, and hell, I couldn't figure out where in the world the email came from, so I marked it as spam and went on, but then it asked again to have me change my password, and by now, I'm a bit upset, because this is the first real problem I've had with it...  What in the blue blazes is going on???

I replied to an email on my iPhone from my Hotmail account yesterday, but the iPhone had selected my GMail account to send the reply. Since I chose to reply all, GMail detected that I was sending a mass email to a bunch of random email addresses that the account had never seen before. GMail flagged this as suspicious activity and forced me to reset my password. Just wanted to put this out there if it happens to someone else.

Dear Google,
hi everyone i have lost my laptop last week and very recently i have got this message when i logged in from my gmail account. i was asked to change the password so i made a new password, now i am no more getting this message, but as i know that somebody was trying to access my account because in my laptop my username is saved (but not the password) so somebody might have tried to access my username and trying to use password which is actually he/she will never able to find out.
But since i have lost my HP laptop, is it possible from Google that who have actually not logged but i have tried to write my username with many time wrong combination of password  between 22-24 of june 2010 since i logged in on 24th of june 2010 and i got the message to change the password.
Is it possible from Google that i can get the person's IP address so that i can trace him through Cyber crime in India, i have lodged complaint to the relevant department. It will be great help from google if you can help me out.

Thanking you
Vishal.

I'd love it if Google would actually provide some concrete answers. I got this "suspicious activity" message today and saw that a spam email had been sent to my whole contact list, but there's no further information available. I've not had a virus or worm in years and years, and I'm stunned that it's happened now. Unfortunately, trolling the forums is not a particularly helpful way to resolve these issues. I realize that the volume of emails a company like Google has to deal with must be prodigious, and I appreciate that it's all free, but come on. You provide a service, you need to provide actual support for  that service, too.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. Erishiamu 9/9/10 8:27 AM
I've had a Gmail account since the Beta. I've never been hacked, never given out my password, and never bother to change it.

Today I got this same message and was required to change my password after I gave my phone number for account verification(which I've been avoiding doing for months despite all the irritating interstatal messages. I was then not able to change my password back.

I am very frustrated by this, and I'm seriously considering switching providers. Google may claim not to be evil, but I do not need them demanding my phone number be attached to my email. And I certainly don't need them deciding when I change my password.

i got this error message this morning from Gmail to change my password which i have. On seeing my inbox i noticed two messages around 1 am sent from my account which i have not sent (i was fast asleep and my comp was off too), although these have not been delivered may be gmail itself stopped them from transmitting- they contained nothing but some kind of link was being mass mailed to many of my contacts in the address book. this is only to share this with you guys and any tip/suggestion from gmail?
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. WIckedMuso 9/25/10 1:17 PM
This has happened to me TWICE in the past 7 days.  NOT FUNNY.

The first time, I found bounced emails that were clearly just raiding my address book.  Kudos to GMail for finding it.  Good.

But - the 2nd time - nothing.......

I have no viruses, no malware, I do access my gmail accounts (there are two of them) from my home, work and iPad.  It has all been working fine.

I have always used complex passwords with letters, numbers and special characters interspersed together.

I have just disabled buzz (although I have had that since beta as well) in case it is causing it.

I am with the rest of the people here.......

Fine.... make us "secure" but you need to tell us what the "suspicious activity" is!!!!!

The other unusual thing regarding this thread is that there was a flood of posts around September to November last year - then NOTHING again until September this year.  Personally - I think Google themselves have screwed up somewhere and that is triggering this.

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. WIckedMuso 9/25/10 1:20 PM
@ivonpradeep

That is exactly what the first instance of mine was like.  About 10 emails - all the same - with just a link in them.  The GMail engine itself didn't send them (marked the destination with a permanent failure - and I know some of the addresses still work on that list).

Google have not responded to this thread since its initial posting.

Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. WIckedMuso 9/25/10 1:28 PM
More info......

I went and checked the "Activity on this account" link at the bottom of the GMail page.

It shows that ALL the activity in the last 4 hours has been from my home computer (which is always on).  No other location.

So - no viruses/malware - sitting there all by itself - and that's "suspicious" ?

HOWEVER - there is an option to turn off the alert for suspicious activity - I wonder if I should turn it off ?

[And people complain about Facebook adding features that they don't properly explain to people]

Ive had my gmail account about 6 years. got this message the first time today.

sure enough, someone with a mobile phone from france appears to have got into my account and sent emails to my friends...

so, I changed the password asap.

is there a way I can report their activity/ip to google?
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. soccer100 12/17/10 3:51 PM
I received a message on my G1 phone that just said to input my password with no explanation.  When I put it in, it was not accepted.  I had to get on my computer to see the actual message about suspicious activity.  It is great that Google is monitoring for suspicious activity and helping us out.  However, I would like to know what suspicious activity they found so I can see if the problem runs deeper - like identity theft.  I would appreciate it if Google would provide information about the activity they found so I can see the extent of the potential damage.

I have a Google Sites website, and made a corresponding google mail account to go with it.  It is for my place of business.  Every week I send an email to all the people who visit our site and let them know of the sales.  I guess I am being punished for the website and the weekly e-mail becoming popular, as I have to go through this all the time, I have had to break the emails into groups and send them on different days.  What a huge pain in the ass.  I am currently looking for a new email service to use to avoid all this hassle.  Plus, the added bonus of being labeled "suspicious" for trying to use Google Sites and Google Mail together.
Re: "We've detected suspicious activity on your Google Account..." OVER AND OVER. klmarkey 1/10/11 7:47 PM
I have recently received warnings of suspicious activity.  Upon listing the "Last account activity", one of the items is colored red and marked as suspicious.  I needed to change my password as a result.

However, the IP address listed is one associated with my employer and probably occurred as result of attempting to access my Gmail account while using VPN or while working from work.

Is there any way to override Google's judgment that items listed there are suspicious if we know that the items can be trusted?  There doesn't appear to be a way to do so.  And I don't wish to turn off this protection.

I got locked out of my Gmail due to "suspicious activity". The culprit I recognized as my VPN server.

Google: please fix this. Or else Gmail will be useless for all those people using VPN.

I am looking into what seems 2 be someone hacking my account.  I did get it back and changed the password.

3 ip addresses dont look right on my activity information page.

Mobile Italy (151.47.169.131) 10:12 am (2 hours ago)
Mobile United States (NY) (74.82.68.18) Feb 10 (19 hours ago)
Mobile United States (NY) (74.82.68.33) Feb 10 (1 day ago)

the 2 NY ones for some reason may be my mine but it's not normal...  There a RIM dns.  aka BB and i use my BB to check my e-mail.  The Italy one i am sure was the hacker.  This was also when they tried to send out spam on my account and had it locked.  Is there a way 2 report this Italy ip and have the user blocked from accessing Google?
