|I can't connect to gmail homepage on my computer||edwinlin88||8/8/09 8:07 PM|
Whenever I try to load the Gmail home page, I get the error message:
"The connection has timed out
The server at mail.google.com is taking too long to respond."
I also can't load the gmail help section! but google and everything else works fine.
This is the case for both Firefox 3.5.2 as well as my IE5.
Gmail works fine on other computers in my house as well as for other people.
I have cleared my cache, history, temp internet files and cookies as well as having done a Kaspersky Internet security scan. No viruses showed up on the scan but there is still a possibility it is virus related.
Anyone else have this problem? Any solutions??

I had a similar unresolved problem with all my internet browsers (timeouts, connection failures, etc) when i changed Operating Systems on my laptop. In the end, i think the culprit was some faulty DNS nameserver junk. I don't understand much of it, but what i do know is that when i installed Comodo Firewall (Free; http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html) there was an option during the install to switch your current nameservers to the 'more secure Comodo nameservers'. For whatever security it might provide i accepted, and when i ran the internet again, i stopped getting timeout and connection failures.
Hope I helped!

Thanks, you are right, using the Comodo DNS Server has made my Gmail work again! but isn't it strange that it only works after installing this third-party software. It would be better if I would be able to have a solution without installing the Comodo Firewall. But thanks D-rock for the temporary solution

I've gone through the 'connecting to gmail' 14 times now and frankly I'm rather sick of it. I get email from BT without a problem. Indeed the ONLY reason I signed-up for a Google account was because T-mobile/HTC said it needed it to update maps.
Why won't it find a 'secure server'?

Comodo told me that Norton firewall was installed. It was there from a fresh reinstall of the hp system. XP btw. I just uninstalled Norton Internet Security and that did it for me. I will try comodo next, but it wasn't needed first.

This isn't very helpful for those of us less tech savvy. What is Comodo? What if we haven't had an recent updates that would cause this problem?
