|Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||JCStarnes||4/22/09 12:06 PM|
I'm using Gmail through Firefox on my Mac wired to the Internet through a router and cannot get Gmail to load/work (typically I can get it to open from the sign on screen, but then it locks up - no chat, no archiving, no reading e-mails- or it just posts a completely blank white page, with no option to use HTML at the bottom).
I can get to my Gmail when I log on using another computer that is linked through the same router, AND I can get to my Gmail when I use my Mac at home on a wireless (different) connection.
I've attempted to clear my cache and cookies, tried opening Firefox in safe mode, and attempted to disable all my plug-ins.
Can anyone take a moment and relieve me of this frustrating problem!??!

Some other URLs to try:
https://mail.google.com/ (note the 's')
Those are listed in decreasing order of functionality. If some of those work, it might at least help you narrow down the cause of the problem.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||JCStarnes||4/22/09 12:28 PM|
Many thanks Joshua.
All of those links allowed me to view my inbox, but the first two would not allow any functionality (viewing messages, archiving, etc.) where the last two allowed them.
Any chance this is a symptom of an easy to fix cause?
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Joshua||4/22/09 12:33 PM|
This means the "older" and "html" versions work, but not the regular version. Usually in this case I would bet strongly on clearing cache and cookies as being the fix, but that didn't work for you. A more aggressive fix would be to completely remove firefox and install the most recent version from scratch.
I don't see many problems like this on the Mac, so I don't have a lot of other ideas.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||JCStarnes||4/22/09 1:11 PM|
Again, many thanks for your attention Joshua.
I attempted to clear the cookies and cache again, to no avail, so I removed Firefox from my Mac. In getting back online, I used Safari and ran into the same issue with Gmail as I was having before (and the older, HTML versions are not working as well as I earlier thought).
So it appears that it's not my Firefox, since I get the same issues on Safari.
But it's not my Mac, as I have full Gmail functionality when I connect through my home connection.
But it's not my office Internet, as I can get full functionality when I log on via another (Windows PC) computer.
I list all that not to explain how frustrating it is (although it is) but in hopes of whittling down the issue to something recognizable.

I have been unable to sign into Gmail since about the 12th of April. 10 days of hell, using Yahoo and thunderbird alternately.
My server, Atlink, just called by phone and said Gmail had made some changes and likewise, he had to make changes at Atlink to allow Gmail to load. He made the changes and everything seems OK now.
I am using a Mac G3 with OS X10.3.9, Camino browser 1.6.7. and it has always worked flawlessly until this Gmail / Server error appeared. Looks like Gmail is responsible for this trouble.

I am using Firefox 3.0.10 with Ubuntu 8.10, having problems with loading, reading and getting blank screen. It has not been working for a week. I have clear cache and cookies continuously. I used basic html and it crashs after a few deletes. Only work for one or two delete.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||caly.brown||6/1/09 8:35 AM|
I am able to delete up to 4 email. But after 5 email, it dies.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Joshua||6/1/09 8:40 AM|
@caly.brown: if basic html mode is causing your browser to crash, that almost certainly means that your browser is itself very messed up. I'd try starting in safe mode or just completely removing and reinstalling the browser.

Change happen when we had change of connection with new ADSL, the problem arises with gmail. My husband is having the same problem. Neither of us change brower, the only change is old connection from through ADSL modem which burn out in electricial storm to be replace by a new ADSL2 Router D840R. The change has only been the Router.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||caly.brown||6/1/09 12:17 PM|
My husband got on gmail at work with no problem. But at home, he and I can't get on gmail. So he think that the brower is not the problem.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Jeff Brown||6/1/09 3:11 PM|
Hi, I'm the husband :D
To be clear, we had zero problems with gmail, chat, email, voice chat everything was golden. Then 2 Fridays ago, a terrible electrical storm burned out our relatively old (+2 yrs) ADSL modem.
Our replacement modem is an ADSl2+Router (D840R). We made no changes to our browsers, our security, no new add-ons or plug-ins etc. The ONLY change was a modem change. After verifying that my account did indeed work from other machines, and different connections, the only variable is the modem!
Additionally the problem exists (sometimes slightly better sometimes worse) in all of the other browsers we've tried, including: Opera, Epiphany, Galeon, and Konqueror.
As a technical dweeb, I know this sounds weird, but casting this problem as a browser issue makes zero sense. Even if some system update magically snuk in and we forgot about it, such a change shouldn't have affected 5 different browsers.
Occam's razor suggestions that the culprit is our modem change. And a change in our connection methods at home should NEVER affect how gmail perceives our connection. But all evidence seems to point to that for a conclusion.
We went to our neighbor's house, they also have ADSL with the same (as our new) modem. But they use windows. But gmail failed with some of the same problems. Although sending an email worked from Windows Firefox, Once only.
Just to be sure, we ran the safemode restart, that Joshua suggested, with every item checked, and got exactly the same error that has plauged us since the modem change:
Some Gmail features have failed to load due to an Internet connectivity problem. If this problem persists, try reloading the page, using https, using the older version, or using basic HTML mode. Learn More.
[ OK ]
And yet again, every down graded version has been tried, with differing levels of success, but none are fully working.
In the end, this mysterious change has annoyed me to the brink of switching to another online email system. Which, though arguably inferior to a working-gmail, is infinitely superior to non-working-gmail. :(
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Joshua||6/1/09 3:57 PM|
Sorry, but you guys aren't clearly explaining the problem. @caly.brown said that the browser "crashes". Perhaps she doesn't intend that word, but a browser crash (meaning the browser exists unexpectedly) can only be the result of a browser problem.
What @Jeff Brown describes does sound more like a network issue. I don't really have much of a suggestion other than calling your network provider.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Jeff Brown||6/1/09 5:42 PM|
Caly's Crash was the 'white screen of death' that happens when you attempt to run almost any of the non-trivial commands in gmail while this problem is occurring.
However, I'm not sure that it's a network issue, because all other websites, services etc work perfectly fine, again, only gmail is having this issue. I don't know enough about system administration to understand if the modem is the culprit all by itself, though that seems a bit strange. But I think that possibly something about how gmail connects is disrupted by the modem. ... which begs the question, How does gmail connect back? is it using ajax? or java? or what?
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||55john||6/2/09 4:44 AM|
As a temporary solution I can get to my gmail either by using interenet explorer or by using Firefox going to google.com, then to calendar and then to my gmail. Thanks for the help from everyone.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||55john||6/2/09 4:48 AM|
Sorry, I tried the calendar to gmail route again and got an error message "REDIRECT LOOP". So that temp fix doesn't work.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||JohnW2||6/2/09 5:03 AM|
I'm not going to read ALL the above, but if this occurred after a change of Router, have you checked to make sure that the appropriate ports are open, that your DMZ is properly configured, etc.?
I've no idea who makes this D840R router - but there must be a manual for it somewhere - in the box, or on the web. Maybe there's even a blacklist incorporated.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||alanh1954||6/3/09 4:36 PM|
The second one worked for me, which is turning off labs. I don't really want either of the last two, because I lose all my labels, which I've worked so hard at creating colors for! I wonder what google and/or firefox did that caused this bug. It just appeared today, a little after 5 PM eastern daylight time (June 3).
Here's a link to the screenshot of how my gmail inbox just appeared when I got home today --
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||alanh1954||6/3/09 4:39 PM|
Oh wait, I see that not having labs means that all my custom colors are gone. So there is no solution to this, is that correct? I'm using Firefox 3.0.10 for the Mac (OS X 10.5.7).
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Joshua||6/3/09 6:35 PM|
@alanh1954: I assum you've been through the standard steps of clearing your cache and cookies and disabling any firefox extensions?
After that, the next step would be to disable your labs one by one to see if you can isolate which one is causing the problems.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||JCStarnes||6/4/09 9:04 AM|
I've been keeping up with this post (being the originator) in hopes of a solution being found. I still have the same issue, but wanted to post for two reasons. One to keep the interest in this issue up, as it seems to be affecting more than just a random person. And two, to offer more insight into my problem (explained in the original post).
After reading Jeff Brown's post, I was reminded that my local internet provider changed the IP address of my work location around the time that I started having the GMail issues. So while I didn't change a router or modem, I did have a full IP address change. I realize this doesn't offer any solution, but perhaps it will trigger someone smarter than I to find a solution, because this is quite frustrating.
As a shot in the dark, if I were to open up my router's port to 'allow' gmail, what address or port would I use?
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||sensitiva84||6/4/09 9:51 AM|
I got the same problem which makes me go insane. It is continuous and it's frustrating.
What is funny about it,is the fact that this error comes up only in Google Chrome.Other browsers work well.
I hope someone is going to fix this problem, it is not a matter of provider.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Jeff Brown||6/5/09 7:17 AM|
Well, as of yesterday, the 'safest' gmail: html by https, stopped working for sending mail.
As that is the primary reason for using gmail, this became unacceptable.
However, I came up with a work-around for us. First we use Ubuntu linux, so standard with the install was Pidgin, (the new name for the IM client formerly known as GAIM). That gives us back the chat.
Second we downloaded and setup Thunderbird. The trickiest part of this was changing my options in gmail to allow IMAP. Which required careful analysis of the settings form in gmail and eventually hacking the gmail url to get the status to change. But once we accomplished the settings change, and began the hours long download of messages, we now have an email client.
Neither solution is ideal, and I still hope there's a resolution to this issue. But for others of you wringing your hands, this might be something you can use too.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||JCStarnes||6/11/09 9:36 AM|
In hopes of jinxing my good fortune, I'm going to report that my Gmail has been working for the past 3 days from the connection I was having issues with. I have updated a few programs that have automatic updates, but other than that, I've done nothing different. Anyone else having any luck? If so, any idea why?
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Jeff Brown||6/11/09 4:19 PM|
Dang, it's working for us too! But I just noticed it after I saw your reply today. How wierd is that? Meh, I mean YAY!
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||javasan01||8/4/09 2:22 PM|
Well, I'm having the same problems as advised by everyone else too. The sad part is I can access from my corporate network but not from home. No changes to the IP address, no power surges requireing a new router...nothing. Everything works well for other sites except G-mail. Funny thing is, I can make a comment here but cannot access my inbox, chat etc.
Thinking of dumping G-mail and going back to another e-mail platform, which would be a tremendous shame!
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||Yankee 49||9/24/09 1:17 AM|
I started to have the exact same problem on 9/20/09 and also have to use HTML. Have had this account over 2 years and never had this problem using the same PC with Vista Ultimate and IE7. Cleared cache, no browser add-ons. What gives? Seems like server/software issue if it only happens with G-mail on your website. The blame game on computers and peoples' software doesn't cut it!
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||mymac||11/30/10 3:23 PM|
I have a new mac os x 1.6 and I can't use gmail's standard version using the wireless vodafone k3675 modem. The screen gets black every time and it is to much for me.
It worked at the begining and than I tried gmail chat and skype, wich failed to work and now I am stock with html version of gmail.
|Re: Gmail will not load/function even after troubleshooting||JohnW2||12/1/10 7:22 AM|
@Yankee 49 - let me just ask you this: if, as you postulate, this were the case then with well over 120million users of Gmail (some 70% of whom use the webmail interface to access their mailbox) does it not seem strange that there's perhaps 1000 users who experience similar problems to yours?
I'm not here to defend Google (they're big enough to do that for themselves) but there's only two things that stop computers performing correctly - software and users. If it's software, then the problem you are suffering from would affect absolutely everyone (which patently it doesn't!) but as for users ....
The original poster of this thread suffered from the problem on one PC but not another, which tends to point to the configuration of the PC being the differentiator - and that's why I feel I can honestly say that the problem is with the PC's configuration (which includes ALL the software which is installed on the PC as well!). In your case, you're using IE7. Can I suggest, purely as a trial, you install Google's Chrome, and then try to load up Gmail. Doing so will not harm your installation of IE7, and afterwards you can just as easily click on the Start bar, select Chrome and use the uninstall feature provided. But I think you will find that a clean install of Chrome will allow you to work with your Gmail mailbox, showing you that it's not a problem with the Gmail service.

Easy fix for the problem of Gmail loading forever a white screen instead of gmail in chrome - disable McAfee Site Advisor: right-click on the green M at the top right corner of your Chrome window, and disable it.
