Google earth 5 hangs on saying 'loading myplaces.kml, including enabled overlays' zenmarku 9/16/09 7:49 AM
I'm have the Windows Vista Home Premium and when installed 'Google Earth 5' it hangs on while starting and says  'loading myplaces.kml, including enabled overlays'. I waited for long time but nothing happens. Uninstalled it and the reinstalled again and the same thing. May someone help me.

Hi zen,

Did you have GE installed before? It is possible that your 'Places' file has become corrupted or is somehow interfering with GE5. Try this:

-Locate your Places file, which is myplaces.kml. You'll find it in: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Google\GoogleEarth\myplaces.kml

You may need to enable 'show Hidden Files' first to see it. You can do this in Control Panel> Folder Options> View or in an Explorer Window> Tools menu> Folder Options> View

- When you get to the folder, right-click>rename the existing "myplaces.kml"  to "old-myplaces.kml". You should also see a file there called "myplaces.kml.backup", which was the next to the last places file. If you have placemarks from a prior version that you want to try to recover, at that point rename the file "myplaces.kml.backup" to "myplaces.kml", then launch GE.

- If you still have the problem, go back to the folder above and delete that "myplaces.kml" file. Then try GE again. If it launches, it should appear with a new Places panel with just a sightseeing tour in it. If you want to try again to retrieve some of your former placemarks, you can then try opening old-myplaces.kml using GE's File>Open menu. If it opens, drag the items you want from Temporary Places to Places.

this worked perfect,
i saved my places to my desk top.
deleted myplaces & myplaces.backup file in C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Google\GoogleEarth\myplaces.kml
opened Google Earth, NO hanging on  'loading myplaces.kml, including enabled overlays'.
clicked open file and loaded the saved myplaces.kml from my desktop.
closed down Google Earth & reopened.
no hanging on  'loading myplaces.kml, including enabled overlays'.
Hint, if on company network the stored file path might be different. (u might have to hunt for it)

This solution did not work for me.  I am running XT and previously subscribed to GEPlus.  GE worked earlier this week but now i it hangs on the splash screen showing loading myplaces.kml.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled GE without success.  When i uninstalled GE i made sure the directory where myplaces.kml was stored is empty then rebooted and reinstalled GE - same problem.
