Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. DavidSchPT 2/22/09 1:46 PM
I have used previous versions of Google Earth many times on this same computer.  It has always worked great.  (Dell Inspiron E1505)

I have installed Google Earth 5.0.11337.1968.  I try to start it.  I see brief hourglass, then it gives up.  Hourglass changes back to regular cursor, and nothing else.

I have tried starting in DirectX mode.  No difference.  Starting in OpenGL mode.  No difference.

Deleted my cache (.dat) files as suggested.  No difference.  Also installed Browser Add-In.  No difference.

Uninstalled it entirely and then re-installed from scratch.  No difference.

Updated my video driver files.  (ATI Mobility Radeon X1400).  No difference.

Have confirmed that my Firewall allows Google Earth to access internet.  It does.  No difference.

I cannot find any other topics or posts that are relevant.  As I say, the previous versions ran on this same computer wonderfully well.  Now I cannot get any interface or even an error message to appear at all.

Would appreciate any help anyone can offer.  Thank you.2009-02-23

Should also clarify that my system meets or exceeds all of the recommended system requirements.  Windows XP Pro (64 bit).

I have exactly the same problem. The program simply will not load. Using Mac OS 10.56 with ATI Radeon X1900 graphics card.  I have carried out all recommended steps. Very frustrating!

Exactly the same as my problem.

Exactly the same problem here.  Followed all troubleshooting steps, system exceeds requirements, google earth barely hourglasses and then gives up.  Help!

Same problem. This version simply refuses to start up. Windows XP Pro on a Dell Latitude D505. Lets get this fixed or give me the old version back!
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. vkondrat 2/26/09 4:38 AM
I tried same version on Linux (Ubuntu 8.10 64bit). Symptoms are quite similar. When I run from terminal, I see the error:

/tmp$ googleearth
./googleearth-bin: relocation error: /usr/lib32/i686/cmov/libssl.so.0.9.8: symbol BIO_test_flags, version OPENSSL_0.9.8 not defined in file libcrypto.so.0.9.8 with link time reference

I also have problems in Google Earth on this PC. I am using Vista 32 bit Home Premium that runs on an Asus P5Q Pro MB with Asus 3650 Video card. There is always message on initalizing Google Earth: "Google Earth has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". There is also a diagnosis report sent out to somewhere.

I'd checked everythings I can think of: reinstalled different versions of Google Earth, checked firewall, etc etc but the same problem continues.

I have also reinstalled Vista from scratch because of this, and Google Earth did open ok, but for one time only. The next time I tried to open the application, the same problem comes back.

In fact I have other PCs running with other MB without any problem.

Are there compatibility issue with Asus Motherboard?

Are there any compatibility list with other software or hardware available?

Any solutions
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. gwlankford 3/7/09 2:12 PM
I stuck too.  I've installed it multiple times and each time it finishes successfully.  I've updated my Drivers, turned off my firewall and antivirus software.  Run at Direct x and Open GL.
I've also deleted all my places files.  Nothing works.  It simply doesn't run.  I don't even get an initial screen.

I'm running Windows XP SP3.

Any suggestions?

Reading all of these posts convinces me that someone at Google screwed up and there needs more basic work to be done.
Does anyone at Google read this thread?  I wonder.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. GianluG 3/14/09 8:16 AM
Hi everyone, I was in the same initial situation of the original poster, exept I had previously unistalled Google Earth and then reinstalled version 5 beta.
I solved the problem using CCleaner, a software by Piriform. Using CCleaner I saw there were many missing shared dll files linked to Google Earth, then I fixed the problems in the registry, then unistalled Google Earth, then cleaned again the windows registry for the same problems (maybe during unistall the keys were readded ...)
Then I re-installed Google Earth 5 beta from scratch. Now it runs!
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. artlyons 3/14/09 12:11 PM
CCleaner has no Mac version.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. Prebral 3/15/09 4:08 AM
Same problem here. I just get the splash screen for a short while and then GE 5 crashes without any further notice (no matter whether DirectX or OpenGL is selected). HP nx7300, Intel 945 Express Chipset, WinXP Pro SP2, 1 GB RAM. Previous versions of Google Earth worked fine.

I have udapted graphics adapter driver, checked DirectX version, cleaned registry, GE is allowed by firewall, I have temporarily removed myplaces etc.

Some further observations that might help:
1) GE seems to crash before it attempts to connect, I tried to enable firewall log and have seen no GE activity there.
2) One of my previous instalations was on a non-default drive (D: instead of C:). But there seems to be no trace of it (at least concerning registry stubs) and the new version has installed itself on C: automatically.
3) I have a GE browser plugin installed. Did not try to uninstall it yet, as it seems to be a separate installation and I do not want to mess with my system too much, asi it seems that the problem is probably in new version of GE itself.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. Prebral 3/15/09 1:19 PM
Some additional info:
1) I have stated before that GE does not even try to connect before the crash, but I have recently spotted such an activity in one of firewall logs, so it happens at least sometimes.
2) I have also searched for recently changed files and noticed that GE creates .dmp (dump?) files after a crash in Temp. However, these dumps are empty. They have names like Google_Earth_5.0.11337.1968_beta_090315-205242_1.dmp (which is a combination of version, date and time, so there is no info hidden there)
3) I have tried to monitor, what files are accessed by GE. Here is the list (.txt), sorted chronologically and filtered for "googleearth":
http://prebral.sweb.cz/ge_log.txt
I do not understand, what may be wrong (as there are more errors stated and some of them might not be critical), but maybe it helps someone...
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. davidj1957 3/22/09 11:12 AM
EXACTLY what is happening to me....  I have been trying to solve this GE issue for weeks.  I AM completely baffled.  GOOGLE needs to research this issue,  I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 with a Radeon Mobility X1300 graphics card. My computer meets/exceeds the needs of the software.  I had Google Earth running less then two months ago.  The next thing I see is an Google Earth Updated-- I loaded that and all I know is the program now crashes.  What the hell!!
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. Suckered mug 3/26/09 12:36 AM
I had this problem with Google earth 5 and as some other readers commented followed the instructions to clear cache and files.
None of this worked ....got the latest drivers for the graphics and again no difference.
I uninstalled and re-installed it also to no avail several times. The blasted thing jammed up altogether every time.
I do note however I have a radeon 9600 graphics card ... but Radeon cards are pretty common in over 50% of computers.

It had worked well as google earth 4 and is a very good program but this latest Beta 5 offering is the most buggy piece of trash they have ever produced.. can't see why they've released it if it isn't working.

Do your self a favour and uninstall all the google programs ( all work apart the latest earth 5) ......... re install the older Earth 4 (which you can find from Old apps.com) which I did and again it works fine....... It isn't your graphics card!
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. MtnUser 3/27/09 9:24 AM
I'm in the same boat. googleearth.exe appears in the task manager for a split second and then disappears. Have checked firewall, etc. and it should be running. I do remember an earlier version of GE working. Maybe it's time for some registry work?

This is frustrating as I'm not seeing a fix on any of the other forums for this one.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. Btvcon 4/2/09 7:29 AM
I have a very similar problem!  Installed GE5 and when running the program you get the GE5 splash screen come up and then "Google Earth has encountered a problem and must close sorry for the inconvenience".  Then GE write a dump file somewhere???
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. artlyons 4/2/09 5:15 PM
The answer at this time seems to be is to stick with Google Earth 4 which you can easily download and works fine on my Mac OS 10.5.6 and leave GE 5  to the pro's who apparently developed this dog.
Nuff said!
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. cjlowe 4/5/09 2:26 PM
Thanks, I had the same issue with GE 5 not starting after it appeared to install without issue. Downloaded GE 4 from http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html. Once I completely deleted a trial version of Google Earth Pro, it downloaded and opened fine.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. Prebral 4/5/09 10:45 PM
Interesting. I also had Google Earth 4 Pro trial installed once - and on another than default drive. I considered it to be one of possible problem causes and have uninstalled it and purged everything resemblng a GE reference from registry and documents and settings, but GE 5 is still not running.

Same problem. Mac OS X 10.5.7.

Google Earth 5.0 and 4.3 just bounce in the dock for a few seconds then quit. Have tried all of the above. Version 4.2 works so I'm using that but it lacks a lot of features.

I, too, am in this position and am deeply disappointed that the google corporation have done nothing about it all these months.

I am having the same problem with my Mac OS X 10.5.8 :(  I could see the black background of GE pops up and then the software quits. Anyone knows the fix?

I Fixed mine! and I'm computer illiterate. I was stuck where I had run the 5.0 upload, wouldn't complete. or unistall, or run.
This is what worked for me. Going from the START menu>C>Program files(x86)>Google>Google earth,          I found a list of files, there is an Google application file   it is 17,555KB in size    I right clicked and added a short cut to the desktop.    Now it works fine.

Eventhough the last answer refers to windows, that's nice.
After I installed snow leopard, I tried installing the latest version of G.;earth and it was successful. Get snow leopard.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. lilobot 10/18/09 6:36 PM
I had the same issue running on XP. here's what worked for me:

- uninstall GE
- delete reg key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Google\Google Earth Plus
- delete reg key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Earth Plus
- delete folder C:\Documents and Settings\[ME]\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth
- reinstall GE

not sure if all of the above is necessary but it worked for me :-)

I have an Inspiron 6000 that ran an older version of GE successfully.  After upgrading GE boots for a second or two then disappears.  The machine had a video driver update pending but installing that made no difference.  There is another identical Inspiron 6000 notebook in the house that is running GE just fine.  I'm puzzled that Google is completely silent on the issue.

Thanks LuciaM,

I upgraded to GE 5.xxxxxxxx.x.x.x.x.x.xx or whatever happened to be the latest at the time.  After upgrading GE would start and begin server login and then just close.  Much searching couldn't find an explanation.

I tried the second suggestion from LuciaM and it worked.  Changing the names of the myplaces.kml file and backup one let it work fine.  Thanks so much for a solution which worked.

Hi everyone.
I tried the 'lilobot' method and it didn't work for me, but it did give me an idea.
I simply
1     Created a 'restore point'
2     uninstalled GE
3     Created another 'restore point' - OK I know I'm going overboard here.....but I'm so pi&&%ed off with GE!!
4     Used 'regedit' to remove EVERYTHING with "Google" in the name..... there were 341 items to delete
5     You've guested it 'created another 'restore point'
6     Restart PC
7     Download GE WITHOUT 'Chrome' - Google need to suffer a bit for their inaction on this matter
8     Enjoy GE.
Note all your 'favorite' places are erased.... but at lease GE now works
Enjoy

To all,
I upgraded to a laptop using windows vista and when I first installed GE it worked fine. Then for some reason it crashed and nothing I did fixed the problem. Next I upgraded to windows 7, hoping that would cure the problem. No Joy! I have tried all the recommended repairs and upgrades still no help! However, I go back to my desktop usind windows 2000 and GE 5 works just fine thank you very much. It seems to me both Google and Microsoft can take credit for this idiotic exercise in futility.
I'm going to try something similar to p_lovering.

With XP SP3 I went to Task Manager, Processes and removed all entries for Google Earth, then exited Task Manager.  Opened GE v4 with no issues.  Will stay away from GE v5 for now.

Google Earth went missing.

Shows to be in the google folder but cant open and not in the programs menu.

No customer support for google anything.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. tsisco10 1/10/10 7:14 PM
Well I finally got Google Earth back up and running. What I had to do was uninstall Google. Clean out as many files as I could find. Then reinstall GE using customer installation. De-select everything except GE-5.0. It now works in either Directx 9.0 mode or Open-GL. I'm running Windows 7, which came with Directx 11. My conclusion is Microsoft and Google need to get their acts together. This was, without a doubt, a frustrating experience. I've had GE5 running for 3 days without a hitch. Is is going to last? Who the heck knows. Will this fix work with other OS's? I have no idea. With my limited knowledge of GE and WINDOWS VISTA/7 I wouldn't bet on anything. Good Luck.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. RFToomey 1/13/10 6:54 AM
Just to add my experience with the newest version of Google Earth... I have an iMac (3.06 GHz, 4MB RAM) and recently upgraded to OS X v10.6.2 (Snow Leopard). After the update, I noticed that Earth wouldn't load... When I tried to launch it, the Google Earth icon bounced on the doc the way a loading Mac app does, but eventually it just "stopped bouncing". Note that I don't keep the Earth application icon on the dock because I don't use it that often - I launch it from my Applications folder. Anyway, after the Snow Leopard install and my attempts to launch Earth, it behaved repeatedly the way I just described, staying "unlaunched" on the dock with no "little headlight" under the doc icon, i.e., no visual indicator that the app was actually running. When I tried to drag Earth off the dock, it would just "spring back" yo the dock but this time WITH the "running app headlight" indicator under the icon on the dock. However, still no Google Earth menu bar at the top of the desktop display when I clicked on the app, even though it "acted" like it was running, at least by the fact that it was on the dock with the running app indicator.

At this point, after having done repeated Force Quits, I finally gave up and uninstalled Earth by dragging it from the Applications folder to the trash. Thinking I just needed an upgrade (I hadn't upgraded it in quite some time; I don't know which version I had been running), I downloaded the latest version for the Mac. Long story short: the latest version (5.something) exhibits exactly the same symptoms. Any enlightenment on what I might try to get it running again would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi all, I had the same problem in my Windows 7 64 after our IT guy change something in our Norton firewall... I'm not sure what happen but that affected all the PC's in the company. After install/Uninstall, delete registry entries, etc, what work for me was:

go to Drive (c:)\Users\(youruser)\AppData\

and delete all folder with names Google Earth in folders Local, Roaming and LocalNow.

Now run GE and done! Backup fisrt the folders you want to delete because maybe you want to load the kml's in there later.

Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. BruceBenson 2/10/10 8:18 PM
Also had problem installing Google earth and getting it to do anything but immediately exit (as shown by process explorer/task manager).

From hints in this forum I traced it down to having changed a share (\\mydata changed to something else).  Once I changed this back it suddenly started to work.  Since I needed to change this share, I tried to track down what Google Earth was using.  This I could not do.  So instead, I got a bit crazy, went into regedit and started to change every occurrence of the old share name to the new share name (programs, installers, etc..).

While I changed a lot each time, I'm pretty sure that when I changed the share references related to explorer.exe that Google Earth suddenly started to work.  I didn't try to isolate which change did it as I was just elated, after hours of messing with this because my 11 yr old daughter wanted to use it, that it worked and I declared victory.

Hope this helps.

Google earth worked fine for years on my pc, on which nothing has changed except regular windows updates that are installed as released.

I am running Win XP Pro, SP3, Compaq Presario R3000 (AMD) Notebook PC, with 4 GB RAM.

Ever since the forced upgrade to 5.x, a while back, I have been unable to run google earth (GE).

I have attempted the following to resolve:
1.  tried to open in standard, directx and opengl
2.  uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times, every possible version with every combination of options
3.  uninstalled, used regedit to remove every key/string/value in the registry pertaining to GE, rebooted then reinstalled
4.  tried to run from the shortcut and from googleearth.exe
5.  read and followed every instruction in every thread on this topic in the GE forums

Still, no matter what I do, I get just the hourglass, no error message, and the program never opens, but it will stay active in my task list.  If I attempt to run GE again, another instance will remain in my task list.

Any help or assistance would be sincerely appreciated.
Re: Google Earth simply won't start -- Have followed all advice and all Help Topics I can find. MJ101 3/19/10 6:42 PM
After much trial and error, I found a solution.  I performed lots of tasks, but the maginc formula for me (I think) was this:

1.  uninstalled GE, firefox, AVG free anti-virus
2.  looked through add/remove programs and uninstalled anything not needed
3.  rebooted
4.  did all windows updates
5.  went to pcpitstop free tests and followed most of the recommendations
6.  rebooted again
7.  cleaned the registry with Eusing (which is free)
8.  rebooted again
9.  reinstalled GE, and it worked!
10.  reinstalled  firefox and AVG anti-virus

Looking back, I don't think I needed to uninstall/reinstall firefox and AVG, so if I had to do it over again, I would skip those steps.  I included them here just because that's what I actually did.

So, I think the bottom line is to clean the registry using Eusing...that seemed to do it.

Can I add my thanks to lilobot. The solution of deleting reg keys and one folder, as per 10/19/09 above worked fine for me.

But you'd think Google would have known about this problem and sorted it by now, or, at the very least, posted lilobot's solution as one of the options on their GE helpdesk.  As others, I am not impressed and feel let down by Google. They can keep their precious Chrome if that's the best service they can offer with Google Earth.

GE worked fine for me...nary a problem.  Then I upgraded to Service Pack 3 (XP), GE hasn't worked since.  No support from Google what-so-ever.  I guess they are more interested in creating fancy headers for different events than helping their users.  (The PacMan header?)

Hi all,

We have released a new version - Google Earth 5.2. If you are still experiencing problems, please try the following:
1. Download and run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301)
2. Complete a fresh install of the latest version of GE (http://earth.google.com/)

Please let us know if this solves your issue. If you are still experiencing problems, let us know the specifics and we will continue to work on finding a resolution.

Thanks!

(Windows users only)

Uninstall Earth
Re-install earth ( go to advanced setup and unclick the box that says "Allow Google Earth to automatically install recommended updates).
Restart your computer.

Thats all I had to do!

The link to the Windows installer clean-up utility is out of date. MS has removed that utility from their downloads page. I'm still having the problem of GE refusing to run without admin rights, which is a real problem. This problem is persisting even though I've done the super-deep cleanout of the registry, deleted all Google folders, downloaded v. 5.2 and selected the box to allow use by multiple logins. Please fix this!!!

I, too, am having this problem.  Google Earth (v 5.2.1.1329 (beta)) runs great when launched from an administrator account, but fails with the utterly unhelpful message "Google Earth has encountered a problem and needs to close." etc. when launched from a non-admin account.  My laptop is running XP SP3.

I have uninstalled GE, deep-cleaned the registry and the file system, including the Application Data and Local Settings\Application Data folders, removing all traces of Google products, then re-installed GE and had the same problem.

Next I tried changing the non-admin account to an administrator account, then logged into the formerly non-admin account and voilà!  GE runs under that account.  So I then exited GE, changed the account back to non-admin and... GE fails again, exactly the same as before.

It is quite apparent to me that Google Earth cannot handle running under a non-admin account, even under XP.  I imagine Vista and W7 users are probably seeing the same problem in spades.

This really, really, REALLY needs to get fixed.  Obviously a lot of users (or rather, former users) are getting this problem.  I cannot understand how Google could release a product with this basic a bug in it.  If they want to hire some product testers, I'm in the bay area and available.

For what it's worth, I just downloaded Google Earth v4.2.0205.5730 from a non-Google but reputable download site, installed and ran it, and got the exact same problem I got with v5.2.1.1329 (beta) above (the error dialog looks slightly different, but the message is virtually identical).  So the problem does not seem to be limited to the 5.2 version of GE.  Just thought I'd include that info in case it might help someone.

This is a fairly new computer (despite having XP on it) and is not loaded down with years of crap installed on it.  I do not know what GE might be conflicting with.  It runs just fine so long as the account I'm logged into has admin privileges.

Right now, I simply have been able to find no way to run Google Earth on this computer under a non-admin account.  This is a semi-public use computer, and I am not going to grant admin privileges to all users.  If Google cannot or will not fix this problem, Google Earth is virtually worthless to me.  (I know it's free, and therefore worth exactly what I paid for it, but come on... why give away a free program at all if you don't care whether people are able to use it or not?)

For my part, I installed version 4.2 like recommended by Suckered mug but the only difference is it forced me to upgrade. No other way out. When I reached the google earth download page, I choose personnalized and selected version 5.1 instead of the automatic 5.2.
I don't know why but it worked. Hope this is of help to anyone.

Google Earth is free, very good when it works, but often not up to date often goes wrong and needs to be installed again. When I was a paid subscriber I had no problems.

Have you tried this:

Update your direct X then go to Start > Programs > Google Earth > Set Google Earth Direct X mode. Select the Direct X mode then try it.

This worked for me!

I am on one PC that can logon to two domains. It runs fine on one domain but not the other.  No event ID entries. Hmmm.

Try uninstalling Google Chrome. It worked for me.

Downloaded GE 5.2 and went clicking on icon I would get a black screen, which quickly disappeared and I was back with my regular screen. After months of fiddling around around downloading/installing/uninstalling GE 5.2, plus going through all the fixes recommended on the help page I finally got it working.

First go to your Control panel/Display/Settings. Change settings to "(Highest) 32 bit."

Click Ok and exit Display and control panel

If you haven't installed GE 5 already, do so. Once installed right click on GE Icon.
Next click on Compatibility
---- Under Compatibility heading - de-select " Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
---- Next under Display Setting heading - de-select "Run in 256 colors." Make sure the other two options are also de-selected.
---- Under Input settings de-select "Turn off advanced text services for this program" if it is selected.

Click Apply.
Click Ok

Click on GE icon and program should start.

I tried LJB007's suggestions but they didn't seem to help, but then I went to Windows XP's "Start" menu, then up to "Programs" and "Google Earth" and started it using "Start Google Earth in DirectX mode" and then I got it to work. I hope that helps.

I'll be.....I've been just enduring GE 5 not working on my XP Pro machine for many months.  I've had to rely on a nearby Vista to run .kmz files that were sent to me until I tried "werigg's" (from 10/12/09) simple solution.  That's amazing, I would have never thought it would make any difference.  GE 5 runs great now.  Thanks!

I've been using GE for about 5 years now....never a problem.

Today I decided that my XP SP3 system a bit long in the tooth, so I've just done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate, and guess what? Now I'm getting the "could not start in DirectX mode" messages when I try to run GE. I followed the link with the error message and fmade sure I was using the latest DirectX (11), tried using Windows Install Clean Up to remove all GE bits and pieces, and reinstalling it. In fact I've tried most of the suggestions in this thread, but all to no avail.

An empty machine with a clean windows install, clean GE install (v6.1.7600.0), clean DirectX install... what could be simpler?

I note that the first references to this problem were back in 2005. It seems incredible that it's still happening.

I have been frustrated all day by this problem. I have followed every bit of advice that I could find in many fora, including this one. I finally uninstalled it, installed it, closed the computer and rebooted and it worked.

Just seen that someone else found success with this a while ago.  Sorry to be repetitive.

I had the same problem too. I edited the registry and removed all keys I could find related to google earth (after uninstalling the application). Then I re-installed it and it works just fine. Hope this helps. Note: always be very careful when editing the registry - a backup before you start is a must.

My problem has been with the Google Earth Plugin. Google Earth is working fine. When I put the plugin code into my own web page (code provided by Google by the way) I see it loading, then I get a black background and the Terms of Use link at the bottom of the viewer - no earth globe whatsoever. I've done everything under the sun today to fix this. I've uninstalled, removed Registry keys (used a registry cleaner utility), removed file system folders, rebooted and re-installed at least three times so far. Nothing works. I use the same code on other boxes and it works just fine. The box I'm having the problems with has XP Pro and GE 6.1.0.5001. I even uninstalled Google Desktop and Google Chrome - I attempted to rid all traces of Google on the machine. None of that has worked concerning the plugin. I've tried the plugin on Firefox and Chrome - same behavior, black background, no globe. I've pretty much had it.

I am having the same problem with Google Earth on Ubuntu with everything up to date and I do get the splash screen that says google earth after install and run but then nothing happens....  My system exceeds the Google Earth requirement as well.  Newest Stable Version for 32 bit.  Nothing?
