Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Steve Orosz 04/11/13 17:49
Hi,
Starting today (11/4/13) Google Drive appears to be crashing Finder.  Until today, Drive was working fine.  The symptom starts whenever I have a full screen application.  About once a minute, the screen switches to the Desktop.  I can swipe back to my working application but the problem repeats.  The problem seems to go away when I disable syncing.  Below are my log files.  Any help would be appreciated.

Steve

Same here, finder crashing every minute or so, disable syncing didn't help, I had to quit google drive, then no more finder crashes.

Ditto.  It didn't happen when I first installed mavericks... just started today, oddly enough.   Was there an update?

Closing out Google Drive stops the madness.

Bad google!

Looks like someone identified a possible cause or symptom of the problem in another thread.
Thread:  http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/drive/NuWiqvElwMA/x38hXHYkO68J

Disabling the "Show file sync status icon and right click menu" seems to resolve the error", in the Google Drive preferences.  See above link for instructions.

I've been able to reproduce the problem by toggling this option on and off.  I can reliably repeat the problem.  I've been running now for about 10 minutes with this option disabled and the problem has disappeared.  No clue why this fixes it but it does.

A few seconds after I re-enable this option, the error occurs and I get the following in my console log:

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Mike Levy 05/11/13 05:16
I have the same issue.  I was getting worried I was going to have to reload my OS.  I systematically closed apps, and even did a reboot.  Then I found if I closed Drive it would stop the crashing.  I reloaded Drive (another heartburn moment) with no change in behavior.  Somehow the setting suggested has been changed automatically and my system is now working normally.

The Google Drive version is the same as it was on Oct. 26. Some people on the Apple forums said they got an iBooks update just before they started seeing this but I don't recall the same.  As others said, Drive has been working fine since the Mavericks update, now it's crashing Finder.  Something changed, was it Google or Apple?

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Davi Santaella 05/11/13 05:21
Seems that Apple is already aware of the problem and that it has to do with the latest iBook update - users didn't have this problem before the latest update. As far as I've read, the only work-around is to shutdown the Google Drive application - it has worked on my machine (a PB 15" i7). Once GD is down, Finder starts running normally again.

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Sv_Nikdo 05/11/13 07:31
Well I have been tracking this issue on another thread which goes back two years. Google drive has been crashing finder for that long, perhaps for different reasons, but seems the Google minions/gremlins have created a new topic and sent out email stating that they are closing the more active one for the is a duplicate (that they created).

The solution in the other thread was to turn off  "Show file sync status icons and right click menu". That cures the crashing. At least it did before Mavericks.

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Christine Holzmann 05/11/13 07:36
Here's what I had just written a few moments ago in the other thread: This started happening to me too today. I am also running Mavericks (clean install) and things have been working fine with Google Drive. BUT a few moments ago I suddenly get a Google Drive message out of the blue stating "Google drive will need your permission to enable finder integration features" so I clicked okay, entered my password and suddenly my finder starts crashing like crazy! After disabling the "Show file sync status icons..." as per Todd's instructions, all was well again. SO this is definitely a bug with Google Drive as I had ZERO finder issues before this little Google message popped up this morning. There must have been a Google Drive update or something to that effect as I already had Google Drive installed on my machine.

A user on the Apple boards also reported that quitting and restarting Google Drive seemed to help his issue. I am now going to try that since my Finder just crashed again even tho' I had disabled the "Show file sync status icons". Here is the Apple discussion if you wish to read more: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5227942?start=15&tstart=0

Started happening for me last night as well. Apple support had not seen this issue before. Told me to backup, then reformat and reinstall on my HD. Should I not do this?
Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] bhive01 05/11/13 07:47
If it's the same issue the rest of us are seeing just disable the "Show file sync..." in the Preferences for Google Drive and go about your business. There is no reason to reformat... that is huge overkill for a small bug like this.
Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Christine Holzmann 05/11/13 07:50
You definitely don't need to do this. I just did a clean install this week. My problem only started today *immediately* after I received a Google Drive notification ""Google drive will need your permission to enable finder integration features". Once I clicked okay and entered my password the finder crashing started. I have since quit Google Drive and all is well.

Hi.
Running Mavericks since 11/04. I deleted Google drive app and reloaded it. Logged on, but getting a sync error on files that have previously had no issue with sync. Also, Google drive app brings up the beach ball for more than a minute before it opens the app.
Thanks

This seemed to work for me for a few days, but this weekend the problem reappeared. Quitting Google Drive solved it; disabling the sync icons had no effect this time. Could it be related to a new issue created by one of the Mavericks updates released recently?
Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Dirk Schlossmacher 15/11/13 00:54
For me it doesn't solve the issue:
1. OS X Mavericks 10.9 installed
2. Google Drive Sync App 1.12.5329.1887 installed
3. no sync status symbols next to files in Finder, nor right-click-option "Google Drive" in Finder
4. disabled Settings/Show Sync Status...
5. restart Mac
6. launch Google Drive App and let it connect and sync
7. enabled Settings/Show Sync Status...
8. check in Finder: PROBLEM in 3. still persists...

PLEASE HELP!

Thank you

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Daniel J. Schneider 15/11/13 08:51
So what seems to have worked now is: downloaded latest .app from Google and installed it on top of the existing one. Disabled 'Show sync' as a precaution. Seems stable after ~36 hours.
Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Dirk Schlossmacher 15/11/13 08:57
Mmh. Have tried to download the latest app (being the same as installed version) and install it anyways.
But the result is not different from before.
What do you mean with "stable after 36h"?
Do I have to wait that long until right-click options and symbols return?
When to I enable the setting again?

Thank you for clarifying...

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Daniel J. Schneider 15/11/13 09:05
Yeah, was the same version for me, too. Don't know why it could make a difference, but sometimes it seems to. Your problem may be different, or mine may resurface...

By 'stable after 36h' I mean that Finder hasn't crashed for about 36 hours. As I said, I turned the symbols off immediately as a precaution and haven't turned them back on. At this point I'm a little gun-shy with regard to that setting, so I may just learn to live without it...

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] omatix 15/11/13 11:01
Your problem, of not having a contextual menu or icon overlays, is not the same as Google Drive crashing the Finder. This is not the appropriate thread to get help for your issue.

The problem initially discussed in this thread appears for most people to have been fixed by the latest update (version 1.12.5329.1887).

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Dirk Schlossmacher 16/11/13 00:53
True, I have no Finder crashing.
But this is the only thread I found which mentioned the problem of lacking symbols and context menu.
And definitively: the latest app version does NOT fix it for me.

Did you come across a better thread for above issue?

Thank you!

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Justin Rolfe-Redding 11/12/13 20:25
I just started encountering this issue (crashing finder) today.  Disabling 'Show sync' resolves it, but of course now I've lost that functionality in Google Drive.

Have restarted Drive multiple times. Running Version 1.12.5329.1887, which appears to be the most recent. Macbook 4,1 OS 10.6.8.

Sounds like others are still experiencing the bug. Any word on when a more comprehensive fix will be available?

Hi dschlosss

We just released a new version (1.13) that partially fixes this problem in two Finder views (the other two are being worked on) for OSX 10.9.  Unfortunately, this happens because of Finder changes by Apple.  You should at least be able to get back to normal for the most part with the latest release.  This is a separate issue then Finder just crashing on versions prior to Mavericks.  For that issue I'll contact a few of you who have expressed interested in running an alpha that hopefully alleviates this issue.

Hi RishiS

From where can we get 1.13, the std download link on GD still points to 1.12....1887

What about my reported issue on:

> Since weeks my Mac dosesn't show google drive synch icons nor context menu options for google drive anymore. (10.9 Mavericks)

Could this be resolved with 1.13, or are you still working on both issues?

I'am not affected by crashes, though.

Regards
Dirk

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Justin Rolfe-Redding 13/12/13 10:30
Rishi,

Thanks for rushing out 1.13

I just installed it (Version 1.13.5782.0599) and am still experiencing the Finder crashes so long as I have "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" preference checked. I've been using 'list view' in the Finder.

Incidentally, like Dirk, Schlossmacher, even with that preference checked, I have noticed recently (past week?) that I don't see the sync icons anyway.

Thanks for your ongoing work on this.

-Justin

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Justin Rolfe-Redding 13/12/13 10:37
Also getting the crashes in 'icon view' and "column view' in Finder. The Google Drive app seems to be switching off the "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" preference on its own in, too (it was doing that in 1.12), and I've also been experiencing no response sometimes when I try to click "Preferences from the Google Drive Menu bar dropdown list (in which case I have to restart GD). Not sure if these other two phenomena are related at all to the issue.

Hi Justin,

The 1.13 version only re-enables finder icons for OS X 10.9 Mavericks (for those who do not experience the Finder crashes).  It does not fix the Finder crashes you may be experiencing.  I'll touch base with you next week on that and most likely send you an alpha build to help debug that specific issue.  Apologies for the confusion.

1.13 can be downloaded from the normal download page (https://tools.google.com/dlpage/drive).

Thank you!
This version now brings back the right-click and synch status feature, although I haven't seen any synch status icons yet on deeper levels of folders. May be I have to wait some time until the whole tree of 3 GB is verified?
Will report later.

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] Dirk Schlossmacher 13/12/13 23:02
OK, now I can describe the issue:
On OS X 10.9 with GD Build 1.13.5782.0599 the situation is as follows:

In Finder, synch status icons of files in Finder ...
- during icon view: are shown on all folder levels
- during list view: are NOT shown on any folder level, other than the top
- during column view: are shown ONLY for the folder level displayed in the left most column
- during cover flow view: are NOT shown on any folder level

Right-click features are everywhere.

It would be great if Google folks could fix the remaining issues above as well.

I have latest OS X and google drive and the same problem is happening on my computer (iMac 2012).
Worst, it make my computer crash after 10-15 apps swathing annoying.

Quitting google drive solve the problem.
I know that Google and Apple are just fitting on market.

Curious!

Hi -
Sorry to be redundant if you've already submitted a solution to the Finder crashes in Mavericks (my search didn't reveal one). I too am having the issue discussed at length –Finder crashes/restarts on OS X 10.9 with GD Build 1.13.5782.0599, resolved by either quitting GD or unchecking "Show Sync status icons and right click menu." In my case I do not get a right-click menu either ... however I had been getting that menu after the prior release ... it seems to have vanished. Has a new built that resolves the issues been released?
Thanks.

i am using google drive app version 1.13.5782.0559 on Mavericks osx 10.9 Started happing in the past few days to a week. even when i did not reinstall. and after a fresh reinstall still playing up.   yes disabling show file sync in the settings fixes this. Hope this helps.

definitely no need to reinstall the whole os. I think the mac tech would have not known about the google drive issue, tried some other fixes and suggested reinstalling osx as a last resort.

This is still happening for me, despite the update. It started after a reboot. I am running OS X 10.9, Google Drive version 1.13.5782.0599. A uninstall/reinstall did not help. Unchecking the file status icon preference does help, for now.

Hi.

For me, this problem only started occurring (at least noticeably) for me recently (Feb 2014).

The whole system becomes achingly slow, and Finder keeps crashing and restarting.  This is even though I only have about 4 files in my Google Drive.

Over February it seemed to get worse and worse, almost accelerating, to the point where Finder was crashing constantly, about 20 seconds after it managed to restart.

Mac OS X Version 10.9.1
Google Drive Version 1.14.6059.0644

After hearing it could be Dropbox or Google Drive, I paused them, and the problem stopped.  I gradually reactivated both, but with "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" off for Google Drive and the problem went away.

Andrew.

Hello,

Disabling "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" worked on the most of our computers. Thanks for the tip! But my laptop keeps rebooting when Drive starts up. I was able to delete Drive from the startup items via Safe Mode. So my laptop boots correct now. But every time I startup Drive the computer crashes immediately. So I'm not able to enter the menu to disable "Show file sync status icons and right click menu". I really need Drive on my laptop for my work. Google, HELP!

Today also my main computer (Mac Pro with OS X 10.6.8.) is having the same issues. I disabled the "Show file sync status icons and right click menu". That doesn't work either anymore.
On startup the computer crashes. So now I removed Drive in safe mode from my startup items... the computer works... but I still need Drive for my work! Please, help!

Version 1.14.6059.0644
Mavericks 10.9.2

Just started having this flickering issue today after replacing hard-drive and migrating old drive to new drive. First problem was Google Drive could not find and I could not reconnect the Google Drive folder even though I connected it to the original folder still would not work. Disconnected and reconnected. Re-sync'd files but it screwed with all my creation dates... really messed up my flies dates, etc..

Anyway... desktop icons and finder windows constantly reboot or go on and come back about ever 20-30 seconds. I clicked off the sync in preferences and this takes care of it. Oddly though I cannot re-open preferences after clicking the sync check-box on or off. Have to quit Google Drive and restart.

Interestingly enough never had this problem until today... even after upgrading to 10.9, 10.9.1, and 10.9.2 no problem.

Still having this issue with OSX 10.8.5 running Google Drive Version 1.14.6059.0644.

Have tried restarting the app w/ no success.

Only solution is to disable preference "Show file sync status icons and right click menu".

Any other information I can provide to get to the bottom of this?

OS Version: Mavericks 10.9.2

This problem appeared today.  Recent changes to my system include a hard-reset last night after system failed to come out of sleep mode.... (so, could be anything really)

Disabling "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" did temporarily cause the problem to stop.

Problem seems to have been solved by a complete uninstall and reinstall of G Drive.  This includes the main .app and accessory files under ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Drive

Finder problems with my MacBook Air continued for six months after I removed Google Drive. Today I finally solved the issues by completely deleted all plist files in the following folders (instructed by Apple technicians):
Clear all of these:
“~/Library/LaunchAgents”
“/Library/LaunchAgents”
"/Library/LaunchDaemons”
“/System/Library/StartupItems”
“/Library/StartupItems”
Probably the culprit was:  com.google.keystone.agent.plist but there were about ten other plist files that could have caused the problem.

Just opened a paid Google Drive account today and installed the app. Since then, the Finder has been crashing over and over at random intervals. I'm on OS X 10.9.2, so it doesn't appear that the Mavericks fix has worked.

Turning off the "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" seems like it may have worked (at least for now), but I want these features, so that isn't an acceptable fix.

Thanks for your help.

To solve this problem in Mavericks, I had to boot up in Safe Mode, then clear out all .plist files in the following folders.  I believe the culprit was com.google.keystone.agent.plist, but I removed over ten files.  This procedure was given to me by Apple technicians.

I am still having this issue after a restart, and it only started yesterday (28 APR 2014).

I believe the culprit may be that I recently installed Music Manager under a different account (my Google Drive is in my personal gmail account, and the Music Manager in my Google Apps for Business account for my company), and this might be an issue. When I have time later tonight I will do some more detailed testing.

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] aramis1250 30/04/14 13:14
Short answer: no. Drive continually re-starts the Finder even with Music Manager disabled and not running.

This is not the best answer. OSX 10.9.1 or 10.9.2 did not resolve it. The best answer is emptying out all plist files from startup folders, especially those related to Google drive.

I don't even use Google Drive on these computers anymore now. But the rest of our company still works with Drive, so I need it too. Google and/or Apple really needs to fix this problem asap! Or we're going back to Dropbox.

Hi all, I'm sorry to hear this is still an issue.

To fix this for now:
  1. Go to Preferences
  2. Click the Advanced tab
  3. Unselect the checkbox "Show file sync status icons and right click menu"
  4. If needed Quit and Restart Google Drive
I know this has been asked before, but for those of you who are experiencing this could you respond with answers to the following questions:
  1. What Finder version are you running (please note this is different than your OS X version)?
  2. What OS X version are you running?
  3. Do you have auto start on login enabled (i.e. does the application start automatically)?
  4. Are there any other applications that inject code into the Finder (i.e. services like DropBox, Box, Tortoise SVN, etc)?  Do any other applications show you overlay icons or right click menus in the Finder?  If so please let us know what they are so we can investigate any interactions with them.   If the answer is yes, does quiting those applications, restarting Finder, then restarting Google Drive solve the problem?
I appreciate your patience while we look into how to fix this.  We have been fixing this for a subset but it seems that there are multiple causes that manifest this bug.

Thanks and apologies for the inconvenience this has caused.

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] pugdogfan 04/05/14 01:50
Mac OS Finder has been crashing for me since Apple's Security Update 2014-002. I have unselected "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" and Finder is now stable.

Finder: 10.9.2
OS X: 10.9.2
Autostart is enabled.
I also have: DropBox and SkyDrive, but neither alter the right-click menu but are in the left pane of each Finder Window.

In the Console (when the check box is selected) I get messages such as:

Google Drive: Failed to send: -609
Google Drive: Failed to send: -600
Finder: find_shared_window: WID 698
Finder: CGSOrderWindowListWithGroups: invalid window ID (698)

I've re-downloaded and re-installed Google Drive but it made no difference.

I hope you get this fixed soon as it makes Finder un-usable.

Thanks.

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] lem0nayde 04/05/14 16:07
Turning off "Show file sync status..." did stop the crashing, though I really need to see those icons, so I'm looking for something more permanent.

Here's my details:
1.) OS X Finder v.10.9.2
2.) Mac OS 10.9.2
3.) Yes, autostart is enabled
4.) Dropbox. No, quitting Dropbox and restarting GDrive doesn't solve the issue. In fact, GDrive crashes the finder as soon as it starts back up. It continues to do so from there on.

It might also be worth nothing that I've never actually seen the icons on my Google Drive's folders. Unlike DropBox, they display as plain folders and files.

If it makes a difference, my Google Drive folder is stored on an external USB 3.0 hard drive.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi len0nayde,

Simply quitting Dropbox and restarting Google Drive wouldn't work since the code injection into Finder have already occurred.  Could you do this and report back:

1. Quit Dropbox, Google Drive and any other application running.
2. Relaunch Finder.  To do this here is a link.  Once Finder is restarted, start Google Drive.  Does the crashing still occur?

Hi RishiS,

Turning off "Show file sync status..." also didn't stop the crashing for me.
Neither did quitting every application, restarting the finder and starting Google Drive.

My Details
1. OS X Finder v. ? (where can I find this?)
2. Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
3. Autostart is off (had to go in safe mode to delete Drive from autostart, because finder kept crashing on startup)
4. Other then DropBox I don't know which programs I use that inject code into the Finder.

The error code I get on my MacBook Pro is: 26a6
On my Mac Pro the Finder just freezes until I reboot using the power switch.

Thanks.

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] ammbo 06/05/14 06:42
Hi Rishi,

I quit Drive, then force-restarted the finder. That made the finder work fine until I restarted Drive then it froze up again. I already have the folder sync status turned off.

Note that this only happens when the finder is in Cover Flow mode or when I try to preview files. It may be only specific file types but I have not tested this.

Could it be a file locking or permissions issue whereby Drive has access to the files and relinquishes access when the file is opened but has trouble in the case of a preview? Previewing in Finder does not open the files so Drive may not know to release the lock.

Disabling the "Show file sync status icon and right click menu" in the Google Drive preferences seems to resolve the error. Could there have been a mistake in a recent update?

Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] stopdriving 01/06/14 22:04
RishiS,

Thanks for helping solve this problem.

Firstly, in direct answer to your questions:

- Finder version 10.9.3
- OS X version 10.9.3
- I have tested both with auto-start on and off, including after a reboot and the issue appears to start as soon as Google Drive is launched (with the "Show file sync status icons and right click menu". option enabled) The issue appears to be completely independent of the auto-start option.
- I do have DropBox and attempted to test as recommended by exiting DropBox killing the finder process (using kill -9) and restarting Google Drive (with the "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" option enabled) - This had no effect.
- Google Drive 1.15.6556.8063

Some additional information that I think may be helpful:

- This problem started after I restored from a Time Machine backup that did not include my Google Drive directory.

- Google Drive would not recreate and rebuild the missing folder itself, nor would it try to rebuild the missing files if I created a folder in the correct location (~/Google Drive) - I had to disconnect my account and re-connect it - possibly needed to reinstall before Google Drive would function. (I don't remember honestly because I wasn't expecting this to become the investigation it has become)

- As mentioned previously, the problem can be easily duplicated any time Google Drive is enabled with the "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" option enabled.  ~/Library/Logs will show new .crash reports every few minutes while Google Drive is running with the "Show file sync status icons and right click menu"

- I tried to remove ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Drive while the Google Drive.app was closed and deleted and this did not resolve the issue

Just to throw out a hypothesis: I think I recall having to give sudo rights during initial install to allow the "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" functions to get injected into the finder - is it possible that this permission is no longer granted after the restoration (or in other's cases after the upgrade to a new OS X version) and when Google Drive attempts to leverage the function it is causing the crash?

I've attached the .crash report from my test with DropBox closed and finder restarted.

About Finder states Finder version 10.9.4

> What OS X version are you running?

10.9.4

> Do you have auto start on login enabled (i.e. does the application start automatically)?

Yes

> Are there any other applications that inject code into the Finder (i.e. services like DropBox, Box, Tortoise SVN, etc)?

DropBox was there previously and it still starts and works, but the Finder injections of DropBox also seem to no longer work, although they don't seem to be crashing finder as the finder crashes disappear when Google Drive is quit. But I suspect these two problems might have the same reason, just that the code of DropBox and Google Drive reacts differently to whatever the underlying issue really is

> Do any other applications show you overlay icons or right click menus in the Finder?

see above

>  If so please let us know what they are so we can investigate any interactions with them.

see above

> If the answer is yes, does quiting those applications, restarting Finder, then restarting Google Drive solve the problem?

No. I shut down Dropbox, killed finder, then started only Google Drive, but not Dropbox and the problem occurred.

The same happened to me. Just out of the blue the finder would quit --blank desktop--  and reappear every minute or more often in Mountain Lion. I found the tip of Google Drive being the cause, so I quit it, and it was fixed. I rebooted and started Google Drive again, and the problem reappeared. I appear to have now fixed it by deleting the application Google Drive with all its associated files using AppCleaner (can use AppZapper too), rebooting, and finally reinstalling Google Drive.

For what it's worth, I have the GDrive app running on 2 Macs, both on the latest version of OS X Mavericks, and it works FINE even with the sync status icons displayed.

Now, both have had the OS and Drive app reinstalled (SSD upgrades) since the fix was implemented.  The only time I had to re-download everything was when I did the initial sync after the drive installation.

Using a Macbook Pro 9,2 with OS 10.9.5. The Finder-crashing-issue fell down upon me when I switched my Seagate Momentus XT ssdhd to a OCZ-AGILITY4 ssd. Used the fix "turning off Google drive sync". Worked. But I must have the GD, so I went back to the ssdhd. Works fine and no Finder crashes any more. The ssd is a clone of the sshd, so their contents are identical. Why is the ssd giving me this problem?
Re: Google Drive Crashing Finder (Error -609) [OS X 10.9] jakesavin 23/10/14 12:18
After the 10.9.5 update from Apple, this issue is happening again.

Unchecking "Show file sync status icons and right click menu" in Google Drive advanced preferences causes the crashes to stop, but obviously now I can't see sync status by looking at Finder icons.

This issue needs to be fixed in a way that won't cause it to recur when Apple releases system updates. It would be preferable if Google Drive just didn't try to hook into Finder icons, rather than crash every minute.

The crashes may have caused further instabilities including possibly corrupting my Spotlight and/or Font caches, and I've now spent the better part of the morning investigating, clearing out caches, and searching the web to try to nail down the root cause.

My system is now stable again, but at this point it's next to impossible to tell whether the freezes I was experiencing were related to Google Drive and Finder crashes, or something else entirely.

Please fix!

Is there anyone who did an upgrade from 10.9 to 10.10?
I would like to know if the problem still exists in Yosemite, because the Finder in 10.10 has been unbugged alot.

For me it works on 10.10 but it was also working with 10.9.5.. I last seen bug in 10.9.3, and sicne the 10.9.4 update it never happened.

So if you are lucky... then it may work :)

One note is that it haven't updated for yosemite yet so expect an ugly folder icon and don't use the dark menu bar ;)

Mine was working fine in 10.9.5, still not causing Finder crashes in 10.10.  I don't see the sync status icons but I don't really have much use for those, I can always look at the icon in the menu bar to see if it's still syncing.

I just started having this issue today, after first mistakenly starting my computer without my thumb drive(and therefore my google drive folder) plugged in.  Problem goes away when I quit Drive, and comes back when I relaunch it.  I'm running 10.9.5.  Help would be much appreciated.

You may be able to fix this by doing the following:

1. Click the Google Drive icon in the menu bar, and choose Preferences...
2. Click the Advanced tab
3. Uncheck the box labeled "Show file sync status icons and right click menu"
4. Click the Apply Changes button

That worked for me. (You may need to also Quit and restart Google Drive.)

Thanks.  I had read that, but I was really hoping there was another fix, given that this issue is about a year old.

I figure I should mention that I updated to Yosemite and the flashing desktop issue went away.  However it looks like I still don't have the right click options.

Good Morning,

After a restore from Backup I saw the same issues. While dropbox worked, Google Drive made Finder crash. Since both applications do this more or elss the same way I tried to figure out why. For me the following command fixed the issue

sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force

I closed google Drive prior to issuing the command. After this mach_inject worked without any issues and I had my Icons back

Sorry I forgot the mention I also restarted the Finder, after the command finished just to be sure.

Wow... my icons aren't all back yet, but some are! And the crashing seemed to have stopped… (not holding my breath though ;-)

Now I'm wondering why Google never though about this in the last years this bug has been known. Clearly no priority.

It is still a workaround but at least it makes Google Drive work again. Hopefully Google can reproduce this now and fix it so it works regardless of an existing cache or not.
This also might explain why some people had the issue while others didn't. Normally the cache is there. If you restore from a backup or start in save mode the cache gets normally nuked BUT is not automatically rebuild. An update on the other hand also recreates the cache so it looks like that a newer version is fixing it, while all the update is doing is to trigger the creation of the cache.

Thank you, that worked for me. At last someone finds a real solution. Maybe you should work for Google, seems like they need a few more clever people.
