|i can't empty my trash||ThomasKleinMiddelink||1/14/09 1:11 AM|
I have a number of folders in my trash. When i click on Empty trash. the folders disapear. But when i refresh the page, or logout and login again my deleted items are back in my trash folder.
I'v got this problem for over two/three months now.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||1/14/09 11:34 AM|
Do the folders contain undeleted files? I think you may need to empty the folders (ala remove them as tags from files) before they'll go away. Also make sure you have cleared your cache before trying.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||ThomasKleinMiddelink||1/15/09 1:14 AM|
The folders doesn't contain any undeleted files. And doesn't have any colors or tags attached to them.
The strange thing is that when i want to undelete the files i get a server error. So the keep standing in the trash.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Chandler||1/16/09 9:10 AM|
Thanks for posting about this issue. Have you tried checking the box next to each folder and then emptying your trash? You may also want to try clearing your cache. That may help with this problem. If those suggestions don't work, let me know.
Thanks again for reporting this.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||ThomasKleinMiddelink||1/19/09 12:16 AM|
I have already tried to clear my cache and check the boxes in front of the folders but it didn't helped unfortunatly
I also have tried it on a different computer but even then when i refresh the page or logout and login the folders are back at there normal state.
Thanks for your effort!
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Marie||1/20/09 5:17 PM|
Thanks for your reply. What is the text of the server error that you receive?
|Re: i can't empty my trash||ThomasKleinMiddelink||1/20/09 11:38 PM|
When i click Empty Trash i get the message "Foldername has been deleted" (wich is not the case, the folders arn't gone).
When i click on Undelete i get the message "The server encountered an error. Please try again later."
|Re: i can't empty my trash||rickbaker58||1/21/09 7:56 AM|
I have the exact same problem. I have done everything that you have done and I still have two empty folders that I cannot remove from the trash. I also read of another person having the same problem. I keep watching for a possible solution.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Grzegorz||1/23/09 2:40 AM|
I also suffer from the very same issue. Zombie folders stuck in my Trash and I'm neither able to undelete them nor able to empty the Trash. Actually when I empty my Trash these folders disappear, but they come back as soon as I reload the page. Please solve.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Chandler||1/26/09 8:33 AM|
Thanks for posting about this issue. I wanted to let you all know that we're looking into this. I'll make sure to update the forum as soon as I have more information. Thanks again for reporting this.

Does anybody know what the status is of this bug?
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||2/7/09 3:17 PM|
I would really like a solution to this bug. It's driving me nuts not being able to delete items in my Google Docs. I have posted elsewhere on this. as well.

|Re: i can't empty my trash||ThomasKleinMiddelink||2/18/09 3:25 AM|
What is the status of this bug? I really want a solution to this bug!
|Re: i can't empty my trash||ColinScattergood||2/25/09 7:25 AM|
I've got the same issue...Any fix yet???
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||2/25/09 11:36 AM|
No, not a squeak.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||2/25/09 6:20 PM|
I posted this elsewhere, too, but hopefully it will generate a response of any kind from Google.
What the heck, Google? How is this supposed to be viewed as any sort of replacement to Office or for that matter as a tool that can be used day to day if bugs like this go ignored for weeks on end? I have been a huge proponent of Google Docs, but this is really turning me sour. I have documents not in folders I cannot delete and trash that I can't empty.
I can't see this as a tool that I would recommend to anyone at this point given this lack of attention to such basic functionality.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Chandler||2/26/09 10:11 AM|
I'm sorry for getting back to you all so late on this issue. We are still seeing reports of this problem and we're working to correct it. Can you tell me if you have better luck trying to delete documents one at a time?
Thank you all for following up on this, and for your patience.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||ThomasKleinMiddelink||2/26/09 12:04 PM|
no, i can't delete the folders/documents one at a time. I still get the message that everything went succesfull. When i refresh or login i see the folders/documents again.
I have an other question. Is it possible to delete all my trash information before you continue with the research? So i can use my trash like i used to be.
Good luck looking at the reports.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||3/7/09 5:30 PM|
is there any movement on this?? i cannot believe that i can't delete 13 PDFs from my google docs account. seriously, how can this be considered any sort of replacement for office or any other tool when basic functionality is being ignored.
it's been well over a week since any update from google. i would think that the office 14 online editions will not have this issue.
i am not trying to be inflammatory, but this seems like such a basic functinonality that i can't believe that it's not working.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||3/8/09 4:41 AM|
<< i can't believe that it's not working.>> I agree - the problem (well on of them) seems to be that no-one can work out under what conditions it's happening; thankfully most of us do not see it. I guess it is some combination of OS, browser, extension, country, language settings, internet provider,... and until the cause can be pinpointed it can't be fixed.
However, a message from Google to say they're on the case, and contacting you guys directly offline to gather evidence, would be a step forward.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||3/8/09 6:17 PM|
Agreed. I have had folders in my deleted items directory since Sept. 08 that I can't delete. I also have 13 PDFs in my "all docs" folder that can't get deleted. I have tried chrome, ie7, ie8, and firefox all on different networks and on Windows XP and Windows 7 and nothing works, so it's definitely something on the server side.
i just want to know that this is being worked on. It's ludicrous that some people are paying for this and you can't delete things.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||kkralian||3/11/09 5:00 PM|
I've only worked with google docs for a couple months, and in the first few days I managed to create a handful of zombie PDF files that can't be shared, deleted, moved, renamed, etc The only thing I can do is view them. I am the only owner of them, I've tried drag-and-drop operations, performing actions by selecting their checkbox's (one at a time and multiple), and tried right-click operations on them. Everything responds with a "The server encountered an error. Please try again later." (Actually, attempting to rename looks like it works, until you refresh the page and the original name returns). So, 50% of my files are permanently broken, and I can't organize or clean up anything. I dare not try to use this for anything serious.
I understand that Google may not know how to reproduce the cause of this problem, but I would expect their servers could at least periodically check the integrity of google doc files and repair them from time to time. (You know, make the "Please try again later" message mean something). Don't know what else to do... Create a new gmail account and salvage what I can?
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||3/14/09 10:04 AM|
I am giving up on Google Docs. This whole experience has been really poor. I am moving to use Mesh.com to keep documents in sync between systems and will have central access that way to documents. Google should stick to advertising and not try to create productivity apps if it doesn't intend on supporting them in any meaningful way.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Icewalker||3/16/09 9:08 AM|
i have the same bug. i tried several browser with different options (delete cache, cookies ....) and different operating systems.
there are any solutions?
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jc1||3/20/09 4:03 AM|
I have the very same problem since 2008, three empty folder always there in bin and you never can delete. Worse thing is I kept some private data in Doc. Not able to delete your file or data means google will have a copy of your private data FOREVER. The only thing I could do was to re-write file with "(*&^*(%$&*^)&))_" and leave files there. Wast a lot time to "clean" those files.
Give up trying in other computer and brwsers, did try many computers and broswers in office, none worked out!!
Better consider someplace else to store your file for this problem not solved you are putting yourself in danger.
Other than this, good email maybe the only thing worth staying.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Chandler||3/24/09 9:08 AM|
Thank you all for continuing to provide information on this issue. I understand this is frustrating and wanted to thank you all for your patience. I also have this issue with two folders, which remain in the Trash and which I cannot delete. Awaiting the solution. Thanks,
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Thomas_Work||4/1/09 4:09 AM|
Now i have another problem regarding this issue. When i make a new folder and delete this folder, the folder get spooked to. So all the items and folders created can't be deleted also.
Is it possible that the names of the folder are the creators of this problem? I use characters in foldernames like &, _ and ö.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||4/1/09 8:39 AM|
<<Is it possible that the names of the folder are the creators of this problem? I use characters in foldernames like &, _ and ö.>> Probably. Please try the experiment of making a folder that does NOT contain those characters, and see if you can delete that!
|Re: i can't empty my trash||goltho||4/1/09 2:38 PM|
I can tell you that my folders contain NO non-standard characters (i.e. "New folder", "Folder1", "abc" etc.) Makes no difference - will not delete.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||4/1/09 3:20 PM|
<<I can tell you that my folders contain NO non-standard characters>> So much for that theory then! Sorry, I'm baffled.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Azam||4/2/09 7:53 AM|
I suffer from the same problem i have folders that i cant empty from the bin
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||4/17/09 7:16 AM|
any word from Google on this?? still having the same problem. seriously, i would be happy if my docs account was just reset to empty.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Thomas_Work||4/20/09 1:42 AM|
No still no answer from Google.
I really liked Google Docs but with this support i question if online applications are the future.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||4/20/09 9:49 AM|
<<I really liked Google Docs but with this support i question if online applications are the future.>> Sad, isn't it?
|Re: i can't empty my trash||seheart||4/20/09 11:16 PM|
Having the same problem. Seems like a pretty basic feature. When I want to empty my trash, that means... zero it. I'm getting nothing and or "sever error". Come on Google.. I like my docs clean and having all this trash still being reported as part of my files is not making me happy! Thanks!
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Peter Harvey||4/23/09 1:53 AM|
I have the same problem - I cannot delete empty folders from the bin in Google Docs. Either they fail to delete, or if I do manage to delete them (which I have managed with some of the folders on one occasion) they return as soon as I refresh the page. Very annoying!
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||4/23/09 4:28 AM|
You are certain that the folders are themselves empty before trying to delete them?
|Re: i can't empty my trash||goltho||4/23/09 9:54 AM|
Are you kidding? This has been covered above. Yes, they are all empty. I think you can take it that several thousand of your users are all experiencing the same issue, and that a few have the time and energy to spend telling you about it, in the (steadily-diminishing) hope that you might address it and resolve it.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||4/23/09 10:05 AM|
Not my users, goltho, I'm just another user - but I entirely agree with your assessment of google's lack of support on this issue.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||goltho||4/23/09 10:09 AM|
Apologies - tar on the wrong brush. :-(
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||4/23/09 6:56 PM|
Does Google really support anything? Seriously. Everything is in Beta so they don't have to offer support. I posted this elsewhere, but imagine if you were a paying Google Apps customer and had to put up with this. It's insane. Everyone talks about how Google is going to take on Microsoft, but at least Microsoft can offer decent support.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||tazz_ben||4/29/09 10:31 AM|
I'm having the same problem. I don't even have folders in the list, just a list of docs.

Dear Chandler, could you please remove the folders from my account. I am getting crazy.
Thanks in advance!
|Re: i can't empty my trash||kkralian||5/9/09 1:10 AM|
Just wanted to say "great progress" on this issue over the last year. Everything is still broken, it hasn't been resolved for anybody, and I've just given up doing anything else with it, as the few files I have are all jammed up. Not sure how many months the server wants me to wait before I "try again", but whether you call it beta or not, Google Docs obviously isn't ready for prime time - not even for a casual home user.
The longer you take to address such serious problems, the more people will go searching for solutions somewhere else. I've ended up searching for alternatives, and MS Office Live workspace (beta) has been pretty solid. And if there was to be some fundamental problem like this, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't leave it there for a year.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||5/9/09 5:55 PM|
I have to agree with kkralian. Google service is really poor. We are relegated to posting to this message board that is clearly not monitored? This is really poor. But hey, the future of computing is in the cloud.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Danp321||5/23/09 7:09 PM|
I have this folder problem too. Two folders (more than 2 months old--I don't know how they got there) named "New Folder" are in my trash, and I can't empty them from the trash. There are no files in the folders. I can't move them out of trash, either. This causes me to have to individually select files that I DO want to remove from trash to get them out.

|Re: i can't empty my trash||bcubiaco||5/26/09 11:05 AM|
I made the terrible mistake to follow Google's advice to switch most of my bigger notes from Google Notebook to Google Docs. Now I have two files 'stuck' which I can neither delete nor move, even rename! One interesting thing I noticed was that the name of those two files start with a '~' (tilde). All the other files with regular names are deleteable, renameable and everythingeable. Oh, and I can't empty my trash also. Which has a file with a tilde in its name. Hope this helps.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Danp321||5/28/09 10:31 AM|
This is getting incrementally worse. Now in addition to my folders which I can't get out of trash, I have a document I can't even send to trash, rename, edit, or anything. Please, Google, address it before it spreads and becomes a bigger mess.

|Re: i can't empty my trash||Danp321||5/28/09 10:39 AM|
Well, they do have a developer conference going on, where their own developers are interacting with several thousand programmers who are attending. As a programmer myself, I can understand that sometimes you just have too much to do to get it done all at once. I'm hoping that next week this can get some attention, because I also know that the longer data gets out of whack, the harder it is to fix it when you get around to it.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jovina||5/29/09 3:42 PM|
I cannot delete files in the the trash at all. I have cleared the cache and tried checking the boxes but when I tried to delete files in trash I get a server error message. I can delete them from folders but not the trash.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||all_thieves_day||5/30/09 1:21 PM|
So I had 5 google docs, which I would delete from the "all items tab" but then they would still be present in other tabs ("opened by me", "owned by me", "items not in folders", & "items by type: Documents" even after I deleted them from the trash. Well, I tried (1) log-in and switching to "https" instead of "http" (2) selecting only one of the documents I wanted to delete, (3) then deleting that one document from every tab in which it appeared and finally (4) emptying the trash of that one document. (5) I repeated steps 2-4 for each of the other documents individually and (6) logged out. Guess what??? The old documents still came back. I even started with an empty trash can, have tried both IE and Safari and nothing seems to work. Just because Google has seemingly unlimited storage space, that doesn't mean I want to use it all.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jovina||5/31/09 12:23 PM|
I am finding that also. I delete a file and it comes back the next day to the active file. I still cannot empty the trash.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Thomas_Work||6/10/09 2:34 AM|
Dear Google, Chandler,
is there any improvement regarding this issue?
We are waiting for over 6 months now for an solution.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Gill||6/10/09 11:53 AM|
Do the undeletable files have slashes or other non-alphabetic characters in their names? If so try changing the name to something simpler and try again.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||6/10/09 2:44 PM|
Tried that a long time ago and no bones. This has got to be the single most irritating software bug I have ever encountered as Google seems to not pay attention at all to these boards or bugs reported. At least Microsoft pretends to care.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||Danp321||6/10/09 5:15 PM|
Nothing works. And I've tried everything I can think of, including holding my tongue out of one side of my mouth, and then the other.
|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||6/10/09 6:07 PM|
i actually prayed to st. isadore of seville (the patron saint of the internet) on this one. :) doesn't seem to have helped.

|Re: i can't empty my trash||jeff_small||7/22/09 10:04 AM|

|Re: i can't empty my trash||simpsonmedia||12/5/09 4:44 PM|
I've got the same problem as well, and it has been driving me absolutely nuts. I've scoured the boards and threads and it looks like VERY little attention has been given to this huge bug.
To the Google employees that periodically (rarely) comment in this thread - please give us more than, "thanks for your patience, we're working on it". There's a degree of condescension in such a curt comment and it shows us zero regard as users who are diligently attempting to utilize your products. Tell us exactly what you're doing to fix this...
This is unacceptable. You've built a product and marketed it as a viable alternative to MS Office, yet it's failing at the most basic of functions. Fix it...
|Re: i can't empty my trash||simpsonmedia||1/9/10 3:56 PM|
I am still battling with this incredibly frustrating bug. I have tried every possible way to remove the folder that was shared to me and it's been unsuccessful. I've posted on numerous threads and articulated the exact problem as thoroughly as possible. Google has not responded with the slightest bit of halp or advice.
All I want to do is remove a folder... That's it.
I've read dozens upon dozens of posts on this subject and it doesn't appear that anyone at Google is actually listening. Please fix this... PLEASE!
|Re: i can't empty my trash||simpsonmedia||1/9/10 3:58 PM|
@jeff_small what update was it that resolved this issue for you? As far as I know, I'm using the latest, greatest (ha) version of Docs. Am I missing something?
Since getting any type of response from Google is laughable, your feedback is greatly appreciated. And thanks for being so vocal on this board, as I certainly share in the frustration you've experienced...
|Re: i can't empty my trash||smegill||5/25/10 6:28 PM|
You'll be happy to know that more than a year and a half later... this bug is still out there. I can't delete anything in my trash folder. I get a server error when I try to empty my trash. Oh and I'm a paying Docs customer. For the moment...
|Re: i can't empty my trash||manmohandev||7/12/10 2:17 PM|
I have more than a thousand documents in my Google Docs BIN. I keep pressing "empty bin" and google keeps telling me that its done the job.. However, every single time I search for one of the files that were in the bin and should have been deleted/expunged by now.. the file shows up!
not just that.. i can then trace the file to its folder and this one to its parent folder.. oddly enough.. the superior folder is still shown listed under the BIN folder.. even when the "empty bin2 task just told me that its emptied the bin!!!
I have been at this for the past three hours.. I have tried with http:// and https:// access.. also tried three browsers (after clearing cache and all).. still the same issue persists..
Does anyone know how the bin can be automatically emptied??? is there any powerful godly admin here who can wave their magic wand (read fingers) to empty my google dic bin please?
I am in desperate need of space and the bin is hogging about 20 GBs or more !
I AM A PAYING CUSTOMER AND THE LEAST GOOGLE CAN DO IS HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM THAT WORKS! (that is if they are unable to have a docs system that works !) atleast let me know where I can apply for a refund ! seriously.
