|How do I change ownership in Google Docs?||Magic12||7/25/11 9:48 PM|
I use Word 7, Firefox 5.0.
In help, it says that in order to change ownership in the Google docs Document List, I should click on the "More Actions" drop down menu, and then on the "Change Owner" button. I assume that "Google docs Document List" means "Google Docs Home." When in that screen, I find no menu, drop down or otherwise, called "More Actions." I've opened "More Options" and all the other tabs on that screen but find no "Change Owner" button.
Help also says that when in the spreadsheet, one can change owners by clicking on "Share" then on the drop down menu to the right of the new owner. I only have one collaborator, she can edit, and I want to transfer ownership to her. The drop down menu next to her name does not have an "Is Owner" button.
What am I missing?

Warning: There can only be one owner at a time so you will lose ownership of the document. If you are the owner of the document:
1. Open the document from Google Docs Home
2. Click on File in the menu
3. Select Share on the menu
4. Either find or add the email address of the person you want to change ownership to
5. In the Change column, change the drop down box to Owner
6. Click the Save Changes button

I believe ownership can only be changed for 'docs', i.e. Google Docs documents/spreadsheets/presentations/drawings that were created in Google Docs or were the result of an upload+conversion.

Thanks for responding so quickly guys. Unfortunately, I still can't change ownership.
connect_me: I followed your suggested steps exactly. Still no "is owner" button on the drop down next to her name. Tried removing her from the collaborator list, then entering her email address.in "Add people". No "is owner" button on the drop down there. Clicked on "Share and Save". Still no "is owner" button in the drop down next to her name.
ahab: This is a spreadsheet that was uploaded and converted from an Excel file. It looks fine and edits perfectly, except for "change owner".
I think I must be missing something that must be done before clicking on "Share". Anybody else got an idea?

Are you using a Google Apps account, and is the user you want to share ownership of the spreadsheet to having an account outside that Google Apps domain? Ownership change outside a Google Apps domain is not allowed.

Thanks again for your help.
Honestly, I don't know what a Google Apps account is. I just log in to my home page, http://www.google.com/ig, and go from there to Firefox, where I call Google Docs - Home.
Is that a problem?

". I just log in to my home page, http://www.google.com/ig, [...]. Is that a problem?"
It should not be a problem.
Is the person you want to change ownership of the spreadsheet to using a non-gmail e-mail address?
If she has a non-Gmail e-mail address chances are her account is a Google Apps (sub-)account. And the same restriction I mentioned before will apply. Can you ask her if her account is one in Google Apps account?
B.t.w. did she already access the spreadsheet? I.e. does she actually have a Google Docs account activated?
|Re: How do I change ownership in Google Docs?||Magic12||7/27/11 11:05 AM|
I don't know the answer to either question. I think she has logged in, but I'm not sure. I have no idea whether she a Google Apps account. She's at @knology.net, whatever that is.
I've emailed her and asked her to answer both questions. I'll post when she does

I am having the same issue:
1) I am logged in to my Google account
2) I am owner of a form/spreadsheet doc
3) The person to whom I want to transfer ownership has a Google account; and has editor access already
4) I open the Share settings window, but the drop down menu does NOT include "Owner;"
it only has "Can Edit" and "Can View"

I think we're going to have to wait to have a Google employee respond to this issue. The steps I outlined earlier should work, as follows:
6. Click the Save Changes buttonI have no explanation for why the drop down menu does not include "Owner". You could check to see if the person you are trying to transfer ownership has a Google Docs account and has accessed the document, as previously suggested by ahab.
|Re: How do I change ownership in Google Docs?||Magic12||8/8/11 7:23 PM|
Ahab's post solved my problem. My collaborator did not have a Gmail (not Google) account and had not opened the spreadsheet. When she opened both, the problem went away. i.e. "Owner" appeared on the menu, and I was able to transfer ownership to her/

So your collaborator *had* to have a Gmail account to become a Google doc owner? Seems odd, not that I don't believe you, but I thought if you had a Google account with a non-Gmail account, you could own a Google document, or Google site, or whatever. The idea that Google products worked with non-Gmail accounts was a determining factor in my choice of Google sites and Google docs as a solution. Does anyone know if Google has something changed recently or was this always the case?
|Re: How do I change ownership in Google Docs?||ahab||8/9/11 1:44 AM|
I think that which was crucial was not the Gmail account, but the fact that the collaborator had not (yet) opened the spreadsheet. This may be one of those little workarounds Google Docs has added to sharing to help avoid changing ownership of docs to non-existing Google Docs accounts.By opening the spreadsheet existence of the account is confirmed to Google and thus ownership can be transferred.
(Personally I don't like the way ownership can be directly changed to collaborators. IMHO there should first be mutual consent on this before the ownership can be changed.)
|Re: How do I change ownership in Google Docs?||connect_me||8/9/11 4:08 AM|
Thanks for the clarification. I agree with your comment about mutual ownership but perhaps this is difficult to implement. Perhaps Google is working on the theory that ownership of documents and sites is fairly static.

" Perhaps Google is working on the theory that ownership of documents and sites is fairly static."
That may very well be so. But when ownership change only happens sporadic there should be even more safeguards against inadvertent use of this feature. Mutual agreement serves in this multiple purposes: both parties are aware of the intention of ownership change and both parties can check who the other party actually is before agreeing - or not agreeing to document ownership change.
As it is now it is enough to have become a collaborator (or I believe even viewer) to get ownership of a document thrown into one's lap,
|Re: How do I change ownership in Google Docs?||connect_me||8/9/11 9:37 AM|
ahab, I meant Google may see it as a lower priority for development, as ownership changes are less frequent. Your points are well taken.
|Re: How do I change ownership in Google Docs?||Magic12||8/9/11 1:47 PM|
And I believe that my collaborator was in fact a Google Apps user. Her email account certainly was. She said that she had a Google account, but still couldn't call up the spreadsheet, so that was probably it. And that's why opening a personal gmail account worked.solved the problem.
|Re: How do I change ownership in Google Docs?||ahab||8/9/11 9:44 PM|
"I believe that my collaborator was in fact a Google Apps user."
Ownership change between a personal account and a Google Apps account is currently not supported. That's why the Gmail associated account did work and the Apps one didn't.
