Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document evolreed 10/18/10 5:37 PM
I have been composing my document in Times New Roman font and 1.5 line spacing. When I view it in Print Preview it displays as Arial font, single spaced. Is there an issue with the Print Preview? I've never had this issue before and I use docs extensively.

What browser and OS are you using?

Did clearing your cache and cookies resolve the issue? You can quickly clear your cache by refreshing your browser while holding the Shift key.
If your question is about documents or spreadsheets, were you using the new version?

I'm pretty much having the exact same problem suddenly. I use docs all the time and this is the first time I've had this issue.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document keithjd 10/19/10 4:54 AM
I have the same problem.  Not just the preview though, also if you print or otherwise export to PDF.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Joe_M 10/19/10 5:15 AM
Same here.  Times New Roman is MIA in print preview, print, and PDF export.  It reverts to single-spaced Arial.  I'm not having this problem with other fonts.  Using Chrome on a Win XP desktop, and Chrome and Safari on a MacBook with Snow Leopard, all with the same result.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Joe_M 10/19/10 5:17 AM
And, yeah...  Using the new Google Docs version.  Have cleared the cache and cookies to no avail.

Hi Everyone,

We're looking into what might be causing the loss of formatting. I'll post back here when I have more news.

Best wishes,
Rebecca

This is quite frustrating
Using Chrome 6 on Windows 7 x64
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document tsquaredbooks 10/19/10 6:20 PM
I, too, have similar problems, but they are inconsistent.  Also having problems with page numbers in the "print settings"-- I recently only got a page number on the last page of my document. ARGH.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document MollyRose429 10/19/10 6:54 PM
Exact same thing's happening with me - spacing and font change in print preview. When I export to PDF it also applied a bold setting to the entire document even though I only have one emboldened heading...

<<We're looking into what might be causing the loss of formatting. I'll post back here when I have more news.>> Thanks Rebecca - please also note that people are seeing the font changed as well as hte line spacing, e.g. from Times to Arial. It does feel as if the pdf conversion=printing is well broken at present.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Rebecca 10/20/10 2:16 PM
Gill, duly noted. It does indeed seem to be tied to the conversion process, we're tracking down the exact cause.

We realize that this very frustrating and are working on getting this fixed as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Rebecca

wow pretty much screwed here....my whole business is shut down right now. HELP
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document AshleyMarie 10/21/10 1:35 PM
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing this formatting issue.  I use google docs PDF converter daily for work and this has really shut down my ability to do business today. Same issues as above, however it seems to be affecting all of the serif fonts I've tried. Using the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome and Safari on Mac OS X version 10.6.4
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document ZMP 10/21/10 1:46 PM
I've been using a workaround for this that has been working fine in most cases:

First I download to a .doc format which has been preserving all the formatting for me. Then I use the converter at http://www.doc2pdf.net/  to change to a pdf document. Some of the stuff doesn't convert 100% the same but it's better than nothing.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Rebecca 10/21/10 2:17 PM
Hi Tim,

Have you tried using the Download As option when you're in your document? If you save a file in .rtf you should be able to retain the formatting. At which point you can print that instead.  Let me know if this helps.

Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document olentangy 10/21/10 7:33 PM
I am having the same problem.  I have not had this problem before and use the PDF download often.  Is there a fix in the works?
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document jbishop.rwc 10/21/10 9:34 PM
Same problem here. My workaround was to copy and paste into another program (I will not mention which one) and print from there. But I do not have much fancy formatting.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document adace1 10/21/10 9:56 PM
The document I am typing is double spaced but it shows up as single spaced on print preview. Please get this resolved soon. Thank you.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Rebecca 10/22/10 7:04 AM
Hi Everyone,

We are still working on a fix for this. As ZMP mentioned, and in my earlier post, a current workaround is to use the "Download as" feature and export your document as .rtf or .doc. This should retain your formatting and you can print that document. We hope to have this resolved as soon as possible.

Best wishes,
Rebecca

Here is the issue, Google.  The problem was first posted on Monday.  A full week has gone by with no solution.  This has led us to use Microsoft Word.  If your product is unreliable and cannot be fixed in a timely fashion - which a week is not - we as consumers must go elsewhere.  I hope those working on it have not taken the weekend off, as your customers have not.  It is very frustrating!
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document timclarke9 10/25/10 12:55 AM
Rebecca -

rtf apparently is a Microsoft word format. I don't have MS Word. That is why I use Google Docs......I cant believe this hasnt been fixed yet. I guess I cant trust Google anymore. Printing is kind of a big deal when dealing with DOCS........
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document David Jurgens 10/25/10 1:32 AM
I'm having the same problem too.  Could we get an update on what the status of the fix is?
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Thomas P. 10/25/10 5:22 AM
Rebecca,
Printing & PDF problems are not limited to font issues. see below Ref.1

About the workarounds:
* RTF-format: I tried opening the downloaded RTF in both Wordpad and Word - and both had same problems: The Table-of-Content (GDocs generated from headers) did not get correctly exported (list item's bullet  choices was completely different from the original); Table cells with text (the text got white background, instead of being transparent - i.e. do. cell's colour), and more problems  ...
* DOC-format: Well, I don't have a lot of collaborators on my documents, and "everyone" in the world - has Microsoft Word (at the very least, Microsoft do provide free viewers for their Office file formats). So, reverting to Word isn't a bad idea - I'd bet Microsoft Live Office do provide proper support for their proprietary .DOC format. (did I forget to mention that Microsoft SkyDrive offers 25GB storage for free).

Rebecca: Is Google going to keep having GDocs Document around ?
Surely we can agree, that printing is one of thé most core functionalities of any word-processing application - and offering such an application, yet suddenly breaking printing, and having it broken for (so far) a week - is (to put it diplomatic) deeply concerning.

Personally speaking, - If there was a law against lying, then the phrase "The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth" would jail Google heads for untold truths.

Side-note, @All: Are there any lawyers amongst users here ?
If so, - Would a class action lawsuit against Google stand a fighting chance ?
Even though we all bought Google services "as is" for 0$00, then Google is the "big guy"  - so "caveat venditor"(seller beware) may apply.
* Ref. http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Buyer+beware
  >>...increased responsibilities have been placed upon the seller, and
  >>the doctrine of caveat venditor (Latin for "let the seller beware") has become more prevalent.

It would have been helpful if this showed up on the apps status dashboard. I would have known that Google was aware and working on the issue. Otherwise I have to go track down info.
My experience working with google docs leads me to believe this problem will be resolved as soon as possible.

Relax people!

This is a problem.  Shows lack of regression testing prior to deployment.  Demonstrates lack of reliability as a business tool.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document medoerksen 10/25/10 7:40 PM
Same problem happening. How can this be so hard to fix when it was working fine before?
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document nickym777 10/25/10 8:42 PM
Chill out, guys. If you'd rather not have Google, then don't use it. Until then, I'll be patiently waiting for printing to be back up and running, although I do agree that it would have been nice to know that Google was aware of the problem directly from Docs.

Good luck with the fix, Google!

The service is online/accessible, - this is an application functionality defect.
If Google were to issue alerts about all troubles in GDocs - you'd be flooded with messages.

Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document nbdave 10/26/10 3:06 AM
I'm so glad I found this post because I had no idea the fonts were unable to be exported at this time (I literally thought I was going crazy). I have been very happy with Google Documents although it would have been helpful to have this problem highlighted. Until it is resolved, I have had success doing the following:

Re: .rtf files: if you are using a Mac here is a roundabout way to get your pdf to print Times New Roman font.  Download the Google Doc as a .rtf file. Open this in Text Edit, then Save As Word 97. Make sure your formatting matches up (headers have been lost, and total length of document has been increased so 1 page becomes 2 pages with your last sentence on 2nd page. Argh!). Go to Print, then on you print menu select Save as PDF. Then save as pdf and your doc should be semi-okay. Hope this helps.

Hi folks,
Thank you for continuing to post. We're actively working on resolving this issue, and we apologize for the inconvenience. I'll follow up here if I have more to share.

Thanks,

Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document p.100 10/26/10 12:20 PM
I'm glad to find this forum because I have been having problems since early this month.

Most of the problems I encounter relate to my use of the Tab key to create columns. Everything lines up while I am working on it and then when I print it or view it on print preview all of my columns are off. Earlier this month (October 6th), I had to print a resume with everything flush left because while most of the tabs worked, a few would not get in line no matter what I did so I had to move everything left and apologize to the recipient that it looked odd.

I also don't understand why the right margin changes between what I am working on and the printed document.  I will work to get everything on one line and then when I print or go to print preview, suddenly it's off and there are now two lines.

Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document groveco 10/27/10 8:34 AM
Hey folks, you don't need MS Word to open RTF or DOC files. You can download Open Office for free, and it will open, edit and print in both of those formats. You can also export to PDF if that is what you need. Open Office is a mature software package with spreadsheet, word processing, presentations, etc.

Gotta love open source software. And it is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document consultapg33 10/28/10 3:26 PM
This is a big problem, I hoped it's fixed soon. Sure I can use MSWord or OpenOffice, I have both, but I like the idea of moving to an online workspace where I don't have to worry about taking up space on my computer between programs and documents. And Google is a great way to search back through my documents. But having to download a document onto my desktop and then open it in another program and then print it really beats the purpose doesn't it. It'd make more sense just to write the document in OpenOffice in the first place. So I'm glad to here the Google guys are working on it and I hope it has a quick fix, otherwise I'll just have to revert to Microsoft or OpenOffice again.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document consultapg33 10/28/10 3:28 PM
And especially considering that I do write some pretty important documents, it ain't nice to find these kinds of surprises! In any case I am a Google supporter and I do appreciate all the ideas they come up with, I hope this one can have a quick fix...
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document caboose960 10/30/10 3:31 PM
Here's what worked for me:
1. format your file however you want
2. then download the file as HTML
3. then open the file (it'll be zipped so you know...)
4. print the file
5. get a backup for printing things, google docs is web-based there are a lot of moving parts and it may die on you.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document allineizw 11/3/10 1:32 PM
A related problem: I have an image displayed in a Google spreadsheet (e.g. our company logo on an invoice). When I try to print or download this as a PDF, the image is nowhere to be found in the PDF. Has anyone else had this problem?
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Fwed 11/4/10 12:43 PM
Many people have responded in good faith that Google will quickly work on this issue.  It has now been over two weeks.    In computer time, that's a year.  If this is actively working on an issue, what would non-actively working on an issue be?  Just wondering...
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document rjelinek 11/4/10 2:42 PM
It's been working fine for me for about a week, at least with Times New Roman print preview and print to pdf.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Ms.Rowse 11/11/10 2:37 PM
I stumbled on this discussion, looking for a fix--it seems rather random.  In a class of 28 students, about half of my students' papers could be immediately printed for peer revision day, the other half I needed to fix spacing throughout the document in Word before printing.

Just now, I tried downloading a Google doc in every available format and the exact same issue persisted--random tabs in the middle of sentences, random single spacing amidst the double spaced document.  Just want it known that the issue still persists...
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Fwed 11/15/10 12:30 PM
The last word from Google - unless I'm missing something - is October 26th.  Am I missing something?
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document JohnnyCache 11/16/10 12:15 PM
Hi folks,

Just wanted to follow up on this thread -- this issue with respect to Print Preview not respecting fonts and line spacing should be fixed now. For more recent posters, are you still experiencing that problem with line spacing and fonts when you print preview your doc or export it to PDF?

If you're experiencing another issue, it may be helpful to post in a new thread so we can keep like issues organized together.

Thanks!
Johnny
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document darrenmauro99 11/16/10 9:31 PM
I'm still experiencing the font substitution issues in Chrome 7 Mac. My presentation uses Trebuchet and it all prints to PDF as Times New Roman.

Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Jdib79 11/18/10 9:08 AM
I am also having a problem with print preview not respecting font and spacing also it is missing inserted lines.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document gccheung 11/27/10 4:24 PM
I have the same problem, and I found out that it's caused by bulleted lists or numbered lists.  Print preview works fine for a document with no such lists.  Once I add just 1 bulleted item in the middle of the document, the line spacing in print preview goes away starting from the line where the bulleted item is.

Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document gccheung 11/28/10 3:35 PM
Have more info.  The print preview problem only occurs if I'm using "Add space after paragraph".  In the print preview, all the paragraphs after bulleted items lose their extra line space after each paragraph.  If the bulleted items are removed, the extra line space remain as they should.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Gill 11/29/10 6:33 AM
Thank you for those extra details, gccheung - something for the engineers to work on.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document Kevin.McE.Walsh 12/2/10 10:05 PM
My issue is similar to gccheung, and it only occurs between some paragraphs. I actually lost a point for this on a homework assignment. :) No worries, but now I export into MS Word before printing, which is annoying.

I'm using Chrome 7.0.517.44
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document JCLW 12/3/10 2:15 AM
Headers aren't appearing on all pages, only on the first page.
Re: Print Preview showing different font/spacing than actual document tommyboy97 12/10/10 10:03 AM
Molly - same problem w/me too!

Export to PDF it also applied a bold setting to the entire document even though I only have some bold headings.  Sometimes this happens on and off over past two weeks and I could usually try it again and it would work fine.

Today however, tried it many times, in Firefox and Chrome, even shutting down and restarting Adobe, and still has this problem.

Where is the PDF builder program?  Natively on the machine, or on Google's end?  Need to fix that or restart that tool.

Please help someone...big problem for us!

Hi folks,
Thanks again for all of the feedback -- as this thread is starting to focus on several different issues than the original posts, I'm going to close it out. I would encourage you, however, to post separate threads for each of these individual, specific issues you're having. That way we can focus on each one of them separately.

Thanks again,
Johnny
