I cannot copy/paste anything either within the document or just plain text from outside Google Docs into the Google Document.I can copy text from the Google Document. I have tried Firefox 3.6 and Chrome 22.214.171.1246 (41514) (I would so like Google to simplify their version numbering).
p.s. After reloading the document it started working again. It almost seems like somebody is playing with the system at Google

I have the same problem with firefox 3.6. It starts sometimes after firefox crashes. I started notice this in the last month and i have written alot of text the last month.

Can't paste stuff into google docs any more!!!!!
Am using firefox 3.6 but it doesn't work in chrome either!
As things stand google docs has suddenly become a huge pain in the arsze!
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||Gill||3/19/10 4:46 PM|
Log out and clear FF's cache/browsing history. Also disable Offline/Gears and consider disabling browser extensions. And use Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V for the copy-paste.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||vincible||3/19/10 6:46 PM|
I had this problem with firefox 3.5.8 - couldn't paste into a new document, but when I reopened the same saved document, paste worked again.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||dedlos||3/20/10 2:27 AM|
Thanks for the tips , Gill. Cleared the cache/ browsing stuff and still wasn't working. Then disabled latest plugin and restarted firefox and everything working again. Still working today even after enabling the plugin so fingers crossed. :)
vincible - pretty sure I did try this but will give it a go if same problems happens again. cheers.

the problem is I can't paste anything into google docs. not even from the same google doc.

I am having the same problem in Firefox 3.6.2, Chrome 126.96.36.1996 unknown (41514), and Chrome 5.0.342.8 beta. Works in IE 8.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||Roman R||3/26/10 10:58 PM|
But it's not copy/paste that doesn't work but only the pasting part.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||cmoir||3/27/10 8:44 AM|
Google made a change a few weeks ago to the way paste works. It looks as if there's a server hit happening. Ever since this change copy / paste has become unreliable, and stops working at random intervals. As others have pointed out reloading the document restores things. When it stops it can't even copy / paste within the same document. I'm using FF3.6
Now if only Google had some decent customer support mechanism for issues like this.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||Javier López||3/29/10 2:19 AM|
I deactivated FireBug in FireFox and it worked. I activated it again and it stopped to work. So I think they are related.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||Javier López||3/29/10 2:22 AM|
Ah, it also happens if Delicious Bookmars is activated in FireFox. So maybe is related to any FireFox complement.

|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||kurgbe||3/29/10 7:54 PM|
I have the same problem: cannot paste into Google doc anymore. But it works in Gmail.
It's a pity (a shame) that a bug for such basic function is not corrected immediately. And that Google has not a proper bug reporting mechanism.
If goolge does not solve these basic problems, people might go away from they browser centric applications.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||Gill||3/30/10 9:57 AM|
<<t's a pity (a shame) that a bug for such basic function is not corrected immediately. And that Google has not a proper bug reporting mechanism.>> Agreed 100%.
@nbeier - I think you're in the wrong forum - this one is for Docs, not gmail.
It is still worth clearing cache - that did solve this problem when it reared its ugly head for me last week

I'm getting the same problem. It makes Google Docs effectively useless for my purposes. I'm heavy on the copy/paste. Are there any alternatives out there?
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||bluantinoo||4/7/10 3:24 AM|
Same copy/paste problem with Firefox 3.6.3
if I logout form google, delete everythig from cache, cookie and history, then I deactivate every component and restart firefox, copy/paste works again.
Then I started to activate component one by one to understand wich one of them is causing the trouble.
I spent an hour trying to understand but it just seems to be random....
The problem is that copy/paste do not work even with Chrome... and for that i don't know what to do...
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||THisGuy7||4/7/10 9:07 AM|
I've had this problem many times in my different firefox's on 3 different pc's and a mac.
I solved it by pressing Ctrl-F5 (think that's the "clearing cache button")
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||JohnnyCache||4/7/10 10:59 AM|
Thanks for all of the feedback. A number have users have reported that clearing your cache and cookies can often fix this problem with copy and paste. You can find directions to do that at the bottom of the post.
In the meantime, please continue to post the issues you have, with your specific browser and desktop configurations. I'm taking a look into this, and I'll post back if I have an update to share.

|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||Roman R||4/7/10 12:59 PM|
Pressing Ctrl-F5 didn't help me. This feature continues to fail intermittently. Firefox 3.6.3.
Johnny Cache, the problem is not with "copy and paste" but only with "paste".
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||ducrion||4/8/10 4:52 AM|
I have encountered this bug for the first time today. Using Firefox 3.5.9 on WinXP (all updates and service packs installed). Sometimes reloading works, most of the time I have to clear cache and cookies. And even then it might work one moment, and then fail the next, literally.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||cmoir||4/10/10 12:17 PM|
OK this also happens with the latest version of Chrome 188.8.131.525 (42898) so this is not a Firefox related browser bug or issue, but a bug, pure and simple, in Google's Doc code. I find it unbelievable that a company trying to persuade people it's a serious software developer can ignore monster bugs like this. Poor product quality, and really, really poor customer service (as they have a growing reputation for it seems).
Clearing the cache does not fix it. Doing a reload does not work. Closing the document and opening it again does not work. (in Chrome at least). The only way to get it to work again seems to be to quit the browser completely, and restart.
What's more it's pretty obvious where the bug is - it started happening after Google made the change to server-based paste operations.
When is this going to get fixed?
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||kurgbe||4/10/10 3:15 PM|
<<What's more it's pretty obvious where the bug is - it started happening after Google made the change to server-based paste operations.>>
I agree. The two are most likely related since it is a major bug for a (normally) stable basic function.
I find the Google employee so cool about such a major bug. Instead of investigating the problem, he reports that << A number have users have reported that clearing your cache and cookies can often fix this problem with copy and paste>>. In French we call that "bricolage"
This bug shows the limit of Web applications (even Goolge cannot solve this bug!) or the limit of Google's commitment to their tools which do not generate enough revenue.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||munroj||4/13/10 3:46 AM|
It is important that the experiences, attempted "fix" procedures, version information, etc, keep on circulating to allow narrowing down the alternatives to get a fix.
I happen to be a staunch, usually-silent, supporter and user of Google software applications and searching. I welcome the enthusiasm and effectiveness of Google persons. It's impossible for me to find sympathy for those who rant against the "gifts of Google".
What is bad about revenue from advertising by companies who choose to inform persons who choose to be consumers? I happily choose to use Google!!
To the complainers, how about a refund of double (well, ok, triple!!!) what you paid for all these Google features and applications -- if you promise to carry out your threats and go back/away to Word or wherever?
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||JohnnyCache||4/13/10 8:30 AM|
Sorry that you're experiencing this issue. So I can do a bit of further investigating, can you guys give me some more specifics?
-How is paste failing? Does nothing happen, or are you seeing a "pasting..." message?
-Does paste fail with just keyboard shortcuts, or menus, or in both cases?
-For the folks using plug-ins, after you disable all of your plug-ins, does the problem go away?
-Is there a particular type of content that is failing such as HTML, or plain text?
I'm looking into this and will continue to report back as I learn more, but please continue to reply if you experience the issue.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||ducrion||4/13/10 8:32 AM|
-How is paste failing? Does nothing happen, or are you seeing a "pasting..." message?Nothing happens, not even seeing a "pasting..." message. Though in one instance, I saw a "pasting..." message in IE7 and right then, the browser crashed. I didn't have anything else open in IE, so it must've been the pasting attempt that caused the crash.
Keyboard shortcuts and right-click fail, as well as FF-menu Edit->Paste.
Nope, both failed, when I tried.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||nadworks||4/13/10 8:46 AM|
1. Nothing happens / none of the paste shortcuts, links etc work (not even the "edit" > "paste" command.
2. Doesn't work w/ or without plug-ins here
3. All content fails (single words, text passages... and from any application, incl. plain Notepad)
...using FF 3.6.3
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||tham||4/14/10 2:46 AM|
Google docs does not save my document.
I get a message to copy the content and paste the content in a new document.
BUT.... the copy paste function does not work either (and hundreds of people seen to complain about this on the forums)
Then I try to download the document in word or open office or rtf to safe a half days work
BUT... it cannot be downloaded because it was not saved.
A very interesting nesting of several CATCH-22's.
I was able to save most of it (losing the formatiing) by doing a copy paste to open office. Trying to copy paste did not work, because the figures/illustrations disappear in that process
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||ZacharyTP||4/14/10 5:01 AM|
Generally, copy and paste is working, but I can't copy and paste a photo/banner that I need to use on multiple docs, so i have to upload it every time. VERY ANNOYING.
Also, the new features are well and good, but there still is no box to "open hyperlinks in a new window" and now the web clipboard is gone.
Come on Google...you need to respond.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||Ed-Valhalah||4/14/10 2:44 PM|
I just upgraded to the New version of google docs spreadsheet. While it is a bit faster and has some nice new fuctionality, the cut/copy/paste functionality that had existed in the older version has been lost. I now cannot cut/copy/paste cells from excel 2007 into the google spreadsheet using the mouse right-click for copy/paste menu options. Now I can only copy/past via ctrl+c and ctrl+v. It seems that the Excel2007 clipboard data (loaded with mouse driven action) is not recognized by the google.doc clipboard.
Within google docs, the cut/copy/paste function works as expected when using ctrl+x, ctrl+c and ctrl+v. However, when using the mouse to cut/copy/paste it does not implement the desired action fully (e.g. cut-paste really behaves like a copy-paste)
I am using IE8 and Windows XP professional version 2002 sp3
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||Doxent||4/15/10 5:46 AM|
I have the same problem. I can copy anything and paste it into notepad but it does not paste into Google Docs. Nothing happens. 90% of the time it works but when its needed the most, it fails. No plugins in FF installed, system is XP pro. The same problem happens on Chrome. Also quite often it does not display any cursor so I dont know where to type. I can browse the content but without cursor.
Reloading browser can restore the cursor. Did not have such problems few months ago.

|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||TateFF||4/15/10 12:23 PM|
Help! I just spent most of the day creating a flow chart in the new Google drawing editor and now I have no way of getting in any presentation. Copy and past do not work AT ALL. I've cleared cache several time, but nothing happens. It appears the actual CTRL-C, CTRL-V commands next to the copy and paste in the menu may even be grayed out. So, I'm wondering if there is something I have to do to0 get this to work.
Using Chrome latest version. Does something have to be done to allow you to copy a drawing? How do I get it in a presentation?
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||nadworks||4/16/10 5:50 AM|
Figured out that disabling "FireBug" addon and restarting FireFox restores copy/past functionality in Google Docs.
As a web developer though, I am depending on FireBug, so am forced to constantly switch between disabling, restarting, enabling, restarting etc.
Not too cool, guys. Is there fix in sight?
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||canecut||4/16/10 6:09 AM|
My copy/paste is still not working in Chrome, and it is critical for my day to day, in tandem with my Android. I have had to copy text to another program, Notepad works fine, then recopy. It will then paste into a google doc. Good grief.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||JohnnyCache||4/16/10 8:39 AM|
Again, I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue. I'm still investigating, and I'll need to continue to reach out to some of you outside this thread to get some specific information that's probably best not shared in a public forum.
For those having problems with paste, other users are reporting that reloading, clearing cache, and turning off other plug-ins often does the trick. Please continue to try that, and I'll report back when I have more to share.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||arcdc||4/17/10 12:45 PM|
I created a Google Drawing and want to embed it in a Document. I used the Drawing Web Clipboard to copy the drawing. I then looked for a similar Web Clipboard button in the Document to do the pasting but could not find one.
So I go to plan B, went to the Drawing and did a Ctl-C, then went to the Document and did a Ctl-V. The Drawing was NOT pasted, instead the content that was previously stored in my clipboard was pasted in.
It appears to me that the Copy to the clipboard is not working properly and there is nothing to paste.
I am using Chrome 184.108.40.2065
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||LatheOfHeaven||4/18/10 12:35 AM|
Well, I KNOW that this isn't exactly the precise forum in one sense to mention this, but I feel it is strongly relevant since you all are clamoring to figure out what the hell is wrong. I am NOT using Google Documents, however with this FF browser (3.53) my 'paste' functionality does NOT work either. For example, I see a name of a person in an article; I highlight and 'copy' it. I go to 'paste' it in Google's search window and the 'paste' function is greyed out as if I had not just copied anything. HOWEVER, if I go directly to notepad, I can indeed 'paste' the name just fine. So, for what it is worth I am also having the EXACT same trouble with the 'PASTE' function ONLY just using the browser itself, which I believe clearly speaks to a broader issue than what is in this specific 'Google Documents' thread.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||LatheOfHeaven||4/18/10 12:37 AM|
Oh, sorry, I also meant to mention also that if I do a 'restart' of FF, then immediately afterward the 'paste' function does work. Clearing the cache does not do anything...
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||cssa||4/18/10 3:44 AM|
Having the same problem. Some solutions I found:
1. In Chrome 4.1.249.xxx I used Shift+Ctrl+v to paste, and this worked even when nothing else would.
2. in IE 7 I was able to use the copy paste function after I ran IE 7 as Admin (left click on icon on desktop and "Run as administrator") then granting IE access to copy-paste in the confirmation dialog that was portrayed.
Please confirm if this works for anyone else.

|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||miletos||5/9/10 10:30 PM|
So, why is this thread so stale? The paste problem still exists at least when using Google docs in Firefox on WindowsXP.
I only need basic functionality when using google Docs, but pasting text is essential. I cannot use google docs on-line unless I can paste into documents. This is a rudimentary, fundamental capability and I am amazed that this problem persists.
So what is going on? What is the current status of this bug?
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||LatheOfHeaven||5/9/10 10:52 PM|
Just to follow up...
'Paste' function still not working ANYWHERE in Google FF browser; again, this is NOT with Google Documents. This is absolutely NO 'Paste' functionality in FF period.
Control 'V' is the only option.
Isn't this being discussed / addressed in a more general thread here than just in this Google Documents section...??? After all, this lack of functionality is clearly a larger issue and has absolutely NOTHING to do specifically with Google Documents whatsoever...

I am trying desperately to drop IE like a brick but because my business requires me to constantly cut and paste from Office applications into email (Gmail in my case) I have to stick with it because excel tables lose all the formatting once copied into gmail using either Firefox or Chrome. This is with Rich Text enabled. It just looks terrible and so for the moment I'm just going to upgrade to IE8.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||libraryguy||6/7/10 4:04 PM|
Since I began working with my Google doc on May 14, I had been able to easily copy from Word documents and then paste into my Excel-like Google doc by simply right-clicking once and left-clicking once, which is my preference. Then, suddenly, on June 5, I began having major problems with it: After copying, I right-clicked in a Google doc cell, and then left-clicked to paste, but nothing happened. So I tried double-left clicking to set the insertion point, which enabled me to paste, but what was pasted was not in the same format as data in preceding cells of the same column! And in other columns, when I attempted to paste, what was entered was not the data that I just copied, but the data I'd copied before that! Also, while I had, since May 14, been able to simultaneously copy from a Word document two horizontally adjacent monetary amounts and then select two horizontally adjacent cells in my Google doc and paste the amounts into these at once, after June 5, I never knew what I was going to get when I attempted this. Sometimes, I got the amounts, but without dollar signs. Other times, the decimal point and two digits following it were left off. Occasionally, I got data not in just the two cells into which I was trying to paste, but in the two immediately below them, as well! And intermittently, the data pasted bore little resemblance whatsoever to that which was copied (or to anything else that was copied before it).
After reading this Google Doc Help Forum today (June 7), I tried clearing my cache and cookies, and I am now able to copy and paste, albeit the latter by double-left clicking to set the insertion point first, or by resorting to Ctrl-v. Either of these options is better than it was, but I certainly wish someone would tell me how I could get back what I had for more than three weeks: 1 right-click + 1 left click = paste.
Finally, I would be remiss if I did not also list problems that I had copying from Word documents and pasting into my Excel-like Google doc on the first day (May 14) I worked at this, although those problems [apparently] self-rectified that same day:
1. No cell would accept the placement of an insertion point, despite my repeatedly double-left-
clicking in it.
2. When I attempted to select an individual cell, its entire column would be selected.
3. When I tried to paste a single-digit numeric quantity (i.e., “1”) into a single cell, that numeral
was instead pasted into every cell in the column. When I then attempted to delete the
superfluous numerals in the usual way (by selecting them all and pressing the “Delete” key), I
could only do so in blocks, rather than all at once.
4. Whether I copied-and-pasted or typed a longer (10-digit) numeric quantity into its cell, it would
be accepted at first, but when I would then try to select a different cell, the numeric quantity that
I had just entered would turn into an “@” symbol and would not be changed back (not
even when I tried format copying/pasting).
5. The entire screen would intermittently freeze, necessitating my repeatedly logging out and
then logging back in.

Johnny, I get an e-newsletter every week that I had been in the habit of copying from my e-mail and pasting into a Google Doc so that I could highlight the key points. Now I can't paste it (it says "nothing to copy"). I have tried saving the e-mail as a .pdf to my computer, then uploading & converting to a Google Doc, but then I lose the graphics (which are economic charts very critical to understanding the content). The basic "copy" from e-mail and "paste" to Google Docs used to work like a charm. I hope the functionality can be restored! Please let me know.
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||libraryguy||8/9/10 1:09 PM|
Johnny Cache, now when I copy the data in a line from my Google Doc and paste it into a different, blank line in the same Google Doc, nothing happens unless I sign out and then sign back in, whereupon the pasted data has appeared in the intended location. Very time-consuming and frustrating...
|Re: Copy/paste functionality not working||libraryguy||8/11/10 4:56 PM|
Johnny Cache, yesterday and today some new problems have reared their ugly heads: If I copy from a source and then paste into my Google Doc, the data appears, but when I then place the insertion point in the pasted data and type (even just one character), or backspace, or delete, the insertion point automatically moves to the end of the data in that cell (every single time). Also, if I begin typing data into a blank cell, the Google Doc not only ventures to guess (based on previously-entered data) what it is I'm going to type, it inserts its suggestion, unbidden, into the middle of what I've typed! (We haven't heard from you in almost four months. Is any progress being made in correcting the plethora of problems with Google Docs?)

On two different computers now, one Mac and one PC, both using Firefox, when I right click anywhere in a Google doc the only option I get is "Link..." No menu or anything. It's the weirdest thing.
To copy/paste, I have go to edit/copy, then edit/paste and sometimes that doesn't even work. Sure make the use of docs not usable for me anymore. I don't want to have to go back to Word or Text. Help!

Shift+Insert works on Chrome 6.0472, even when clearing the cache or re-loading the doc fails. This bug has been around for a long time and caused me a lot of frustration. Google's inability to provide basic support for Docs is really worrying.
