This is a common function in excel: Insert a cell (or multiple cells), then have content in that column or row move down or to the right.

When would this be added to Google spreadsheets?

<<When would this be added to Google spreadsheets?>> Your guess is as good as mine!

Strangely this is not something that has bee requested all that often.

This is one missing feature I pickup up on the first spreadsheet I tested with.

They really need to add this.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed lgmb_0t1 4/6/09 8:33 AM
I agree that this is a necessary (and likely easy-to-add?) feature.  I'm using Google Spreadsheets for some very simple timeline-management and it would be nice to insert a cell to shift everything back a week instead of highlighting, cutting, and pasting my existing data down by one cell.

I also strongly call for this feature to be added. I just started using docs spreadsheet a few days ago and already I can count multiple times that I wanted to insert a single cell. I think that this feature is a big hole in the product offering. I vote for quickly adding it to the feature set.

I used Google Docs to look at a spreadsheet for the first time today and within 30 seconds I discovered that this (pretty basic) feature doesn't exist. Please add it, pretty please?

(Similarly, I discovered that I can't sort a range of cells, only whole columns. Could we also have the ability to sort a range of cells?)

I spent hours working on a spreadsheet then needed to insert more data into a column. Ooooops!!!!! I can only insert rows not cells! Ouch!!!!!!!!!
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed ahab 7/12/09 3:54 PM
You can select a range of cells and drag that to a lower position, not as easy as 'inserting a cell', but just as effective.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Kelvomatic 7/29/09 4:52 PM
Please add this feature!!!  such a basic feature that I use ALL the time..   cutting and dragging is a pain.   Please add this google team
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Kelvomatic 7/29/09 5:14 PM
actually...  the ability to delete a cell and shift others up etc is also highly requested
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Angel14995 7/29/09 6:30 PM
If you go to the bars on the top or right that show the column or row, and right click, and press "Insert 1 above/below/left/right", it should do what you are asking for.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed jasonsan 7/29/09 7:19 PM
@Angel14995:  Your suggestion inserts a row or column, not a single cell.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Ben_1 8/26/09 9:23 AM
If you highlight the cells as you would in Excel, then hit insert from the menu, you will see the choices that a right click in excel would show.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Ben_1 8/26/09 9:24 AM
OOPS, my comment inserts a whole row, sorry.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed mecurb 8/29/09 9:09 AM
there are several ways as above to delete the contents of a cell but the only way I have found to eliminate the cell is by deleting the contents then cut and past the remaining cells into the new position. Awkward

I have used Spreadsheets to maintain a running check-balancing sheet for some time now.  However, after attempting to create a real budget spreadsheet, I have run into this same problem.  Without such a simple function, inserting and deleting cells without affecting entire rows, this is a very simplistic spreadsheet that is just not ready for prime time.  I really don't see how they get someone to pay even $50/year for this after seeing how rudimentary the product is.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed blackbird13 9/24/09 8:48 AM
I would really like to use the spreadsheet as it would make it so much easier to be able to access info from work or home, but without the insert cell feature, it's pretty much useless to me. :(
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed japplebyvines 9/24/09 6:47 PM
Yes please add this function!!! This is the one thing that drives me crazy about Google Spreadsheets.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed foodplay 10/7/09 8:41 AM
I just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of people asking for this. It is an incredibly basic piece of functionality and it's a bit crippling not to have it available.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed edgek 10/28/09 2:10 PM
I have been thinking about introducing Google Docs as an Office alternative in my organization. Unfortunately, with basic stuff like this missing, I really can't even begin to think about. I can live with it personally, but can't force it on a couple hundred other people until it has all the basics in place.

Add this!!!
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Ashabasha 11/23/09 1:50 PM
PLEASE ADD THIS GOOGLE TEAM!! MAJOR DRAWBACK
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed nickwb 11/24/09 12:32 AM
I was hoping to share a spreadsheet with my team, but its it's too difficult to update it without them being able to insert a cell for their input. Please add this basic function that Visicalc had 22 years ago; these omission render google apps unusable as yet.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed russclarkcpa 11/25/09 8:32 AM
You really need to add this feature to the spreadsheet, nobody works with just entire rows or columns.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Gill 11/25/09 11:57 AM
Nobody? I do - for adding records of plants and animals to my wildlife spreadsheet.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Jahdi 12/30/09 1:24 AM
Hi. Sorry I'm a tad late to the party, but I have to echo this request. I recently started using Google Docs, but the lack of single-cell management means I'm going back to the awkward Open Office. It's genuinely surprising, as Google is known (by me at least) for being incredibly user-friendly.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Sangano 4/14/10 10:40 AM
I too would like to see the ability to add/delete individual cells.  It's a huge pain in the neck right now to work as easily as I could in Excel.  It's about the only thing keeping me from becoming a full-time Docs user at this point.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed ricardofin 4/16/10 2:53 AM
Can only echo the calls for Google to add this.  My first experiment in G spreadsheets has me creating timelines, most recent first.  Adding a cell to create a new 'most recent contact' is essential.  I'm not prepared to cut/paste so I'm scuttling back, for now, to MSFT.  Shame!  If creating a new machine, that machine needs the essential key parts in order to work.  Bells and whistles can come later.  Insert cell is a key part in this machine, imho.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed jjgiannone 4/29/10 7:43 AM
Agreed - this is a very annoying obstacle.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed dvcarruth 5/19/10 2:54 AM
IMe too. Causes a lot of pain not being able to do this for some functions where I just want to sort items in a single column
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed dwbolt 5/26/10 10:43 AM
Just adding my vote to add/delete cells and have option to fill in from from left, right, top or bottom.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed Linkmeister 5/26/10 11:25 AM
Google Team, this request has been outstanding for more than a year. Where's your vaunted innovation? If Open Office can do it, and Excel can do it . . .

If I have a four-column spreadsheet and want to add items to the 3rd and 4th columns in the center of the sheet, I insert a row at the desired point, then type in my additions. But now I have two empty cells on that row in the 1st and 2nd columns, and I have no way of deleting them and shifting the cells below them up to eliminate the blank spaces.

Please?

I don't understand how such a cutting edge company like Google can leave out such a basic function. I want to convert to online files but it just wont happen untill it WORKS
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed mhrivnak 8/10/10 10:55 AM
PLEASE add this feature.  I cannot believe it is missing, and I cannot effectively use spreadsheets for my business without this feature.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed ashish_m 8/20/10 5:51 AM
Please add this feature.   It is a basic requirement for a spreadsheet.
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed jegoo 9/3/10 12:33 PM
YES.  Please add this feature!
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed bygproductions 10/11/10 5:10 PM
I too need this feature. Like a previous poster, I want to do a spreadsheet with the most recent first which requires this feature. Is it is, I'll have to do it in reverse, with oldest first. Not happy about this. Seems like a basic function, hope they do it soon
Re: Ability to Insert a Cell in Spreadsheets Needed MONALISALMB 10/16/10 1:28 PM
It seems like this has been requested quite a bit. PLEASE RECONSIDER!!!!
