I would like the ability to lock specific cells. This would be ideal for protecting cells with formulas that should remain unchanged and help guide users into inputting data in the proper cells.

Thanks!
Gregula

Hi,

I am also looking for that feature.

Thanks,
Swadeep

What I do kind of a pseudo-locking.  Is a bit of a work around but...

I set a Data Validation (Tools -> Data Validation) and setup something that will never be entered.  Something like a number between -918234 and -918234 might do you.  Be sure to remove all Help text and set "Allow cells to contain only valid data".  You can still enter a formula into the cell but no text/numbers.

TomC,
Please don't even call this 'pseudo-locking'! If the Google Docs spreadsheet team thinks this may work as a 'locking' mechanism for cells they may never implement real locking. (Also note Data Validation is incompatible with the List View feture recently introduced and with forms).
(Let's call the method using 'Data validation'  'input obfuscation' ;)

OMG,
You mean I spent 4 hours converting a spreadsheet from Excel and they haven't even implemented cell locking ?
Surely this isn't still a beta product....
I guess I was expecting too much, such an important feature when collaborating and creating foolproof spreadsheets for others to use.
....Any Ideas hen it might happen ?

This is a real requirement. Let's hope it is implemented soon.

They just implemented a feature to lock entire sheets, but not individual cells.  This would be a pretty important addition which may actually scale into a feature that prescribes cell security rules.  As in, you can dictate that only the spreadsheet owner has access to change those cells --- or --- actually dictate which shared users are allowed to change those cells.

I want to be able to lock the column headers.  When I do a sort, it moves the header to the middle.  Also, is does not allow yopu more lines.

Guys, don't complain. Its FREE!

<<I want to be able to lock the column headers.  When I do a sort, it moves the header to the middle.  Also, is does not allow yopu more lines.>>

You can: Tools-Freeze rows.
To add more rows click the little plus sign right at the bottom left of the worksheet.

This is what I do for protecting formulas:

1. Create a spreadsheet.
2. On the first sheet, Sheet1, create the style of the form you want for people to enter information. Leave this sheet unprotected
3. When you've got the form looking good, duplicate Sheet1.
4. Rename the duplicated sheet 'Summary', or something appropriate. Protect this sheet.
5. On the sheet Summary, make links to the data on Sheet 1, so mirrors Sheet1.
for example, in cell A2 on the Summary sheet, type in    =Sheet1!A2
6. Have users enter data on Sheet1
6. Have users refer to the Summary sheet for the calculations or the summary of the information.

I think that locking individual cells may go against the collaborative nature of the spreadsheet - maybe this will never become a feature...

OK, I have just figured out a *VERY* kludgy way to achieve cell protection (at least for formulas anyway)

right click the cell and choose "validation"

set the validation to be text equals and then enter your formula

if anyone then tries to change the cell, it will flag it as invalid and automatically insert the "correct" text into the cell...

Hope this helps :D obviously just being able to right click and protect cell(s) would be a better way to achieve this....

Perhaps if google were willing to make the default validation be this method (auto populate "text equals <cellcontents>", then that would at least shortcut and help this issue......

I think this is very important! I made a sheet where users can enter data and learning the price of the product they are intrested in. But I realized that they don't enter their data only in the "yellow" cells, as I warned, so they destroy all the formulas.... This "lock cell" tool,  is to necessary.
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells 10yearold 4/7/10 12:21 PM
Seems like folks have been waiting for this important feature for more than a year.

Has there been any progress?

It can't be so difficult to implement, seeing that all other spreadsheets already have cell locking!
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells erturne 4/20/10 4:52 PM
I really need this feature. I keep my budget in a Google spreadsheet. Some of the cell values are calculated, such as how much interest and principle I pay on a loan each month. I want to protect these cells to protect the formulas, which can be quite complex. For example:

=IF(AND(((Year-YEAR(MortgageStartDate))*12+MONTH(DATE(Year,Jan,1))-MONTH(MortgageStartDate)+1)>=1,((Year-YEAR(MortgageStartDate))*12+MONTH(DATE(Year,Jan,1))-MONTH(MortgageStartDate)+1)<=(MortgageDuration*12)),PPMT(MortgageInterestRate/12,(Year-YEAR(MortgageStartDate))*12+MONTH(DATE(Year,Jan,1))-MONTH(MortgageStartDate)+1,MortgageDuration*12,MortgageAmount)*-1,0)

Right now I simply change the background color of cells that I want to "protect" to gray, and then force myself to never edit the gray cells.

Please, please, PLEASE add the ability to protect individual cells!!!
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells cyberdocs 5/22/10 9:53 AM
I need cell locking too!
It's probably not simple to implement it or they'd have done it already.
The lack of official feedback is troubling though (or perhaps this is not the place to ask for features).
Well...
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells Zane-O 6/29/10 1:23 PM
Please Mr & Mrs Google... can we pleeeeease have cell protection!
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells OldRacer 7/6/10 9:18 AM
+1 for the ability to lock cells.  How else can we protect sheets against users accidentally overwriting formulas?

Evin, you are planning to have this, right?
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells Nexus Matty 8/15/10 6:26 PM
I would like to see this too!
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells pencilgal 8/16/10 3:08 PM
the ability to lock cells is a must!
please add asap google
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells Cilagani 9/16/10 4:38 AM
I need the feature very badly. I share lot of spreadsheets with other users online who are supposed to modify only one column data but many times they accidentally delete data from other columns. Let's hope it is implemented soon.
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells r43007 10/16/10 9:33 PM
are they even doing anything about this? It has been over a year since folks have been asking for this.
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells baditaflorin 10/18/10 11:05 AM
I need this too. I`musing it so that people can find the price for a online calculator for sliding systems . People should be able to edit only where i allow, or the next user that will come and try to find the price, will find out that it`s another price...

yes i would love to see this, administrator privelege to lock cells.
Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells cgprosjekt 10/21/10 10:27 AM
Also here we really need to be able to lock cells!

Re: Suggestion: Lock specific cells jnbacon 10/29/10 10:35 AM
Yes, I need this.  Also, it would be great if cells, columns, and rows could be locked for a set of users that I share it with, but not for others or myself.  I would like to be able to have some users be able to edit portions of my spreadsheets, and others to be able to edit all portions.

Ask for the moon, and you just might get it!
