|Google chrome cannot read or write to its directory||reinborja||10/14/09 9:47 AM|
Google Chrome version (type in about:version into the address bar): 22.214.171.124
Operating System: Windows Vista Basic
URLs (if applicable):
Error Message: Failed to create data directory: Google chrome cannot read or write its directory
Steps to Reproduce:
My specs: Quad Core Q8200 @2.33 ghz 2 gig Memory
I have google chrome since march, besides the odd crashes here and there, its been working fine and fast. Now everytime I activate it, it gives me that message followed by a prompt to either choose another directory or exit google chrome. Even If I choose another directory, it doesn't resolve the problem. What's more annoying is that I have a ton of bookmarks, passwords, browsing history with no way of getting them. I've already done Unistall/Install for it, but still no dice.
The problem seems to have started after my computer downloaded some updates for windows today, which includes several apps for Yahoo (toolbar, software updates, install manager, search protection). Hell I could not open Firefox, unless I run it as Administrator.

Back up your bookmarks. Uninstall Chrome(choose to clear browsing data when asked) and delete the whole Chrome folder under this folder: C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Google. Then reinstall Chrome.

I did what you've asked, but still no go. Hell I could not even install Chrome, everytime I've tried, this one pops up, error 0x8004070e.
I've tried to search for this error here, and on the net but no one seems to have it before, so it came out blank. I've run it as an administrator, it seems to have installed bec. it did the download but it did not have any confirmation at the end. So I did a check, and according to vista's uninstall/change progam on the control panel, google chrome was installed today, but the funny thing is, there's nothing written on the SIZE (vista usually states kb size) . So after that, I've tried looked it up into this directory c:\users\user\appdata\local\, and found there is no google directory (note: this is where my previous chrome resided). Unfortunately chrome was not the only thing that got screwed by the aforementioned update, it also messed up my vista search function (go figure), it always says search failed to initialize, which is mind boggling bec. the search function for my other administrator account works, not only that but my dad's, sis's too (WTF?).
I'm at my wits end here, I love your browser, but not if I can't use it. I would greatly appreciate it if you help me resolve this issue.

Now it's probably time to do a system restore or something.

Nah, I just transferred all my files to my 2nd administrator account, everything works. I'm just going to delete the other one, then make another administrator account, just in case, something get screwed again. It' a freaking good thing I love your browser, or I wouldn't put up with this sh!t(tried the new firefox, did not like it, hell it's IE slow). I did not do system recover, because I've read so many "horror accounts" of people, who did that, I think it's safe to say, that this is a much better method, though transferring your files can be a pain.
Just another question, I notice the bookmark file (c:\users\user\appdata\local\google\chrome\userdata\default\bookmarks and bookmark.bak) Is there any way I can recover this from my old chrome, or anyway for my new chrome to read it? Right now, I've opened it using wordpad, then tried to do it manually (enter url, bookmark it), which is a fricking pain since i have over 300 bookmarks.

I am having this exact problem. the userdata folder is set as read only and I cant get rid of that. Even as the system administrator it gives me an error when I try to change properties

I have had this problem three times in the last three months on two separate machines. I am a huge Chrome fan and am looking forward to the Chrome store, but this is ridiculous. I think it may be time to try the new FireFox release.
