|Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||siming.guo||11/15/08 7:54 PM|
Chrome sometimes stops responding when I try to attach files on gmail. This occurs about 50% of the time, and I have to quit chrome through windows task manager.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||amanson||12/25/08 2:15 PM|
I am having the same exact problem and can reproduce the problem on the same files over and over again. This does not happen for every file on my system though, and the size of the file does not seem to matter.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Simon D. Internets||12/29/08 9:47 AM|
Hi amanson and siming.guo,
What version of Google Chrome are you running? Go to the wrench icon and select "About Google Chrome" -- if it asks you to update, please do so.
Also, could you give an example of a file type that causes this crash consistently?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||siming.guo||12/29/08 10:10 AM|
I am using version 126.96.36.199, which it says is "up to date".
For me, there is no file type that causes this crash consistently. It seems to be totally random. Even the same file will sometimes cause it to crash, and sometimes it will attach fine. I never have this problem when using Internet Explorer, so it's probably not a problem with Gmail. The file types I upload most are .doc .xls .ppt and .mp3.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||aaii||1/1/09 3:03 AM|
I have the same problem as simingguo and amanson, using version 188.8.131.52, There is no specific file causing the crash, I use jpg, doc, xls.
Google chrome working great, all of a sudden it keeps on crashing when attaching a file. Mostly no error message, just "still working" at the top and a complete frozen page. Sometimes the "oops . . . 008" message appears. Pleeease help!
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||siming.guo||1/4/09 7:48 AM|
It seems that it's not only when uploading to Gmail. When I try to upload my resume to a job search site, I have the same problem.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||aaii||1/7/09 10:20 AM|
I'm running IE and Chrome simultaneously. Quite a mission. Is there any remedy for Gmail's (not Chrome) skipping letters and acting weird?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||brianvon||1/21/09 4:47 PM|
I have experienced the same problem. And it is not just Gmail, any attachment for upload is a possible hang opportunity not just for one pane, but for all Chrome panes on all windows. As soon as the attachment starts uploading, the window freezes as do all the other Chrome windows! Terminating the single Chrome process causes all the Chrome windows to terminate! So much for multi-processing!
Ten days have passed. Earth to Google, come in please. No signs of life from Google on acknowledging that Gmail attachments are even a problem in Chrome. How to even document a freeze or hang of Chrome? The debug stack doesn't work unless you have a crash it seems! So I cannot post a calling stack unless someone else knows how to generate a call stack after Chrome HAS COMPLETELY FROZEN! So much for the multiprocess architecture of Chrome that is supposed to keep one tab from KILLING ALL THE OTHER PANES WHEN IT FREEZES. Given that Chrome and Gmail represent a single-vendor solution, you would think that Google would prioritize this fatal issue with their browser.
Other browsers tested:
Add OK or FAIL after other browsers where you have tested this issue:
Firefox 3: Does not fail, works just fine
IE 7: Does not fail, works just fine
Chrome: freezes all tabs and all windows about 25% of the time an attachment upload is initiated.
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. go into gmail and compose an email
2. attach a file for upload
3. watch chrome freeze 25% all windows and all panes. cry as you think about recomposing your email and start considering using other browsers.
What is the expected result?
What happens instead?
all windows of chrome freeze or hang and you have to restart all of chrome.

|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||nhard01||1/27/09 11:12 PM|
Same problem as others. Chrome crashes whenever I open a Windows explorer window through it (browsing for email attachments, saving an online picture to my hard drive, etc.). The explorer window will open fine but after I try to open a folder or navigate the filesystem in any way, Chrome crashes. This problem just started a few days ago for me.
I have to switch to Firefox every time I need to save or upload something.
I'm using the up-to-date version of Chrome (184.108.40.206) in Vista.
A patch or any advice from Google would be much appreciated. Thanks.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||nhard01||1/27/09 11:18 PM|
Update to my post above: Chrome does not crash when I'm saving a picture on my hard drive using an Incognito window.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||1/28/09 7:04 PM|
I'm with all the above. It's not just Gmail. Chrome crashes sometimes when I'm downloading files from the net. So, Gmail crash is almost 100% on attach (which really sucks after you've typed a long email...) and it's about every 3rd-4th time on download. When Chrome crashes it goes away completely and I get the "oops" message. It has only really hung once. The oops message is really annoying. This fix seems simple. Previous versions did it, too. I can't believe you guys left beta with this still on the table. Please fix!

I am not able login to my i.d.?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||sofimi||2/19/09 4:36 PM|
This happens to me too BUT ALSO when I download.
It doesn't happen all the time. I clear my cache and download history. Restart Chrome, and usually it stops hanging. But then the cycle repeats and eventually when I download something it hangs again.
This has also happened for a while now, after several updates from Chrome. I really hope you can look at this absolutely weird and frustrating problem and fix it.
(Should I post this as a completely different problem? Also, I tried the "logging the error" advice on one of the help pages but I'm not getting any new logs in the specified folder.)
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||JWBR||3/12/09 6:31 AM|
I can consistently repeat the hang-up and each time the upload progress bar is about 80-90% full. Is this the same for you ?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||3/12/09 6:35 AM|
JWBR>> I can consistently repeat the hang-up and each time the upload progress bar is about 80-90% full. Is this the same for you ? <<
I'm not sure if you noticed, but now Google as implemented an "upload file" protocol that you actually see before it sends the mail. This hasn't solved my download crashing though. To answer your question, mine is less consistent. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn't. I gave up on Chrome weeks ago.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||laidlaw.david||3/12/09 7:58 AM|
I am seeing this in version 220.127.116.11, just upgraded minutes ago. This started happening for me yesterday or this morning, I believe. For me, as soon as I click on the "attach a file" button in gmail in either regular browser mode or "standalone" mode, that chrome window locks up. I can kill the process for that window, but the empty window remains locked up. The only way I've been able to continue working is to kill all chrome processes. It's possible that only one of them needs to die, but I was unable to determine which one.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||3/12/09 8:44 AM|
laidlaw.david>> It's possible that only one of them needs to die, but I was unable to determine which one.<<
David, don't trouble yourself with trying to figure this out. There is something very wrong with Chrome's ability to access windows explorer (the file system). Today, I downloaded the update, tried again, and it crashed EVERY time. Wow. I can't believe they are not on top of this. What a mess.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Shawn (Googler)||3/12/09 10:16 AM|
I understand that this may be frustrating. As previous comments note, it's most helpful to diagnose this if we have a dump file and more specific information.
- Can you guys report what version of Google Chrome or Chromium dev version you're using?
- What OS are you using?
- Can you guys generate a dump file for the hanging process? I believe it's a little easier for those of you on Vista (see Reference 1). Otherwise you can try the instructions listed in Reference 2. Try having as few tabs open in Google Chrome as possible. You can send your file to us through the below contact form (Reference 3).
Thanks for your help and more specific details.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||3/12/09 10:24 AM|
Thank you for chiming in. I missed the other Googler's reply up top.
I'm using version 18.104.22.168 on Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Version with Service Pack 3 on a Sony Vaio.
I will learn how to send the dump file, but something funny happened today.
In a renewed interest to make Chrome work, I downloaded Google Apps to see if that would help. I haven't crashed again yet. Are they related or is this just a coincidence?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||JWBR||3/13/09 2:21 AM|
OK, I've captured and reported the hang-up according to your instructions.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||shorthele||4/27/09 6:04 PM|
The same thing is happening to me on internet explorer (7) and firefox. When i upload a file to email on gmail it crashes my whole system every time. I have a MAC also and it does not have any problems there, so seems to be only a PC problem.
I am running 64BIT Vista Ultimate

Another victim, its been 3 full releases from google and still no fix for this. What's with Googles versioning anyway, 3 versions and I see no major changes to validate a version number increase anyway....
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||colindines||6/23/09 3:24 PM|
I see the same issue - it happens EVERY time Chrome opens Windows Explorer. Running the latest version, Windows XP, with or without Labs. The only (dodgy) solution I have found is to set a Download Location in Options -> Minor Tweaks, and uncheck "always ask me". It means I have to move the files to the right location using Windows Explorer later, but it's better than crashing and being completely unable to download !
I can't believe Google haven't fixed this yet - this is a pretty fundamental problem.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||techie_engineer||8/2/09 6:41 AM|
I have the same problem, But Chrome does not actually hang, it just goes into the background. And the popup window for "Attaching" files does not appear. So since it is a modal we cannot click anywhere inside Chrome.
I think this is a problem with the flash attach. Did Google fix this. Also how do i switch to normal File attach popup incase the flash causes a problem?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||colindines||8/5/09 1:48 PM|
Hello, Google ? Any news ?
Here's an easy example - I open Chrome to THIS VERY PAGE and this is the only tab open.
I right-click on the Google logo and select Save Image As.
It brings up an Explorer window which is showing my default download location, with file logo_small.gif.
I click Save. In another Explorer window I can see the file and open it, but Chrome is DEAD.
Task Manager show it not responding, and nothing will bring it back.
This crash occurs EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to save a file. It also happened when clicking a Download link, but I got around that by entering a default location and telling it not to ask me.
Will try to generate a dump file and send it to you.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||colindines||8/5/09 2:08 PM|
Generated dump files using userdump 8.1, but ironically I cannot attach them using the "report persistent browser error" page because, yep, you guessed it, Chrome crashes when I try to attach the dump file. Sigh - will do it using Firefox ....
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||colindines||8/5/09 2:26 PM|
Shawn, I can't upload these bloody dump files in the "report persistent browser error" page. Chrome hangs when I add the file (obviously), IE and Firefox both give errors when I click "submit". Can I send you the files ?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||8/5/09 3:38 PM|
I finally uninstalled Chrome today. I just couldn't take it anymore. I absolutely love that browser, but with as much uploading and downloading as I do, I couldn't take the crashes slowing up my day. And with the dump file enabled, it would cause my computer to hand for up to 10 minutes while it "dumped."
I wish them luck, but maybe they should focus on the search business. The new Firefox smokes them.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||sujeet2555||8/25/09 2:14 AM|
mine is chrome 22.214.171.124 and upto date.nothing works when uploading any file on any sites.
isn't there a session feature in chrome so that i can save the opened tabs for browsing later as as chrome crashes and i loses all the opened tabs.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||colindines||8/25/09 3:21 AM|
re: sujeet2555 - mate, it sounds like you're getting pretty desperate there too. You shouldn't have to save the tabs, because it shouldn't crash. It CERTAINLY shouldn't crash ALL the tabs as they are (apparently) supposed to run entirely independently.
I've given up on Chrome now too - this problem is such a fundamental one that it makes Chrome utterly useless if you get this problem. I'd rather wait 5 or 6 seconds for Firefox to start up once when I log in. after that Firefox runs just fine, doesn't crash, etc etc.
Thanks for nothing google.

|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||WillowRaven||9/2/09 3:31 PM|
I have been using Google Chrome for about 2 months now and for the most part it is fine, however ..... every time I answer an email where I am embedding an image (even something small, like a smiley), Google Chrome does the "uh oh, Google Chrome has Crashed" and asks if I want to restart, and then when it re-opens, if I want to restore (which I say "yes" to both so I can go back to what I am doing). I use my Gmail for a lot of email groups, including some that are graphics-related, so being able to embed images is important, especially for those groups. Please help as it is getting WAY beyond annoying. This happens several times a day and yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it did NOT help at all - it still crashes. The crashes have been happening for about the last 4-5 weeks. For the most part, attaching a file is not a problem.... it is only when I *embed* an image, does Chrome consistently crash.
- Google Chrome version: 126.96.36.199
- Error message (if any) "Uh Oh! Google Chrome Has Crashed!"
- Operating System Windows XP
- Antivirus/antimalware software AVG
- URL that you experience the crash on (if applicable) www.gmail.com
- Exact steps to reproduce: any time I try to embed an image in an email on any account, not just Gmail
- Crash dump file: (sorry, not sure where to find this......)
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Please also note that this issue does NOT occur when I access Gmail (and other email accounts) with Firefox or IE. However, I like Google Chrome and would like to know why it is doing this, and what can be done to get it to STOP doing this.

I've had the very same problem. Googled a lot and found nothing.
I blame new Flash 10 player for this situation, because when you remove it
(In my case there is an uninstaller in: c:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\ ), the problem disappears.
Of course, you are not able to run flash in your browser from that moment...

Its not just with gmail, its with any Flash plugin which tries to launch a "file dialog" , its been a long time and google is yet to solve this problem. Most sites are moving to flash file open rather than normal file open due to many reasons and many sites will stop working in chrome incase this issue is not fixed.

I am running XP SP3 and running 4.0.266.0 and have seen this issue for a while. One thing I notice is that this might be related to when my computer goes to sleep or hibernates, I notice this issue more. When it happens, I can't get it to work until I reboot the computer. All open widows and tabs are affected and lock up (I thought chrome was not supposed to do this) and rebooting is the only way to allow uploads after that.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||bradbarrish||1/6/10 8:18 PM|
I have been seeing this problem forever. I use the nightly Chromium builds under Mac OS 10.6.2. I am currently using Chromium 4.0.292.0 (35661) and the problem is as bad as it's ever been. I don't actually see a crash as much as I am not able to select files to attach, say, in an email composition window in Gmail. My cursor flickers and doesn't seem to respond to mouse clicks properly.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||joelsapp||1/7/10 2:21 PM|
This is correct, It doesn't crash. It locks up. I send a dump log to google. But it sounds like it is something that is in the code for sure.
I have two work arounds on Windows XP atleast:
- reboot. This will cure the problem temporarily.
- find google in the task manager and right click the lowest PID for chrome and select End Process Tree. This seems to reset the issue as well.
I also know this is happening for me after my computer sleeps.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||1/7/10 3:16 PM|
>>> I have two work arounds on Windows XP atleast:With all due respect, who wants to go through all that? I sent dump files to google nearly every day for at least 2 months and it's like they just ignored it. My friend swears by chrome on XP, but never used Gmail. He just switched to Gmail and called me the other day. Crash. It is just ridiculous that basic file operation issues can't be fixed. What really disappoints me is that they keep pushing forward and don't address this problem.
I have Windows 7 now, but I'm not planning on using Chrome (as much as I like it) until somebody can reassure me that this thing is stable. Especially with Gmail.

I'm running the latest version of Chrome on Ubuntu Koala, and I'm having a very similar problem: it offers the unresponsive page dialog when I try to upload a very large file. Worse, if I opt to kill the page and close out of Chrome, it hoses my profile, and then I have to rm -rf the profile.

|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||jozecuervo||2/10/10 4:00 PM|
After hours of trial and error I found an amazingly innovative solution. Close chrome, delete it, wait six months and then re-install. Works every time.
MBP/OSX (up to date),
All attachment file types and sizes. Straight busted...
Sorry, I know you guys are working hard to rid the world of another browser that has more than a few issues, but this is killing my workflow. I'll reinstall chrome one day, probably.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||2/10/10 6:54 PM|
Sorry, Joze. The wait 6 months doesn't work, either. Tried that. And here's an update.
Everyone I know who has tried Chrome loves it. And everyone I know who tries it also uninstalls it because it just simply will not work with Gmail. We've all sent dump files until we were sick. The scary part is that they're actually building an operating system built on it.
I'll keep Windows 7 and my Gmail via Firefox. Thanks.

|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||bheidkamp||2/14/10 9:21 AM|
I've been having the same issue that many people in this thread have been having -- I just realized my problem had nothing to do with Chrome and was pretty much user error.
The window that Chrome would open -- and I thought wasn't opening and was just freezing Chrome -- was opening "off screen" -- in my case on a second monitor I thought I had detached but hadn't. I know, in some cases, windows -- even in a one monitor setup -- can open "off screen" as well -- one of Windows quirks.
I'm wondering if this could be the cause of some of the problems.
Don't hate me if that's not the answer for you :)
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||2/14/10 10:00 AM|
No hate! LOL But here's another update... just got another tech help call from a friend who doesn't even know I/We had this problem. This is the message he left on my cell just yesterday: "Hey, wondering if you ever tried that Chrome browser from Google. I'm trying it, but it keeps crashing. Is this an XP thing?" His exact words.
I sent him the link to this thread.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||alabanco||2/16/10 12:08 AM|
That happens because you select Advanced attachment features.
as a temporary solution - Go to Settings > General > Attachments and choose Basic attachment features
Smth wrong with Flash.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Pirate727||2/16/10 6:28 AM|
With respect, what is the difference between advanced attachment features and basic, and why would that matter?
It is my opinion, and the opinion of everyone in this thread (and the 10s of 1000s with the same issue that aren't on this thread) that Google should have a browser that doesn't crash every time you try to upload or download something in their flagship Gmail. I use Gmail too much to have to deal with the headache, and then spend weeks putting dump files together for their diagnostic team that results in no improvements.
The browser is unstable, it was when it launched, and it still is today. After 3 trips around the block with it on 3 different machines and two different operating systems (including the new Windows 7), the case is closed. It's a mess. A beautiful mess, to be sure, but a mess just the same.
Frustrated in Florida

|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||JWBR||2/25/10 4:03 AM|
I use Chrome on different computers at work and at home. At work uploads to Gmail consistently fail. At home uploads consistently succeed. Is there a firewall/authentication issue?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||colindines||2/25/10 5:10 AM|
Exactly the opposite problem for me ! Works fine at work, does not work at all at home.
Also, everyone seems to be focusing on Gmail on this thread - I've had the same problem downloading files from other web pages - my Chrome crashes/freezes EVERY time it opens an explorer window for either download or upload - are you other users getting this problem ?
Google : WTF ? Hello ?
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Damzini||3/9/10 10:47 PM|
I use it in multiple applications, never in gmail, and more than 50% of the time it crashes. Google - get on and sort this out. I really hate having to go back to Firefox, and my team won't put up critical failure with this when I just about will.
|Re: Chrome crashes when I try to attach files on gmail.||Shawn (Googler)||3/11/10 5:49 PM|
I can definitely see that this is frustrating and we are committed to getting at the root of these issues. Over time, it seems this conversation has evolved since the original posting. We've got reports of the attachment file option disappearing in Gmail, not being able to select files to attach in Gmail, uploading files in other sites besides Gmail causes crashes among other things. These issues should be caused by differing factors and I'd like to try to separate them out in order to derive the most appropriate solution for each issue.
I've created separate threads for each of these issue descriptions below and hope that you guys contribute to the conversation that is most applicable to you. I'll be retiring this thread in favor of more distinct, current conversations.
Thanks always for giving your feedback.
